A Century of Scouting: Celebrating 100 Years of the Boy Scouts of America will be on Exhibit in Bracken Library through July 16, 2010 on Bracken 2 West. The exhibit will feature Scout documents, photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia from the William “Jack” Spears Boy Scouts of America Records and Photographs Collection. Jack Spears, a prominent Delaware County Scoutmaster and collector of Boy Scout memorabilia, spent many hours researching the local scout summer camp, Camp Redwing. After his death in 2009, his surviving wife, Cindy, donated a portion of his extensive Boy Scouts collection to the Ball State University Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections. AgeLine was purchased by another publisher and is no longer available to us. Similar content can be found in either CINAHL or Sociological Abstracts. Both databases may found on the databases page.

Art Full Text Has Been Added to the Databases page

Art Full Text contains full-text, abstracts, and citations. It also includes art reproductions appearing in indexed periodicals. The database indexes journals from an international array of peer-selected publications. Coverage includes new artists, contemporary art, exhibition reviews, feminist criticism, and art from Latin America, Asia, and other non-Western art.

Written Legacy: the Writing and Poetry of African American Women will be on display in Archives and Special Collections on the second floor of Bracken Library through April 2010. Celebrate Black History Month and Women's History Month by exploring the writing and poetry of African American women. Archives & Special Collections house a variety of literature by well known African American female authors and poets. Included in the exhibit are Toni Morrison's Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning Song of Solomon; the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks, who was named Poet Laureate consultant in Poetry to the Library of congress; and the writings of actress, playwright, director, autobiographer, and poet, Maya Angelou. Also featured in this exhibit will be Wanda Coleman, Rita Dove, and many more. For more information, please contact Lajmar Anderson at ldanderson@bsu.edu.

Free Trial for Historical Statistics of the United States

Historical Statistics of the United States provides electronic access to the thoroughly revised edition of the five-volume print reference work of the same title. It is fully searchable and downloadable. Topics range from migration and health to crime and the Confederate States of America. Topics are placed in historical context by a recognized expert in the field. Historical Statistics of the United States is available from the Databases page. The trial ends March 26th.

Free Trial for Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000
Women and Social Movements in the United States is a resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000, this collection seeks to advance scholarly debates and understanding about U.S. history generally at the same time that it makes the insights of women's history accessible to teachers and students at universities, colleges, and high schools. The collection currently includes 91 document projects and archives with more than 3,600 documents and 150,000 pages of additional full-text documents, and more than 2,060 primary authors. It also includes book, film, and website reviews, notes from the archives, and teaching tools. Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000 is available from the Databases page. The trial ends March 13th.

Free Trial for Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works is a searchable collection of real transcripts of therapy and counseling sessions and first-person narratives. It also contains reference works. New material is added biweekly. The database currently includes approximately 63,600 pages of material, including more than 16,000 pages of session transcripts, more than 22,000 pages of client narratives, and more than 24,000 pages of secondary reference material. Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works is available from the Databases page. The trial ends December 30th.

Free Trial for Counseling and Therapy in Video

Counseling and Therapy in Video is an online collection of video available for the study of social work, psychotherapy, psychology, and psychiatric counseling. This current release includes 285 videos totaling roughly 314 hours. Counseling and Therapy in Video is available from the Databases page. The trial ends December 30th.

You can keep an eye on your print quota using the Check Print Balance link located in the red box in the lower right corner of the Student Virtual Library page. Login using your BSU username and password and the page will tell you how many pages you have printed, how many pages you have remaining, the date and time of your last print job. It will also provide a log of print jobs for the semester. The information is updated daily.

Dr. Charles E. Braker Orchid Photographs will be on exhibit in Bracken Library through December 30, 2009. This exhibit features the photographs of retired Purdue University professor Dr. Charles E. Braker. The photographs in this collection are the result of Bracker's passion for orchids and photography. Also showcased in this exhibit is the rare four volume edition of Reichenbachia, a 19th century series of books which contain color plates of orchids named after orchidologist, Heinrich Gustave Reichenbach. These books were published in two series, each volume dedicated to a particular queen or empress beginning with Queen Victoria and ending with the Queen of the Belgians. 300 of the top orchid images may also be found in the University Libraries Digital Media Repository. IntelliConnect Has Been Added to the Databases page

IntelliConnect replaces the CCH Internet Tax Research Network database. It provides federal, state, and international tax information. It also includes articles from professional journals and legal information including cases, regulations, and laws.

It easy to use ilocker in the library to save a paper you are working on or an image you are scanning. The public computers in the Ball State University Libraries are configured to map the computer you are logging into to your ilocker account. This means that you can save a file to your ilocker without having to log into your ilocker account. All you have to do us click on File or the Microsoft Office button in upper left corner of any Office 2007 application. Next you click on Save as. Then click on the arrow next the Save in box and select your username on 'ilocker.bsu.edu\users' (W:) and then Save.

Online Access to Books Increased

You may have noticed something new this semester in your searching of CardCat, our library's online catalog. If a book in our collection has a digital equivalent on Google Books, the book will be displayed in the CardCat record. This allows you to read excerpts and in some cases view the entire book online. This greatly enhances access to library materials.

Helen B. and Martin D. Schwartz Special Collections and Digital Complex Dedication

The Helen B. and Martin D. Schwartz Special Collections and Digital Complex dedication ceremony was held on August 17, 2009. The ceremony included remarks from Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora, Vice President for Information Technology Phil Repp,
Dean of University Libraries Arthur Hafner, and Mr. Martin Schwartz.

The Schwartz Digital Complex is a space designed to connect people to digital media assets and special collections available through the University Libraries. The space also includes areas for collaboration and access to televised news from around the world. This technology-rich facility in Bracken Library was made possible by a generous gift from Martin Schwartz in honor of his late wife, Helen.

In order for your students to do their best work it is important for them to be familiar with, and know how to use, the resources available to them. Instructional Services offers library instruction sessions designed around your students' class assignments. Subject-specific sessions are designed to help them locate and evaluate relevant resources. Librarians will help your students develop the information-seeking skills necessary for their academic success. Readers Guide Retrospective, covering a wide range of subject areas, is an excellent source for studying U.S. popular culture in the 20th century. It will help you locate articles from about 375 different general interest periodicals published from 1890 through 1982. The article text, online or in print, can be found using MultiLink from within the database.

Biography Index Retrospective Has Been Added to the Databases Page
Biography Index Retrospective, contains citations to biographical resources for about 300,000 people. It indexes biographical resources published from 1946 through 1983. The article text, online or in print, can be found using MultiLink from within the database.

Education Index Retrospective Has Been Added to the Databases Page
Education Index Retrospective will help you locate articles published from 1929 through 1983 from 500 journals, magazines, and yearbooks. This database is the electronic equivalent of the print title Education Index. The article text, online or in print, can be found using MultiLink from within the database.

Many of the databases on the Ball State University Libraries Articles and Databases page use link resolver technology which allows you to locate the full text of articles not already in full text in the database you are searching. We have named our link resolver "MultiLink." When you are searching in a database you may see the MultiLink button on a query results list. When you click on the button MultiLink looks to see if this article is available in full text in another database. If so, it will take you to the full text of the article. If not, it will allow you to look in CardCat to see if we have a print subscription to the periodical in which the article appears. If the article is not available in print or online you can do an interlibrary loan for the article. MultiLink also gives you the option to do an interlibrary loan and will even fill out the form for you.

The Periodical/Reserves Counter Will No Longer Be Staffed

Beginning May 9th the services offered at the Periodical/Reserves desk will be offered at the Main Circulation desk on the east side of the lobby of Bracken Library. The Main Circulation desk will become the service desk for checking out books, checking out reserve items, placing items on reserves, and picking up interlibrary loan items. Assistance with printer 6, the color printer, and microfilm machines may be obtained in room BL111 which is across from Printer 6.
