It’s even cool to prop your eyewear on the visor of your hat when they are not in use.

New products have recently been introduced that have been gaining in popularity. Namely, wire fielder’s masks. These masks provide less obstruction of one’s vision by reducing the size of the bars in front of a player’s eyes. Yet their increased weight and uncomfortable placement of their permanently attached chin cups have made them unpopular with some players.

As the use of eye protection on baseball and softball diamonds has increased over the past few seasons we find new products are becoming more accepted by players. These products incorporate wire bars similar to what the Bangerz HS6500 has always used.

These new full-face wire fielder’s masks still suffer from some of the fit issues, especially in the chin and mouth area that we have discussed in previous blogs.

Therefore, players that are most interested in protecting their orbital area, and especially their eyes, without having to deal with the uncomfortable fit problems associated with full face masks have found the Bangerz HS6500 as the solution and their fielder’s mask of choice.

During the 2011 NCAA College Softball World Series, freshman pitcher/first baseman Kaitlin Inglesby wore an HS6500 mask and led the University of Washington Huskies into the Super Regional Round of the NCAA Div. 1 Softball Championships with her arm and bat. Kaitlin was named the Tournament MVP of the Seattle Regional. Inglesby pitched all 21 innings of the tournament. Her three-day totals - .900 on-base percentage and four RBI’s, 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.

We also heard from Joe and Tracey Lia who wanted to let us know that their daughter Gianna Lia uses the Bangerz HS6500 Fielders Mask and loves it. Gianna played in the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, OR and wore the mask while both pitching and playing 3rd base. Gianna’s parents appreciate the fact that the mask offers her protection of her face while playing and it has saved her from injury on a few occasions, as well as giving them some peace of mind.

So no matter your age or level of play; whether you’re a top-flight college softball student/athlete like Kaitlin Inglesby, a youth softball star like Gianna Lia, or just someone that loves to play the game; whether you lead your team into the NCAA College Softball World Series, the Little League Softball World Series or your local youth league or high school team; you’ll gain protection and confidence by wearing the Bangerz HS6500 Wire Fielder’s Mask.

PROTECT YOUR EYES - WEAR BANGERZ!

One of the most asked questions we receive at Bangerz is “What can I wear for Martial Arts?”

The answer is always the HS3000CP.

The Bangerz HS3000CP is a Curved Shield design that provides maximum peripheral and downward vision. Its shock absorbing brow bridge and padded nosepiece protector makes it the ultimate eye protector for Martial Arts.

The HS3000CP is made of high impact, one piece shatter-proof polycarbonate. Its lens is coated for anti-fog and anti-scratch resistance. It has fully removable side pads that allow for a custom fit. The head strap is adjustable and washable. A protective storage pouch that doubles as a micro fiber cleaning cloth is included.

And speaking of “Ball” sports, the HS3000CP meets or exceeds all USRA (United States Racquetball Assoc.) and ASTM F803-03 standards for racquet sports. It also meets ASTM F803-03 standards, US Lacrosse and PECC certified lab requirements for women’s adult and youth lacrosse. And let’s not forget the new NFHS ruling for Field Hockey. The HS3000CP meets the ASTM F2713-09 standard for field hockey as well.

The HS3000CP is versatile, all-around eye protection whether you play your sport with a “Ball” or not.

It is a trend in the athletic world where new clothing and footwear are being manufactured with super-lightweight fabrics and materials. Minimalist running shoes are on the shelves at all major athletic outlets.

Bangerz is introducing new minimalist-inspired eye protection. The new HS1000 Goggle embodies the simplistic design and basic fundamentals found in our HS2000. Its wraparound, bubble-shape design provides full frontal protection and extra wide peripheral vision.

The HS1000CP is made of lightweight, high impact, one piece shatter-proof polycarbonate. It has vented sides that allow for greater air flow and the largest viewing area of any of our eye protection. The lens are coated for fog and scratch resistance. It has a hypo-allergenic, soft molded rubber nose piece for greater comfort and impact protection. The goggle is held in place by an adjustable and washable headstrap. A micro-fiber lens cleaning/protective storage pouch is included.

The new HS1000 is designed to fit children and has an exclusive triple fit – just remove and rotate the side pads. These exclusive, adjustable side pads allow for a custom fit.

The HS1000CP is a simple, lightweight goggle that meets or exceeds all USRA and ASTM F803 standards for racquet sports and youth lacrosse.

It seems as those Bangerz polycarbonate lens goggles have been the choice of most players and coaches due to the better downward and peripheral vision players receive as compared to wire goggles. Plus, the US Field Hockey press release recommending Bangerz polycarbonate goggles and prohibiting wire goggles has fueled the interest in our products.

Now that the season has started we are getting many phone calls and e-mails about the goggles. It seems as though many players have not practiced or played with their eyewear on over the summer and figured them out as they would with a new stick or other new piece of equipment.

Generally what happens when the goggles are first put on, an athlete starts running around and warms up, fogging will occur between the cooler goggle and heat being produced by the athlete similar to the windshield of your car or other glass surface when it is introduced to a temperature change. The high humidity we are experiencing, with all of the rain we have had recently, exacerbates this situation. But as the temperature of the goggle reaches the temperature of the athlete the fogging will diminish and everything will be OK.

We have had this discussion with many coaches and players, because one of the biggest reasons people won't try polycarbonate goggles is because they say they fog. Yet when we ask teams that wear polycarbonate goggles on a regular basis if fogging is a problem, they always reply that it is not and often add the comment "they fog a little bit when you first put them on, but then they are OK...." We have Yale University lacrosse players wearing them on frigid spring days with snow piled up around the field and fogging has not been a problem for them. Teams in New York and the New England states, who have been playing with a field hockey eyewear mandate for over 5 years, have been wearing the entire line of Bangerz goggles with success.

To help limit fogging Bangerz recommends applying a dab of liquid dish detergent or soap to the inner and outer surface of the goggle lens and wiping it clean with a soft cloth. We have an Anti Fog spray, item #HSAF that is a mild soapy solution that also works.

We met with a local HS team last week that has been a perennial Pennsylvania state championship contender that had concerns about fogging. They e-mailed us on Tuesday and by Thursday night's meeting were already getting used to their goggles. They had purchased liquid Johnson’s Baby Soap and were applying it and were having success limiting the fogging.

A few players also commented on the excess sweat that was building up around their eyes and how they started wearing a headband or cloth hair band over their forehead and around their brow to absorb the sweat.

The bottom line is, while there was a sense of panic on Monday, especially in the humid states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as players learned about and got used to wearing their goggles, by Friday most of the problems and concerns had gone away.

Since the April 15th NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) announcement mandating eye protection for all high school Field Hockey players, and, the April 22nd announcement by USA Field Hockey that confirmed their position that players who want to wear eye protection at official USA Field Hockey sanctioned events cannot wear cage type (wire) eye protection - the Bangerz line of ASTM F2713-09 approved for Field Hockey goggles has been the most popular choice of coaches, athletic directors and players throughout the country.

Bangerz Sports Eye Protection manufactures the largest number of F2713-09 approved eyewear. These models include the HS3000 Curved Shield Goggle, HS5500 Sleek Shield Goggle, HS7900 Flow-Through Sunglass style Goggle, and the HS6000 Youth Goggle. This lineup includes polycarbonate shield or optically correct lens that are treated for scratch and fog resistance. They provide the best downward vision of any line of goggles available, the most important feature to field hockey players. In addition the Bangerz HS-OTG Over-the-Glasses polycarbonate goggle provides eye protection for those players that wear glasses.

I received a panicked phone call from a friend last week, his daughter was pitching in a tournament over the weekend and the tournament rules state that all pitchers, third and first basemen must wear protective fielders’ safety masks. He said he had searched all of the local stores and couldn’t find anything his daughter would wear. I had her try on a Bangerz HS1800 and the difference to her was clear.

While the Bangerz HS1800 Sports Safety Mask is similar in shape to many of the masks on the market as it provides protection for the eyes, nose, cheek and dental area. The similarity stops there as the HS1800 has innovative features that are not found in other masks.

She had complained that she tried other youth and adult masks but couldn’t find one that fit properly.

Solution - The Bangerz HS1800 is the only adjustable mask on the market. Its high impact two piece design has a vertical and horizontal adjustable lower strike bar designed to provide a custom, secure fit for most head sizes. The head straps are fully adjustable and provide each individual a secure fit.

She tried one of the recently popular wire masks and found it was too heavy.

Solution - The Bangerz HS1800 is ultra lightweight, shatterproof and engineered to provide full facial protection when playing baseball, softball and other sports.

When she put on a lighter plastic mask from another manufacturer the stationary chin cup that is permanently attached to the mask didn’t sit on her chin properly. It covered her mouth and made it hard to breath.

Solution - The Bangerz HS1800 has a fully flexible, free swinging chin cup that is attached by two elastic straps, it properly sits below a player’s chin like a chin strap should. It’s design is engineered to provide the most comfortable fitting mask available.

My friend’s daughter was pleased with the Bangerz HS1800. She also informed us that the younger girls that play in their local town league are also required to wear eye protection at every infield position.

A few weeks ago we informed you that the NFHS (National Federation of High School Associations) had mandated eye protection for field hockey for the upcoming season.

What’s going to happen with Girls Fastpitch softball? Will eye protection be mandated soon?

Drop us a line and let us know what is going on in your local league.

And remember, Protect your Eyes - Wear Bangerz!

Bangerz has been addressing the issue of fielder’s protection for many years. The HS1800 Sports Safety Mask has been available since 2009. It is considered by many as one of the most innovative new products in baseball and softball fielders protection. Its lightweight, two-piece adjustable design provides a custom fit for different sized players. The free floating chin cup locks the facemask in place and provides a player with an extremely comfortable fit as well.

The new Pitching Helmet was designed in reaction to a much publicized accident that occurred when a 17 year old high school pitcher suffered life-threatening injuries last March when he was hit in the head by a batted-ball while pitching.

While this new product is a welcome addition to the list of fielders protection currently available, it is lacking in one regard as it does not protect a player’s face. The pitching helmet fits over a player’s cap and only addresses impact to the crown of the head. It does not protect the eyes, nose, jaw or dental area.

Recently fielder’s masks have been targeted as girls fastpitch softball products. Bangerz has recommended that baseball players also can benefit from wearing fielder’s protection. We have introduced you to Dillon Yeaman as an example of how baseball players can get back on the field and play with confidence using Bangerz fielders’ masks. Dillon wears the HS6500 Wire Fielder’s mask to product his eyes, nose and forehead area.

Now it seems as though the rest of the market is catching up and realizing that both softball and baseball players need fielder’s protection. Batted balls reach the pitcher’s mound in less than half a second. While only one player, Ray Chapman in 1920, has ever died from being hit in the head in the major leagues by a baseball, there are numerous documented cases of pitchers suffering brain injuries, even deaths, in minor league baseball, colleges or little leagues.

Just last year the major leagues had its share of scary moments.

April 2010: Houston's Lance Berkman lines a pitch off the head of the Pirates' Chris Jakubauskas.

May, 2010: Cleveland pitcher David Huff is hit in the head by an Alex Rodriquez' line drive.

July 2010: Texas pitcher Dustin Nippert is hit on the right side of the face by a line drive off the bat of Tigers' Austin Jackson.

Sept. 2010: Cardinals pitcher Blake Hawksworth is hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Cubs' Sam Fuld.

In recent years the debate over catastrophic brain injuries has been centered around football. Recent incidents involving ice hockey players have added their sport to the debate. Now it has shifted toward baseball, where balls struck off of aluminum bats can reach speeds approaching 100 mph.

According to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), other young people have suffered even more serious baseball injuries. In fact, the CPSC quoted statistics for one year during which 21 children died due to their baseball head injuries.

The message is clear, whatever your sport “Protect yourself, especially your eyes”

Wear Bangerz!

“Protect your Eyes” with Bangerz Sports Eye Protection

Last year we heard from Al Martino who’s son Anthony’s eyes were protected from serious injury on the baseball field because he was wearing the Bangerz HS-7900 Sunglass style Sports Eye Protection.

Mr. Martino followed up with information about Anthony’s teammates who also escaped injury due to their Bangerz baseball-softball eyewear.

Now that the 2011 Baseball/Softball season has started we got another note from the Martino’s. Luckily they have had no more eye injury close-calls. But when Al’s daughter let him know that she wanted to pitch for her softball team the thing most prevalent in his mind was finding the right fielders mask to protect her.

Mr. Martino once again turned to Bangerz and found the HS-1800 Sports Safety Mask. He wrote us -

Just ordered the HS-1800 product for my 10 year old daughter who is playing softball this year.

I am finding that pitching softball may pose greater risks than baseball.

Of course she want to pitch, but not without the protection of the HS-1800.

Looks like another good product from Bangerz.

The Bangerz HS1800 is the only adjustable mask on the market. Its high impact two piece design has a vertical and horizontal adjustable lower strike bar designed to provide a custom, secure fit for most head sizes. The head straps are fully adjustable and provide each individual a secure fit.

The Bangerz HS1800 is ultra lightweight, shatterproof and engineered to provide full facial protection when playing baseball, softball and other sports.

The Bangerz HS1800 has a fully flexible, free swinging chin cup that is attached by two elastic straps, it properly sits below a player’s chin like a chin strap should, it’s design is engineered to provide the most comfortable fitting mask available.

The Bangerz HS1800 is the best looking mask available. It has aggressive styling and comes in three color combinations - Clear with Black trim, Silver with Blue trim and Black with Black trim.

Remember to always “Protect your Eyes” with Bangerz Sports Eye Protection.

College Lacrosse Begins

Colleges have hit the lacrosse fields and games between the nation’s top teams have already started.

We checked in with Head Coach Anne Phillips of the Yale University Bulldogs Women’s Lacrosse team a few weeks ago. Coach Phillips’ team will be, in her words “rocking their Bangerz” HS5500 Sleek Shield polycarbonate goggles again this season as they negotiate their difficult Ivy League schedule against some of the nation’s top women’s teams including NCAA preseason ranked #7 University of Pennsylvania and #14 Dartmouth. Their schedule also includes #8 James Madison and #6 Georgetown. We wish Yale and Coach Phillips a successful and injury-free season!

In NCAA Division III, the Franklin and Marshall College Women’s Lacrosse team came in at #3 in the preseason poll of IWLCA coaches. They will be starting defense of their Centennial Conference Championship and will continue wearing the Bangerz HS7900 Force Flex Flow-Through polycarbonate goggles. Good luck to the Diplomats!

High School teams will also be starting practice this week as March 7th marks the beginning of Spring Sports in many of the northeastern states where the largest number of boys and girls lacrosse teams reside. Bangerz HS7200 Wire Goggles and HS7200LT Lite Wire Goggles will be worn by many teams.

You can check out the entire line of Bangerz women’s lacrosse eyewear at www.bangerz.com.

Once you chose the goggle that’s right for you look to purchase Bangerz at top sporting goods retailers like Dunhams Sports, Lacrosse Specialty shops like Longstreth Women’s Sports Specialists and Sports Her Way or on-line lacrosse specialists like www.sportsunlimitedinc.com and www.monkeysports.com .

Remember to always “Protect your Eyes” with Bangerz Sports Eye Protection.

“Protect your Eyes” wear Bangerz Sports Eye Protection.

Springtime is right around the corner in the Northern States. Major League Baseball players have started Spring Training. College teams are planning their Spring Break trips to warmer climates. While teams in the Southeast and Southwest have already hit the field, there is still a lot of practice time to be completed before the games start.

Bangerz Sports Eye Protection is preparing for a busy baseball and softball season as well.

Last year we introduced you to Dillon Yeaman and Monica Harrison who both have overcome injuries and continued playing at a high level with the help of the Bnagerz HS6500 Wire Fielder’s Mask. We also were contacted by Al Martino and Allen Moore who told us great stories about their son’s and daughter’s positive experience wearing Bangerz Sports Eye Protection.

These unsolicited recommendations of Bangerz Sports Eye Protection strengthens our belief that all players can benefit from wearing our line of good looking and protective eyewear while playing baseball and softball.

So check out this year’s lineup of Bangerz Sports Eye Protection and enhance your enjoyment of the game while looking good and protecting your eyes.

Then send us a note about your experience on the field and tell us about your favorite pair of Bangerz.

Lacrosse participation has been growing steadily year after year. Once a sport only played in New England and certain areas of the Northeast, lacrosse is now played nationwide.

Back in 2003 US Lacrosse mandated eye protection for girls lacrosse players. Years before eye protection was mandated nationwide, Bangerz added womens lacrosse eye protection to its product line. and had provided teams in the New England states and New York, where goggle use was already mandated, both wire and polycarbonate lensed products.

Each year in late January the lacrosse community comes together at the US Lacrosse Convention. In addition to the coaches clinics, meetings and discussions that are scheduled during the convention, there is also an exhibit area set up with manufacturers display the latest in lacrosse equipment and technology.

The college conference championships were just played and NCAA Div. I-AA, II and III teams are in their playoffs. High School teams are holding their state championships and the NFL season is nearing an end as teams make their final push to the conference playoffs and the Super Bowl.

The days are cold and the weather is getting nasty with strong winds, rain and snow and the elements are making it hard for players to properly see what they are doing.

More and more players are wearing polycarbonate football eyeshields in their helmets. They have learned that eyeshields reduce the potential for eye injury from finger pokes and foreign objects entering through their facemasks.

Bangerz has been at the forefront of football helmet eyeshield technology since they became more popular a few years ago. Bangerz football eyeshields are wore by players at all levels of play; youth, high school, college and in the NFL.

Bangerz offers two different styles of football helmet eyeshields. The HS9000 ProVu Flexible Eyeshield is available in clear or smoke tint and easily attaches to most helmets with the use of zip-ties that wrap around the facemask bars. The HS9900 ProVu Maxx Molded Eyeshield is available in clear, smoke and a new anti-glare finish. This molded style comes with two sets of attachment devices that work with both thin and thick wire helmet facemasks. It fits helmets made by all manufacturers; Riddell, Schutt, Adams and Xenith.

Bangerz has a football helmet eyeshield that meets everyone’s criteria, be it price, quality, tint or glare reduction.

All Bangerz clear and anti-glare football eyeshield meet NFHS requirements for light transmission and the ability to see a player’s eyes. They help control light intensity. They shield a players’ eyes from dirt, mud, airborne particles and finger pokes. Bangerz football eyeshields provide 100% UV protection, have an anti-scratch and anti-fog coating and are easy to install. They increase your confidence on the field and improve your game concentration.

The New BANGERZ HS9900AG Anti Glare ProVU Eyeshields also eliminates the glare problem of other eyeshields.

Look for the complete line of Bangerz ProVU Football Eyeshields at your local sporting goods retailer.

Remember “the best players on the best teams in the country wear Bangerz”.

Rhiannon Moore.

Earlier this year we introduced you to Dillon Yeaman. Dillon has been wearing the Bangerz HS6500 Wire Fielders Mask since a line drive struck him in the face in 2008. The unfortunate accident did not deter him from playing the game he loves and to this day Dillon excels on the baseball field as a pitcher, outfielder and hitter while wearing his mask.

In June we showed you Monica Harrison, shortstop of the UCLA women’s fastpitch softball team win the NCAA Division I National Championship while wearing the Bangerz HS6500 Wire Fielders Mask. The Bangerz HS6500 provided Monica with the protection she required and allowed her to continue to perform at her best.

Today we would like you to meet Rhiannon Moore. Her father, Allen, sent us a note recently about Rhiannon who also wears the Bangerz HS6500 Wire Fielder’s Mask.

Allen wrote -

“My daughter uses your HS6500 series mask for fastpitch softball here in Colorado. This will be her 4th season using it and still to this day LOVES it. She is a pitcher and has tried all of the masks out there and just won't use anything else but her "beak". I love it, she loves it, and we have got SO MANY people she has been on teams with to order it from you. I have put one of her masks on my kick boxing dummy and thrown softballs at it from a pitching machine, and it’s taken it. We are completely sold on Bangerz and aren't switching for anything.”

“We believe in it and just want everyone we play with to feel the same way about it. Our daughter is such a standout player that she gets noticed a lot and referred to as "the girl with that cage facemask". Parents and players seem to put a great player and the equipment she has together in ability to play and start asking questions about it.”

Allen, thanks for your comments and your testing!

We agree with you 100%. Parents, coaches and players put great players and their equipment together in their ability to play and perform at a high level.

That is why we have been telling you all along -

Bangerz Sports Eye Protection is worn by the best players on the best teams in the country.

Many of those injuries are sports-related. Every 13 minutes an emergency room in the United States treats a sports-related eye injury, many of them children.

Eye injuries can include painful corneal abrasions, blunt trauma and penetrating injuries, inflamed iris, fracture of the eye socket, and swollen or detached retinas. Injuries can range from temporary to permanent vision loss.

Fortunately, 90 percent of all eye injuries can be prevented through proper eye protection.

With every change of season, sports eye protection should be considered as important as the purchase of new uniforms and equipment. There is a variety of styles that are easy to wear and do not impede performance. Parents should get their children in the habit early on to make eye protection part of their game.

All eye protection lenses should be made of polycarbonate and meet or exceed the standards of the ASTM F803 for the specific sport. Polycarbonate eyewear is 10 times more impact resistant than other plastics, according to the National Eye Institute.

Some eyeguards are available with anti-fog coating. Others have side vents for additional ventilation. Have your child try on different types to determine which is most comfortable.

Make sure the sports eye protection your child selects has been tested for sports use.

Sports eyeguards should be padded or cushioned along the brow and bridge of the nose. Padding will prevent the eyeguards from cutting your child's skin.

Have your child try on the eye protector to determine if it's the right size.

Sports eye protection can be purchased at sports specialty stores. At the sports store, ask for a sales representative who's familiar with eye protectors and demand the Bangerz brand of Sports Eye Protection.

Basketball

We are in the middle of the Fall Sports season; football , soccer, cross-country, field hockey and volleyball teams are finalizing their league play and tuning up for the playoffs. Major League Baseball is reaching their league championship playoffs and if the World Series goes more than 4 games as it is most likely to, we may get to anoint a “Mr. November” since games 5, 6 and 7 will be played on November 1st, 3rd and 4th.

In the middle of all of this activity this Friday is October 15th - the official start of the NCAA basketball season, Midnight Madness practices are scheduled throughout the country as teams begin their quest to be hopefully be playing during the spring “Madness” in March we all have come to know and love.

So this reminds us that of all of the sports we play Basketball is the most dangerous for our eyes.

Basketball is considered a “High Risk” sport by the Coalition to Prevent Sports Eye Injures. In their report “What Sports Do You Play” we find -

“ Basketball represents the greatest risk for eye injury when compared to all other sports and has been shown to be the leading cause of sports eye injuries requiring emergency room treatment (22.2%). One in ten college basketball players will suffer an eye injury each season. It is estimated that 2800 basketball players are legally blinded each year due to sports eye injuries. Less serious basketball eye injuries are typically minor abrasions, lacerations, contusions, corneal abrasions and traumatic iritis caused by opponents fingers or elbows striking the players eye, frequently during aggressive play under the boards. “

And we all know that aggressive play has been a hallmark of successful teams so coaches continue to stress “in your face” defense and overly aggressive rebounding skills.

When you realize that of all the team sports we play Basketball has the largest number of teams and players with over 26 million, reported in the recent SGMA Sports Participation Report. That’s a lot of potential eye injuries.

It has also been found that players that have had LASIK or incisional refractive surgery are at a greater risk of eye injury as their incisions are a potential location of rupture upon impact.

The recommended preventative measure is ASTM F803 protective eyewear certified for basketball. They are tested for the sport’s specific injuries (including a finger poke test) and should be worn by all players.

Bangerz Sports Eye Protection has a complete line of eye protection that is popular with basketball players. In the 1990’s Horace Grant of the Orlando Magic wore Rec-Specs made by Bangerz’ parent company Halo Sports and Safety. The HS-2000 model is the “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar” style. Its wrap-around design provides full frontal protection and superior peripheral vision. The HS-3000 and HS-5500 are also popular basketball eye protection. And for those noses that have been punched, hit and elbowed the HS-1500 Nose Guard will protect you.

So why risk a debilitating eye injury while on the court this season. Before practice starts this Friday pick up a pair of Bangerz!

Safety Issues

In the past few weeks more attention has been placed on the dilemma facing sport governing bodies as they relate to the safety issues in their respective games.

On August 28th the NFHS (National Federation of High School Associations) revised their rules that pertain to baseball bats and placed a “moratorium” on composite bats similar to what the NCAA did for the 2010 season. Composite bats are often blamed for producing hits with excessive “exit” speeds that many feel are dangerous to fielders.

In addition to the NFHS rule changes, at a recent NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) board meeting the topic of Baseball/Softball Pitcher's Fielder's Helmets was discussed.

During the meeting, the NCAA and the NFHS suggested that their baseball and softball rules committees strongly consider a requirement for pitchers and fielders to wear helmets during play in the field. Both organizations requested NOCSAE start development of a standard for such a product. Since the board meeting, NOCSAE has been contacted by USA Baseball which indicated it is considering the same requirement for USA Baseball-sanctioned play. Based on this request, NOCSAE has started efforts involving protective headgear for the pitcher, which may apply to infielders for baseball and softball.

In addition to the scrutiny of the baseball/softball rules in relation to fielder’s safety; safety of women’s lacrosse players is also being discussed.

On Tuesday, August 10, ESPN aired its weekly sports news magazine television show E:60. The show contained a segment produced by Tom Farrey that featured two injured girls' high school players from Pittsburgh (Pa.) and suggested that hard helmets should be incorporated into the women’s game.

US Lacrosse, the nonprofit national governing body for men and women’s lacrosse in the United States, writes the rules for the girls and youth game and provides best-practice leadership in the area of lacrosse-specific injury research that provides invaluable perspective in the rule making process responded to the report in a statement posted on their website www.uslacrosse.org.

To summarize, US Lacrosse shared the concern over the safety of women’s players, feels the explosive growth of lacrosse throughout the country will lead to the need for more coaches who have received proper training provided by US Lacrosse and continued investigation into the games safety.

But they also contend that Women’s Lacrosse is not played with additional protective equipment for four guiding principles that form the foundation of women’s lacrosse:

“Honor the origins of the game, Commitment to the core values, Maintain relevance of the game today and in the future, Respect all participants.

Respecting these guiding principles, the game today continues to be one of finesse and speed, using minimum equipment and prohibiting intentional body contact. Since 1931, the rules for women’s lacrosse as written by the United States Women’s Lacrosse Association (1931-1998) and US Lacrosse (1999- present) have evolved to maintain the spirit of the game and to ensure the safety of the players at all levels.”

They go on to state - “While protective eye wear has been mandatory since 2003, soft protective headgear has long been allowed within the equipment requirements for women’s lacrosse. Any player may wear soft headgear to enhance the safety of their playing experience. Additionally, US Lacrosse is investigating the development of women's lacrosse-specific manufacturing standards for headgear.”

Safety in sports will continue to be debated. New equipment will be manufactured and new standards and rules will implemented for years to come. Every coach and athlete will continue to look for advancements in equipment that will provide them with a competitive advantage over their opponents. Manufacturer’s will look for new material, styles and technology to provide athletes with the equipment they want. Sports’ governing bodies will look for ways to reduce their liability, increase their participants’ safety and maintain the integrity of their sport’s games.

So that begs the question, “How much safety equipment is too much?”.

Many in the women’s lacrosse community fought the mandatory eyewear standard saying it would be detrimental to the game. What will a baseball or softball game look like with all of the fielders wearing helmets?

As children and adults continue to play sports, they will continue to get hurt. Athletes of every size, shape, age and ability already spend millions of dollars each year on protective equipment.

Here at Bangerz, we feel that there is no more important part of an athlete’s ability to play the games they love than their eyes. Injure a joint, pull a muscle, scrap a knee and with the proper care and rehabilitation you’ll be back to 100%. Injure an eye and your entire life will be affected, forever.

Bangerz Sports Eye Protection provides ASTM F803-03 approved eyewear for racquet sports, basketball, baseball, softball, floor hockey, women’s field hockey, women’s lacrosse, soccer and cycling.

Bangerz Sports Eye Protection is worn by the best players on the best teams in the country.

Protect your eyes, wear Bangerz!

Senior Softball

Senior Softball-USA estimates that in the last eight years, the number of players around the country 50 and older has nearly doubled to 2.8 million. According to the executive director of the International Senior Softball Association, one of 10 national senior softball associations, the number of highly organized teams that travel hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to play in tournaments has doubled from 500 to about 1,000 in the last five years.

Playing slow-pitch softball is no longer just for young guys and girls who no longer play baseball or fast-pitch softball.

Senior softball is so popular that it has done the seemingly impossible: Prompted grown men to lie about being older than they really are. Older people are staying more active, and senior softball fits into a lifestyle for seniors. With more and more baby boomers pushing their way past 50, senior softball enthusiasts expect the game to keep growing. There are even some teams comprised of 80 yr. olds and older.

Checking the Spring 2010 edition of “Senior Softball News”, a newspaper format newsletter that touts itself as being “America’s largest circulated senior softball publication” - 107 teams that won various regional tournaments met in Polk County, FL at the fourth annual Senior Softball USA Tournament of Champions. In the “invitation only” tournament winners were crowned in 26 divisions from Men’s 50-Major, 50-AAA, 50-AA through Men’s-80 and four Women’s divisions of 40, 50, 60 and 65 yr. olds.

Then there are the bats. In senior softball, teams are on the lookout for high tech bats that have been banned by the younger player’s organizations, such as ASA and USSA, because they send balls flying a lot farther and a lot faster than other bats. “This year there was a tournament that allowed these 'hotter' bats and a second baseman took one in the eye and lost an eye," said one player. Still, he said, "The majority of these seniors want the bat. It's 'Damn the pitcher, we don't care if he gets killed, we want to hit a home run.'"

Therefore, this year Senior Softball USA has a new rule - PITCHER’S MANDATED MINIMUM SAFETY EQUIPMENT - in which Pitchers shall wear minimum protective safety equipment while pitching, comprised of suitable head gear and shin guards. Pitchers may elect to not wear the mandated safety equipment by signing the back of the Official Game Card over their position in the lineup, for each game they pitch under such an election. By that signature, the Pitcher acknowledges and affirms:

“By electing not to wear the mandated safety equipment, the Pitcher waives any and all claims, individually, and by his or her heirs, and holds harmless Senior Softball World Championships, Inc., its Board of Directors, Senior Softball USA, LLC, any municipal or park facility employees, their agents or employees and Tournament Directors and sponsors from and against any and all loss liability, charges and expenses, etc”. You get the idea, SSUSA is very serious in making sure that, at the minimum, it’s players and especially pitchers understand the risk involved in playing slow-pitch softball particularly as it pertains to eye protection.

Today I received a call from Mark Nickolaou of Karate-Plus. Mark trains martial arts instructors. When he found that martial arts training facilities had trouble finding sources for equipment he started a wholesale business that provides a range of martial arts supplies including heavy bags, uniforms, sparring gear, shoes, weapons, swords, punching bags, and many other items, such as eye protection. Karate-Plus.com carries supplies for karate, kung fu, judo, ninja, ninjutsu, kendo, hapkido, aikido, and many others.

It certainly makes sense that working with young martial arts students that wearing eye protection would be very important.

In addition, making sure that the eye protection provided carries the ASTM F-803 standard for sports eye protection would validate the quality of the product.

All Bangerz Sports Eye Protection is manufactured to ASTM standards. So whether your sport is one of the Big 3, or outside of the mainstream, Bangerz Sports Eye Protection has products that will keep one of your most valuable senses protected, your EYES!

It’s August and Fall sports seasons are right around the corner.

It’s August and Fall sports seasons are right around the corner. NFL teams are in camp, Pop Warner teams have officially started practice and HS and college players are putting the finishing touches on their pre-season workouts and preparing for practice.

Here at Bangerz, we have actually been working on football season since last winter. Yes, our season starts just as the football season ends. Plus, this spring we have introduced a revolutionary new football eyeshield shield that has started to hit the shelves of sporting goods throughout the country.

The HS9900AG, Pro Vu Maxx Anti-Glare Football Eyeshield has a proprietary Chromium Nitrate Flash Coating that eliminates glare from the sun and light reflection during night games. The better the optics of a football shield the bigger the problem glare becomes - Bangerz Chromium Nitrate Flash Coating eliminates all glare thus improving your vision, your performance and gives you an advantage over your opponent. The New BANGERZ Pro VU Maxx Anti Glare Eyeshields eliminate the glare problem of other eyeshields - it increases your confidence on the field and improves your game concentration.

A few years ago “smoke” tinted eyeshields were very popular among skill players hoping to reduce the glare from the sun during day games or the glare from the lights at night games. Unfortunately the NFHS and NCAA both outlawed the use of tinted eyeshields stating they presented a hazard to a player because they prevented an athletic trainer or team physician from being able to see a player’s eyes and therefore making them unable to properly view an early sign of a concussion, dilated pupils.

Left with only the “clear” eyeshield option, players still love the “look” they get from wearing an eyeshield and the protection their eyes receive by doing so. But, players have been unable to gain the added benefit of glare reduction they received by wearing a tinted model.

UNTIL NOW - Bangerz’s new, revolutionary football eyeshield looks clear but totally reduces the glare of the sun and the lights. Think of it as a “tinted” eyeshield that looks “clear”. It’s the best of both worlds!

The NEW Bangerz HS9900AG Anti Glare Football Eyeshield meets NFHS requirements for light transmission and the ability to see a player’s eyes.

Ask for the Bangerz HS9900AG Anti Glare Pro VU Football Eyeshield at your favorite sporting goods retailer this Fall and remember “the best players on the best teams in the country wear Bangerz”.

Dog Days of Summer

The dog days of summer are upon us. July and August means hot weather, bright sun, and a lot of outdoor activities. It also means summer sports camps, weekend tournaments and off- season workouts.

As the level and amount of outdoor activities increases so does the potential for injuries and eye injuries are no exception.

Research indicates that of the 2.4 million eye injuries a year, over 600,000 of them are related to sports and recreational activity. About 42,000 require emergency room attention with 13,500 ending in some level of blindness. But the most amazing statistic is, “90% of all eye injuries could be prevented by wearing ASTM approved eye protection”.1

In the past people did not have a lot of choices when it came to sports eye protection. Many of the products on the market were designed strictly for functionality and lacked any styling that was appealing to the wearer.

Bangerz has changed all of that!

Advances in lens and frame technology and the use of the innovative “Forceflex Flow-through” injection molding manufacturing technique that bonds the frame directly through the lenses sets a new standard in durability and safety. Bangerz models HS7900, HS6800 and HS8700 are made using this new technique. It means you can wear a good looking pair of sunglasses that upon impact with a projectile (ball or stick) will have a frame that will not break, a lens that will out pop out or break, or be pushed back to make contact with your eye. And since they all come with a pre-attached head strap, Bangerz will not fall off of your face. What this means is you will be protected from eye injury 9 out of 10 times more often than if you didn’t wear any eye protection at all. It has also been found that wearing non-ASTM eyewear can be more dangerous than wearing no eyewear at all!

All Bangerz sunglass-style eye protection (HS7900, HS8200, HS8500, HS8700 and HS6800) have compact, light weight TR-90 nylon frames for impact protection. They have optically correct, high impact shatterproof polycarbonate lenses that are also coated for anti-fog and anti-scratch resistance. Adjustable, washable retention head straps hold then sunglasses in place.

All of these advancements combine to provide a stylish line of sports eye protection that in addition to keeping you looking good, also provide you with protection from finger pokes, foreign airborne hazards and projectiles such as balls and sticks, etc.

No matter what sport you play either competitively or recreationally Bangerz has good-looking eye protection to meet your needs.
