Mother's Day Flowers

My family knows me well enough to know that for special occasions I will always prefer a flowering or even a simple green plant that will last for months over a floral arrangement that may last only a week.

Here are my Mother's Day flowers, already hung on the patio cover! When the flowers are spent, I can replant new flowers in the container as well. :)

We also had a fabulous dinner last night at the Chart House in Dana Point with a lovely view of the harbor.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there, including my own awesome mom!!!! :)

Carrot Love

One of the things I love most about my CSA box is the regular inclusion of organic carrots! I have never tasted carrots so amazing in my life and this fact alone would make the CSA box worth ordering every other week! We eat them raw, use them in soups or stews as part of a Mirepoix, or slice them in salads. However, my absolute favorite way to serve these jewels of nature is to roast them!

To roast these amazing organic carrots, simply wash (I compost the tops or, more often, give them to my friend with the lop-eared bunny), peel (though this is not necessary particularly with these carrots), and cut as you'd like. Pour some olive oil onto your clean hands and rub onto the carrots. Sprinkle with sea salt. Roast in a 450 degree oven for about 30 minutes.

Oh so good.

ORCHIDS in the CASA

Hello! I know it's been a while. So busy with work and family...trying to coordinate my college boy's summer plans with the rest of the family's and all the while working on college plans for our next child. It's been good, all good, but has not left me with much time for creative projects (which I do love!).

Today I thought I would share some images of orchids around the house. Many are pretty spent and will need to go into hibernation mode soon, including the plants above and below this text. Still, they are pretty and brighten up any room.

I will be honest...I used to be a bit intimidated by orchids and avoided them for the house. However, I have found that they are easy to care for, often bloom for 3 months or more, and add a dramatic touch to a room. I rarely buy cut flowers anymore....I either enjoy the orchids, the topiaries throughout the house, or I fill vases with cut roses from our TINY BACKYARD. I find that this saves me money and it just feels more natural right now.

Did you know that orchids symbolize love and beauty? How can you go wrong with that combo?

Fertilizing Camellias with Coffee Grounds

So....after my confession last week (click HERE if interested), I thought I would post something helpful on green living. :)

Here in SoCal we have several Camellia bushes, red in front and pink in the backyard (click HERE to see the front yard, and/or click HERE to see our little backyard). They are an acid loving plant and do well in SoCal thanks to our mild winters as long as they are in filtered light (they do not like direct sun).

Anyway, my husband is the coffee maker and we use a French Press for our coffee each morning. So rather than fertilize these flowers with a commercial fertilizer, we simply add our coffee grounds with a little water near their stems.

I think this has been the best year yet for the backyard blooms! So if you have an acid loving plant, you may want to at least try using coffee grounds at the base of your plant before dumping them into the compost.

Swiss Chard Pesto

I often get Swiss Chard in my CSA box and typically make a variation of these Tartlets, which are fantastic. But I wanted to try something that my husband would get a bit more excited about and wondered if I could make a pesto instead.

I have made it twice now and it has been a big hit. He has had it on pasta as well as spread onto pizza for the "sauce," as well as onto crackers as a "dip."

Here is what I do:

Wash the chard well. I have found that this is important, as bits of sandy or muddy dirt can house itself onto the stems easily.

Cut up the entire bunch.

Next, sauté the chard in olive oil with about 5 minced garlic cloves until wilted. I usually put the top on this pan for a bit to wilt and cook the mixture down.

When the chard is cooked, let it cool a bit. Then process it with about 1C of nuts (I used raw cashews and pecans here, but you could use pine nuts as in traditional pesto or walnuts...honestly, I use what I have on hand for these kinds of things), 1/2C EVOO, 1/4C parmesan cheese, and some sea salt and pepper. Add some lemon juice toward the end of the processing (about 1.5T).

Take out the pesto and taste it. Add more sea salt if needed.

When you are finished it is a lovely pea green color (reminds me of that book that began "the owl and the pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat..." anyone recall that one???).

This pesto gets better with time. Store in the fridge or freeze for later.

On Wastefulness and Trash: A confession

Hi Friends.

I seriously strive to reduce my carbon footprint. And most of the time, I am pretty darn good. Here are some ways I manage to do this: (please click HERE). As you can see, I utilize a CSA program, shop bulk whenever possible, compost, avoid single use plastic like the plague, reuse everything I can, ditch disposables as much as possible, and even drive a Prius. I eat mostly vegetarian, use cloth napkins and am practically offended when someone quickly bags my items into a plastic bag before seeing my shopping totes.

But from time to time, I falter. Here is one clear example of utter failure from a zero waste point of view:

This is my younger son's Easter basket which he will receive tomorrow. He is only home for 2 more years and thus I indulged myself.

The funny thing is that I grabbed all of the contents of said basket on auto-pilot while at Target (I try to avoid Target) on my far-too-short lunch half-hour from work.

Included is a monstrous mix of mylar wrapping, plastic bottled hygiene products, single use face-wash wipes, and two decent mechanical pencils packaged obnoxiously. I realize that some of this material can be recycled, but the truth is that we all need to significantly reduce the amounts we are recycling as well. If you are not sure as to the "why" of this, please do some research.

We will ignore the fact for the present that the candy is unhealthy and the jelly beans are likely dyed with who-knows-what, okay? This post is about my wastefulness for now. ;)

At least the wooden basket has been used since my son was a baby, as well as the green plastic grass inside which you cannot see!

College son received a simple recyclable card with a $20 bill inside which was mailed to him. Much better.

Next year, should I choose to indulge myself again in providing a basket for our younger son, it will be filled with bulk candy and nothing in a plastic container. That is my promise.

I think the purpose of this post is just to remind myself and anyone else out there how easy it is to give into the "norm" and excesses of holidays. The fact that I enjoy filling an Easter basket is part of tradition and family love. It is important that traditions continue while I continue working on a greener life.

The beautiful North Coast

Hello! I have really neglected this little blog. I feel I am in a personal battle with the clock every day of my life this year. Does anyone out there relate?

Last weekend I took some time out to visit my college boy. We walked miles and miles each day, talked, had some delicious meals together, and watched movies. My idea of bliss, it was just what was needed.

The scenery is simply breathtaking where he currently lives, so I thought I would share just a smattering of my many photos taken.

A special corner

When I am sitting/laying in bed, this is my little view if I am not looking out the window...

I bought the large hand-painted jewelry armoire in Pacific Grove, Ca (one of our potential future living destinations) years ago on a whim and I really have loved it. It has so many compartments for my costume jewelry and I keep two swimsuits and other clothing odds and ends in the lower drawers since I don't have THAT much jewelry. :)

The sides expand out to hold necklaces, and the top opens up and has a mirror, ring slots, etc.

Next to the armoire are two framed photos that I took of the beach where my older son's college is. I had them enlarged and put them in simple black frames with cream matting.

The photos remind me of him and make me feel peaceful all at the same time.

I know my photos are not great in this post....I was having a camera issue but younger son has fixed it so from here on out they should be better.

Over Christmas, we also got new lamps for the bedroom which have made a big difference. Check them out below:

I used the existing lampshades and love the ginger jar bases of these lamps, which also blend with the room's feel better than the old pair did.

Hope winter is almost over for anyone reading! :) We are definitely seeing major signs of spring...and summer will follow in a heartbeat surely.

Gallery Wall(s)...After and Before

Hi Friends! I am quite behind with this little blog, just adding bits and pieces as I can. I am in a season of life in which work, hard work, work outside of the home, has become a priority with one son in his first year of college and the other only 2 years behind. Although I am grateful for the work and of being of service to others, it has honestly been an awful lot. I am a total homebody, and I get restless when I have not spent enough time puttering and just "being" in my house.

Recently our youngest son (age 17 so he is not really young anymore!) mentioned that the walls of our stairwell filled with his art were depressing him. The art was cute and colorful, but old and, with his ever-critical eye, simply "wrong"on so,so many levels. So rather than torture him further, I changed it out with a few still-old black and white pieces he had done in the past along with some photographs both he and I have taken plus three shots that were not taken by us. I found a good deal on-line for white matting so that they would feel like a collection and simply reused my old black frames.

My Humble Superbowl Spread

Hello Friends! We had a very small crowd this year for our Superbowl watching, what with our college son (who usually eats a lot of Superbowl snacks) gone for his second semester. Here is our little spread from last year.

I was a little under the weather the two days leading up to the Superbowl so the idea of shopping for food let alone cooking was just not appealing in the least. However, I wanted to have a little something for the two men left (hubby and younger son). So on Sunday just before the game, I looked around the fridge and cupboards for some inspiration (still did NOT want to go to grocery store), and gathered cheese, crackers, pickles, some celery and three lonesome veggie eggrolls from our freezer.

I also needed a "dip" of sorts, so I combined two cans of tuna with some relish, lots of finely diced onion and celery and mayo to serve with flatbread crackers that had been in the pantry and had gone (shockingly) unopened.

I made the tuna salad a bit more creamy than usual as a dip. It was a huge hit! Cooked up the eggrolls until they were crispy and then cut each in half and served with a mustard on the side.

They thought it was great....little did they know that nothing was planned! :) This was "work with what you've got!" all over again and I am glad they enjoyed it.

Valentine's Mantle

Reused pink ribbon on the wooden heart I spray painted last year, two heart topiaries on sale from the craft store (from which I removed some of their embellishment), carnations, and camelias from my yard. Boom.

Pretty Silver Champagne Bucket and Bust

Just before Christmas I came across this pretty silver bucket in an antiques shop in Olde Towne Orange for 28 dollars. I thought it would make a nice planter. :)

Near the vase was this beautiful man. So I bought him too, for about the same price. :)

Bringing these two in meant that at least two items needed to exit which is never a problem for me, but I still have not taken the donation box in yet! :)

Small Family Room Updates

Hello! Just a few small updates to our rather neutral family room. Above, I restyled the mantle after Christmas in a much "quieter" fashion. The two cachepots were on sale for 50% off and are the only new additions....

I also added this chevron patterened rug (I hear you naysayers thinking chevron is already OUT...yes, I am late again! :))

This room is quite difficult to photograph and the camera is not behaving properly lately, but just to get an idea.

I do like how the rug breaks up the space and makes it a wee bit more interesting.

Super Easy Weeknight Dinner for a Working Mom/Wife/Gal!

Hellooooo! Is it cold where you live? I have been frozen here in SoCal (I realize this is nothing for most people but I honestly am not used to wearing anything but sandals on my feet unless I am out walking in my running shoes!).

Here is a SUPER EASY and FAST dinner. The kind that tastes amazing and requires virtually no effort, plus is warm and satisfying on a cold evening.

I actually wrote this down while hearing a woman who works for Trader Joe's speak at a Christian woman's event, but I changed it slightly. I call it...

AMAZING TRADER JOES SOUP:

Empty two cartons of TJ's Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup into your pot (there is a lower sodium version) and begin to heat.

Add 1 bag of TJ's frozen Chimichuri Rice

Do the usual slow boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer thing until it is right.

This soup tastes amazing! My husband likes to add a bit of sour cream on top, but I don't think it needs a thing!

YUM!

Also....if you are lucky enough to own a decent bread machine (in my opinion every working mom should own a high quality bread machine and a high quality rice cooker...but if you can only afford one of these, get the rice cooker!)....

throw the ingredients in your bread machine for a nice loaf of hot, homemade bread to go with the soup...

If your bread machine has a timing function, use this so that when you walk into your home after working hard all day you smell the wonderful smell of baking bread....then throw the soup together and you are good to go!

I hope this is helpful to someone out there...I know I get crazy trying to figure out quick but tasty things for the family on weeknights.

A coffee and tea bar

There is something downright SUBLIME to me about clusters of similar objects grouped so for a special purpose. I think that this is why I finally succumbed to getting a bar cart even though I am really not much of a drinker at all! Sometimes I've felt myself a virtual throwback to the 1950s and 1960s, and I recall asking my husband if we could get "one of those martini carts that you see in old movies" when we were first married (he found this funny and when I came home with said cart from the Long Beach Antiques Flea Market 25 years later all he could do was to laugh and say "wow, it's finally here!).

So what with our very cold and rainy winter thus far, I decided to corral my coffee and tea supplies so that anyone can easily make a hot drink. Thanks to our Japanese water heater, using one of our French presses or making tea is very easy. And the kids sometimes like to make instant hot chocolate when they are cold. This is a nice little bit of hospitality for my family and any friends that might be over.

I looked around for a tray that would accommodate the items I wanted on this coffee and tea bar, but most of the large trays were either very expensive or would not stand up to water being spilled upon them.

Finally I found this lacquered tray for a steal and thought it would be a fun addition to our kitchen.

Since I live with three males, my decorating must wax masculine lest they rebel!

Included on the cart is a Zojirushi Water Heater, milk frother, tea glass with infuser, packets of Stevia, a large Bodum French Press, and two canisters of loose tea (one Green, one herbal). Coffee mugs are stored in the cabinet above and we always store our coffee in the fridge.

Show and Tell: New Lamp for our Living Room

Just a little something that I picked up recently! The lamp makes a nice addition to our living room, and the more I look at it the more I wish I had purchased two of them!

After Christmas, I was so eager to have our space look quieter. I had all the decorations put away well before New Year's Eve and rearranged the living room furniture for a nice change. Looking at the space with fresh eyes is always helpful and I could clearly see that a more interesting lamp was needed.

I moved the former lamp to our family room so it is still getting a good workout. :)

Happy weekend! I am back to work as of Monday and plan to tackle 2013 with as much peace and joy as possible! I have wholeheartedly embraced our winter break. We've had unusually cold weather for SoCal and I have enjoyed wearing winter clothes, wool socks, and reading by the fireplace. I have also managed to sleep 9 hours most nights and see what a tremendous improvement it has made in me! :)

Green Tip of the Week!

Hi Friends! Whilst discussing Resolutions of New, my youngest son told me on New Year's Eve "Mom, you need to write more on your blog!"

Yes, I have really been struggling to even READ blogs, lately let alone write a post now and then. And my photography skills, while evidencing some improvement this past summer, have slid back into former status!

But he is right and I need to partake in more activities that bring me joy.

SO....my posts will likely be short this year, and my photos of questionable quality, but nevertheless onward we trudge!

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK: SAVE UP ALL REUSABLE WRAPPING AND PASS THE LOVE ON THE NEXT TIME YOU WRAP A GIFT

I still have some remaining gift wrap in my possession (like the birthday paper above), but I am gradually moving toward butcher paper, newspaper, and brown craft paper for my wrappings in conjunction with reused ribbon and reused gift bags. In fact, I have been reusing one gift bag for one of my sons each Christmas for at least 5 years!

The ribbon above was part of a thoughtful gift we received this Christmas. I loved the sheer beauty of this ribbon and decided to use it for my sister's birthday gift, pictured above.

Yes, I did iron the ribbon. :)

My best home improvement projects of 2012!

Hi Friends!

Back in January, I made a modest list of PERSONAL GOALS (which I made only limited progress on) as well as a list of HOME GOALS (which I made good progress on thanks to much help from a talented and budget-minded contractor).

Here are my best home improvement projects of 2012! (Click on any of the CAPITALIZED links for further info on each project).

1. My best and favorite home improvement was our MASTER BATHROOM RENOVATION pictured below:

3. We added bead board, new moldings, and slate flooring to our POWDER ROOM and laundry area...

6. I also worked toward a greener, simpler, and MORE ZERO WASTE (at least less wasteful) kitchen:

7. One item that really was not on my initial list was to REDESIGN TEENAGE SON'S ROOM. This was a fun project that tested my creativity in designing a desk that would work for this artsy boy:

In looking over my 2012 home goals, I realize that I did not repaint the insides of the front door, but I did get a lot of the other little things done, like repainting the interior of our kitchen cabinets, getting new bed skirts for two of our beds...

as well as remaking a little BAR CART, pictured below:

I would love some feedback on any of these projects! Sadly, I do not see nearly this kind of productivity and remodeling for 2013, but I will be thinking on what else I need to do that is budget-friendly while our eldest finishes his first year of college. :)

I think out of all the home improvement projects I have tackled, the master bathroom bath is by far my favorite. I especially love the tub, which contrasts so nicely with the dark floor. I told my husband just the other day that I am so happy that I followed my instincts in designing this room, but the truth is that I waited so long to get started that there was no way my brain could wrap itself around anything BUT a dark floor and white cabinetry. :)

I am definitely getting ready to unwind here, after a busy and stressful few months!

Signs of Christmas 2012

My gosh but I'm late to every party this year, it seems. The term "working mother" just does not do it justice, particularly with a job that drains me of absolutely all I seem to have right now. The tragedy of Friday also hit me hard, especially as a fellow school psychologist was shot in the line of fire...but mostly for those poor parents and surviving school personnel.

But here I am now. Christmas (yes, I will speak that beautiful word, thank you) is upon us, my older son is home from college and in another two days I shall bake cookies.

Here are a few humble (and never new, I might add) Christmas decorations around my house. Far from the over-achieving and breath-taking blogs I now only occasionally visit, I continue to decorate for Christmas in my own little ways that seem to bring comfort to my family.

Our tree continues to be decked with a homemade skirt from my mom and cheetah ribbon joyfully given to me by my friend Brenda years ago.

A basket once on sale from Ballard Designs holds Christmas wrapping ready to be used.

I like to recycle bows from gifts and tie them to my existing plants to add a festive twist. Simple and free. :)

Stockings hung by the chimney with care ;)

New Flooring in the Powder Room

Hi All! It has really, really, really been hard to even read my favorite blogs let alone create a blog post since work started up again about 10 weeks ago! I just cannot seem to get it all done!

Anyway, I thought I would do a short post on our new powder room flooring. I was a bit bummed to say the least, but the Allure flooring that we had put in this room over the summer did not work (here is my original post on the powder room!). The product began separating at the edges and was not adhering well to the subfloor. Fortunately, the Home Depot gave me a complete refund for the product. I really loved the look of the floor, very much, but it was obviously not a good choice in the end in terms of durability.

So then I had the dilemma of choosing a new flooring. I had great difficulty deciding and after much noodling, decided to go with slate. The main reason is that this bathroom attaches to our laundry area and entrance into the house from the garage....thus the entire area needs something practical. So slate it is!

Here is a quick look:

It is a tough space to photograph, but here is an idea....

The color is a pretty gray, but it is versatile so I can simply change out accessories depending on my mood and the seasons. I think the bathroom will look festive with a red rug and some Christmas paperwhites soon, no?

For anyone still with me here, thank you for tuning in! I am in a season of life that requires money to be made and that does not leave time for design projects or even design inspiration, but I am looking forward to decorating the house for Christmas and especially for having my eldest son home from college soon!
