Caching in web applications can be a powerful tool for improving performance and user experience, but it can also lead to some serious bugs if not handled properly. In this blog post, we'll explore one such bug that can occur when using caching in combination with client-side business logic and a service worker.

Let's Understand via this story

Once upon a time,

there was a team of developers working on a web application that was designed to display currency values in different formats. The values were stored in a database and were displayed on the frontend in INR, USD, and GBP. The frontend logic for displaying these values was simple and everything was working smoothly.

One day,

the team received a request to change the way the currency was stored in the database. Instead of storing the values in INR, it was decided to store them in USD. The developers made the necessary changes to the backend and deployed the new version to production.

However, as soon as the new version was live,

the team started receiving complaints from users that the values displayed on the frontend were incorrect. The developers were confused and didn't understand what could have gone wrong.

After some investigation,

they discovered that the problem was caused by the caching of client-side files and the use of a service worker. The frontend logic was still expecting the values to be in INR, but they were now in USD. The cached files were not updated and the service worker was not able to refresh them.

The team realized that

they needed to come up with a solution to fix the problem. They tried different approaches but none of them seemed to work. They were about to give up when one of the developers had an idea.

Let's Check Fundamentals

That's when one of the team member - Baljeet asked team to relook at how we are displaying the values on frontend, on close examined he found one interesting solution.

So, Baljeet suggested that

instead of sending the value from DB.Money, they start sending the value as DB.USDMoney. This would break the old contract and force the frontend to use the updated values. The team was hesitant at first but decided to give it a try.

To their surprise,

it worked! The frontend was now displaying the correct values and the users were happy. The team was relieved and learned a valuable lesson about the importance of being careful when using caching in web applications.

From then on, they made sure to test thoroughly and have a plan in place to handle these issues if they arise again.

How to accept outlook meeting invite via keyboard shortcut ?

There are two ways you can accept a meeting request.

1. when you are browsing list mail (and invite isn't opened)

2. wen you have opened the invite

for 1)

When the meeting invite is the focused email

press SHIFT + F10 this will open the context menu(right click menu of invite)
now press C again C and ENTER
now use common response keyboard shortcut

for 2)

can use ALT + H to navigate to ribbon
C to do the click effect on pull out accept response option
now use common response keyboard shortcut (as below)

Common Response Key

both ways once you select accept you can use any of following to respond

E Edit the response before sending.
S Send the response now.
D Don't send a response.

Yes you heard it right, today the most waited Moto G exclusive launch was announced on Flipkart . With Moto G launch day some very attractive offers too from Flipkart as shown the below pic.

Moto G comes with 2 variants 8 GB storage, and 16 GB storage ( mind you there is no SD card slot for this phone). Both the variants ~~are~~ were available online, yes not any more.

Almost 15 mins of lunch 16 GB Moto G was out of stock on Flipkart site, while 8 gb variants still available for sell, but less than 1 hour of launch before 1.00 the site showed 8 gb also as Out of Stock.. !

Brief : Common functionality in Single Responsible classes as Core module and then use them as per different needs. DRYs out code.
Helps cross cutting concerns e.g. logging.

Functionality -> Encapsulation = Aspect(Wrapper + Single Responsible + Decorator Pattern + Open Close ) == Modular component with good OO

Where we can inject / Hoocks
On Start : immediately prior to underlying functionality
On Success : limited to when no exception
On Exit : when function finishes
On Error : when any exception occur in code

How to Attach to existing function ?
1. Interceptors
generally IoC is used. this way no post compilation - can use IoC configuration.

2. IL Code Weaving
Compile code to dll or EXE and then run through the AOP post processor. Which will inject the code as per hoocks as new dll / exe with aspects attached.

Ever wanted to run excel two separate monitors ?
Ever wanted to open to excel side by side for comparison ?
Follow these steps and then every time you open excel from excel shortcut it will open new instance .
open your file separately in each instance ! now either compare side by side or move each excel instance to separate monitor
This is for Excel 2007 ( let me know if you need for excel 2003).
1. Open Excel Click on File

2. Click on options

3. Click on Advanced

4. Scroll down to General section - Check this “Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange(DDE)”

5. Click ok – close excel – now every excel will open in new instance.

You can do following actions directly from the toolbar:

Commit : Commit changes : Opens Commit Window
Log : Browse the repository : Opens Workbench

Sync: Synchronize Changes : Opens Sync window
Update : Opens Update window

To install this window in visual studio, do following:

GMail launched its new campaign to invite your contacts who are not using Gmail !! ( I never expected google will need campaign to invite to gmail in 2011!!)

as described in post It is simple, go to www.EmailIntervention.com

Either you add email address manually or login to your gmail account and google will pull the contacts. Select the contacts you want to invite to gmail, select email template ( you can also edit the text if you want) and invite them

I found something interesting while i was selecting contacts to invite. The contact picker showed thet Go@Blogger.com and Picasa-Support@Google.com were in list!! Meaning that they are not in Gmail ?? !! Thats when i realize the contact picker just removed the @Gmail.com contacts and all other emails were shown, where as it should even not show the Google apps emails.

It is one of the good way to invite your non gmail contacts to gmail .

Be careful / Problems / Bug / Need Improvement

1. It allows to invite 40 contacts only at one shot, but it never shows a counter like x/40 only when you click send it says select top 40 !

2. The list shows all non gmail contacts always .. after you send invite then also the list is not updated !! Ideally it should remove the invited contacts .

3. Microsoft Exchange spam filter are detecting the invite email as junk / spam email !! ~~I really forgot, but there was one more wired thing with inviting to gmail... i will updated if ...~~

Skype Crash Solution : 26 May 2011

Today Skype was facing some issue. Skype started crashing on all computers (PC and MAC).
To solve this issue ( this is workaround till fix is released)
Windows

Click Start, type run and press Enter. (On Windows XP: Click Start and then Run.)
Type the following and click OK.
%appdata%\skype
Locate and delete the file shared.xml. OR rename it to old.shared.xml
if you can't find the file ensure that hidden files and folders are shown.
Restart Skype.

Mac

Open Finder and locate the following folder:
~/Library/Application Support/Skype
Delete the file shared.xml OR rename it to old.shared.xml
Restart Skype.
