Merchong Fishing 2024: Coral Trout and Food in Nenasi

Ah, the great outdoors. Short of being a dryad, those four words beautifully describe fishing in Merchong and Nenasi. Then you add some beef, lamb, tapah, soon hock, coral trout and cuttlefish, and you have the complete Merchong fishing experience.

We returned to Merchong in 2024 for another two-day fishing trip with new friends. Their target was the humble coral trout, commonly known among local anglers as ang gao.

I call it humble because coral trout are relatively common around the Merchong fishing grounds. We do not need to travel all the way to Tioman, Jubilee Reef or even Pulau Berhala to find them. Catching these tasty red groupers can be quite predictable when the conditions are right. You just need some luck and a well-presented bait.

Two Days of Fishing in Merchong and Nenasi

Did our new fishing kakis achieve their target? Yes! Every newcomer to Merchong landed a beautiful red grouper. A few larger fish also managed to bust off before they could be stopped.

The champion of the trip was Ah Bao, who somehow caught three ang gaos using a sabiki rig.

Coral Trout Fishing in Merchong

Coral trout are among the most desirable reef fish found around Merchong. They are aggressive, powerful for their size and excellent on the dining table.

Good bait presentation was important. The rig needed to remain close enough to the seabed to reach the fish without becoming permanently stuck in the reef. When an ang gao took the bait, the first few seconds were crucial because a larger fish could quickly return to cover.

We eventually lost count of how many ang gaos were caught.

Snappers and Reef Fish

Besides coral trout, the Merchong fishing grounds also produced snappers and other reef species. The action gave everyone something to look forward to whenever the rigs reached the bottom.

Not every bite became a landed fish. Some smaller nibblers stole the bait, while a few better fish found their way back into the reef. That is all part of bottom fishing in Merchong.

Fishing with Artificial Bait and Sabiki Rigs

Natural bait is usually the reliable choice for Merchong reef fishing, but artificial presentations worked too. Vinz managed to land two fish using artificial bait.

Ah Bao went one step further and caught three coral trout on sabiki. Sometimes the fish do not follow the fishing plan at all.

Releasing the Smaller Coral Trout

We intended to release the smaller ang gaos. Unfortunately, some did not survive despite our efforts. We managed to release two successfully.

When planning to release reef fish, it helps to bring them up slowly where practical, minimise handling and return them to the water quickly. Fish caught from deeper water may also require additional care because of barotrauma.

Merchong Fishing Catch Report

The first day produced the stronger catch. Everyone settled into the usual Merchong fishing routine and the newcomers achieved their coral trout target.

The second day was quieter, but we still added more fish to the overall catch. As always, the photographs tell only part of the story. A few of the better fish escaped before they could be landed.

Merchong and Nenasi Food Report

A Merchong trip is never only about fishing. Once the rods were packed away, it was time for beef, lamb, chicken wings and the usual selection of local dishes.

The evening barbecue has become part of the Merchong fishing routine. After spending the day at sea, there are few things better than sitting outdoors with the fishing kakis and cooking far too much food.

We brought Azul Argentinian beef for the barbecue. Tried and tested. Chicken wings were also prepared for the kakis who preferred something other than beef.

Nobody was going hungry on this trip, whether on the boat or back at the accommodation.

When we were not barbecuing, we ate at the local restaurants around Nenasi. The first-day and second-day meals provided more than enough fuel for the fishing sessions.

The food report may not be very scientific, but eating well is part of the Merchong fishing experience.

Final Thoughts on Merchong Fishing

There was nothing especially complicated about this trip because everyone already knew the drill. Fish hard, present the bait properly, try to stop the coral trout before they reach cover, and then eat far too much after returning to Nenasi.

Most importantly, all the newcomers achieved their goal of catching a red coral trout. We also lost a few larger fish, which gives everyone a good reason to return.

Merchong remains one of our favourite places for a simple fishing and food getaway in Pahang. The coral trout fishing is accessible, the surroundings are peaceful and the post-fishing meals are always taken very seriously.

Desaru Fishing Trip with Ah Long Desaru

Not much of a catch report this time, just a relaxing Desaru bottom fishing trip with Ah Long Fishing from Tanjong Lompat. We travelled quite far offshore in search of bottom fish. In fact, we went so far out that we even saw the Ah Jiang Sportfisher boat fishing in the same general area!

The bottom fishing was good, although we lost a few larger fish during the trip. There were plenty of smaller nibblers around, and we released the fish below approximately 800g.

The fish may not look especially large in the photographs, but most were actually nice table-sized specimens. It was a fun day of light-tackle fishing in Desaru, with enough bites to keep everyone occupied.

Fishing with PE1 Gear and Light Sinkers

One of the highlights was fishing with PE1 gear and light sinkers. The lighter setup made every bite more obvious and gave even the table-sized bottom fish a good account of themselves.

Light tackle is especially enjoyable when the current permits its use. It provides better sensitivity, makes it easier to detect smaller bites and turns an ordinary bottom fish into a much more entertaining fight.

Tenya Fishing for Parrotfish in Desaru

The parrotfish seemed to enjoy the tenya presentation. Fishing tenya with light tackle made the bites and fights even more enjoyable, although we had to deal with plenty of smaller nibblers near the bottom.

Fishing with Ah Long at Desaru

This was another enjoyable and fuss-free trip with Ah Long from Tanjong Lompat. There was no need to rush around chasing trophy fish. We simply travelled offshore, dropped our rigs and enjoyed a steady session of Desaru bottom fishing.

We eventually finished early and headed back for makan. Sometimes, a relaxing day with light gear, table-sized fish and good company is all that is needed.

The catch may look modest in the photographs, but the retained fish were respectable table-sized specimens. We released the smaller fish and kept a selection of good-eating bottom fish.

A few bigger fish managed to escape, so there is still unfinished business at this Desaru fishing spot. That gives us a good excuse to return for another trip with Ah Long.

Desaru Fishing Trip with Ah Long Fishing Charter Malaysia

A decent Desaru fishing catch despite five cut-offs from Spanish mackerel, locally known as batang.

We returned to Malaysia for another Desaru fishing trip with Ah Long Fishing Charter. Fishing around Tanjong Lompat can be unpredictable, but this two-day offshore adventure gave us a decent mixture of reef fish, plenty of cut-offs and the usual Baktao fishing kakis entertainment.

The wind made fishing more challenging at times, but we still managed to put together a respectable catch. We also encountered several Spanish mackerel, commonly known as batang, although they won most of the encounters by cutting our lines.

Desaru Fishing Trip Details

Fishing at Tanjong Lompat, Desaru

We set out from the Desaru jetty for the fishing grounds around Tanjong Lompat. Conditions were slightly windy, which affected our drifts and made bait presentation more difficult. Nevertheless, the group continued working the bottom and exploring different areas throughout the trip.

Desaru fishing trips can produce a mixture of reef and pelagic species. This makes the area suitable for anglers who enjoy switching between bait fishing and jigging, depending on the current and activity below the boat.

Our Desaru Fishing Catch

Our overall catch was decent considering the conditions and the number of fish that escaped. Several Spanish mackerel attacked our rigs during the trip, but we were cut off approximately five times.

Batang have extremely sharp teeth, so landing one without a suitable leader can be difficult. Their sudden strikes still provided plenty of excitement, even though we did not manage to bring them aboard.

The fish we landed included a selection of good-eating reef species. The catch was not spectacular in size, but there was enough variety to keep everyone interested.

Bottom Fishing and Slow Jigging in Desaru

We used a combination of baited bottom rigs and slow-jigging setups during the trip. When fishing the seabed, it was important to use enough weight to maintain contact despite the wind and current.

Our setups included:

Shimano Torium 16HG with PE2.5 braided line
Mustad circle hooks in sizes 3/0 and 5/0
Slow jigs weighing between 80g and 120g
Live-bait rigs using sabiki-caught selar and tamban
Fresh squid and live prawns for bottom fishing

Jigging allowed us to explore the middle and lower sections of the water column for more active fish. However, the Spanish mackerel in the area made things risky. A jig can disappear very quickly once a batang slices through the leader.

Anglers planning a similar trip should bring sinkers and jigs in several weights. The most suitable weight will depend on the water depth, current and speed of the boat’s drift.

Fishing with Ah Long Fishing Charter

This was another enjoyable local-style fishing trip with Ah Long Fishing Charter in Desaru. Conditions were not perfect and several promising fish escaped, but that is part of offshore fishing.

The combination of accessible fishing grounds, reef species and the possibility of encountering larger pelagic fish makes Desaru a popular short fishing getaway for anglers travelling from Singapore.

Final Thoughts on Our Desaru Fishing Trip

It was not a record-breaking catch, but it was still a productive weekend considering the windy conditions and repeated cut-offs from Spanish mackerel. We returned with several good-eating fish and, more importantly, another memorable fishing trip with the kakis.

As usual, we arranged the catch at the end of the session for the compulsory group photograph. Apparently, the fish must also be straightened before the photo can be taken!

So the group managed to pull together some Sam Law and Ah Fong fishing trips (local Singapore fishing trips) over the past few months. I haven't managed to update due to being super busy, so posting a few photos to archive the trips!

Sabiki rigs were working too. It was my first time using sabiki the whole day and I was quite satisfied to catch a few fish.

We visited Brother Fishing Pond in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru, for a fun session targeting giant trevally with light tackle and a handline fishing rod.

Sherwin, Vinz, Su Yin and I made the short trip across the border to test a handline rod created by Jeff from RodStation. Instead of bringing only the usual lures, we arrived with plenty of interesting fish baits, including salmon, barramundi and grouper.

The fish certainly seemed to enjoy our unusual bait selection!

Giant Trevally Fishing at Brother Fishing Pond

Brother Fishing Pond has become a familiar destination for anglers looking to experience GT pond fishing near Singapore. The pond is located at Kampung Sungai Danga in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru.

Testing the RodStation Handline Fishing Rod

The main purpose of this fishing trip was to test the handline fishing rod created by Jeff from RodStation. Unlike a conventional fishing rod, the compact handline setup provided a very direct connection between the angler and the fish.

A hard-fighting GT can make even conventional tackle feel underpowered, so fighting one with the handline rod was especially entertaining. The setup may look simple, but controlling a powerful fish at close range still requires care.

Light-Tackle GT Fishing

We also landed several GTs using eging rods and other light fishing setups. Fighting a giant trevally on light tackle is always exciting because the angler must manage the drag carefully and prevent the fish from overpowering the setup.

The lighter rods made each run feel more dramatic and gave us a good workout. Su Yin also managed to land his first GT during the session.

Using Fish as Bait for GT Pond Fishing

Instead of relying entirely on artificial lures, we brought a wide selection of natural fish bait. The menu included pieces of salmon, barramundi and grouper.

Once we started berleying, the pond quickly came alive. Almost anything that entered the water seemed to attract attention and produce a hook-up. We also received a good number of hits on spoons.

Luring almost felt like a sham here. Very little complicated technique was required once the GTs began feeding aggressively!

We had fun experimenting with different fish baits.

In case you all don't know yet, a new prawning pond has opened at 10 Neo Tiew Lane 2! Called Olden Days Prawning, the prawning pond is opened daily and 24 hours.

What was the most surprising for me is their current price for prawning. They are doing it at 1 hour - $9.99, 2 hours - $15.99 and 3 hours - $19.99. Quite a good deal as these are way below prawning pond rates.

The location isn't new and used to be operated by Ah Hua Fishing and Prawning.

Tuas Night Offshore Fishing with Wreckhunter

Looks can be deceiving. This stingray turned out to be the food highlight of the trip.

It had been almost two years since our previous squid fishing trip with Wreckhunter, so everyone was looking forward to catching some chomek.

More accurately, we were looking forward to eating live chomek with Maggi. Fishing was almost secondary.

We prepared our night fishing gear at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, commonly known as RSYC, before setting off for the waters around Tuas. Departing from RSYC brought back plenty of memories because I have joined many Singapore fishing charters from the club over the years.

Fishing with Sir Cain

Joining us was Sir Cain, the cousin of Emmanuel, who runs a Korean fishing guide service. We were pretty stoked because we had seen Cain in action before. He is a beast when it comes to pumping fish up from the bottom.

The main target that night was still chomek. Frankly speaking, catching fish was secondary because everyone was thinking about fresh squid and noodles.

We scooped approximately 40 chomek at Tuas. About 20 went directly into our meal, while the rest were set aside as live bait for fishing.

Our plan was simple. If the live chomek ran out, we would switch to kelong sotong or frozen squid. After all, our stomachs were more important than catching fish.

Fresh chomek has a natural movement and scent that can attract many bottom-feeding species. The difficult part was deciding how many pieces to reserve for bait and how many to put into the Maggi.

This time, we cooked Korean instant noodles with the freshly caught chomek. The combination of salty soup and naturally sweet squid was divine.

Few onboard meals can beat freshly caught squid cooked immediately at sea, especially during a long night fishing trip.

Cain’s Surprise Stingray

The fishing action began almost immediately when Cain received a solid take. The fish pulled out a surprising amount of line before Cain regained control and began bringing it towards the surface.

Within five minutes, we saw some colour. Everyone was surprised when a very tasty-looking stingray appeared beside the boat.

Based on the way it ran, some of us initially guessed that it might be a large golden snapper, commonly known as ang cho. The stingray did not resist in the way we expected, and Cain managed to bring it up relatively quickly.

Was It the Best-Tasting Stingray?

Upon closer inspection, we thought the ray looked like excellent eating quality. It was meaty, had white spots and a long tail. The fish was also brought to the surface quickly.

We believed it would taste good even with a simple preparation such as steaming or boiling. Cain remained doubtful and did not believe us at first.

He later said it was the best fish he had eaten in his life. Looks can indeed be deceiving.

A Surprisingly Diverse Tuas Catch

The rest of the fishing was relatively lukewarm. Sherwin landed another ray that also looked suitable for the table.

What made the trip unusual was the number of different species caught. We landed three types of cephalopods:

Chomek squid
Green-eye squid
Octopus

We also landed eight fish species, while one barracuda was lost beside the boat. At one stage, almost every fish that came aboard was a different species.

This was quite different from our usual Wreckhunter trips, where golden snapper often dominate the catch.

Cleaning the Stingrays

After the fishing, the guys spent about an hour cutting and cleaning the rays. Processing a stingray properly takes some effort, but the resulting meat made the work worthwhile.

Final Thoughts on Our Tuas Night Fishing Trip

Whatever though. As mentioned earlier, the chomek Maggi was more important than the fishing.

We also had plenty of fun talking cock onboard, catching up with abang and enjoying the night at sea. The fishing may not have been spectacular, but the squid, stingrays, variety of species and onboard meal made it a memorable trip.

We are already looking forward to the next chomek squid and Maggi fishing trip in Singapore.

Jeju Hirasuzuki Fishing Guide: Blackfin Seabass in Korea

Our hirasuzuki fishing experience on Jeju Island, South Korea.

I never imagined that I would go fishing in Korea. When the opportunity to fit some fishing into our Jeju family holiday appeared, I could not say no.

The goal was to catch and eat hirasuzuki, commonly known in English as blackfin seabass. I had heard mixed opinions about its fighting ability, but I was extremely curious about how a wild Korean hirasuzuki would taste.

To make the trip possible, I engaged Hyunwook, also known as Duke, as my fishing guide in Jeju. He speaks English, knows the local shore fishing locations and provided the equipment needed for the trip.

Combining a Jeju Family Holiday with Fishing

This trip to Jeju was primarily a family holiday, so I only had one or two nights available for fishing. Fortunately, Hyunwook explained that night fishing for hirasuzuki was normal and recommended.

The arrangement worked well. I spent the daytime exploring Jeju with my family before heading out for night fishing.

I did not bring rods, reels or other fishing equipment from Singapore. Hyunwook provided the necessary gear, which made the experience much easier to fit into a family trip.

If you are visiting Korea with your family and wondering whether you can squeeze in a fishing session, it is certainly possible. Night fishing allows anglers to pursue a bucket-list species without sacrificing the entire family itinerary.

Where We Stayed in Seogwipo

My family and I stayed at GoldOne Hotel & Suites in Seogwipo. We enjoyed the view, and the hotel offered reasonable value during our stay.

According to Hyunwook, its location was also convenient because it was near several of the Jeju fishing spots we planned to visit.

What Hirasuzuki Fishing in Jeju Was Like

I will be honest. The fishing was tough, technical and physically demanding.

We were shore fishing from rocky areas at night. The sea was relatively calm and the hirasuzuki were not particularly active. We had to look for shoreline drop-offs, observe where baitfish were gathering and cast into specific areas rather than simply covering water blindly.

The technique was more specialised than much of the fishing we normally do in Singapore. We used long shore-casting rods with small diving pencils, sinking pencils and shore minnows.

Learning how to work these lures around the rocks and drop-offs was a new experience for me. It was certainly more interesting than blindly casting soft-plastic lures.

Important: Rock fishing can be dangerous, especially at night, in cold water or during rough conditions. Use a knowledgeable local guide, wear suitable safety equipment and avoid exposed areas when conditions are unsafe.

Losing Three Powerful Fish in Jeju

At one location, madai and kingfish were crashing into baitfish near the surface. Seeing large madai attacking baitfish was completely alien to me.

My first major hit came while I was casting along the side of a drop-off. The fish took line for almost ten seconds. Hyunwook began cheering when I hooked up, but the excitement quickly turned into disbelief when the fish escaped.

I could do little more than load the rod and hold on. When the lure returned, one of its treble hooks was missing.

The second fish behaved differently and continued diving. Its powerful, dogged runs reminded me of a madai. It made another run near the end of the fight before the hook pulled. This time, the lure returned with two treble hooks missing.

The third fish was not as large, but it still managed to open the split rings and escape. Losing three fish in quick succession was painful, but it was also one of the most exciting parts of the trip.

We upgraded the terminal tackle the following night, but the large fish never returned. That is fishing.

Hirasuzuki Bites and Fishing Technique

During the two nights, I learnt that light taps and short bites are common when fishing for hirasuzuki. A fish may touch or strike the lure without becoming properly hooked.

Successful hirasuzuki fishing requires anglers to read the shoreline, identify current lines and drop-offs, locate baitfish and present a lure at the correct depth.

The following lure types were used or recommended:

Small diving pencils
Sinking pencils
Shore minnows
Other slim-profile hard lures that imitate local baitfish

Tips for Planning a Jeju Fishing Trip

These are my main lessons for anyone considering a guided fishing trip in Jeju:

Get enough rest: Casting continuously into the early hours is physically tiring.
Plan more than one fishing night: Weather and fish activity can be unpredictable.
Keep your schedule flexible: Leave some evenings open in case conditions change.
Prepare for multiple locations: The guide may visit several fishing spots during one night.
Be physically prepared: Rock fishing may involve climbing, balancing and wading.
Use a translation app: Papago can help when communicating in Korea.
Confirm equipment requirements: Ask the guide exactly what will be provided.
Put safety first: Do not attempt unfamiliar rock-fishing locations alone.

I told him that my main objective was to catch and eat interesting Korean fish. Although the fishing was difficult, he did everything he could to secure fresh fish for our meals. He even contacted friends to obtain fresh madai and amberjack for us.

Hyunwook was familiar with the local Jeju fishing spots and understood how to handle a fresh catch properly. He performed ikejime before bleeding, gutting and cleaning the fish carefully.

He even went fishing again after dropping me at the hotel at 5am. When I asked why, he said he wanted to make sure we had fish to eat. It is safe to say he is a fishing addict!

What Does Hirasuzuki Taste Like?

Eating hirasuzuki was a new experience for me. We prepared the blackfin seabass Japanese-style as sushi and sashimi.

I particularly enjoyed the back meat because it was soft. The flavour did not remind me strongly of ordinary seabass. It was closer to a lightly flavoured snapper, with a balanced sweetness and rich texture.

The fish was fatty without tasting fishy. If I catch another hirasuzuki, I would also like to try pan-searing it or using it in fish soup.

We also ate Korean-caught kanpachi, or amberjack, and tai, or madai snapper. Delish!

Jeju hirasuzuki fishing was much more technical and physically demanding than I expected. The fishing was tough, three powerful fish destroyed our terminal tackle and the target species did not make things easy.

Despite that, the experience fitted surprisingly well into a family holiday. I could spend the day with my family, fish at night and finally taste the blackfin seabass I had travelled to Korea for.

Having an experienced local guide made a major difference. Hyunwook provided the equipment, selected the fishing spots, prioritised safety and worked hard to make the trip memorable.

Sam Law Fishing for Sagai 2023

Behold... on this trip, we had purposely sought out sagais because we were bored and wanted to just harvest fish. We were so desperate and only bought 1/2 kg of live prawns which we didn't really use anyway.

Strangely though, we caught all sorts of interesting reef fish before the "sagai" fishing started. Ah Bao even caught a coral trout on what he called "mao" or feather. We also used sabiki rigs to catch plenty of baby yellowtail barracuda aka kamasu. These are super tasty by the way, but it is a story for another day.

When the current was about to pick up, off we want for sagai. Sam was fairly confident and recommended "long-line" and sabiki jigging. Long-line usually refers to a very long horizontal presentation (think 4ft of leader) with a feathered jig or hook at the end. One would just let it flow out and impart a jig stop motion to imitate flapping bait/krill.

Wooohooo, caught one of the target fish on Berkley aji using long line method! No fight at all. But that is not important.

But, the fish weren't biting and even when the pros came over in another boat, bite was still lukewarm. We managed some hits though and I caught a selar pan (also known as shima aji) that was too delicious!

Lawrence and Sam thought got some unwanted bycatch... In another video, Sam got spooled by a shark.

Desaru Fishing with Ah Long in May 2023

Man, this trip is radical on many levels. I don't even know how to describe it. If you thought this Desaru fishing trip was already kind of weird, this one came out tops.

Basically, only one spanish mackeral aka tenggiri was landed, one got busted at boatside. After that some Malaysian boat got jealous and drove straight into the school we were fishing at and then we ended up at a Durian stall.

Better late than never to update a catch report! Was a brilliant day to go fishing and we mostly fished around the Pulau Tekong breakers. Didn't catch anything substantial this trip, mostly having fun with my eging rod.

The lads pulled up some decent fish although the overall catch wasn't fantastic.

Pulau Ubin Barramundi Luring and Changi Mangrove Jack Fishing

We joined experienced Singapore angler Jimmy Lim for a day of lure fishing around Pulau Ubin and Changi.

The fishing plan involved two different approaches. We first cast lures around the mangrove areas of Pulau Ubin in search of barramundi before trolling around Changi Carpark 7 and Changi Bayview for mangrove jack.

Barramundi Luring at Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin’s mangrove environment provides the type of structure commonly associated with barramundi. Fallen branches, mangrove edges, current lines and changes in water depth can all provide ambush points for predatory fish.

We worked artificial lures around the likely holding areas while fishing with Jimmy. Accurate casting was important because the fish could be positioned close to cover.

Barramundi are powerful fish, especially immediately after the hook-up. Anglers need to remain prepared for sudden runs, jumps and rapid changes in direction.

Tips for Mangrove Barramundi Luring

Cast close to mangrove edges and visible structure.
Look for drains, drop-offs and areas where currents meet.
Vary the retrieve speed until the fish respond.
Pause the lure occasionally to imitate an injured baitfish.
Use suitable leader material around abrasive structure.
Be prepared to apply pressure before the fish reaches cover.

Mangrove Jack Trolling Around Changi

After the Pulau Ubin luring session, we switched tactics and trolled around Changi Carpark 7 and Changi Bayview for mangrove jack.

Mangrove jack are aggressive predators that are often associated with structure. Although they may not grow as large as barramundi, they are powerful fighters and can quickly return to cover after taking a lure.

Trolling allowed us to cover more water while keeping the lures moving through likely fish-holding areas. The lure’s swimming depth, trolling speed and distance behind the boat all affected the presentation.

Tips for Trolling for Mangrove Jack

Use lures that swim at the appropriate depth.
Check that each lure is tracking correctly beside the boat.
Adjust the amount of line behind the boat to change the presentation.
Concentrate around structure, current lines and depth changes.
Keep the drag firm enough to stop a fish from reaching cover.
Inspect leaders and hooks regularly for damage.

Barramundi vs Mangrove Jack Fishing

Both barramundi and mangrove jack can be targeted with artificial lures, but the fishing approach may differ depending on the location and available structure.

Barramundi: Often targeted by casting around mangroves, drains, drop-offs and current lines.
Mangrove jack: Commonly associated with structure and may be targeted by casting or trolling suitable diving lures.
Barramundi fight: Powerful runs, jumps and sudden changes in direction.
Mangrove jack fight: Fast, aggressive runs towards nearby cover.

Fishing Around Pulau Ubin and Changi

The waters around Pulau Ubin and Changi offer a mixture of mangrove, coastal and channel fishing opportunities. Fish activity will depend on the tide, current, weather and availability of baitfish.

Anglers should also remain aware of boat traffic, restricted areas and changing weather conditions when fishing in these waters.

Final Thoughts

This trip provided a good mixture of Singapore barramundi luring and mangrove jack trolling. It was also a valuable opportunity to fish with Jimmy Lim and observe how he approached two different target species.

Whether casting around the Pulau Ubin mangroves or trolling through the Changi waters, lure placement and presentation remained important throughout the trip.

Barramundi Fishing at Sembawang Coastline

"Net, net! Drag on the beach. Woohoo! Uncle Du, you are amazing!"

I was super far when I heard the commotion and I ran over as fast as I could. When I got there, the scene was a little of relief and amazement. I think Ah Du also didn't believe it. After 5 years of trying, he finally got what he wanted – a wild barramundi from the shoreline. This, after missing a gigantic one on topwater pencil just half an hour ago.

We got down to the beach to properly land the fish and took a few photos for keepsake. Had a few laughs and texted Sherwin to rub it in.

Wonderful day to be out at sea today as a friend brought his kid out for some fishing. The lad is totally into fishing and has wonderful sea legs. Bite rate wasn't that great but we had some fun fishing with Ah Fong.

Those who know me will know that I am passionate about bringing kids out fishing but through the parents or guardians as it is more sustainable. Bringing kids fishing or teaching them fishing also shouldn't be about profit making, no matter how well you argue the sustainability case. Some things are better off like that.

Merchong Malaysia Tee King Chong Fishing 2023

King Chong built a new platform for catches. Extremely useful!

Merchong! It’s been too long (yes it even rhymes) since we had a full-fledged fishing trip there. Merchong is actually situated at Nenasi, Malaysia. It’s after Rompin and just before Pekan. For the unacquainted Singaporean, fishing spots between Rompin, Pekan and Merchong are generally the same so they share the same fishing seasons and fishing styles. Many times, those fishing these areas may actually go to Tioman for fishing. Fishing is done in the wee hours for best fishing and so that they do not need to compete with too many boats. It is important to know where you are fishing exactly and where you are launching from. Boats from the areas above generally only have fishing licenses to fish the Pahang area and not the mersing or below area (e.g. Sibu, Sedili, Desaru) as these are considered under Johor Bahru.

After breakfast in JB, we headed out to Restoran 23B Rompin which was formerly situated in Rompin town centre but moved to the countryside. At the restaurant, we ate the famous Tapah fish (also know as Wallago catfish), Bak Su Gong catfish, river prawns and wild jungle frogs. It’s actually kind of weird to call it river seafood because technically, the food comes from the river, not the sea. But, oh well, never mind.

We thoroughly enjoyed the catfish and some of us ate the best steamed fish in our life (including me, the fussy fish eater). This place is highly recommended if you have the time! I would pretty much agree that freshwater catfishes can blow away all the saltwater fish I have eaten.

We also went to the private beach

After the exotic and tasty lunch, we continued on to King Chong’s Merchong Chalet where we would be settling down. The one thing I love about fishing at Merchong is everything is contained within the kampong. The chalet, cookhouse, entertainment area, jetty (and live prawns) is all contained within each other so every morning you just have to wake up, eat breakfast, put your fishing things on the pickup and walk to the jetty.

Compared to Pekan or Rompin, you don’t have to drive here and there to find food or bait. You also don’t have to squeeze with others and talk to other people because the kampong is private and there are more dogs and cats than humans. Perfect for me because I hate talking to people.

After we settled down, we prepared our loots for dinner. We had rustic cuts of steak from Foodie Market Place, wild caught lobsters and sea prawns bought from local fishermen from Mersing/Endau. We ended up grilling the steaks and lobsters (decadent!).

Leftovers were used to make stewed HK beef and lobster porridge for breakfast. It was quite decadent but Ah Bao was not here, so we went all out.

Day 1 of fishing

After the first day of pigging out which felt like a few weeks of fishing, we finally went out fishing on day 1. We speculated for days about the wind and were also fairly inspired by another kaki’s catch. TLDR: it was Hawaii Five O for almost the whole day. Multiple man down and Lawrence was out flat. It was kind of hard for me as well as I had a splitting headache due to the rocking but managed a decent tuskfish aka eng ko. It was not humanely possible to cast or jig so baiting all the way!

The rest of the lads also landed quite a couple of quality fish. Biao lost a few good ones suspected to be big coral trouts and tuskfish. King Chong landed a random, outcast ebek which wasn’t in our target fish list. No idea why almost every catch report has to have a single ebek or chermin spoil the picture. Our day 1 catch spread on Baktao TikTok.

Day 2 was the same as Day 1. The wave height was slightly lower but was more intense so it didn’t make a big difference. Again, multiple man down but it was redemption time for Biao as he landed his good coral trout. Vinz also landed a coral trout on Jackall Bigbacker vibe (he is my fishing idol for casting in such conditions). Decent table fare was also landed and David landed a golden chawali aka blang aka boon nang aka known as golden chuwani.

Fun fact of East Coast of Malaysia (including Singapore): Just like how August to October is the green eye squid aka chemak season, March is the season of the cuttlefish aka baktao. We caught probably 10 or more big baktao during our trip. Some are sun drying on top of King Chong’s boat. See this TikTok video for cuttlefish cleaning!
