Bruce Weber

2012-03-08T08:50:00.001-08:00

Bruce Weber is an American fashion photographer who works for magazines like Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Elle etc. But, has a clear link with music as well, shooting photos for albumartwork (Jackson Browne for instance), portraits for Rolling Stone magazine and even directing music videos; 'Being Boring' by the Pet Shop Boys. To me personally, one of the most beautiful music videos ever!

Jason Nocito

Every now and then a picture just grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. Somehow it seems almost all of Jason Nocito's photos have that effect on me. Although he's shooting in the big league for clients like Nike, Apple. MTV etc., his series on musicians surrounding him have a personal style which is so extremely personal, sensitive and up close, it's trully art. Please do check out his website to see them in full.

Growing up a mod in the UK Dean Chalkley developed an interest for sub / youth cultures and music, featured in his personal work. His editorial photography for NME Magazine has enabled him to build a vast portfolio of some of today's biggest stars.

Jeaneen Lund was born on Hawaii but moved to Hollywood, California as a kid, where she's now working a talented photographer for major publications as Dazed and Confused, Mojo, Wired, Teen Vogue, Vice etc. Although her work ranges from fashion to documentary, her stylish photo's of some of today's most interesting musicians are trully iconic.

California born photographer Lauren Dukoff has had a long time friendship with Devendra Banhart. Documenting his musical career got her started as a musician's photographer, but nowadays she's photographing everyone from Gaga to Adele while working for Rolling Stone, Vogue, Spin, Elle etc.

Michael Lavine grew up in 90's Seattle. His earlier photos on the local scene are collected in the book 'Grunge'. Over time though his work has become more and more commercial and he has been building a nice portfolio of musician and celebrity photos.

Annie Leibovitz

2011-05-26T09:00:00.000-07:00

What I admire most about Annie Leibovitz is that she's been able to reinvent herself over the past couple of decades. She developed herself technically and by doing so she's been not only responsible for some of the most iconic photos of the 70's / 80's, but is still a prolific photographer at the forefront of photography nowadays.

David LaChapelle

2011-05-14T20:23:00.000-07:00

I guess you either love or hate David LaChapelle's work. His highly saturated, bright, bold and extravagant imagery is almost grotesque, but you'll have to admit he's played a major part in visualising pop music over the last decade or two. I'm not crazy about his style, to me in this plastic world some of his subjects just seem to lose their personality. But what I do really admire are his big productions, having graffiti artists like Erni Vales paint entire sets for instance.

Art Kane

2011-04-28T20:35:00.000-07:00

Art Kane, born as Arthur Kanofsky, was mentored by Harper Bazaar's Alexey Brodovitch to become of the great commercial photographers of post war New York. While he's mostly remembered for one of his earliest photos, a b/w groupshot of more or less the entire NY jazz scene of the 50's, I think the more interesting shots are the lusciously colored portraits he took in the 60's.

Obviously, there are worse ways to start of your career then by doing an internship at Annie Leibovitz. So perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that Clinch meanwhile has become one of the premier popmusic photographers nowadays, while working for magazines such as Vanity Fair, Spin, Rolling Stone etc.

Anton Corbijn

2011-04-28T10:40:00.000-07:00

Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn started out working for dutch music magazine Oor. After a long career, working closely with huge acts like Depeche Mode and U2, he has reached some of that superstardom himself. Corbijn is a talented director as well, working on music videos for bands like Nirvana, Metallica, The Killers, Coldplay and many more. Lately he seems to be focusing a bit more on movies, with the release of Control (2007) and The American (2010). What I admire most in his photographic work is his ability to lift an ordinary image into something iconic.

Hedi Slimane

2011-04-28T06:11:00.000-07:00

Hedi Slimane used to be a designer for YSL en Dior, and although it won't surprise me if he'll return at the head of a big fashion house in the upcoming years, he's a very talented photographer as well. His stylish black and white photography is highly recognisable and besides shooting a lot of fashion he's also building a nice body of work photographing musicians.

Welcome to this band photography blog. On this blog I'd like to build a nice collection of photographers who shoot portraits of bands and/or musicians. I will feature both famous photographers and upcoming talent, and I don't care if the featured bands are big stadium rockstars or underground local heroes, as long as the photographs are artistically interesting.

If you have a suggestion for who should be featured on this blog or if you would like to suggest your own work, please let me know; bandphotoblog@gmail.com I'm not looking to break any copyrights here, just inspire myself and hopefully others. I will always place a link to the photographer's website if available. If you are the copyrightholder and don't like your photos featured on this blog; please let me know and I will remove them immediately.

Enjoy!
