This is something not often discussed but has serious impact to all-The Google Dance

During the month, Google sends out robots (spiders) to crawl the web and archive every website it finds. These archived websites will be presented in the next update of the Google index (database). The update process is initiated every 30 days or so, although on some occasions there have been more than 30 days between updates.

From my personal experience I've seen more impact on a 90 and 180 day and yearly cycle which has impacted me the most. So during that time whatever adjustments you want to make be it content,linking or others this would be the time to do it. Right now I'm expecting it any day though you can never be absolutely sure when it'll occur;-)

Pursue something that gets you excited. Don't be discouraged if you try several different pastimes before you succeed. You'll know you've found the right hobby when you look forward to doing it, when you're happy during your hobby time, and when it leaves you feeling relaxed and positive.

4. Pick a hobby that's affordable.

Many people don't consider this aspect, but it's better to do something that doesn't run up debt, tie up a lot of your money, or make you frustrated because you later find it's out of your reach financially. A hobby doesn't have to be expensive to be fulfilling. Again, remember that the object of a hobby is not to impress people, but to do something that's fun and appealing to you.

5. Pick a hobby that is challenging.

Some collectible items are rare or hard to find. The pursuit of them is part of the excitement. Some hobbies, like painting, playing a musical instrument, or baking, have no limits. Today, instructional videos or DVDs are available that can teach you almost anything. Be realistic and don't expect to master your new interest right away. You have the rest of your life to develop your skills. Soon you'll experience a great sense of personal satisfaction as you become more and more accomplished.

Find your Niche IN Marketing

While the term "niche marketing" refers to focusing on a particular segment of the marketplace (i.e., athletes for sporting equipment, etc.), finding your niche IN marketing addesses the more personal decisions marketers are faced with in their work. The first thing any marketer learns about are the tools at their disposal. For internet marketers these tools include opt-in email lists, banners, links, article placements, forums and joint ventures. Does this mean that a marketer should use all of these tools?
In theory, yes. The ideal marketer writes one clear, sought-after article per week, has a newsletter subscription of active, opt-in readers of 5,000 or more, has at least 100 quality reciprocal links pointing to their site, participates in and contributes to several forums weekly and has at least two joint-venture deals. Plus, they regularly run classified ads, solo ads and FFA ads... they also update their site, their blog and so on and so forth, ad infinitum.

If this "ideal" sounds overwhelming that's because it is. No single human could do all that work in one week, never mind every week. Nor would they want to. What's more, successful marketers never do that much work. But many marketers, especially those new to internet marketing, in an attempt to "be all things to all people" feel compelled to try. Which is the real reason so many marketers work so hard, but fail to make the kind of sales they should.

Because in the process of doing all this work, they are actually scattering their efforts and, as a result, weakening its effects. It is better to focus on using one or two tools -- a much more realistic goal -- than to try to please everyone. Think about it. Of the two, which would YOU choose: To do five things poorly or two well.

But which tools should one choose? Ah, that's the question. Successful marketers know: They have the answer. And the answer is annoying, being at once both complex and simple: Whatever works best for the individual.

Let's face it. Not all of us are natural-born writers. While some marketers seem to churn out articles as easily as cows produce milk, others struggle with simply writing the proverbial "full and complete sentence," never mind putting together an article or, even more so, a whole article campaign. And a few would rather drink bleach mixed with hot coals than write an article.

This is not to say one must have years of writing experience in order to be successful with writing articles. If a marketer has always found writing ideas down as a good way to clarify things; if they find it easy to think of ideas; or even if they just always considered themselves a frustrated writer, then chances are, they will flourish if they focus on articles. For others articles may only prove to be a colossal waste of their time-- time that could be better spent marketing successfully.

And, essentially, that's the key.

The tool that works is the one that appeals to the marketer, the one that they find is easy, natural, and enjoy using. It doesn't even seem like work. Finding those tools, focusing on them and going back to them again and again is why the successful marketers become so. New marketers need only explore the various options and watch their own responses to know what will work for them.

But what about those that can't seem to find ANY tool that works? Are they hopeless? Not at all. One fellow marketer recently said that he didn't feel like he was marketing. All he did was visit forums and place his link in his signature file. That was his only form of advertising and he makes a good income from his site. He hadn't thought of it as marketing because it was something he did anyway-- he loved visiting forums and spent hour upon hour at them, each and every day.

But he wasn't marketing.

Instead, he organically created his own version of marketing. Best of all, he found a successful marketing tool through his individual preferences. For some people that's the answer: Finding an entirely new or little used form of marketing that works and optimizing it. Many gurus start out with just that problem. They end up 'gurus' because they found a solution.

Another important point that needs to be addressed is the "Focus Factor." The Focus Factor is two-fold:

LEARN TO WEAR BLINDERS. So many new marketers lose steam when they see an ad for, this or that "NEW Unbeatable System To Drive Traffic To Your Site..." We've all seen them. Many of us ARE them. And each marketer has followed at least one or two of these at some point early in their careers, until they realize there IS no quick, magical way of side-stepping the basic process.

REPETITION One of the best pieces of advice there is in internet marketing is, "There's Strength in Repetition". That is, if it works, do it again. And again and again and again. The classic line of advertising (and, thus, marketing, too) is, "It's all a numbers game: Create enough traffic and the sales will come." Because the audience is so much bigger, this is even truer with internet marketing. It's all about creating enough links (using whatever method you prefer) to bring enough traffic to create enough sales. And that takes many links, links everywhere. The more links (and the more permanent the links) the better.

So the most important factors to remember are:

1) Find what works and it won't feel like work. 2) Put blinders on rather than be distracted. 3) Strength In Repetition.

So whether it is article writing, creating a newsletter subscription base or some entirely new form of marketing, each marketer can succeed by finding their niche IN marketing and making the most of it.--mo

Splogs + Scraping + AdSense = Fraud

The other day, an article appeared in Search Engine Journal suggesting webmasters monetize their sites using Google AdSense. While the article neglected to mention an alternative webmaster advertising program offered by Yahoo Search Marketing, the idea of using one's website as a commercial medium (if possible or practical) makes good sense and can provide a minor side-income. Such minor side-incomes are often the first ingredients in making the gravy craved by all small business owners.

Since the advent of Google's AdWords grassroots distribution program, AdSense, several webmasters have built businesses out of taking content off of other people's websites and using that content to build pages designed specifically to attract ad-clicks.

As the average commission earned by sites running AdSense generated advertising is approximately $20/month, webmasters working this type of scheme need to create hundreds, if not thousands of pages to make a living.

In order to create those pages and attract ad-clicking visitors, content must be created, begged, borrowed, or most commonly, simply stolen. Known as Splogs, these sites only exist to game Google in one way or another, mostly for money but also for increased search rankings or as a means of manipulating search spiders.

Splogs most often get their content by scraping, the process of sending an electronic copying bot to take everything it sees, recreating it on an unlimited number of instant documents. By running advertising generated through the AdSense program, the owners of the splogs make money when visitors click on the ads. In other words, literally millions of instant sites have sprung up over the past twelve months, most of which are free-hosted Blogs, containing content scraped out from the original sites.

Before continuing, I would like to make it clear that there are several publications that request permission to reprint content. That's ok. Chances are, this article is being read in one of those publications. Online business runs on such agreements.

Splogs are bad business and the practice is finally getting the notice it deserves. Several search heavyweights have weighed in on Splogs over the past two weeks and a flame-war (the virtual equivalent of fisticuffs) broke out between members of two well-known SEO/SEM forums. As a result, the practice of producing AdSense revenues from stolen content on spammy sites got a little bit harder, starting today.

Matt Cutts, Google's spam fighter and quality assurance czar, has taken an obvious and positive interest in Splogs. In the SEO/SEM community, Cutts' name is as widely known as Page, Brin, and even Gates' names are. Cutts is "the man" when it comes to explaining the state of Google's various indexes and how they work. He is referred to as the Chief Spam Fighter at Google. In a posting to his Gagets, Google, and SEO blog earlier today, Cutts invites Google users to report Splogs displaying AdSense driven advertising.

"You see a low-quality site that is running AdSense If you run across a site that you consider spammy and it has AdSense on it, click on the "Ads by Goooooogle" link and click "Send Google your thoughts on the ads you just saw". Enter the words spamreport and jagger1 in the comments field."

The name, "Jagger1" is the reference name given the Google algorithm update that is currently causing the present shuffling of Google's search results.

Splog fraud is a big problem for Google and a growing concern for the other major search advertising providers such as Yahoo Search Marketing, and MSN. It is also a problem for others working on the Internet. The way content is taken from one site and replicated to dozens of others can cause no end to technical and financial issues for honest webmasters.

Content, incidentally, is not always limited to what the viewer sees on the screen. Stolen content often includes source-code and as anyone familiar with code can tell you, there's a lot of domain and document specific information embedded in source-code.

Over at Search Engine Journal, a funny posting shows how one poorly executed scrape made an honest webmaster afraid of being branded a click-fraud artist by Google. After scraping the site, the splog-artist apparently forgot to remove the AdSense code from the stolen content.

That's how the honest webmaster found out he had been stolen from. He was moved to contact Google before his AdSense account status was affected. If the webmaster hadn't been paying attention, he might have been badly branded by Google, burned by someone else's scam.

That's not the only way that scrappers could adversely affect honest webmasters however. The content webmasters create, or have created for them, is the attraction that prompts visitors to their sites. Attracting lots of site visitors is a pretty important step to making money from AdSense or the Yahoo Publishing Network. If someone is stealing that content, they are also stealing potential visitors. For the webmaster, that content represents investment. For the content creator, it represents product. Either way, the scraping of content is theft.

The stolen product is then used to create what is essentially duplicate content on another site. Duplication of content can have an adverse effect on the search engine placement of all documents containing the similar items.

Imagine losing your placements because someone else took the material you laboured over. Fortunately, Google's historic record of documents is fairly good at weeding through which source first displayed specific content.

Search engines have several other reasons to be concerned about splogs. As many of them are created using the free-blog software offered and hosted by most of the major search engines, the proliferation of so many splogs consumes a lot of resources.

They also gum up search results with sites not actually relevant to search engine users. Lastly, they devalue the legitimate uses of blogs as communications and marketing tools, which might lead future blog readers or users away from the growing blogosphere.

Citizen's publishing is seen as a major revenue source for both Google and Yahoo. Having invested so much time, energy and money into the establishment of blogs, the major search engines would be loath to let their investments go the way of the dodos without a fight.

Now that the web development community is talking about the issue in earnest, some forms of protections might evolve. As it stands currently, there is little a webmaster can do to protect his or her content from being stolen for profit. You can use Copyscape to see if your material has been nabbed but after doing that, there is little one can do except write angry letters to the thief and a lawyer.

Google is inviting users and webmasters to report splogs running AdSense whenever they are seen. In a just universe, not only would the AdSense accounts of those scrappers be closed, their bank accounts would be emptied after Google sues them for fraud.

15 Tips To Bring More Traffic To Your Blog

There are many factors that make blogs much better than normal WebPages including the speed at which blogs are indexed, ability to submit to blog directories & normal directories, pings and track backs. All these little things can help drive more traffic to blogs. Here are 15 popular techniques you can use:

1. Create at least four keyword posts per day. Most of the top blogs such as Boing Boing, Daily Kos, and Instapundit (with literally tens of thousands of visitors per day) publish an average of 30 small

100-150 word posts per day according to "Secrets of the A-list Bloggers: Lots of Short Posts" by TNL.net

2. Submit to My Yahoo! When you submit your own RSS to My Yahoo it is indexed by Yahoo.

3. Submit to Google's Reader. When you submit your own blog RSS to Google's Reader the Google Blog Search will index your site.

4. Add a relevant link directory to your blog and trade links like a demon possessed! Although it may take more time than simply submitting to a search engine one time, this method is perhaps the best way to drive traffic to your site. Use software such as Zeus to speed up the link trading process.

5. Use ping sites like ping-o-matic. Ping your site every time you add a new post.

6. Submit your blog to traditional search engines such as AltaVista, and MSN.

7. Submit your blog to traditional directories such as DMOZ. Directories (particularly DMOZ) increase relevance with Google. DMOZ is very picky, but what do you have to lose by trying?

8. Submit to as many RSS Directories and Search Engines as possible. This is a simple but repetitive process that can be done with software such as RSS SUBMIT.

9. Comment on other blogs. Do not just leave short, lazy comments like "I agree." Leave well thought out replies that will force readers to wonder "who wrote this?"

10. Use track backs. If there is a blog that you refer to or quote and it is highly relevant to your subject, leave a track back. It increases your link popularity and may even score a few interested readers from the linked site.

11. Go offline. Use newspaper ads, public bulletin boards, business cards, even stickers to let as many people as possible know your blog exists.

12. Add a link to your blog in your e-mail signature block.

13. Use Groups (Usenet). Find a relevant group on Google groups, Yahoo groups, MSN groups or any of the thousands of other FREE group services and find like minded people and talk with them. Make sure to use your blog URL like it is your name.

14. Use Forums. Forums are one of the best places to go for advice. Go to forums and find problems to solve. Make sure you leave your blog name, but be tactful about it; some forums get annoyed with those who selfishly drop a few links to their own site and leave.

15. Tag your website. Tagging is a new idea that has erupted across the web. Sites like Del.icio.us, Technorati and many others have a social feature that allows you to place your article under keywords or "tags" that everyone interested in that tag can see.
