Sorry the blogging has been a bit on the lean side lately but pretty much all the free time has been occupied playing bass in the bands I’m in. My friend Chris Nickey and I played over 50 shows throughout this past year year with our band Chris And Tommy’s Good Time Folk Rock Show and now we’re closing out 2011 in a big way with our first show at Philadelphia’s renowned Tin Angel.
Come on out and help us celebrate on Friday December 30th. Grab a nice dinner downstairs at Serrano restaurant then pop upstairs and enjoy a great night of music.

Starting the new year off with some gratuitous self promotion and trying to kick start this blog back into gear. The Philadelphia Film and Music Festival livens up the city this coming weekend. For those of you not familiar with it I’ll let the press release do the talking:

THE PHILADELPHIA FILM AND MUSIC FESTIVAL or “PHILLY F/M” for short) is a four-day festival taking place at over 30 music and film venues, with free outdoor stages, day parties and a record fair. Philly F/M will take place on Thursday, Sept 23 – Sunday, Sept 26th, 2010 and will feature a wide variety of regional, national and international musicians and films. The festival strives to be an annual event that effectively merges independent film and music in new and exciting ways. Instead of segregating them to different venues, the festival will combine the aural and the visual in dynamic settings to engage and foster new audiences for both mediums. Philly F/M will combine screenings with live performances, present a live, improvised film scoring series, screen music shorts and documentaries, curate a local music video expo to tie in the city’s rich musical landscape and screen outdoor films in unique settings. Philly F/M is headquartered at 2424 Studios (2424 E. York Street) in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood. In addition to serving as the Philly F/M headquarters, the “Skybox” will host a record fair and exhibitor area during the festival. This two-day (Saturday/Sunday) event is free and features record vendors and a variety of exhibitors showcasing their music and film related products.

To help you weed through the music choices for the next few days, I’ve scoured through the extensive schedule and made a list of some of the must see bands. Hope to see you around at a few of the shows, I’ll be out and about to as many as I can.

Some brand new music to kick off what looks like is going to be a beautiful Fourth Of July holiday weekend here.
When I first heard Justin Kline back in fall of 2008 with his jangly debut with the Six Songs EP, I pegged him as an artist to watch and anxiously awaited his first full length. Sadly, just as he was wrapping up nearly a year’s work and putting the finishing touches on the new record, thieves broke in to the Nashville studio where he was recording and stole much of the recording equipment, including the only copy of the masters from his new record. Disheartened but undeterred, Justin has decided to release a second EP entitled Triangle which includes versions of a couple songs that were being worked on for the new record, and couple outtakes From his Six Songs EP, to listen to while he begins anew on re-recording his full length. Check out the the glorious sunshiney pop of Alison, We Cannot Be Friends and head on over to his website to hear some more from the the new EP as well as some older songs.

Due to the day job becoming a black hole that sucks in all my free time the past couple months, the posting here has been rather sparse, my apologies to all of the loyal followers out there. In the meantime the music has still been happening fast and furious and if can manage to squeeze a couple of free hours out of each day hopefully I can get the posting can get back on track here.  With that being said I promised a lot of cool people that I chatted with at this show that I would get it online for you all to enjoy. It’s a fantastic set from a couple weeks ago at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia by the legendary Feelies, a setlist filled with classics, a sprinkling of new songs, and chock full of the covers they famously put their spin on.  I think it may have even surpassed the brilliant set I saw them play at Johnny Brendas just about a year ago (you can still listen to that set here).
