Open Stage evenings are set in a very informal atmosphere with a very appreciative audience. All levels of classical guitar playing are welcome – players, listeners, ensembles, guitar with other instruments, whatever! You are welcome to bring your guitar to play, or you can just listen to others. While guests are welcome, we encourage anyone who performs to be a BCGS member. The Open Stage evenings give players and listeners a chance to meet other members and the BCGS Board members. The Board is more than happy to answer any questions on the BCGS activities, such as upcoming concerts, outreach programs, and how to volunteer for the BCGS. This is a perfect opportunity for beginners to play elementary pieces in front of a hand-clapping audience, as well as for more experienced players to just have fun sharing their music. YOU ARE NEVER READY TO PLAY, SO JUST COME AND DO IT! There is a 10 minute limit per player. After the playing is over, there will be plenty of time to mingle and enjoy refreshments. Players have the opportunity to earn Performance Certificates – a great way to expand your guitar portfolio. Admission: Free

His unique artistry has been continually described as that of a superb instrumentalist and a superior and elegant musician, possessing a seductive sound and uncommon lyrical gifts. His career has been dedicated to bringing the guitar to the main musical centers of the world. During three decades of concertizing, he has performed across the United Sates from the New World Symphony in Miami to the Seattle Symphony, and from the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to New York’s Lincoln Center. He has appeared with such prestigious orchestras as the Philadelphia Orchestra and with the Boston Symphony under the direction of Seiji Ozawa, in the American Premiere of Toru’s Takemitsu’s To the Edge of Dream. In addition, he appears regularly with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and with San Francisco Performances. His international tours have taken him to some of the most important musical centers in the world, and his recording catalogue includes over a dozen recordings for the EMI label. Hailed as the world’s greatest guitar duo, the Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad have always packed the house for their BCGS concerts. The unique closeness of their musical upbringing resulted in the uncanny ensemble-playing that has inspired a wide range of composers to write works for them, and their virtuosity has made them sought-after musical collaborators of such artists as Yo Yo Ma, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and Dawn Upshaw. With a compellingly varied repertoire that includes Baroque pieces, Gypsy tunes, and the music of Spain and Latin America, the Assads show their audiences that “…they can actually do all those things that you hear on their CD’s!” (The Boston Globe)

Sergio and Odair Assad will hold a master class on Friday, February 8 from 7-10pm in the Rectial Hall at Towson University. Master class is open to all to audit for a $5 fee, payable at the entrance. Performers will be students in the Towson Guitar Department. Registration required HERE

NOTE: This is not a concert, this is a master class - a public lesson - where a guitar student plays on stage for Maestro Russell, and the public is able to observe the lesson.

On Friday, March 2, 2012 from 6 - 9 pm, the BCGS will collaborate with the Towson University in presenting a master class with DAVID RUSSELL. Performers in the class will be students from Towson University Guitar Department.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION WINNERS SHARING A CONCERT!

Rafael Aguirre

Born in 1984, award-winning Spanish artist Rafael Aguirre is one of today’s most celebrated young guitarists. His 13 first prizes at the world’s most prestigious international competitions - a Spanish record - highlight the praise of international audiences and specialized critics alike. Having performed in 18 countries, recent highlights include Carnegie Hall (NY), Tchaikovsky Hall (Moscow), Palau de la Musica (Valencia), and Glinka Hall (St. Petersburg). Composers such as Daniel Real and Sergio Assad have dedicated pieces to him. An associate professor at the Robert Schumann conservatory, he collaborated with orchestras such as the Baden Baden Philharmonic, Malaga Philharmonic, Extremadura Symphony Orchestra, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen and the Syrian National Orchestra.

Petrit Ceku

Born in 1985 in Prizren, Kosovo, Petrit Çeku has won top prizes in a number of international competitions. Among them first price in the All-Croatian Competition in Dubrovnik in 2003; Anna Amalia in Weimar, Germany; Emilio Pujol in Sassari, Italy, and Andrés Segovia in Velbert, Germany. By winning the Pittaluga Competition in Alessandria, Italy, Petrit Çeku established himself as one of the leading guitarists of the young generation. In 2008, he was awarded the The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra Prize as The Best Young Musician of the Year, and his first solo CD was released on the Naxos label.

Mr. Ceku performs regularly with symphony orchestras as well as in chamber music setting with various musicians. This coming season he will tour Russia with the Zagreb Soloists, and he will play solo recitals in the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Switzerland, Canada, Croatia, and in the United States.

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Baltimore Classical Guitar Society, we have decided to hold a silent auction for our original Guitar Celebrity caricatures. Already, the caricature of Manuel Barrueco, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, and the Duo Assad have been purchased. We still have the original caricatures of Eduardo Fernández (our opening concert artist), Andrés Segovia, Pepe and Angel Romero, David Russell, Oscar Ghiglia, and others.
