The Island of Great Exuma is not what you might be expecting. Sandals Emerald Bay is basically the only resort of its kind on the entire island, if your looking for action or a swinging singles scene, this really isn't the place for you. If your thinking deserted, natural ocean beaches with a little bit of a romantic yet rustic vibe (off the resort) this is your place.
The Emerald Bay resort dominates the island and sits in a stunning location not far from the airport. Although I'm not a golfer , the course looks absolutely breathtaking and will most likely be the first thing you notice prior to landing in Georgetown. I can't imagine a more beautiful golf course this close to south Florida.
As far as I'm concerned the beaches and crystal clear water are the main attraction (depending on the weather) snorkeling and beach combing off of the resort would be on my "to do list" in Exuma.

I highly recommend fishing around Chub Cay for bones and the Tongue of the Ocean for the the big stuff! If you have your own aircraft- I'd try Chub Cay as they have some beautiful rental properties situated extremely close to the marina. Once your on Chub look up Joe Lewis, he knows the waters around Chub like no one else.. and tell him Danny sent you!

People fly to India, stay in a hut for a month. They sail across the Pacific. They camp for weeks in the remotest stretches of northern Maine or build yurts in western Montana or walk the Alaskan bush with binoculars and field guide. They go to Australia. They suffer the hardship of distant travel against the serenity they hope to find when they get where they’re going, and they work hard to earn the money or time that allows them to do it. Run into someone just back from a long sojourn to the outback, tanned and rested and suddenly kind, and odds are he’s either wealthy or Buddhist, a college kid, dreamer or life dropout, sometimes all five.
It does not have to be this way. Not if you follow the bonefish, not if you come to Lovely Bay, to this long, desolate sandbar at the southeastern end of the Bahamian archipelago to walk the flats of Acklins Bight with fly rod, concentration and hope. Not if you’re game and have a few days. You won’t need more than that.
The travel is easy enough. Flight time from New York City, not counting a pleasant overnight layover in Nassau, the commonwealth’s capital, is five hours total. Five hours away and you can spend three days, dawn until dusk, on the water, the horizon as wide and lonely as the moon, seeing precisely this: No other people. No houses. No boats. No planes.
There is only the water, a soft pale grassy green flecked with white that gives way to teal in the channels, and to straw-ruffled browns on the flats, the oily green rise of mangrove hummocks behind them. There are clouds scudding through the immense blue sky, scattered terns wandering the waters with muted cries. There are manta rays pulsing along in the deep, and turtles breaststroking on hidden currents, menacing lemon sharks and motionless barracuda and shrimp and crabs and lobster and conch. There are jacks, and needlefish, and grouper. And there are bonefish: silvery ghosts feeding hard on the tide in the shallows, their dusky tails breaking the surface at the far edge of your eyesight.
“STOPSTOPSTOP,” hisses Fidel Johnson, 34, his hand held up to halt me as I wade beside him in silence. Mr. Johnson is a fishing guide here, and has the laconic intensity of all who do that job well. He is barefoot in shorts and a fishing shirt, standing on the wide flat that backs up to a path near his home in Lovely Bay, mirrored sunglasses over his eyes doing nothing to hide the force of his gaze. Acklins Island is a shallow question mark that sits at the very bottom of the Bahamian chain, 100 miles northeast of Cuba, 390 southeast of the States; it has a landmass of roughly 90 square miles, with only 450 residents, none of whom are anywhere in sight. Mr. Johnson was born on Acklins. He has fished its waters, he said, since he was 12.
He is pointing now, still whispering, his torso bent down over the water, keeping his profile low. “Eleven o’clock, 50 feet, nownownow.” I strip line from my reel, begin to cast and haul, cast and haul, put a fly out on the clock at the distance, start to retrieve the line.
Catching a bonefish is a difficult business. The fly that entices this skittish fellow — feather and rubber made up like a tiny crab, with a sharp hook within it — is tied to a long, thin, nearly invisible tippet, which in turn is tied to a slightly thicker leader, and this to the fly line itself, a heavy, floating line that shoots through the air to take the bait to the target. You cast this line hoping to land it near the fish, so that the fly will be in the animal’s range of vision, but not so close that the line itself spooks him away. Once the fly is within range, you strip the line back through your fingers in short little bursts, a few inches at a time, making the crab twitch and stumble on the seabed.
It takes practice and you aren’t from here, so it is best to listen hard to the guide. “Stop,” he says. Then: “Strip, stop, strip, strip, he’s eating it, strip, strip.”
And whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, a bonefish is on the hook and tearing away into the distance, ounce for ounce the fastest gamefish you’ll find on the flats, more than 20 miles per hour in the initial burst, the line ripping off the spool of the reel with a satisfying whine that may intrude on your dreams for months to come. This is a fat, four-pound bone, complete explanation for why anyone would devote his life to the pursuit of this species.
But enough of this dirty talk, this pornographic reverie. Chasing bonefish is an activity that in its way is as addictive as golf, or mainlining narcotics. Suffice it to say: There are plenty of fish in the Bahamas and it would be terrific to catch them all. It is wise to speak little of that, however, save with other fishermen. You might just as easily come here to look at birds, or simply to stare at the emptiness and contemplate nirvana.
Let us start instead at the beginning, in Nassau, far away from these flats, on the cusp of travel. Two of the great meals available in the Bahamas can be discovered there, as different from each other as could ever be imagined by a tourist board, restaurant critic or hungry traveler, and each as capable of shifting a person’s worldview as a miracle.
The first may be found at the Graycliff, an elegant old pile of a colonial home, built in the 1740s on a hill above the harbor in what was once downtown Nassau, across from the governor’s mansion. It is a hotel now, among the city’s most formal, with stately parlors and dining rooms on the first floor, all polished wood and overstuffed sofas and white-jacketed waiters offering rum.
