Baptism Cake for Sweet Madeline

2015-01-25T13:29:00.000-08:00

When an old friend contacted you to make her a baptism cake for her daughter you obliged. Little sweet Madeline is the daughter of one of my oldest friend from high school, and it made you realize how we're getting older when you and your friends start having children and all that comes with it: baby shower, baptism, first birthday party etc.

The design is pretty simple, she asked me to copy a picture of a cake with small flowers forming a cross, I put my own twist by making the cross standing up and add some roses. The bow at the back basically to fill in the space but I think it add some nice touches.

I think this is my first ombre strips cake, so excited to finally do ombre cake. Got to tell you making those strips are pretty time consuming but love the result at the end.

Here's a view form top angle of the cake. Thanks Madeline's mum for trusting me to cater for sweet Maddie baptism.

Cars 2 Cake for Lucas

2014-10-06T05:14:00.000-07:00

If you ever remember last year I made a cake for my beloved nephew for his first birthday Cars cake for Marco and how I miserably failed to make the cake topper. That time I tried to make a giant Lightning McQueen and the details are just overwhelming so I decided to go with plastic version of that red car.

So this project is about redemption and how I was faced with my nemesis those talking cars from Disney's Cars franchise. Lucas's mum contacted me and asked me to do a copy of another caker's work with 2 cars figurine on top. Still recovering from the failure I made, I braved myself to accept the challenge. Since it required 2 figurines on the cake so it's not too hard to do and I managed to do the cars figurine (yay me).

Along with the figurines I did the cities plaque as per Luca's mum photo example, and I did Cars 2 logo as well. With a little bit patient and aiming on achievable goal I managed to pull trough this cake.

I also did some stars to burst out from the cake with Italian flag colors. At the end it was quite a well presented cake and I was quite happy with the end result.

I also did racing flag pattern on the cake board, shouldn't have done the whole thing as most of my hard work was covered by the cake.

Here are some of the pictures of the cake.

I hope you enjoy this entry as this is my first entry on 2014 (gasp!) been lazy as this is October and I have at least a dozen project to blog.

Here goes my new year resolution, maybe I need to renew it for 2015 :)

Ruffle Rose Cake

2013-12-30T01:44:00.001-08:00

This cake is for my mum, I've been doing cakes for 2 years and this is the first time I got a chance to do a cake for her. She happened to visit Australia for my little brother's graduation from Uni. She loves shoes and handbags and first thing came to mind is to do a cake related to shoes and handbags. But after second thought I decided to make something feminine and elegant for her.

This ruffle rose design has been around for quite sometime and I really wanted to do this design so I decided to do it for my mum. It's not as simple as it looks and I did found difficulties at times but at the end I managed to pull something quite decent. It is time consuming and took a lot of effort to do.

For the topper I decided to do my favorite peony, this time in white and open wide as the center of attention. For the top tier I used my new airbrush set (a Christmas gift from my wife) to give it pearly sheen. The pearls was last minute addition as I thought the tier looked too bare without anything.

It was 4 faced ruffle roses all around the cake, took me approximately 3 hours to finish this small tier. The bottom tier was 6 inch and top tier was 5 inch yet it took me forever to finish the ruffle.

My beautiful mum with her birthday cake, I had so much fun doing this cake and her reaction was priceless.

This is my last entry for 2013, it's been a wonderful year. I had amazing opportunities to learn and try new techniques and the highlight of this year cake-wise was being featured in Cake Central magazine.

I want to say thank you to all my supporters with your positive comments on Facebook and word-of-mouth recommendations. I'm a hobby baker that hopes to turn this cake decorating as a sound business venture. Hopefully year 2014 will be my year to realize the dream, thanks again and have a safe holiday and Happy New Year 2014.

Adam's Baptism Cake

2013-12-30T00:55:00.002-08:00

Angela and Simon was a long time supporter of BakerzDad, Simon's Panda birthday cake was one of the cake that I did and I also did their Puzzle Wedding Cake. They have been blessed with beautiful baby boy, Adam and Angela contacted me to do Adam's baptism cake.

Angela asked me to do me-to-you teddy bear, the original picture the teddy was holding rosary, I tried to make rosary but it didn't turn out well so I did cross instead.

She also asked me to do baby booties but I pitched in the idea to make it converse sneakers instead and she agreed.

Along with the cake she also asked me to do cupcakes as favors for the guests to take home. The cupcakes come with individual boxes.

Details on the cake

Angela sent me this image of how the arrange it in the Church. Welcome to the Kingdom of God little Adam may you raised become a faithful man and fear of God.

Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with my next project. My next project will be my last for 2013.

Rustic Wedding Cake

2013-12-29T23:56:00.002-08:00

One of our bridesmaid was getting married and she asked me to do her wedding cake. I've been quite close to Indira the bride because she's really easy to be around with, always positive and open minded. When she asked me to do her wedding cake unlike other bride she left everything up to me I mean everything.

Her only brief was the wedding going to be in a vineyard and it has sort of like rustic feeling to it and her color was green. First came to my mind was sugar succulent which is quite popular lately, it's still uncommon and quirky and fit to the rustic theme.

This is my first time did sugar succulent and I love how easy and great it turned out to be. The branches idea came to me when I visited Cake Expo in Melbourne, I saw one of the cake has succulent and branches on it. The challenge is to find what branches to use. At first, I was thinking to use dried curly willow so I went to the florist and informed that they don't sell dried willow only fresh willow and it will get dry if taken out of water for a couple of weeks, yeah right I only have like 4 days until the wedding.

So I took the change and bought the fresh curly willow and took it out of the water. At the end it worked out better because the fresh branches are easier to handle.

I accompanied the cake with a dozen of cupcakes decorated with sugar succulents. It's not your usual wedding cake so I was quite nervous if Indira doesn't like it but when I showed her the pictures I took when I saw her outside the church she approved it phew.

Me the baker hehehehe

Look how beautiful the venue was

Cutting the cake, seriously that vintage table was very wobbly I was scared that the cake toppled to the ground

The traditional sharing the cake (or cupcakes)

It was a very fun day and we enjoyed beautiful weather at the wedding, happy wedding Indira and Mike may you love each other for the rest of your life.

Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with more projects.

Peonies Wedding Cake

2013-12-29T21:38:00.003-08:00

Okay, when the bride first contacted me she failed to mention this is a wedding cake. Well practically this is not a wedding cake, this is a surprise birthday cake for the groom (so sweet) but it serves as wedding cake too. Ok I'll stop, before I confuse you even further.

Peony is my all time favorite flower in fact it's my wedding flower I think I like it because the fact that peony is huge and looks so dominant. So when the bride asked me to do peonies I jumped with joy, reason being I have peony cutter which I bought last year and I haven't got a chance to use it.

OK, back again this is a birthday cake for the groom with his Initial on top. I didn't even know that it was the bride who ordered the cake I thought she was ordering as part of a group of friends who wants to surprise the groom on his wedding/birthday.

How did I know the one ordering the cake was the bride? When I delivered the cake her name was on the venue announcement (D'ohhh) I secretly thought that she's a best friend who secretly had a crush on the groom (talking about 'My Best Friend's Wedding).

The designed was from the bride, she asked me to do a square cake as the bottom tier and placed stages of groom's life on each side of the cake, here goes:

When he was a baby

When he was a boy

When he graduated from Uni ( I forgot to paint the frame gold on this one when I took the photo, but I did paint it gold after the photo shoot done)

When he marries his dream girl.

I think this cake is so sweet and I bet the groom was so touched with how far his bride went to get a surprise cake for him. Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with my next projects.

Isadora's First Birthday Cake

2013-12-29T13:41:00.002-08:00

Isadora's mum contacted me to do a cake for her first birthday. She wanted me to do similar cake with the one I did for Ella but different (?) hahahahaha. After we discuss the idea she wanted me to do Isadora figurine on top of her cake.

She sent me a picture of Isadora with her birthday dress, a beautiful white dress and she asked me to make the figurine hold Isadora's favorite plush toy a cute bunny and she will be holding a baloon with number '1' on it.

because it's sort of bunny theme she asked me to do carrots to go around the top tier. Along with the cake Isadora's mum asked me to do some cupcakes too.

It turned out that Isadora's dad is a photographer and has his own studio Vivera and he sent me these pictures from the party. It looked like very fun party, and look at the details.

Such a fun cake to make and making me so happy that the display it on a beautiful dessert table. Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with more projects.

Fat Bunny Cake

2013-12-28T12:37:00.000-08:00

I was contacted by a friend all the way from Indonesia to do a cake for her niece, I found it so sweet. The theme was bunny, a fat one. She sent the picture of the invite and it has this picture of a very cute and fat bunny. So I drew my inspiration from there and add number '1' as requested as it was Madeleine's first birthday.

I'm quite happy on how the cake turned out. Thanks for checking my blog...

Romantic Wedding Cake

2013-12-27T13:28:00.000-08:00

I've been stalking Rob Ben Israel lately, looking at his YouTube videos, his website, NYC girls' blog and fascinated by his creations. So when a couple asked me to do their wedding cake and the asked for suggestion I pitched this idea inspired by Ron Ben Israel style.

The cake is 4 tier cake with dummy tier served as flower arrangement holder. I've been taking flower making classes in Craftsy and learned how to make sugar flowers from Jacquelin Buttler. I used technique she tought on her sugar flowers class to do the filler flowers.

Flowers I used on this cake dominantly are roses with small filler flowers and hydrangeas. As requested by the bride, roses colors were soft pink, ivory, and hot pink with green from leaves and hydrangeas as accent.

Making the cake is not a challenge, the challenge was time. I'm still working full time as sales reps and it required me to travel interstate. The week this cake was due I was out of town the whole week back on Friday and cake needs to be delivered on Sunday. So I had to do the flowers ahead of time, I made all the flowers a week before, otherwise hey won't set and unusable.

The other challenge was to make the couple's initial with romantic type, I didn't have the patient to hand cut them so I think think and think. At last I came out with the idea to hand drawn (or written) them directly on the plaque. It turned our pretty good and I love the technique.

Other challenge was transporting this cake, I think this one is the heaviest and tallest by far. Since the second bottom tier was dummy cake, this cake is sort of top heavy so carrying it took extra caution. This cake was so tall I can see the top of the bouquet when I looked at my rear view mirror in my SUV.

Thank God the venue had a food trolley which I can borrow to transport the cake. I think this cake turned out well and the bride send me a message thanking me for making the cake. I was grateful I got the change to do this beautiful cake inspired by Ron Ben Israel and hoping that got to do more cakes like this in the future.

Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with my next project.

Peter Rabbit Cake

2013-12-27T03:54:00.000-08:00

A friend of mine contacted me to do a cake for her niece's first birthday. The theme was Peter Rabbit and I jumped with joy, Peter Rabbit is such popular cake theme yet nobody ever asked me to do any cake with this theme.

Upon negotiating design etc, Chloe's mum work colleague made her the cake topper. I found it really sweet and she's done a great job. She made the peter rabbit figurine completed with vegetable patch etc.

If you look closely on the picture you will see that Peter Rabbit is sitting on a circle, that's the part supplied by Chloe's mum. I made the white picket fences around the supplied topper.

Since the topper was supplied I completed with this Mr. Frog I-dont-kow-what-his-name-is and this lovely Miss Duck I-also-don't-know-her-name.

This project is really fun to make, and I quite like the way everything just works with the supplied topper.

Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with my next project.

Dinosaur Party for Alana

2013-12-27T03:13:00.000-08:00

My Baby was turning 3 and to repeat the success of Red Ridding Hood party I planned the party ahead against my wife's dismay. She always opted to have private celebration. But in bakerzdad's world na ah....my little girl is getting the greatest party ever (in my own term of course).

After a little convincing and the fact that little Alana was starting to sing 'Happy Birthday' by her own at the end my beautiful wife obliged to have a party for Alana.

For the theme we decided to go with Dinosaur as Alana in the stage where she's 'Roarrrring' all the time and she loved the dinosaur play set we got her for Christmas. At first we were thinking something more girly but it's just not her.

For the cake I made 3 dinosaurs to symbolized Alana turning 3 and everything looks nice in a set of 3. 1 dinosaur is sitting on the birthday cake and 2 accompanied sitting on small dummy cakes.

I designed the invites and backdrop to reflect dinosaur theme and I chose to go with yellow and green with a hint of pink to retaliate with girly dinosaur theme.

For the dessert table I made macaroons, pudding, cakepops and chocolate bars accompanied with apple juices and sugar cookies.

I found a pack of foam dinosaur cut-out in KMart and decided to use it on the cookies a quick and lazy fix for the cookies.

Noodle boxes serving as take away containers for dessert table. it looks beautiful, but since I serve lunch for my guests it took some encouraging for them to take same lollies home.

I had my mum made dinosaur rag dolls for the little guests to take home, this is definitely labor of love as she's coming to Melbourne from Indonesia for a holiday and she's been on this project for 2 months. Love how everyone appreciate her effort and these dinosaurs were adopted by the little guests and the they get to name them.

Proud Opa and Oma who made the dinosaur rag dolls and bring it all the way from Indonesia.

When I said I want to have the greatest party for Alana I mean it as I prepared some entertainment for the little guests. I made dinosaur eggs with mixture of coffee, sands, flour and baking soda. I placed plastic dinosaurs inside the egg for the little ones to hatch. I got the eggs scattered around the playgorund and have them on scavenge mission to find the eggs.

And inside the eggs are small plastic toys for them to keep.

The finale of the party is PINATA, never done this one before but it seems like a great idea. I found many people on the internet suggested to do trap door pinata which is easier and not introducing too much violent to the little ones. But I couldn't find one in dinosaur shape, so I have to go with traditional bashing the pinata until it's cut open.

After a few turn of the little ones bashing the pinata without success I took matter in my own hand and bashed the pinata to dead. I literally wreck the broom stick I used to bash the pinata, that to show how resilient the pinata was.

Thanks for visiting my blog, I will update you with my next project.

Cars Cake for Marco

2013-12-27T02:08:00.000-08:00

This is my beloved nephew first birthday cake. My brother is a huge fan of F1 racing and I think he's trying to get little Marco into racing too.

They choosed Cars 2 from Disney's animation as the birthday theme. It put me to a new challenge as I never done Cars before and it's proven to be quite a challenge as I miserably failed.

I tried to do the figurines with fondant and half way I decided that it was too hard for me (sigh). So I admit defeat and flew to K-Mart 6 in the morning to get the actual toys for the cake. This is probably the first time I failed doing a figurine and with time pressing I decided to do the shortcut (very disappointed with myself).

Recovering from the defeat I managed to do some cupcake toppers with cars-inspired topper. I think it turned out quite decent.

At the end at least the cake looks great and my SIL didn't really mind with the real toys. Little Marco get to play with it at the end.

The cake and cupcakes

My borther and SIL prepared a beautiful dessert table for little Marco and I think they've done a great job.

Thanks for visiting my blog, I will update you with my next project.

Ella First Birthday Cake

2013-12-11T04:18:00.001-08:00

Ella's mum contacted me to do Ella's first birthday cake. She sent me an image with precious moment figurine on top and asked me to recreate the same cake. The only thing is to make the figurine more like Ella (Asian looking, she's Korean BTW).

Not sure about the design, I tried to pitch in a new design but she insisted to have the same design as the picture she supplied. So I tried my best to mimic the design and give it my personal touch.

Quite happy with how the cake turned out. Thanks for checking in.

Power Rangers Cake

2013-12-11T04:00:00.001-08:00

This cake is for little Evan whose turned four and he asked for Power Rangers cake. His favorite is ranger red so he took the stage with the other rangers around the cake.

I remember growing up watching Power Rangers and back down they're so plain. Now the have this Samurai Power Ranger making it another challenge to do the cake.

Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with my next project.

Hello Kitty Cake

2013-12-02T01:52:00.000-08:00

Hi everyone,

OK so I'm catching up with the cakes I've done for the last 6 months hoping that all can be done by end of the year.

This Hello Kitty cake is for beautiful Karin's 5th birthday. I did Karin's 4th birthday cake (Rapunzel Cake) and this year her mum asked me to do Hello Kitty.

Been wanting to do Hello Kitty cake for ages and now I have the chance. The challenge is to make Hello Kitty proportional because she has extremely large head compare to the body.

I just wish I did the head a tad bigger and it will be perfect. I did mini ribbon roses and scattered it around the cake.

View from the top

Karin's parents set up a beautiful dessert table with unique approach. Instead of lollies and chocolate the served 'Bika Ambon' and 'Kue Lapis Legit' (Indonesian delicacy) the adults were more thrilled by it rather than the kids.

Thanks for checking, I'm still got a lot to blog. See you at the next entry.

Cake Central Fashion Issue 2013

2013-12-02T01:27:00.001-08:00

Hi everyone,

OK OK it's been a while it's been a while, or may I say it's been too long. After 18 months diligently blogging my cakes I've been a slack for the last 6 months.

OK in case you don't know already, my cake was featured on Cake Central Magazine!!!!! I still can't believe it that I could be so lucky.

Here's the badge of honor, I'm so thrill and humbled as I thought my cake might not be good enough for and international cake magazine.

OK here's the story, back in April this year I received an email from Cake Central with this subject: 'Cake Central Magazine Interested In Featuring Your cake'. My initial thought this must be a scam, even though I'm a member in Cake Central website I'm not extremely active on the forum etc, what I did was just uploading pictures of my cake.

So I followed the link and it's seems pretty legit. They send me images below with instruction to do a cake draw inspiration from this beautiful dress.

Along with the instruction and deadline they make it clear to have plenty of pictures and suggestion to use professional. My first thought was my friend Klara from Unikblue Photography, she contacted me to do a cake for her son's birthday (Circus Cake). As I only doing cake for hobby, hiring professional photography is too expensive for an uncertainty investment (my cake may or may not be featured). So I did a deal with Klara to have a photo session done by her talented husband Steve and I do the cake in return and it went well.

So one sunny Sunday morning we had a photo shoot located in my office. We decided to use my office because the lobby got concrete wall to match the theme. The photos was fantastic but at that point I'm not sure if the cake is good enough to be featured. It's just very simple and not much technique to showcase.

I drew the inspiration from the petals and tried to mimic the dress, at point I thought it's too literal but I went with my initial impression of the dress and how I envisioned the cake.

I stayed with the true color of the dress and go with ivory. As the dress is very long and slender I decided to have a double barrel to make it look tall and slender.

The technique on making the peals is very straight forward, using rose petal cutter on gumpaste and I leave it over night to harden in shape before ensemble it.

The tricky part is how to make it flow and drop like fabric on the dress. I used royal icing to ensemble them and it took good 3 hours to ensemble the petals. It's so funny that I remember what movie was on TV while I did some cakes (not all but some). I remember 'Under the Tuscan Sun) was on while I did this cake. Very fitting with the romantic theme of the cake.

At the end I uploaded 30 photos done by Steve, and waiting for them to come back to let me know whether I made it or not and this was back in April.

Without knowing when is the actual magazine intended to be published days and weeks and months went by without and news and I let go on my dream of being featured in Cake Central Magazine. At one point I was so tempted to publish this cake on my blog as one of the instruction was not to publish it anywhere or I will loose the opportunity to be featured. At that point I was certain that I didn't make it.

Until, one day in July I received and email saying that my cake was considered to be feature and their on the final stage of making decision. Along with a notification not to publish it anywhere, lucky I haven't done it yet. So the hope was still there and I was so excited.

One morning at the end of August, I received an email to confirm that my cake was featured on Cake Central Magazine. I can here confetti and fireworks went off in my head and I can't stop smiling for the whole day.

I was so proud and humbled that my far from perfect cake was featured along other beautiful cakes. To share the lime light with talented cake artists around the world was a very great opportunity and I would like to dedicated this to my beautiful wife that always supported me in whatever I do.

Thanks for checking in my blog I hope you're not bored as I have posted photos on facebook. But I have tons of cakes to blog and I promise not to keep you wait for too long.

Red Panda Cake

2013-08-01T23:15:00.001-07:00

One day I was contacted by a lady via my facebook page asking for a cake quote.Turned out she was inquiring for her daughter's 21st birthday and she's in Sydney, so BakerzDad now delivering cake to Sydney, NOT! LOL.

Apparently, she and her entire family was coming to Melbourne for school holiday and to celebrate Christine's 21st birthday. She sent me a file full of instruction how she wanted the cake to look like. It's a square cake covered in light blue fondant etc.

She even sent me a picture of red panda from an etsy shop to copy which I obliged. This red panda figurine was suppose to be a pair for wedding cake topper. The female panda with hand bouquet and veil and the male panda in tuxedo. Due to different celebration, she asked me to make the panda holding present instead a tiffany box that is.

She also requested me to do stars on wire to go behind the panda in blue and white with light grey '21', yes she actually specified that. A name plague should go in front of the with white ribbon around and white doily to go underneath the panda.

The only thing that I deliberately decided myself id the musical notes, on her brief she put a question mark (?) next to musical notes in chocolate. So I took it that it's a suggestion only, at the end I did the musical notes in royal icing and guess what that's was her first comment when she came to pick up the cake. It's not like I don't want to do it in chocolate, but royal icing is more 'safe' and easier to wipe off in case I make a mistake which I did hehehehe.

Out of curiosity I asked her who recommended me when she pick up the cake and she said no one. She went to the internet looking for cake decorator in Melbourne and stumble upon my blog and contacted me from the details I left on this blog. I found it very fascinating.

I hope Christine had an awesome birthday and her cake was part of the awesomeness, I tried my best to do her mother's design a justice and I'm quite happy to how it turned out especially the red panda.

Thanks for checking in, I will do more process shot and tutorial so it's not too boring. But..I still got like 4-5 cakes to blog and I've been lazy lately. Ciao.

Bee Day Cake

2013-07-20T15:40:00.001-07:00

I've been super lazy lately and have lots of cake to blog, first up is this very special bee day cake. Early this year I was contacted by my friend to do a cake her son's birthday party in June, talk about super organise mum.

After discussing on what design we should go with, she sent me an image of a beautiful cake by sugar sweet cakes and treats as reference. I'm a huge fan of Sugar Sweet, as a matter a fact I did my Chanel cake following her step-by-step tutorial.

As the picture my friend sent me was a baby shower cake with pram and baby, she requested me to change it into giant bee and little boy instead as the little boy was turning three.

This cake is a delight to work with even though I must admit making the giant bumble bee is quite a challenge. I had to do second take to get the bee right, and at the end I'm quite happy with how things turned out.

The party was at this beautiful boutique party venue called 'Petit Atelier' in the middle of posh suburb, Malvern. They hosted crafting party and catered for kids as young as 3 year old, that day we did a bee paper macche using tissue paper and every kids got their art to bring home.

This super organize and talented mum has prepare a beautiful dessert table full of lovely sweets to have and to take home. They have this lovely dessert table setting that you can utilize and the spread looks absolutely amazing.

My cake took the center stage and it didn't disappoint, my friend was very happy with how it turned out and I am too. We had so much fun at the party and brought home lots of sweets. It was a well done job by the mother and I pinched list of her vendors as below.

Bee Birthday cake: Bakerz Dad
Cupcakes, macaroons, cookies: Aji bakes, and cooks too
Cookies: Dessert Menu, PleaseOreo Bee Pop Cakes Alfani Cahya,
Swizzle sticks/rock candy & Lollipops: Little Big Company.
Printables: Anders Ruff Custom Designs
Backdrop design: Ham&Pea design&paperie
Backdrop printing: Buggyboo
Pom poms: Ah - Tissue

Thanks for checking on my blog, I know it's been a while. I hope the lazy bug won't bite me again as I have a few cakes that I need to post. Cheers.

Teddy Bear Heart Cake

2013-05-18T04:57:00.000-07:00

One night I received a phone call from a couple to do their daughter's birthday cake. It was quite last minute but fortunately I'm still open for the date. It started a bit hard because they're not sure how they want the cake to look like.

So I asked what's their daughter interest, first thing that came out was Dora. Honestly I rarely see any great Dora cake around, the best I've seen so far is because the cake was done beautifully but still the Dora not looking so good. I think it's not the cakers problem but the problem is with Dora herself, she's abit hard to make in my opinion.

So I pitched the best Dora cake I can find along with other popular theme for girl birthday cake like bear, butterfly, ladybug and farm animals. And they still want Dora, but at the end the daughter picked bear theme herself (good girl). Not that I don't want to do Dora but it's so hard to get it right with her complexion and her fringe THE FRINGE!

So I did a sketch and send it to them, they agreed with my sketch and did a little adjustment. Since I only have limited time and got bitten by lazy bug I turned to Styrofoam balls for my figurine, I think I'm converted to styrofoam ball. I'm using less fondant and it's dried quicker plus light weight. I added S on the heart teddy's holding because it's the birthday girl's initial.

I'm so happy with this cake especially this is the first cake I managed to get the edge perfectly sharped. Thanks to the online course I took from Cake Masters now I'm ready to make more sharp edged cake.

The couple and birthday girl picked up the cake and they're happy with how it looks as much as I enjoyed did this cake for them. Thanks for checking, will update you with my next project.

Circus Cake

2013-05-15T05:29:00.001-07:00

This cake is a special cake, fist because circus theme is one of the theme that I've been longing to do and secondly because this is for a special 1 year old with amazing story, Kayden. For Kayden's story you can go to my dragon cookies project which I did for his one month celebration.

When I was contacted by Kayden's mum to do his first birthday cake I felt honored and squealing with delight when I learn the theme is circus and I have exactly what I want to do with the cake. During my business trip to Queensland I found some cake stands, 2 smaller cake stands and 1 regular size one. My creative mind when to possibilities using the 2 smaller cake stands to compliment the regular cake stand and this project suit just perfect.

To go with the theme I went with the obvious circus tent cake and to add a twist following the design of the invitation. Unfortunately my 2 year old successfully destroyed the beautiful invite, but anyway the invite got a lion and an elephant on the right and left side.

So I did lion and elephant sitting on top of circus platform to go on the smaller cake stands and they will go on the sides of the cake.

The party was awesome with plenty of food and beautiful decor, and the cake complemented the theme perfectly. A lot of dedication and talent poured out to the party, and my favorite thing is in the goodie bag they included a CD filled with songs that's memorable and meaningful during Kayden's first year, plenty of jazz song and it goes straight to my car audio.

I had an absolute blast doing this cake and this might be one of my favorite by far. I hope you enjoy it too, and I will leave you with my studio shot. See you in my next project, thanks for checking.

Gold and (Not) Black Cake

Hi All,

One day I had a girl contacted me to do a cake for her friend's 21st birthday party. I think it's really sweet how friend can be so thoughtful, and cake above all is one of the most important part of a birthday especially if it's a milestone.

The brief was quite simple, the birthday girl was going to wear black and gold outfit so she wanted me to do black and gold glam cake. To make sure that we're on the same page I did a sketch and she approved it.

Okay, the theme is black and gold, honestly I've never done a cake with black as primary colour. I've done black fondant in the past by mixing black food coloring with dark chocolate fondant and the trick always work like a charm. This time I had to cover 10 inch of a cake which require me to use 1.5 kg of fondant. So I did the trick kneading black food coloring to dark chocolate fondant, 1.5 bottles of black food coloring later I got something that can be pass on as really dark chocolate or if you 're in a poorly lit place you can pass it on as black. At least I tries, tried really hard. Lesson learned, it's going to be pre color black fondant from now on.

The cake design is quite simple, number 21 made out of fondant in gold color as topper, the birthday girl name on a plaque, quilted cake with gold ball accent, some roses and gold ribbon. As it turned out, despite the fact that I did 5 roses for this cake the top surface ended up quite bare. So I whisked my paint brush and did a filigree (sort of) pattern on the cake. I have to admit that I doubt my decision while I was painting the cake, but I think it really made the cake better.

Delivered the cake in the middle of Melbourne's rainy autumn night and hoping that not getting any complaint about the color. The respond from the girl and her friends lifted up my doubt, they loved it. I received this text message the next day ' Hello Bakerz Dad, just wanna say thanks for the yummy, gorgeous cake for Angelyn's 21st bday! Bday girl was really surprised & happy with it! All my friends love it too.' This kind of respond just made my day.

Thanks for checking my blog, will update you with my next project.

Giant Rose Anniversary Cake

2013-04-17T02:19:00.001-07:00

This cake is for charity that I did for my community. One of the community couple celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary and other members commissioned me to do a cake with Chinese theme.

I know this is not the best interpretation on Chinese theme but I used the colors red and gold. At first I was planning to dusk the red rose petals with gold lustre dusk. However things didn't go as plan because I experimented with new brand of fondant, red color fondant, eve though I saved a lot of time by buying ready made red fondant but this brand won't set regardless how many tylose I put in to it.

It's kinda a curse and blessing at the same time, curse because the petals keep falling off and blessing because the petals are still soft enough to manipulate when I placed them together.

At the end I wished I add double happiness cake topper on top of it as it didn't turn out Chinese enough hehehehehe. But with my red fondant refusing to set it's a bit impossible to make one out of fondant. Honestly it's been a while since I wanted to try this giant rose design, I'm quite happy with how it turned out but still think if the cake is taller than 2 tier it will be more dramatic.

Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with my next project.

Hootabelle Cake

2013-04-02T01:35:00.000-07:00

Another Hootabelle cake in a course of a week, I've became expert on making this lovely owl. I've been contacted my SIL's friend to do a cake for her daughter's first birthday. Her theme was obviously Hootabelle, this new addition on Giggle and Hoot gang sure is very famous with toddler.

The brief is simple, Hootabelle figurine with purple and pink color theme. The customer asked me to do 2 tier cake of Lapis Surabaya. I decided to do purple on the bottom tier and pink on the top tier.

I still obliged with the mandatory checkered rug on Hootabelle cake, don't know why most of the Hoot or Hootabelle cake I found on Google do the checkered rug but I just follow suit. I did number 1 with fondant with different approach this time.

I also did a different approach on the figurine, I think this one more resemble hootabelle the one I did earlier was too round I think.

I hope you enjoy my post, thanks for checking and I will update you with my next project. Cheers.

Elmo Cake

2013-03-30T15:16:00.001-07:00

My second most favorite Sesame Street character, my most favorite is Cookie Monster. I was thrill when a friend of mine asked me to do Elmo cake. She sent me the printables for the party and it looked colorful, vibrant and exciting.

She asked me to do stripes for the bottom layer and a polka dots on the top layer with Elmo burst out from the cake. I decided to do the top layer as present so it looked like Elmo burst out of a present.

I was procrastinating to the max with this cake and I had the Hoot and Hootabelle cake the day before. So I turned to me newly found best friend, styrofoam ball for Elmo's head and I really rely on support on this figurine. I had skewer supporting the head and went into the body all the way to the length of the cake. For the hand I used spaghetti to supported it and it went all the way trough the body to the cake.

Making Sesame Street character is always fun because they're so easy, no need to be perfect because they cover in fur just need to make sure the proportions are correct.

My friend prepared an amazing dessert table in this cake was sitting tall in the middle of it. I love how the color scheme went really well together and everything looked so pretty.

I can't help myself taking the opportunity to pose next to the cake, it was a great party and superb dessert table.

Thanks for checking my blog, I will update you with my net project. Ciao.

Hoot and Hootabelle Cake

2013-03-30T14:47:00.000-07:00

If you have kids in Australia, these characters are unavoidable as part of daily routine for your toddler is watching ABC for kids which Hoot and Hootabelle along with Jimmy Giggle are hosting. This is my first cake with these characters but I can feel this theme is quite popular among children and I might do this a lot in the future.

A good friend of mine asked me to do a Hoot and Hootabelle cake for her daughter's first birthday but she reminded me to use hootabelle's colur scheme rather than hoot because this is a cake for a little girl. First think I did id the figurines, since I experimented with stryrofoam in my robocake project I found that using styrofoam is time saver and help the figurine to shape better.

As for the all fondant figurine took a long long time to set and sometime I experience sagging especially on the head section, using styrofoam eliminate all the problem. For this project I used stryofoam for the bodies and heads of the figurines and it saved me quite amount of time. I guess styrofoam ball will be mynext best friend.

Along with the cake, my friend asked me to do some cookies as party favour with2 designs of Hoot and Hootabelle. These cookies took a long long time to make because all of the details, but I'm so happy with how it turned out.

My friend made a bunting for the cake and it really completed the look of the cake. I'm really happy with how everything turned out and I have to say even though we didn't communicate about the buntings it matched the color scheme perfectly.

I had so much fun doing this project even though there are moment when I'm a bit frustrated with the cookies like the stapler was out of staples in the middle of the night but all in all I really enjoy it.

Thanks for checking on my blog and I will update you with my next projects.
