When I’m out and about with the babies, they’re mess magnets and I’ve had a few moments of despair as I’ve rooted around for the wipes, plus the packets also seem to find a way to open up a bit and wet other items in the bag, or…a few of them dry out. I’m always on the lookout for affordable, ethical, clothing for babies and kids that avoid being bland, and Australian company Eternal Creation who specialise in fair trade clothing that’s been created by Himalayan workshop artisans, certainly fit that bill.
The founder and designer, Frances Carrington, designs the prints and outfits which go from birth to ten years for both sexes, and I’m especially keen on their rompers, like the dotty delight on the right. They currently have 40% off at the moment and calculate shipping based on the weight (for example one item would be around £5.80 postage), and everything is made to order with great attention to detail and dispatched from the workshop. I’m even fascinated by the clothes being sent in cloth packaging which is sealed with stitching and wax - very cool and old style!

Two words: Love it! OK, more than two words… Why oh why isn’t this on sale in the UK yet? A little reminiscent of the thirty six year old iconic Stokke Tripp Trapp, Muji have carved out a league of their own, with this sleek, understated buy, which features armrests that give it a relaxed look, and a seat height that gets adjusted via the hole inserts on the leg frame. Kat - she spotted this on LMNOP - and I will be stalking their press office (not so much as a whistle about it on their site at the moment) to find out when it hits our shores, so for now, we can be pea green or hotfoot it to Tokyo….

Ssss-wooon! I’m a huge fan of Italian designers Magis, from which we already own two of their puppies (the bambino gives them a hug each day) plus two of their Alma chairs and I have plans on eventually getting a couple of their El Baul trunks, and now…me likey their dodo rocking birds a lot! If they seem a little familiar, they’re designed by Oiva Toikka who is best known for his stunning glass bird collection for Iitala, which I’m already a fan of but they’re waay out of my price range!

Part of their Me Too Collection for children, these fun, eye-catching, robust delights are made from rotational-moulded polyethylene, so will stand up to the rigours of kids at play, plus they can also go outside. £126.50 Panik Design

That’s why the concept of The Milk-Saver by US company Milkies had me curious.

Made from BPA and phthalate free plastic, you sit it inside your bra cup on the non nursing side and it collects up the leakage when your milk lets down. It comes with a case that you can stand it up in, plus you can remove the boob cup and fasten any breastmilk bag to it with an elastic band.

I’ve only been trying it out for a few days but must admit to being a tad shocked when 2oz milk had come out on the first try !

You know me, I like a life of ease and I’m finding it much harder to find the time to express second time round, so this is a really clever way of collecting what would have been wasted milk, and then bunging it in the freezer. It could be just me though, but they bill it as portable and discreet, but I look like Robocop with the full ensemble in, so I doubt that I’ll be going shopping in central London with this tomorrow! Here are my favourites…

Antelopeee by Lucie Sheridan Animal Alphabet 11x17 Poster Limited Edition by Stephanie Fizer

All Things Original - Very small but delightful collection of seriously talented British designers and crafters. From furniture, to jewellery, to homewares, clothing, and artwork like the Antelopeee by Lucie Sheridan print above, bookmark immediately!

Artfire - US based and prices all quoted in US dollars, they have a decent sized kids section although there’s not as much contemporary offerings as what you get on Etsy.

Coriandr - Another Brit offering that’s arrived on my radar recently, the children’s and homewares sections aren’t big but they do have some gems in there. They have really good sub categories which make it a lot easy to pin down what you’re looking for. One to watch!

Dawanda - Gathering together independent European sellers, it covers a broad spectrum of goodies but their baby and children section will induce serious shopping palpitations! Don’t let the not so attractive euro exchange rate scare you off. Oh and you can search by colour - oooh!

Etsy - The original and the mac daddy of them all, gathering handmade talent from all over the world in one marketplace. Very heavy leaning towards US sellers and prices are also in US dollars. Exceptionally good for tracking down unique and contemporary gear (so much artwork to salivate over including alphabet posters like the one by Stephanie Fizer above, it’s scary) for your discerning kids, there is some serious talent in there that have hit the big time. There are so many amazing sellers, you may swim in indecision. Or shop a lot… Check out posts featuring etsy.

Folksy - Championing “cool crafts and design talent”, this has small number of categories covering a broad scope of crafts with some real gems although can seem very jewellery heavy. Children’s gear is not it’s strongest but they do have lovely homewares and you know I’m a sucker for cushions which they have by the plenty.

Misi - Another British pool of artisan talent with plenty of crafty folks selling their ways across a fairly broad range of categories. Like Folksy, they’re stronger on general homewares but they do have a decent sized children’s section.

Not On the High Street - Really the original UK answer to Etsy, this is still the largest gathering of independent British talent all under one roof. Broad range of ‘departments’ and the children’s section has got some great furniture and toys, plus they’re pretty hot on artwork.
