Wasco's Medley pinned in title match at state championships

It didn't even last long enough to be considered a nightmare, but Saturday night's 220-pound state wrestling final was very different from what Wasco High senior Sean Medley had envisioned.

Bloomington junior Derrick Jones pinned Medley in 47 seconds with two brutally effective moves, ending Medley's senior season at 46-2 and his dream of being a state wrestling champion.

Take Frontier senior Augie Alcantar, who only started wrestling as a freshman and didn't become anything close to a state qualifier until this season. Alcantar entered this weekend's state meet at Rabobank Arena ranked No. 24 at 220 pounds by The California Wrestler.

Drillers' Hammond turns up heat in state wrestling quarterfinal

Coleman Hammond's 152-pound quarterfinal match at Friday's CIF State Wrestling meet was a microcosm of his day. It started kind of slow and then started methodically gaining momentum until ending with a crescendo.

After a couple of solid, but not overwhelming, wins to begin the tournament, Hammond punched his ticket to the semifinals with a virtuoso performance, pinning Tyler Rardon of Livermore at 4:59 of their quarterfinal bout.

For Sean Medley, the state's No. 1 high school wrestler at 220 pounds, doing anything that involves looking backwards doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

So when he received a scare Friday, nearly getting pinned in the round of 16 at the CIF State Wrestling Championships at Rabobank Arena, he shook it off, got up and started to dominate.
