NEWS RELEASE
Oct. 9, 2009
Contact: Steve Rottinghaus, director of public relations, 785-594-8330 or steve.rottinghaus@bakeru.edu

Electrifying Baldwin City documentary to premiere

Baldwin City, Kan. — The documentary “Bauer, Baker and Baldwin City: Electrifying a Small Town’s Identity” will premiere at 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, at The Lodge, 502 Ames St.

A grant from the Kansas Humanities Council supported the project as part of its Kansans Tell Their Stories Program. The Lodge and the Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce will serve as host of the screening.

The eight-minute documentary captures the story of Professor W.C. Bauer, Baker and Baldwin City being forever linked in 1906 when the young academic electrified the university and then the entire town.

“The documentary focuses on the impact an innovative chemistry and physics professor had on the Baldwin City community at the turn of the century,” said Joanne Tolkoff, project director and the director of marketing and communications at Baker. “Professor Bauer provided a service, encouraging the community to be independent and not to cave in to the corporate power utilities at work at that time.”

A research paper by a Baker University student last year inspired the documentary. Tracy Light, a senior history and secondary education major, conducted all of the primary-source research associated with the story.

“Her paper allowed us to realize there was a good story, something that had some depth and a story worth telling,” Tolkoff said. “We were one of the first communities in the area to install an electric grid system to bring electricity into the city limits. It was so unusual that we became a model for other towns.”

A panel discussion, led by John Richards, assistant professor at Baker, will follow the documentary. He will be joined by Light; Loren Litteer, former Baldwin City mayor; Julie Mulvihill, executive director of the Kansas Humanities Council; Brad Roszell, of Hometown Collaborations; and Susan Emel, professor of communication at Baker.

“The collaborative effort with Baldwin City residents in the production of the project has resulted in an informative and enlightening documentary,” Tolkoff said.

NEWS RELEASE
Oct. 6, 2009
Contact: Steve Rottinghaus, director of public relations, 785-594-8330 or steve.rottinghaus@bakeru.edu

MBA student receives prestigious scholarship

Baldwin City, Kan. — Kay Thomas, a student in Baker University’s Master of Business Administration program at the Lee’s Summit, Mo., campus, has received a scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The scholarship provides up to $50,000 annually for up to six years to students pursuing graduate or professional degrees.

Thomas is one of only 49 graduate students to be awarded a scholarship this year from the foundation. Recipients of the scholarship are selected based on their academic achievement, critical thinking ability, unmet financial needs, will to succeed and breadth of interests and activities.

“The foundation has provided more than a scholarship, but also a rich experience as they bring scholars together every July and August for a scholars weekend in the Washington D.C. area,” Thomas said. “This has helped me to connect with other students, providing motivation for school, a desire to learn, and a desire to do my part to make the world a better place in which to live.”

A registered nurse at DaVita Dialysis Clinic in North Kansas City, Mo., Thomas is pursuing an MBA to be in a position to provide improved quality health care with a cost effective strategy. She hopes to work in corporate settings to provide education for employees to work toward fitness goals in a holistic model, caring for the physical, emotional, environmental, spiritual, social, and psychological needs of people.

University fall enrollment announced

NEWS RELEASE

Sept. 22, 2009
Contact: Steve Rottinghaus, Baker University director of public relations, (785) 594-8330, steve.rottinghaus@bakeru.edu

University enrollment at 3,853 students; more than 300 new students on Baldwin City campus

Baldwin City, Kan. — As of Sept. 22, Baker University’s overall enrollment for the fall 2009 semester is 3,853 students, according to figures released today from all four of its schools — College of Arts and Sciences, School of Professional and Graduate Studies, School of Nursing and School of Education.

The Baldwin City campus, which serves College of Arts and Sciences students and School of Education undergraduates, reported an enrollment of 992 students, six fewer than reported last fall. The enrollment figure includes non-degree seeking students. The on-campus population totals 929 students. Of that number, there are 308 new degree-seeking students — 257 freshmen and 51 transfers. That represents the highest total of new students at Baker since that number was first tracked in 1986.

“We are encouraged by the continued confidence families and their students have shown in our excellent undergraduate programs at the College of Arts and Sciences,” President Pat Long said. “Our new students have energized the Baldwin City campus through their participation in the classroom and university activities.”

Operating at maximum capacity, the School of Nursing at Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka has 162 students enrolled.

The School of Professional and Graduate Studies and the School of Education graduate programs, which serve working adults at locations in Kansas and Missouri, have ongoing enrollment throughout the year. Current enrollment at the School of Professional and Graduate Studies is 1,789 students, consisting of 934 undergraduates and 855 graduate students. Baker’s School of Education graduate programs currently have 910 students.

At this time in 2008, Baker’s official fall enrollment was a record-high 4,112.

“After decades of steady increase and a year after setting a record enrollment for Baker University, we were aware of the potential for decline in our adult student population this fall because of challenges to our national economy,” Long said. “The adjustments to our budget over the past year were in anticipation of the economic concerns faced by working adults and their families. Our faculty and staff at all four of our schools remain steadfast in their recruiting and retention efforts.”

Baker has campuses in Baldwin City, Overland Park, Topeka, Wichita, North Kansas City, Mo., and Lee’s Summit, Mo.
