The 16th annual Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Doré Nash. The walk is free, but be prepared to pay for the subway and lunch. Doré tells us that there are mugs of light and/or dark ale served two at a time, along with corned beef on rye or a cheddar cheese platter with raw onions and crackers.

The ACD Society's Doylean Awards and Wessex Cup

Awards for Doylean excellence in four categories: fiction and poetry, performing and visual arts, scholarly writing, and service. They will be presented in The Mysterious Bookshop. The 29th BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture

The 2026 Lecture will feature award-winning composer, singer-songwriter, dramatist and author, Rupert Holmes. He is widely known in the world of music for his hit single, “Escape” (also known as “The Pina Colada Song.”), and for the score of the Broadway show, The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

A prolific author, Holmes has written several dozen plays and screen plays, as well as television series and a New York Times best-selling novel, Murder Your Employer. He was the first person in theatrical history to win Tony Awards as author, composer and lyricist; and he is also the recipient of two Edgar Awards.

The Literary Agents — Sixth Annual Meeting

The Literary Agents is a scion society of the Baker Street Irregulars (BSI) dedicated to studying Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s works — not exclusively (but also not excluding) those he may have promoted for, or under the name of, Dr John H. Watson. The meeting is hosted by Ashley D. Polasek BSI (Author of Being Sherlock and Editor of The Conan Doyle Review) and Mark Jones BSI (Co-host of the Doings of Doyle podcast).

10:30 - 11:30 a.m. The Literary Agents explore Sherlock Holmes adaptations, in conversation with leading screenwriters and creatives. Watch live online.

Cost: Free, but registration is required.

Open House — Mysterious Bookshop

Free and open to all BSI and Sherlockians. A gathering to be with other Sherlockians, browse the shelves, buy books. On this day, we welcome collectors and readers to our lower level to browse the shelves for some scarcer titles. We customarily have authors who will be happy to sign their books. Light refreshments.

The William Gillette Memorial Luncheon

A luncheon of Sherlockian conviviality, including skits and the announcement of that year's recipient of the Susan Rice Mentorship Award. The Gillette Players will perform a sketch by Lee Shackleford.

Noon: Connolly’s Pub & Restaurant, 121 W. 45th Street (between 6th & 7th Avenues — map) open to all Sherlockians.

A special viewing of Sherlock Holmes in 221 Objects, items from the collection of Glen S. Miranker. The Grolier Club will feature this special exhibition from January 12 – April 16, 2022.

The 25th BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture

This year's speaker will be Mary Bendel-Simso. Dr. Bendel-Simso is a professor of English at McDaniel College, and is an expert in the history of detective and mystery fiction. She and previous Distinguished Speaker, Leroy Lad Panek, are co-editors of The Westminster Detective Library and have also co-edited Essential Elements of the Detective Story 1820-1891, and Early American Detective Stories: An Anthology. In addition to mystery and detective fiction, Professor Bendel-Simso’s research interests include African-American literature and literature by women authors. Her talk begins promptly at 6:15 p.m.

For all Sherlockians attending the BSI Weekend, arrangements have been made for a block of rooms at the Westin Grand Central Hotel, 212 East 42nd Street, NY, NY 10017 (map) with special BSI tax-free rates (subject to deadlines).

The hotel is a full-service non-smoking facility. Breakfast is available at the hotel but is not included in the room rates; you will need to arrange for incidentals charged to your room to be paid at check-out.

Please note that if you choose to book directly with the Westin Grand Central Hotel or elsewhere, you will not receive the BSI tax-free group rates and you will be paying New York City and State taxes amounting to approximately 20% of your total hotel bill.

To secure BSI room rates, and save the 20% tax, the BSI is accepting reservations for lodging and BSI activities via the BSI Weekend Registration Form (PDF) – see the form for deadlines.

The 23rd BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture

This year's speaker will be Dr. Theodora Goss, World Fantasy and Locus Award-winning author of the short story and poetry collections In the Forest of Forgetting (2006), Songs for Ophelia (2004), and Snow White Learns Witchcraft (2019). Her Athena Club novels (The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter and European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman) feature the female monsters that are often voiceless in those texts, such as Catherine Moreau (the puma woman from Dr. Moreau’s island, Beatrice Rappaccini, and Justine Frankenstein. She teams them up with Mary Jekyll and Diana Hyde, as well as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, to solve a series of gruesome murders in the streets of London. The detective and his chronicler had to appear in her novel, not only because a murder mystery at that time would surely have been known to Mr. Holmes, but also because she noticed, while writing about The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, that the events of Stevenson’s novel take place near Regent’s Park, directly across from Baker Street. Surely Mr. Holmes would have been aware of the doings of Mr. Hyde, particularly the murder of Sir Danvers Carew. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson also feature in the second and third books of the series, where we find out more about other Conan Doyle characters such as Irene Adler, Mycroft Holmes, and the intrepid Baker Street Irregulars.

The 22nd BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture

This year's Distinguished Speaker is Ken Ludwig, two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright whose work is performed throughout the world in more than 30 countries in over 20 languages. He’s written 26 plays and musicals, with six Broadway productions and seven in London’s West End. His three delightful Sherlockian plays (originally starring)—The Game’s Afoot (Donald Sage Mackay), Postmortem (Patrick Horgan) and Baskerville—are perennial favorites among Sherlockians.

The 21st BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture

This year's Distinguished Speaker is Martin Edwards, who chairs England’s Crime Writers’ Association (CWA). He has authored over 60 short stories; edited 35 anthologies; and published 10 non-fiction books, including a study of crime scene investigation techniques and real-life cases. His publications include The New Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes, a collection of Sherlockian short stories. Martin has been honored with Edgar, Agatha, Macavity, and Poirot awards in the US; plus the Margery Allingham prize and Keating award in the UK. He is past president of the world-famous Detection Club.

The 20th BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture

This year's Distinguished Speaker is Sara Paretsky Through her protagonist, V.I. Warshawski, she has contributed to the reshaping of the mystery genre with her female private eye. Ms. Paretsky holds the Triple Crown of crime fiction writing, having earned three lifetime achievement honors: the Edgar Award for Grand Master from the Mystery Writers of America (2011); the Anthony Award at Bouchercon (2011); and the Cartier Diamond Dagger Award from the Crime Writers’ Association (2002). She’s received additional awards for individual titles.

Arrangements have also been made for a second block of rooms at The Roosevelt Hotel at 45 E. 45th Street, NY, NY 10017 (a block from The Yale Club, map), also with special BSI tax-free rates, see the Reservations Form below.

Both venues are full-service facilities; breakfast is available at each but not included in the room rates; you will need to arrange for incidentals charged to your room to be paid at check-out.

Please note that if you choose to book directly with either BSI venue, or elsewhere, you will not receive the special BSI tax-free rates and you will be paying New York City and State taxes amounting to 20% of your total hotel bill. To secure BSI room rates, and save the 20% tax, the BSI is accepting reservations for lodging and other BSI functions from Sherlockians who are not attending the BSI Dinner and who are not BSI Members, as described in the form below.

The BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture

This year's Distinguished Speaker is C. Alan Bradley, the New York Times best-selling author of Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. He is also a lifelong Sherlockian who wrote Ms. Holmes of Baker Street: the Truth about Sherlock Holmes, as well as a charming story about an older Holmes and Watson in A Study in Sherlock.
