Hemingway’s Drinking & Dining Restaurant encourages you to take a step back in time, to an era when what is now concrete was lush verdant fields. This beautiful old house was originally built more than 90 years ago in the early 1920’s using very rare golden teak.

The Siamese Ambassador to Laos in the 1930s, the son of King Rama VIII’s Royal Guardian, later acquired the house. It has since been home to several foreign ambassadors to Siam including the French ambassador in the 1940s, who reportedly had stables on the premises.

The house was built on the banks of the Prakanong Canal, as this part of the canal resembled the majestic Chaophraya River as it ran through Ayutthaya, Siam’s ancient capital. In those days, the only traffic noises were the paddles of boats against a background of tropical birdsong and the neighing of horses once the French ambassador arrived: a time long, long before Sukhumvit Road was built, when this part of the world was known as the ‘mysterious Far East’.

The original house this venue is styled around was built in the time of King Rama VII in 1926. The house has some famous history that we used for the focus of the venue.

Using the myth of the man we’ve created 5 different rooms styled around where Hemingway lived, from Spain we have the Spanish Gardens, Cuba we have the Habana Bar, Florida we have the Key West Cafe, France we have The Hideaway, and Africa we have the Safari Sports Bar.

All the rooms in the venue are themed to the motif of their geographical location. The food & beverage menus take you on a journey through the history of main items, how they got their name and why we chose to put them on the menu.

Set on the very quite soi 14 just off the main Sukhumvit road, below the Asok BTS station, the house has a magical feel of an olden day experience creating an escape of the concrete jungle to a vintage venue oasis in the heart of Bangkok.

They say nothing lasts forever, however some things last for a very long time, and this house is one of them.

The beautiful old golden teak house, which we are now proud to call home personifies no other icon from this classic era more than the famous Ernest Hemingway.

One of life’s great characters, he traveled to some of the world’s most interesting and exotic places. The mojito-fuelled dance bars of old Havana, the sultry fishing backwaters of Key West Florida and the timeless romantic boulevards of Paris.

This living definition of a ‘real man’ ran with the bulls in Pamplona and hunted rhinos on the Serengeti. From being famously wounded in WWI to fighting for democracy in the Spanish Civil War in the 1936, he rarely did any of this without a drink in hand, somehow never spilling a drop. Oh, and he wrote a few books along the way.

Ernest Hemingway is one of the greatest storytellers ever published. He was also a rare artist recognized for his inspiring work within his lifetime. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1952 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, he drew consistently from his own experiences of love, war, wilderness and loss to describe every human experience. The New York Times described his writing style as “lean, hard, athletic narrative prose”, yet displayed subtle depths of humanity, succinctly described.

But Hemingway was also much more than that… He was an explorer and an adventurer. He really is one of life’s true great characters! This upstanding gentleman explored the great tastes and flavours the world has to offer: the wines of Spain; the complex Campari-lined cocktails of Italy; the mojitos and daiquiris of Cuba; and the sophisticated martinis of Paris. He was rarely seen without a pint in his hand, or his favourite soft drink – a scotch and soda.

Hemingway’s legacy lives through our venue, offering a place befitting every mood, a space for every thought and a flavour to satisfy every taste. We hope you can enjoy it with us every day!

Hemingway’s menu reflects the great adventures and travels of Ernest Hemingway and the amazing tastes and flavours the world has to offer. Our menu is Inspired by his passion for food and drink & we’re sure you’ll find the menu fitting of his appetite for life.

Prasarn Trairatvorakul said the current economic situation, which is seeing capital outflows, does not indicate a necessity for a further rate cut, and other countries in the region have not slashed their benchmark rates yet.

The BOT’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) reduced the key rate by 25 basis points to 2.50 per cent at its May 29 meeting. After the move, the yields of short-term bonds reduced, but those of long-term bonds increased, and that led to money-market expectations of no further rate cuts for now.

The MPC will need to consider recent economic data at its next meeting.

In response to the Indonesian central bank’s decision to raise its policy rate, Prasarn said that country had internal problems not shared by Thailand.

Prasarn conceded, however, that the BOT remained concerned about the level of household debts at 78 per cent of gross domestic product, amounting to Bt8 trillion. The central bank is closely monitoring this and is ready to launch control measures if necessary. While Thailand’s macroeconomic conditions remain solid despite the slower growth in the first quarter, the high household…

The budget airline has set its sights firmly on the ATR 72, a twin-engine turboprop short-haul airliner built by the French-Italian aircraft maker ATR, for the fleet growth plan.

Chief executive Patee Sarasin said even though Nok Air management has received a green light from its board to acquire six ATR 72s as soon as possible, the limited market availability of such aircraft means only two can be secured this year.

Nok Air is advancing its negotiations to buy two brand-new ATR 72s, listed at US$19 million each, as it is hard to obtain them through leasing because of strong demand.

The airline is bargaining for a discount on the two ATR 72s, with hopes of them joining the fleet later this year.

“It’s long overdue to have more ATR aircraft in our fleet,” Mr Patee said, adding…

The Association of Domestic Travel (ADT) has urged the government to launch more aggressive campaigns to encourage Thai tourists to think first about holidays in their homeland before visiting such countries as Japan.

The ADT wants this action taken before Japan relaxes its visa applications for Thai travellers in August, one of its summer months.

The association says it expects 10-15 per cent of Thai holidaymakers will be attracted to turn their eyes to Japan, at the cost to Thai tourism. The scrapping of visa applications will make travel to Japan much easier, according to ADT president Yutthachai Soonthronrattanavate.

It projects that 400,000 Thais will travel to Japan this year.

To stem this outflow of tourists, the government will have to stimulate Thai sentiment to travel here, mainly through tour agencies. It should introduce promotional campaigns to local tourists similar to those of consumer products such as green tea, which offer discounted services and also lucky draws for big prizes such as cars, Yutthachai said.

Recently, the Tourism Council of Thailand asked the government to offer tax reductions for local tourists by allowing them to claim a maximum of Bt15,000 on their income-tax returns. This was also aimed at narrowing a gap between tourism revenue contributed…

“The new factory will enable us to achieve more than a twofold increase in our production capacity, which is currently 1.8 million square feet per month. This will benefit the growth of the industry as well as meet the growing demand of our customers,” Bancha Ongkosit, managing director of KCE Electronics, a top producer and exporter of PCBs in Southeast Asia, said yesterday.

“This factory will invest in highly advanced technology and be automated, helping us to increase efficiency and achieve greater productivity while reducing the labour force, resulting in efficient cost management,” he said.

The board of directors at their meeting approved the project.

Construction will be in three phases. Phase I has a budget of Bt2.8 billion and will take one year. Production of 700,000 square feet per month is expected to begin by the end of next year.

Phase II has a budget of Bt484 million. It is expected to expand production capacity by 600,000 square feet per month by the end of…

At present, MHG has almost 90 properties in its portfolio.

The company is very optimistic about the tourism outlook in both Thailand and Asean in the next five years. The full liberalisation of the Asean Economic Community and the strong tourism industry in Thailand will lead to robust economic growth in the region.

Chief executive Dillip Rajakarier said MHG also projects the ratio of its own and managed hotels in the portfolio will be 50:50 in the next five years.

The company’s fast-moving culture drives its value. When it sees business opportunities, it will respond immediately, and this has produced compound annual growth…

Peera Lucksanapirak, marketing communications director at GMM CJ O Shopping, said yesterday that the company has earmarked about 5 per cent of sales for marketing activities including roadshows and promotions in key provinces outside Bangkok.

Bangkok contributes about 60 per cent of sales while the rest is from upcountry. By year-end, the company expects to get more than 50 per cent from upcountry, where purchasing power is strong. The company has set its sales target at Bt500 million this year.

The company will also produce more live shows for its home shopping TV channel, which is available on satellite and cable TV networks including GMM Z, PSI, DTV and CTH. Its 30-minute live show for product demonstration currently airs on Wednesdays and Fridays and should move to a daily schedule by October.

To expand its viewer base, the company also brought another product-demonstration programme to run twice a week on Channel 6, which is operated by Freesize Broadcating, a joint venture of leading content producer Workpoint Entertainment and PSI Holding, the country’s largest manufacturer and distributer of C-band satellite TV…

Japanese companies are reinventing their industrial models to regain full competitiveness, as the country has had a tough time in recent years, according to Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.

The Nation

The new Roland Berger study – “Industry Model 2.0: Raising the Competitiveness of Corporate Japan” – analyses the key differences between Japanese companies and businesses from other major countries. The study also looks at several examples of successful and unsuccessful business models chosen by Japanese companies to define the key features for good business.

In response to the stagnating domestic market and strong competition from foreign businesses, Japanese companies have started developing new strategies. Nevertheless, except for a small number of companies, the traditional business model still remains predominant in Japan. Only 63 per cent of Japanese companies are focusing on fewer than three business segments, compared to over 80 per cent in the US, France or Germany.

“The general assumption is that a diversified portfolio makes it possible to minimise risks. Still, companies with a highly diversified portfolio were as badly hit by recent crises as sector-focused ones, and they had more difficulty in recovering,” says Martin Tonko, partner and co-author of this study. In fact, in contrast to highly diversified groups, Japanese companies focusing on a single sector have experienced annual sales growth above 10 per cent since…
