Alzheimer’s disease has become a growing global concern, impacting millions of individuals and their families. Dementia, a broader term encompassing various cognitive impairments, affects approximately 55 million people worldwide. With an aging population, the need for effective care and support systems is more crucial than ever. TOTALCARE, a leader in senior living and care, recently hosted a webinar featuring top experts in the field to offer valuable insights and practical strategies for caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s.

According to Dr. Susan Coetzer, Geriatrician and Vice-President of the South African Geriatrics Society, dementia is an umbrella term for various cognitive impairments, with Alzheimer’s being the most common type, accounting for 60-80% of cases. She stressed that early diagnosis allows for better management and improves the quality of life for patients and their families.

Routine and social interaction are critical for individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s. Cornel Nieuwenhuizen, Director of TOTALCARE, stated, “The best way to support the family is to place the resident as number one. Maintaining a good routine, ensuring sufficient social interaction, and providing daily wellness activities are essential. At TOTALCARE, residents engage with therapists, participate in exercises, and enjoy social activities, which are crucial for managing the disease.”

Community support also plays a pivotal role in dementia care. Kim Hellberg, KZN Regional Manager for ADASA (formerly Alzheimer’s South Africa) highlights, “Dementia can be an isolating journey for both patients and caregivers. Community support increases social interaction, provides emotional and psychological support, and enhances safety. ADASA’s initiatives, such as support groups and educational services, are instrumental in empowering communities with effective support tactics.”

Enhancing the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s is a central focus of TOTALCARE’s care approach. Dr. Coetzer explained, “A routine-based day with nutritious meals, regular exercise, and engagement in hobbies is vital for managing Alzheimer’s. Healthy diets and social interactions stimulate the brain and improve overall well-being. “Dementia, in general, has been rising, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused increased social isolation. As the population ages, the incidence of dementia naturally increases. We remain committed to integrating the latest research findings into our care practices, ensuring that residents receive the most effective and compassionate care possible,” expressed Dr. Coetzer.

Planning ahead is vital for families dealing with Alzheimer’s. Nieuwenhuizen stressed the importance of early conversations and planning to respect individuals’ needs and preferences. Meet Brett and Lesely Michielin, two restaurantier pillars in our town whose food is loved far and wide by not just locals but annual holidaymakers as well.

Brett, who is originally from Durban, was previously living in Johannesburg and wanted to return to the coast. In 2007, he decided to make the move, and choosing Ballito was a no-brainer.

Born in South Africa, Lesley grew up in Botswana, living there for 23 years with her parents. She then moved to Johannesburg after finishing her studies, where she started working in restaurants. “Hospitality eventually led me to our beautiful coastal town, where I met Brett,” Lesley reminisces. The happy couple then got married in May 2017 and soon after gave birth to their son, James.

Brett runs the Mozambik Restaurant Group. The decked-out Mozambik Restaurant in Ballito Village is his prized possession, staying true to the Porto Afro-style food and ambience of Mozambique. They offer a delicious variety from prawns and pregos to peri-peri flat chicken and so much more.

Lesley is the proud owner of Burnedale Bistro Restaurant & Venue in Umhlali. This enchanting space has a wide menu offering burgers, steaks, fish, prawns, savoury and sweet waffles and the most delicious, freshly made cakes and treats.

So, how did this amazing, busy couple get into the local food industry? “In 2007, I bought shares into the first Mozambik in Ballito. In 2009, I bought my partner out and we opened our second store in Benoni in 2010. It took some time for the brand to take off, but when it did, it rocketed. COVID was a turning point and we expanded into Southern Africa. We have tripled the group since 2020,” Brett says proudly. For Lesley, after running a few restaurants and function venues, an opportunity arose in August 2020 to be an owner and partner in the now Burnedale Bistro. Nothing makes Brett happier than cooking. “I love the Ballito community. It takes a village to raise a child (and a restaurant!)… that village is Ballito!”

Lesley’s childhood love for baking was passed down from her mum, which reignited as she grew older. Sharing her timeless family recipes with guests brings her immense joy. She thrives on the challenge of creating new dishes, seeing it as a canvas for flavour exploration.

As a family of foodies, Brett, Lesley and James enjoy exploring eateries, supporting local flavours and creating memorable dining experiences at their restaurants. “We strive to offer a warm welcome, delicious food and excellent service, fostering a sense of community where lasting friendships are forged over meals,” Lesley adds.

Their family circle extends past their home to their amazing staff and teams. “Without them, we wouldn’t have the restaurants. They are beside us every day and we strive to support them with all that we do. They are the beating hearts of our restaurants.”

As a couple who are both in the same industry and run their own restaurants, you may wonder whether they work well together or if it’s best to keep everything separate. “We support each other as much as we can, but I think I’m the stubborn one and Brett says I don’t listen (haha!). His famous saying is ‘I think I’ve won!’ (I do let him win sometimes),” Lesley says. However, for Lesley, Brett is her pillar of strength and a great mentor. “He is a brilliant restauranteur with a huge heart of gold for us as a family as well as this incredible community we live in.”

With daily motivation, their passion for food and the most important ingredient, love, this family continues to contribute to the fantastic foodie scene on the North Coast.

Jesse Clegg, a captivating live performer with a career spanning more than a decade, has toured internationally, topping radio charts worldwide and performing at the Springboks’ homecoming after their 2023 Rugby World Cup victory in France. At this year’s ZA Fest, Clegg is set to deliver yet another show-stopping performance.

“I’m planning on performing a really broad spectrum of songs – everything from the hits everyone loves, to some fresh new tracks that I’m excited to share. We aim to create a high-energy, dynamic vibe, where it feels like a party where people can get up and dance. But there will also be moments of heart and soul, with more emotional songs that give a bit of perspective,” says Clegg. Enthusing on the nostalgic feeling of performing in Ballito, Clegg adds, “I haven’t played a festival in Ballito for quite a while. It’s like a homecoming. I’ve always loved performing here and I’m looking forward to feeling the crowd’s energy and introducing them to some of my new material that reflects where I am as an artist.” 

Returning to the ZA Fest, the Ndlovu Youth Choir, renowned for capturing hearts worldwide with their vibrant performances on America’s Got Talent, will also take the stage. Since releasing their first single ‘Shape of You’ in 2019, which won Best Independent Music Video at the Hollywood Music Awards, the choir has achieved numerous accolades, including Best Adult Contemporary Album and an International Achievement Award at the South African Music Awards. “The crowd atmosphere in Ballito was electric. We felt such incredible energy and love from the stage. Although we’ve performed worldwide, our performance in Ballito was a highlight of 2023. We can’t wait to be back,” shared Ralf Schmitt, Artistic Director of The Ndlovu Youth Choir. The choir has toured globally and released three albums, showcasing their remarkable talent.

“Preparing for a performance like ZA Fest involves both mental and physical preparation. We need to be musically and choreographically ready, as well as fit enough to sustain our energy throughout the show. We loved performing in Ballito, and the crowd’s love and joy were unforgettable. We can’t wait to bring that energy to ZA Fest,” added Schmitt.

Supporting these international acts is the dynamic performer Jemma Kate. A singer, songwriter, and dancer, Jemma Kate’s breathtaking performances include a three-piece band and troupe of dancers. Her hit single ‘Sweet Love’ took second place for ‘Song of The Year’ on East Coast Radio, making her a rising star to watch. The cast of “Dream On, A Poppins Tale of Joseph”, will open the stage and kickstart the day’s music extravaganza. This Young Performers Project (YPP) show will be performing at The Playhouse in July.

This year, ZA Fest will feature KAMERS Makers, who are appearing in KZN for the first time, bringing a diverse range of national talent to the region; blending handmade artistry, food, music, and stunning locations into an unforgettable experience. Friends and families can look forward to an array of daily markets over the four day festival along with live music, kid-friendly entertainment and East Coast Radio’s personalities on site to help bring the festival magic to life as the official media partner for the event. I had a cup of the Aristotle, made with three ristretto shots and 180 millimetres of microfoam. A ristretto is a shorter and stronger form of the espresso shot that gives you a bolder flavour. The tasting notes were intense, invigorating and not overwhelmingly bitter. It blended well with the foam component, with both elements balancing each other perfectly.

Our team chose from their variety of hot and chilled drinks. The Dirty Caribbean and White Hot Chocolate were fan favourites, along with the classic cappuccino. The White Hot Chocolate was sweet and smooth, giving it the taste of a marshmallow, while the coconut hints in the Dirty Caribbean added some flair to the drink for those more adventurous.

For those summer days, the freezos or soda pops won’t disappoint. The Watermelon Soda Pop was refreshing and fruity and the Lemonade counterpart was fizzy and light. If you want something with a little more chill, their freezos are just the thing. The Gingerbear Freezo was a great reprieve from the heat, and the ice was not too thick. We also got to enjoy some delicious snacks along with our drinks.

The brownie was soft and melted into chocolatey goodness in your mouth. The chocolate chip cookie, a great pairing with coffee, was crunchy with generous pieces of chocolate.

It was such an awesome experience visiting this lovely little cafe. They will be seeing more of me very soon!

Braiden’s yachting journey began with a life-changing spearfishing trip on his dad’s friend’s catamaran yacht after high school. “I fell in love with being on a boat at sea,” he recalls, leading him to dive into the world of yachting. Choosing yachting over a desk job perfectly aligns with his love for the outdoors and being active. The real thrill lies in global travel opportunities, allowing him to explore the world while getting paid.

Transitioning into yachting wasn’t without challenges, including adapting to the demanding routine, long hours, and homesickness. Yet, shared experiences with crew members transformed these challenges into opportunities for personal and professional growth. The yachting industry has profoundly shaped Braiden’s perspective, fostering an appreciation for home and exposing him to diverse cultures. Some view it as a temporary income source, while others, like Braiden, make it a lifelong career, striving for excellence.

The Mediterranean holds a special place in his heart, offering crew members post-season downtime to explore European countries. Alongside onshore festivals, Braiden has introduced a unique onboard tradition – a crew-organised annual Triathlon fostering a sense of community and making it a memorable, fun event.

His daily routine consists of early morning checks, coordinating activities, overseeing tender preparations, and planning boat movements. For those aspiring to join the yachting world, he stresses the need for specific qualifications.

Whether in deck, interior or engineering, certifications like STCW basic, ENG-1, PBL2, PDSD and PWC are essential for a successful entry. As experience grows, more advanced courses open doors for skill enhancement.

Braiden also advises you to be curious, take initiative, and be resilient. Showing interest, asking questions, and a willingness to learn are crucial. Acknowledging the initial challenges, he emphasises the importance of positivity and kindness for a rewarding career at sea.

Stewardess & Spa Therapist

Meet Kimberly, also known as Kim or Kimi, whose journey into – yachting began as a serendipitous career change after finishing high school at 17. Formerly successful in the beauty industry, managing salons and offering various services, her desire for travel and international work opportunities led her to the yachting world nearly two years ago. The turning point in her decision was the prospect of offering beauty treatments to celebrities on superyachts, expanding her clientele, and introducing exciting changes to her services. Despite facing obstacles such as getting familiar with cultural differences and living in close quarters on smaller boats, Kimberly shares that working on a larger yacht offers more options. On days with guests, her schedule is tight, managing laundry and breakfast service. During guest-free days, the crew follows checklists, addressing tasks before the next trip.

Personally, yachting has transformed Kimberly, leading to improved health, close bonds with the crew, and a deeper appreciation for family. Professionally, she has expanded her beauty services and is studying to broaden her role in the onboard spa.

For aspiring yacht professionals, Kimberly highlights the importance of additional skills and essential courses like STCW, interior crew courses and basic seamanship. She advises gaining experience through temporary or day work to enhance your CV, staying open-minded and true to oneself, and embracing change – a fundamental aspect of the yachting lifestyle.

Michayla Shone (30)

Chief Stewardess

Born and raised in Ballito, Michayla’s educational journey led her from Umhlali Preparatory to Ashton College. After school, she completed a corporate communication degree and delved into the corporate realm as an accounts manager. Simultaneously, she ventured into entrepreneurship with a wedding planning business. In 2016, driven by a desire for global exploration, she made a bold decision. “I soon realised that I wanted to accumulate some capital and decided to start yachting in 2016. Eight years later, I am still in the industry!”

Michayla’s plunge into yachting wasn’t an immediate embrace. Fears of leaving family and uncertainties about an overseas venture lingered. “I definitely didn’t want to go into it initially. I did my courses in Cape Town, sold my car, loaned money from my mom, and then made the jump overseas to a town called Antibes in France where I dock-walked for over a month until I found a job.”

Qualifications are paramount in yachting, and Michayla highlights the significance of the STCW course. ‘Dock-walking’, a challenging process, taught her humility and appreciation, fostering mental and physical resilience. “Dock-walking is not for sissies! Living on half a baguette for lunch and the other half for dinner really made me appreciate what I had at home. I appreciated every job I got thereafter.”

Despite inevitable career crossroads, the eight years abroad provided invaluable lessons in management, leadership and hospitality. She gained confidence and independence. “Personally, I have become a different person.” Michayla’s role as Chief Stewardess involves orchestrating seamless yacht interiors. Mornings start with comprehensive meetings, and days vary based on shipyard or charter activities. Collaborating with the captain, overseeing guest experiences, and managing administrative tasks fill her charter days.

Reflecting on her yachting journey, Michayla offers valuable advice. Having a financial plan, wise money management, and an understanding of sacrifices are essential for those considering a yachting career change.

“Have a plan. Going abroad is a huge sacrifice. You miss birthdays, funerals and weddings, so make sure the sacrifice is worth it by using your money wisely.”
