Zerotoys: Nostalgic Time with 80s Toys

If you were born in the 80s, maybe you ever know such thing as He-Man, Voltus, Silver Hawk, Transformers or the legendary Saint Saiya and Kamen Rider. Yes, it all was the cartoons of the 80s who definitely memorable for you all. Probably not a few of you who come to collect the toys too. For those who miss the old school toys of the 80s, Zerotoys probably could be your new place to make nostalgic time with the old school toys.

For those who haven’t heard Zerotoys, you just come into the place that could be considered quite hidden. You take Veteran street, then after the red light you turn left into Sunda street, ten meters after the turn, you'll see a house on the left numbered 39A who there is no signpost, yes, therein lies Zerotoys, toy shop who concurrently with the 80’s toy museum owned by Aldo.

The story is around the year 1998-1999, Aldo and his colleagues took the initiative to open a garage sale who specializes selling toys of their collections. From there, many fans of toys who are interested in Aldo’s toys. Thus was born the Zerotoys. Yep, called Zerotoys due at the time there were no toy stores at all, then Zerotoys became the toy store, which first appeared, not with the number one who is identical to the first, but with a zero who means before the first or the very first!

Over time, more and more people who barter and deposit toys in Zerotoys for sale, but because that too, especially old school toys of the 80s began to run out and rarely to find. So Aldo took the initiative to separate the old school toys, from there so was the birth of toy museum of the 80s. Yep, the museum which is located side by side with Zerotoys is a museum which showcased all the toys of the 80s. Starting from He-Man, Star Wars, Silver Hawk, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Voltus, until the japanese candy toys who was first circulated showcased here.

Museums who begin to open the outlets around the year 2007-2008 has been collecting the old school toy of 80s approximately 1500 to 1600 pieces! And all the toy are approximately 25-30 years old. From Japan toys until American toys begin to shown here, don’t forget, several artwork, posters and other trinkets who come with toys of the 80s too showed in the museum who is located precisely on the Sunda street No. 39A.

Why should the 80s? Because the 80s was the golden age of cartoons and children's toys, for examples, circulated films in the 2000s such as Transformers and GI Joe is a remake of the product the 80s. Star Wars, Silver Hawk until action figure toys sized three inches also first appeared in the 80s says Aldo. Therefore it’s not strange if who comes to Zerotoys is average adult male who aged 30's, although not a few young people who come here also.

Bandung Style : Good Morning, Dear Sheep Competition!

As if waiting for their turn go to the battlefield, these sturdy horned creatures were patiently standing on those pickup cars that had brought them to the ground of Babakan Siliwangi (right behind the Sasana Budaya Ganesha), Bandung, on last Sunday (05/06). With their beautiful necklace, they seemed like a king who would come down to the battlefield, they went down to mound the soil where they waited for moments of shine.

Clockwise direction was aimed directly at the number 9, it's time to moved to the game area. Then, we've seen the visitors - which consists of various circles - have started packing the terrain that lies behind the running area of Sasana Culture Ganesha. In the middle of the empty land, the wood fence had been standing there, for approximately 10 square meters, equipped also by a long bench for spectators as well as stands of timber where the committee got together and negotiate.

The event - which is held regularly once a month in Babakan Siliwangi - was opened by the narrative of the master of ceremony, and accompanied by Sundanese traditional music. Then the sheep entered the fighting arena, square off and compete to each other , how strong are the power of the circular solid horns on their head. Three men wearing cowboy hat and also pangsi pants had standing there, assigned to referee fights of sheep competition, they stood in the middle of the field, and maintain the state of the sheep who are fighting. When you hear the cue "treatment" of the sound behind the sound system, the referee in the arena was immediately separated those two sheep, for just giving a massage and moved into the arena again.

Only difference, sheep competitions at Baksil is not the same as fighting sheep in general, which uses "saweran" or betting which sheep will win the game, because the goal is just for entertainment and hospitality.

As an inner turmoil that appears at once while watching these sheep fighting competition, on the one hand is, how pity if we see the sheep which is also God's creation, competed to contest the power of each, and show, whose sheep are more superior on the battlefield. But on the other hand, this event is a cultural heritage that has lasted a long time, and has become part of national identity. In addition, the personality and fighting soul had been owned by those sheeps, so it had become one of the positive points why this event continues until this very moment. It has become an instinct for the ram to demonstrate his strength, and people who facilitate it.

A Little Story about Distro & Clothing in Bandung

Before Bandung became a heaven of Factory Outlet for domestic tourists and foreign tourists, Bandung is known as a heaven for Distro and Clothing first. Well, if you observed, sometimes many don’t quite understand about those two terms which indirectly make Bandung a city that had its own standards in the world of youth fashion. Clothing itself is a term for a company producing apparel with its own brand which then can develop their products not only sell clothes only, can deliver new products supporting the lifestyle such as cool watches, belt, glasses until MP3 players. While Distro which is stands for distribution store is store that distributes products from Clothing itself, Distro could be said that the official supplier of Clothing products.

It all started with the emergence of the creative community of Bandung’s youth in mid 90s. Reverse music studio on Sukasenang Street is the embryo of the birth of Distro and Clothing today. Starting from selling accessories related to the music like tapes, CD, poster, artwork and import merchandise, Reverse who also a pioneer in Bandung indie music label began selling local goods to support the community of rock music and skateboarding in Bandung. From there then came another Distro that sells special items such as skateboard items like Hobbies and Mossy which sells T-shirts of foreign band.

When the monetary crisis hit Indonesia in 1998, Reverse who usually selling of imported goods can no longer continue its business due to the soaring price of the dollar. Thanks to that, in fact the founders of Reverse such Helvi initiative to establish his own Clothing business called Airplane. Also, along with two other veterans of Reverse, that is Dxxxt and Marin, Helvi established the record label who is now already familiar called Fast Forward Record. Yep, transformation of Reverse from Distro into Clothing Company until have a record label makes the creativity of youth in Bandung getting recognized at that time. From 347 Boardrider.co (now become 347/eat) who established in 1996 and was followed by Ouval Research in 1997 until Anonim, Flashy, Harder, No Label, Monik, Riotic and many more.

Yep, indirectly Distro and Clothing Company development in Bandung is supported by evolving youth scene at the time, starting from the music scene, for example Riotic who dominate Punk music scene in Bandung, then Bandung youth street fashion from the skater until biker, Bandung transformed into a city who continues to produce local brands, which until now has been recognized almost all over Indonesia until foreign countries. While previously many local brands which stand on its own, but believe it or not, in fact, the term of Distro or Clothing became known when brands who mentioned above appear.

The key is in terms of concept and design which are obvious. Yes, that's what distinguishes Clothing and Distro with products displayed at the Factory Outlet. No copycat from the origin design of leading brands outside, product exclusivity also is characteristic of Distro and Clothing, usually marked with a limited edition who sells only 50-100 pairs of products, That's what distinguishes Clothing and Distro among other conventional fashion industry in Bandung. Besides, the close relationship between the Clothing Company and the people who had engaged in the world of local scene like music or hobbies like skateboarding who makes the spirit of Clothing and Distro getting recognized by youth in Bandung. Not to mention a few record labels which were born from Distro made its own distinguishing features. For example Fast Forward Record who previously mentioned, then Linoleum Record who lot of sheltering metal bands and many more.

But unfortunately, Distro and Clothing developments based on the spirit of idealism youth in Bandung who wants to create a brand with a different concept from other it's been pretty covered with the presence of other Clothing who only sells for profit only. Though all of that comes from the spirit of why distributions or Clothing was established. Formerly, the people who come to the Distro that aim to find something who doesn’t exist in places such as shopping centers and department stores, something specific, different from others, therefore the location of the Distro and Clothing was sometimes not as strategic as shopping centers in general, secluded location and there was a purpose why they opened a place there, so people who came there looking for something not just window shopping only.

That is a little story about why Bandung became a heaven and a pioneer of Distro and Clothing in Bandung. In accordance with the development of the styles of the youth, Distro and Clothing will continue to grow until there are no limits. You might think that it's the photos of a place in one of the states in US or in Europe. Well, guess again. It's in West Java, Indonesia. The exact place is Pangalengan. It's really beautiful. It took about two hours by car, but not public car ^^.

You love rafting or other outdoor adventures? Well, you can visit this place and enjoy rafting like I did along with my friends and students. Or you can try flying fox if you love height and speed. Just let out your adrenaline there.

Maybe be you prefer to walk, well, you can take a walk among those tea plantation. The air is still fresh. It gets cold in the afternoon, you might want to wear sweater if you can't stand of cold like me.

Ah, not to forget you can try some fresh vegetables, such as tomatoes. Some farmers go to and from carrying their crops. Those crops surely look very tempting!

About the rafting thing, if you are not an experienced person, no need to be worry since there's some guides who will help you. And the current is not that big, if you come during draught season^^.

It was originally meant for export garment (textile) factories that open a store directly in their area so that they can sell with bargain prices. Since it was a big success, many factory outlets without the factory itself were opening in many places in the city, also with bargain price tags. To attract people, they decorated the store with many styles: the colonial style, an old chinese dynasty, etc. Some stores even have a small food court.

Earth Hour

Last Saturday, on 26th of March 2011, at 8:30PM, millions of people turned off their electronic equipment for one hour. A small action for the energy saving campaign done for our beloved mother earth.

During that 1 hour, in the midst of the darkness of the night, somehow i feel how slow time went. With no entertainment of TV, DVD, music and even my cell phone, i felt a big emptiness during that hour. Shamely, i admit that i am infact addicted to technology. And with high confidence, i am sure if i ask you guys “Who here are bored to death without their cell phones?”, many of you would raise hands.

After the hour has passed, i said to myself “Hey, this wasn’t so bad afterall!”. Adding to my excitement, i got a broadcasted news that the value in Rupiah of the energy saving done by that one hour was very significat. Amazing, isn’t it?

So, the moral of this story is that to achieve great things, it only takes a small action. Of course we all know that this campaign would not be a success if only one or two people are in this together. So my dear friends, let us take some benefit out of this. Let us start making small changes like no littering, save electricity usage and reduce plastic bag usage. After all, we owe it to our beloved earth, right?!

Trusmi Batik, The Legacy of Cirebon Culture

Last year, UNESCO recognized batik as world Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity from Indonesia. This traditional piece of cloth painted with colorful pattern is full of life philosophy. Almost every region in Java and Sumatera Island has different type of batik. Cirebon, a city in the northern coast of Java also has its own specialty.

What is Batik?

The word batik is thought to be derived from the word 'ambatik' which translated means 'a cloth with little dots'. The suffix 'tik' means little dot, drop, point or to make dots. Batik may also originate from the Javanese word 'tritik' which describes a resist process for dying where the patterns are reserved on the textiles by tying and sewing areas prior to dying, similar to tie dye techniques. Another Javanese phase for the mystical experience of making batik is “mbatik manah” which means "drawing a batik design on the heart".

In the past, Indonesians, mostly adults, wear batik only at formal events. Nowadays it has become increasingly popular even among the younger generation with batik factories starting to manufacture more wearer-friendly and fashionable batik outfits.

Many office workers now wear batik on a daily basis, while local designers compete to produce more attractive designs.

While batik originated in Javanese courts, several other regions in Indonesia also have their own styles of batik. The fabric is also widely worn in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Cloth painting in this fashion originated in the 9th century in Central Java. For centuries, only members of royal families can wear this beautifully painted cloth. However, it then became public fashion and spread all over Java and Sumatra Island.

Batik patterns are divided into two big groups, the royal and coastal motifs. The royal motifs are dominated with brown, dark brown, black, brownish red, yellowish brown or white color and the painting must adhere to some approved philosophical pattern that had not changed for centuries. This kind of batik usually wore on formal occasion or by royal families. The second group, the coastal motifs are more colorful with playful natural pictures.

Cirebon’s Batik

Local batik production in Cirebon is centralized in Trusmi, a village 5kms from the city centre. Around 1000 batik artist work in or around the village. Trusmi Batik is mostly coastal styled, although some royal motifs are also available as there are 4 kingdoms in Cirebon that still exist to date. One of the most famous royal motifs is the “Singa Wadas” that describe a worshipped royal lion (singa means lion in local language).

Like any other coastal batik, the motif of Trusmi batik is heavily influenced by sari, India’s traditional cloth brought by trader and also by some pattern introduced by the Dutch during the colonial era and the Chinese. Chinese influence are shown by the appearance of pictures of dragons, and some creature from Chinese mythology such as phoenix and qilin, a quardian lion.

Forget History of Bandung City Government, made Struggle Mall Hotels

A number of Members LVRI Looks Sad Because Bandung City Government changed the Building Parking Area Historical So for a Mall. Bandung City Government started to forget history.

This was the case in which the members Legium Veteran Republik Indonesia (LVRI), Bandung, Monday (20 / 9) went to the former hotel building Graha Harapan Eka Kepatihan located on No. 14, Bandung.

They all admitted admitted concern over the attitude the Government of Municipalities (local government), which amended the building which had become a place declaration Bandung Lautan Api (BLA) is a parking area to a mall.

You also can find Distro (distribution outlets). Distro is an interesting place to shop in Bandung because they produce their own fashion design which is very unique and cannot be found in other shopping place. There are also several factory outlet shops around Bandung. The shops are mainly found along the streets of Juanda (known as Dago area), Cipaganti area, Martadinata Street (known as Riau) and Cihampelas street. Bandung Shopping is one of the primary attractions for Indonesians visiting Bandung. The other reason is culinary food.

Cihampelas Bandung

Cihampelas or popular called as The Street of 1001 Jeans is best known for jeans. You can find denim (jeans) stores along the street. Here you can buy literally any type as well as any size of jeans, in addition to a very large selection of casual wear, all at very reasonable prices. The jeans here are mostly copies. The shops here boast huge fantastical statues of comic book or movie characters on their roofs and shop fronts such as Superman, Goku, Rambo and others.

Cibaduyut Bandung:

If you have sometime to explore shopping in Bandung, you can try to go to Cibaduyut. Cibaduyut is the center of shoe sellers. The statue of two bronze shoes at the beginning of the street conveys it all: shoes of all sorts and sizes make up the bulk of what this street sells. If you are keen on shoes and like a bargain, Cibaduyut street will both satisfy your feet as your wallet. To get there, either take a taxi or hop on one of the angkots that states Cibaduyut, and get off past the shoe statue. Most of the branded shoes might not be the real thing even though, many still are of good quality and it is hard to tell if it concerns the real thing or not. Other than that most shoes are Indonesian brands, again of good enough quality and economically priced.

* Factory outlets: Mostly Factory outlets are concentrated along the streets ofJuanda (Dago), Cipaganti, and Martadinata (Riau). You can just walk along the streets. Such as The Summit Factory Outlet and Herittage Factory Outlet which are located at Martadinata (Riau) Street. Just ask away how to get there.

* Distros (Distribution Outlets) are a new phenomenon in Bandung where a shop sells stylish products that were made by local designers. They are served as a distribution store, because these local designers do not have their own marketing label yet. One thing that makes distros stand out from factory outlet is that distros come from individual designers and young entrepeneurs, while factory outlet products come from a garment factory.

History of Bandung

The city history dates from 1488 when the first reference to Bandung exists. But from ancient archeological finds, we know the city was home to Australopithecus, Java Man. These people lived on the banks of the Cikapundung in north Bandung, and on the shores of the Great Lake of Bandung. Flint artifacts can still be found in the Upper Dago area and the Geological Museum has displays and fragments of skeletal remains and artifacts.
The Sundanese were a pastoral people farming the fertile regions of Bandung. They developed a lively oral tradition which includes the still practiced Wayang Golekpuppet theatre, and many musical forms. "There is a city called Bandung, comprising 25 to 30 houses," wrote Juliaen de Silva in 1614.
The achievements of European adventurers to try their luck in the fertile and prosperous Bandung area, led eventually to 1786 when a road was built connecting Jakarta, Bogor, Cianjur and Bandung. This flow was increased when in 1809 Louis Napoleon, the ruler of the Netherlands, ordered Governor General H.W. Daendels, to increase defences in Java against English. The vision was a chain of military defense units and a supply road between Batavia and Cirebon. But this coastal area was marsh and swamp, and it was easier to construct the road further south, across the Priangan highlands.
The Grote Postweg (Great Post Road) was built 11 miles north of the then capital of Bandung. With his usual terseness, Daendels ordered the capital to be relocated to the road. Bupati Wiranatakusumah II chose a site south of the road on the western bank of the Cikapundung, near a pair of holy wells, Sumur Bandung, supposedly protected by the ancient goddess Nyi Kentring Manik. On this site he built hisdalem (palace) and the alun-alun (city square). Following traditional orientations,Mesjid Agung (The Grand Mosque) was placed on the western side, and the public market on the east. His residence and Pendopo (meeting place) was on the south facing the mystical mountain of Tangkuban Perahu. Thus was The Flower Cityborn.
Around the middle of the l9th Century, South American cinchona (quinine), Assam tea, and coffee was introduced to the highlands. By the end of the century Priangan was registered as the most prosperous plantation area of the province. In 1880 the rail line connecting Jakarta and Bandung was completed, and promised a 2 1/2 hour trip from the blistering capital in Jakarta to Bandung.
With this life changed in Bandung, hotels, cafes, shops sprouted up to serve the planters who either came down from their highland plantations or up from the capital to frolic in Bandung. The Concordia Society was formed and with its large ballroom was the social magnet for weekend activities in the city. The Preanger Hotel and the Savoy Homann were the hotels of choice. The Braga became the promenade, lined with exclusive Europeans shops.
With the railroad, light industry flourished. Once raw plantation crops were sent directly to Jakarta for shipment to Europe, now primary processing could be done efficiently in Bandung. The Chinese who had never lived in Bandung in any number came to help run the facilities and vendor machines and services to the new industries. Chinatown dates from this period.
In the first years of the present century, Pax Neerlandica was proclaimed, resulting in the passing of military government to a civilian one. With this came the policy of decentralization to lighten the administrative burden of the central government. And so Bandung became a municipality in 1906.
This turn of events left a great impact on the city. City Hall was built at the north end of Braga to accommodate the new government, separate from the original native system. This was soon followed by a larger scale development when the military headquarters was moved from Batavia to Bandung around 1920. The chosen site was east of City Hall, and consisted of a residence for the Commander in Chief, offices, barracks and military housing.
By the early 20's the need for skilled professionals drove the establishment of the technical high school that was sponsored by the citizens of Bandung. At the same time the plan to move the capital of the Netherlands Indies from Batavia to Bandung was already mature, the city was to be extended to the north. The capital district was placed in the northeast, an area that had formerly been rice fields, and a grand avenue was planned to run for about 2.5 kilometers facing the fabledTangkuban Perahu volcano with Gedung Sate at the south end, and a colossal monument at the other. on both sides of this grand boulevard buildings would house the various offices of the massive colonial government.
Along the east bank of the Cikapundung River amidst natural scenery was the campus of the Technische Hoogeschool, dormitories and staff housing. The old campus buildings and its original landscaping reflect the genius of its architectHenri Maclain Pont. The southwestern section was reserved for the municipal hospital and the Pasteur Institute, in the neighborhood of the old quinine factory. These developments were carefully planned down to the architectural and maintenance details. These years shortly before World War II were the golden ones in Bandung and those alluded to today as Bandung Tempoe Doeloe.
The war years did little to change the city of Bandung, but in 1946, facing the return of the Colonial Dutch to Indonesia, citizens chose to burn down their beloved Bandung in what has become known as Bandung Lautan Api, Bandung Ocean of Fire. Citizens fled to the southern hills and overlooking the "ocean of flames" penned "Halo Halo Bandung," the anthem promising their return. Political unrest colored the early years of Independence and consequently people flocked to Bandung where safety was. The population skyrocketed from 230,000 in 1940 to 1 million by 1961. Economic prosperity following the oil boom in the 70's pushed this further so that by 1990 there were 2 million inhabitants.
Present day Bandung is thriving. As home to more than 35 schools of higher education, there is a vibrant collegiate atmosphere. The excellent fine arts offerings have produced an artist colony of great repute and excitement. The textile industry is the largest in the country and contributes to a vigorous business climate.
In 1987 the city extended its administrative boundaries toward a Greater Bandung Plan (Bandung Raya) Plans for the city include higher concentrations of development outside the current city centre, in an attempt to dilute some of the population density in the old core. These days Bandung Raya is still years ahead, yet the land has suffered deeply. Commercial activities run amok, God only knows who can take control. The city core is practically uprooted, old faces are torn down, lot sizes regrouped, and what was idyllic residence is now bustling chain supermarkets and rich banks.
