Well, Boy Genius Report has gotten ahold of some photos that appear to be the Kindle 2, so we're curious what Amazon has to say now.

From the looks of the new device, Amazon has tried to address some of the criticisms of the Kindle, most of which revolve around its somewhat homely design and a few poorly placed buttons. The shape has been modified to make the new Kindle more attractive, but it appears Amazon is sticking with the same off-white color scheme--for better or worse..more

Setback for Nokia music service

Nokia faces a setback at the global launch of its music service in the UK this month because the country’s big four mobile operators do not plan to sell it.

Vodafone, O2 , Orange and T-Mobile are not expecting to use their high street stores to offer Nokia’s handsets featuring its unlimited music download service in the run-up to Christmas.

That would be a setback for Nokia, the biggest mobile handset maker, which is beginning an ambitious strategy of putting services such as music on to phones. It also underlines tensions between Nokia and the operators.

Nokia’s Comes With Music service had a global launch party in London on Thursday.

Two Nokia handsets featuring the service, which offers consumers the ability to download as much music as they want over a 12 or 18 month subscription period, go on sale on October 16 in the UK.

However, Nokia’s long-awaited 5800 mobile, its first touchscreen smartphone, is not one of the two launch models for the service because it will not go on sale in the UK until next year.

The UK is the only market where the Comes With Music service will be available this year. It will expand into continental Europe, Asia and the US next year.

In the short term, Nokia is likely to have to rely on Carphone Warehouse, the mobile phone retailer, to be the UK distribution channel for its Comes With Music-enabled handsets. Nokia will also use its London shop and website.

The two Nokia handsets featuring the service that go on sale in the UK with Carphone this month are the 5310 and the N95.

Priced at £130 ($229), the 5310 will be available on pay-as-you-go deals, and Carphone is the exclusive UK distribution channel for the handset this year.

The N95 will be tied to monthly contracts with the operators, although Nokia said Carphone had not yet provided pricing details.

The cost of the contracts will be partly determined by Carphone’s commercial arrangements with the operators for subsidising handsets. Many mobiles tied to monthly contracts are given free to consumers.

It remains unclear how many operators will agree to provide network coverage for the Comes With Music-enabled 5310 and N95 from October 16.

Nokia said: “We are optimistic we will have several operators on board by the end of the year.”

The operators all declined to comment.

Nintendo shows off new DSi with camera, app store

Nintendo hosted its latest press conference in Tokyo last night, and with the gaming giant not displaying its goods at this year's Tokyo Game Show, the press was expecting some big announcements from the event, and no one was disappointed. New hardware, new games, and new services were all announced and detailed, but the biggest news has to be the revamped Nintendo DS, called the DSi.

The shell of the DSi

While not being positioned as a "sequel" to the DS—this is more of a sister product—the DSi has some welcome new features, in addition to being slightly lighter and thinner. The studios have argued that it threatens their emerging business of digital downloads and can motivate buyers to rent, copy and return DVDs instead of buying them.

RealNetworks, the company behind RealPlayer software and the Rhapsody music subscription service, said RealDVD gives users the freedom to do things like make backup copies of favorite discs or take movies along on a laptop while traveling. It has argued that RealDVD is now legal because of a favorable decision last year in a case against Kaleidescape, a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of high-end media servers.

RealNetworks also said that RealDVD conforms to Hollywood’s rules on DVD protection by encrypting the digital copies, which prevents unlawful online file sharing...more

[BAK2u] SoftGen to distribute device tracking software

The distributor gains access to the full range of Bak2u device products to track phones and other mobility devices

Device tracking software supplier, Antitheft.net.au, has signed on SoftGen as its sole Australian distributor.

Under the new arrangement, SoftGen will have access to the full range of tracking software products for iPods, desktop PCs and Macs, notebooks, mobile phones and PDAs.

The Bak2u tracking offerings notify users of the location of their mobile device and who is using it if it is lost or stolen. The mobile phone product does this via text message alerts to another chosen phone number and can be used to wipe information remotely. The GadgetTrak device tracker, meanwhile, is sold on a subscription model and accessed by users over the Internet via GadgetTrak’s servers. Both products will be sold locally under the Bak2u brand.

Antitheft.net.au director, Jason Rogers, said it had been looking to expand sales of the tracking products in Australia across retail, reseller and online channels. Antitheft.net.au has been around for three years and is the agent for Bak2u and GadgetTrak across A/NZ and South East Asia. With rising mobile device use, he claimed there was an increased need for extra security measures. “We started getting interest from the retail outlets and decided to look for a partner. SoftGen fitted with where we are going and gives us access to the proper channels,” Rogers said.

With a broadening range of products, Rogers said SoftGen would now be its primary route to Australia’s consumer and corporate markets. The company will, however, also look at product bundling opportunities with OEMs.

SoftGen general manager, Guy Coles, said the Bak2u offerings fit well with its push into mobility and security markets. The distributor is in discussions with telco operators and dealers to on-sell the Bak2u mobile phone tracking software with handsets.

Coles said SoftGen planned to push the device tracking software for storage devices, PCs and Macs, through its traditional IT reseller channel.

He said the tracking software could be something resellers provided as a value-add service.

“When your phone or BlackBerry is stolen, it is the information stored on the SIM or device that is of most value,” Coles said. “These tracking products would suit corporates with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements who have reporting obligations."

Source: http://www.arnnet.com.au

Hands on: Nero's LiquidTV, TiVo for your PC

Nero today announced LiquidTV, a combination software and hardware product that brings the entire TiVo experience out of the living room and onto Windows PCs. Offered as a mix of TiVo software and a handful of unique features, LiquidTV brings a handful of integration and even video-exporting features to a home theater setup or on-the-road TV enthusiast. LiquidTV won't be available until October 15, but Ars Technica spoke with Nero and took a demo unit for a spin to see how well TiVo's PC liberation went.

The basics

LiquidTV is a two-part product: the TiVo PC software that runs the show and a WinTV-HVR-950Q TV tuner card from Hauppauge. This package sells for $199—which includes a one-year TiVo subscription—but you can also purchase the TiVo software by itself for $99 if you own a compatible TV tuner card. Along with the included tuner card, Nero provides a branded TiVo remote, IR transceiver, portable digital TV antenna, and an RCA input cable for the card....more

[BAK2u] iPhone Applications Freeware (Sneak Preview)

Pending approval

Others: iPhoneBAK: Mobile Security Software

*Design of applications subject to changes

Forum
Complains.sg

How does CELL ID and AREA CODE works in your PhoneBAK Anti-theft software?

PhoneBAK - Cell ID and Area Code:

http://www.celltomap.com

What is CellToMap?
CellToMap uses cell phone tower information to show a given cell phone network location on a physical map. I was so depressed even I got a receipt with taxi license plate. Then I knew I lost it forever as it's off after 10 minutes while I kept calling my own phone...

I did not know anything like who got my mobile, and what happened on all the valuable info I had in my phone!

After getting the substitute one (LG KS20), I still worried about losing this one again. Luckily, I noticed there was software called "PhoneBAK" from a magazine. I was impressed on how this software can do, esp. hard resetting the mobile after sending SMS to assigned parties.

Recently, I bought a new HTC Touch Pro and I need to get a new copy of PhoneBAK. BAK2u get PhoneBAK even more perfect - including "Erase memory card" feature. I love this feature, as I always put some business materials in the card for pushing emails. Then I have no worries to lose any business sensitive info again. Of course I don't want to lose my mobile again, but PhoneBAK gives me a solid insurance :)

In summary, PhoneBAK is not only security software, but it's extremely user-friendly, and BAK2u is such a considerate company with lots of user-care features like locking the software and not showing it in the "Add/Remove Program" screen!

Looking forward to more excellent software from BAK2u,

Clive, Hong Kong

Why iPhone developers should defect to Android

Quite a bit has been made lately over Apple's treatment of developers who want to create apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The company has consistently played games with developers by keeping them in the dark and ensuring that each time an app is rejected they're given as little information as possible.

Of course, this doesn't come as a surprise to those of us who have followed Apple all these years. The company has always been suspect of third-party developers and has consistently failed to do the right thing even when it's faced with a PR firestorm. After all, if the mainstream doesn't pay attention, who cares?

But it's that kind of mentality that could get Apple into trouble. Sure, it worked fine for the company with Mac OS X and it has every right in the world to stop apps from getting into its store if they're undesirable, but that doesn't stop the onslaught of complaints that Apple is acting in a way that's more than a little "wrong."

Let's see if I can capture the main points. First, Apple announced that the first iPhone wouldn't have third-party apps. It took almost a year for the company to come around and finally let third-party developers create apps for its follow-up. But once that happened, all hell broke loose.

First, developers repeatedly made claims that Apple's excessive restrictions were out-of-hand, only to be followed once the App Store launched with a few notable removals from the store, including Nullriver's NetShare and Box Office...more

BAK2u server crashed.

BAK2u.com server has crashed and is being rebooted...opps.

Updated (1.16am): Up :)

Press Release: MOBILE SECURITY SOFTWARE THAT PROTECTS BLACKBERRY DEVICE & COMPANIES

Companies risk losing competitive edge through stolen BlackBerry devices.

Employees are risking themselves and their employers when they lost their BlackBerry to theft with loads of sensitive information in it that gives free access to bank account numbers, credit cards, project details, videos, photos, text messages and even emails to the public or competitors!

PhoneBAK BB (WipeOut) is the latest mobile security software from BAK2u Pte Ltd that wipes out all information and reports back the identity and location of the thief!
PhoneBAK BB (WipeOut) helps owner track down the thief through alert SMS text, email, IMEI*, IMSI* and even thief's contact number when the device is stolen. But before the search engine giant can threaten Microsoft's enterprise supremacy, most observers of wireless industry efforts agree that the company's open source OS platform will need to regain support from its development community.
With the first Android-based phone -- the HTC Dream -- rumored to be joining the crowded smartphone market later this year, whether or not enterprise users will take notice remains to be seen. But according to Rob Enderle, principal analyst at The Enderle Group, big business is exactly the target Google hopes to attract.

"The Android platform is part of Google's strategy to eventually move against Microsoft in the enterprise," Enderle said. "Google is coming in with the phone because it's not a platform that Microsoft currently controls and no vendor has reached a monopoly in the mobile space yet."

Enderle said the smartphone is trending to be the next laptop computer and an integral part of enterprise communication. "Just like Microsoft rode the change from the mainframe to the PC into the enterprise, Google will look to do the same with the smartphone," he added.

But other mobile industry watchers, like Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney, disagreed with Enderle's theory that the Mountain View, Calif.-based tech giant has its sights focused on large organizations..more

Apple recalls iPhone 3G power adapter

Apple is recalling USB power adapters that shipped as part of the iPhone 3G package in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, and numerous Latin American countries. Apple customers who purchased the phone can exchange the adapter via web order or simply by visiting Apple stores beginning October 10.

Apple today indicated a design flaw in its “ultracompact” USB power adapters supplied with the iPhone 3G or as a standalone accessory, which can cause the prongs to break off and remain in the power outlet, creating the risk of electric shock. The company said that it has received reports of “detached” prongs but no injuries.

The affected power adapters were exclusively sold in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Panama. The company recommends customers in these countries to stop using their adapters “immediately” until they exchange them for a new, redesigned adapter. In the meantime, the company suggests users to charge their iPhone 3G through the USB cable that connects to a PC, by using a standard-sized Apple USB Power Adapter (with fold up prongs) or by using a third party adapter designed to work with the iPhone, such as a car charger.

Apple said that replacement adapters will be available beginning on October 10. Customers who received their adapter as part of the iPhone 3G or through a separate accessory purchase can get their replacement adapters through Apple retail stores or through web order. According to Apple, adapters ordered via Internet wills hip within three weeks of the order, starting on October 10.

Replacement USB power adapters are marked with a green dot at the bottom.

Apple decided to bypass the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission with this recall and did not provide any information how many products are affected. However, with a confirmed shipment of more than 1 million iPhones 3Gs during the device’s launch weekend of June 9, as well as Q3 (July-September) shipment estimates of 4 to 8 million, units it is safe to assume that Apple will have to replace several million USB power adapters in the 14 countries the unit was sold.

Source: http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/39406/135/

Coming soon: PhoneBAK Updated version

In a few more days we will release a new version of PhoneBAK anti-theft software that does more than just retrieving/locating/alerting others about the stolen phone ...

We don't need you to pay more nor get tied to a subscription or annual fee in protecting your phone.

Nor do we believe in replicating things that you can do it cheap and free by charging you a fee and telling you it is for your own good when you can just back it up to your computer yourself.

We just don't.

Watch this space.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The Google phone, which features a touchscreen and is made by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, faces some stiff competition. The iPhone 3G has generated significant interest among consumers for redefining touch-screen technology, popularizing mobile applications and significantly improving Web navigation on cell phones.

T-Mobile (DT), the first carrier that will run Google’s Android mobile software, will show off the new phone to analysts and reporters on Tuesday in Manhattan. It is expected to hit stores later this fall.

Representatives from Google, HTC and T-Mobile would not comment on the Journal’s report.

Google unveiled features of the Android operating system on an unidentified black HTC handset at a developers conference in London on Wednesday.

The HTC phone is just the first of many Google-powered phones, according to the search giant. For Google to reach its ultimate goal - driving mobile Internet use and, in turn, ads - it will need to get multiple devices in the hands of mainstream consumers. The price will also need to be right, given that companies like Palm and Samsung already offer entry-level smartphones for $100.

Source: Cnn.com

[BAK2u] How to install - PhoneBAK Mobilephone

Video guide to installing PhoneBAK Mobilephone

Stolen laptop - Personal details of former directors

A laptop computer containing personal details of 385 former directors of insolvent companies has been stolen, the Insolvency Service has said.

It has written to those it believes may have been affected by the theft of equipment from its Manchester offices.

One of four laptops stolen from the government agency contained information on the directors from 122 firms.

This loss is the latest in a long line of cases where confidential information has been lost or stolen.

Greater Manchester Police are investigating the burglary, which happened on 28 August.

Those affected by the theft include former company directors, insolvency practitioners and people who were named in documents, including creditors, complainants, investors and employees.

The Insolvency Service said 385 ex-company directors had been affected and also about 150 people with a connection to the firms.

Information on the company directors included name, address, date of birth and occupation.
