Potato Can be Stored by Drying

Potato is the world's fourth largest food crop - following maize, wheat and rice. Potato is an important crop of the Rabi Season in Bangladesh, providing about 8.5 million tons food supply in each year.

Potato can not be stored at room temperature. Because, It will grow sprouts and will be no more edible. In general, farmers keep their potato in the cold store. But irregular supply of electricity and load-shading disrupts the storing process and potato start decaying.

This is the sad story of Potato cultivation in Bangladesh.But, we can solve the problem by applying a simple technology. Potato can be stored by drying and the process needs only a few steps:

1.   Potato needs to be boiled and skin should be removed after boiling
2.   Boiled potato should be mashed in to paste or small fragments and sun dried up to 10 to 11 % of moisture level
3.   Sun dried potato fragments should be kept in polythene bag or PET bottles in airtight condition

Dried potato fragments with 10~11% moisture level can be kept in polythene bags or PET bottles for round the year. Dried potato fragments can be used in preparation of soups, cakes, curries and in other relevant recipes.

Nourishing the History and Heritage and Selling the Local Famous Products: The Business Concept of "Upa Zilla Info-Museum" in Bangladesh

1. There is an urgent need for maintaining, nourishing and caring the history and heritage of Bangladesh like a child. A country can enthusiastically nourish its own history, heritage and culture only by herself.

2. In a developing country, it is a very difficult task to nourish a sector which is not proven as 'economically profitable'. In Bangladesh 'Archiving' or establishing small 'Local museum' at Upa Zilla level is holding its position under this non-profit category. But, the situation can be changed by doing some 'home work' with the problem. Because on the other side of every problem there is a solution of the same hiding unnoticed - just we need to discover and implement it.

3. Initially, some brave entrepreneurs are needed to "make, own and show" the sample to the people technique for small and profitable entrepreneurship with archiving at some places in Bangladesh. After receiving the feed back and earning of experiences from the trial and error method, country wise expansion program may be taken later.

4. The concept is: There may be an "Upa Zilla Info-Museum" at the Upa Zilla level that can be owned by an individual or an NGO. At this moment 'Archiving' or 'Local Museum' may not come as the 'Main Dish' of the Info Museum. Let it come with a side dish or even 'Salad' or Salt, ultimately it will capture its' position by its own virtue.

5. The "Upa Zilla Info-Museum" may collect and display local old documents, literature, relevant to the culture and the concerned Upa Zilla and the society. It can also collect and display antiques, samples of marketable local handicrafts and sale famous foods or agricultural products. People may enter in the display to see the old items and can purchase the local handicrafts, food and other agricultural products. Earning from the sales profit will help to run the center

6. At the 'Upa Zilla Info-Museum' people will supply their products, people will come to see their product and people will purchase their product. Like democracy, the salable product will be of the people, by the people and for the people.

7. If anybody can make it a successful venture in any place, people from other areas of the country will come forward to try with this business idea. This is simply a small business concept and we hope that the later versions of the "Upa Zilla Info -Museum" will be of higher quality and more successful.

New shoots are emerging from the root system and acquiring more spaces.

Step 10.

Grasses are growing more and acquiring spaces all over the island @ 360^o horizontally.

At last the green gasses have covered almost all over the new island.

By this time, other species of salinity tolerant plantlets come through water streams to occupy the island. Some Sundari plantlets are seen germinating here.

Step 4. Another newly grown up island is seen on the left side of the photograph. Only different types of salinity tolerant plants have started occupying the land at the moment. Consequently, animals will start coming later after ensuring their food.

Step 5. At first, the Salinity tolerant grasses start growing on the new-born island. Burgeoning roots are the vegetative propagation material of the grasses that start growing new leafs soon after anchoring their roots in the top soil. Sprouting roots are seen on the soft muddy soil.

Step 6. Constant deposition of silts soon covers up the roots of the grass that enables the root system consuming of more nutrients for a vigorous and continuous growth.

7. Strongly established grass bushes are growing and becoming taller

Step 8. Everyday and night rivers have been continuously bringing new raw materials to form the islands in the Bay of Bengal. Sunset is being seen from a new born island near Sundarban.

Step 2. Within 10-15 days, freshwater weeds like water hyacinths die due to excess salinity in the water. At the entering points of the Bay of Bengal there are no water hyacinths seen floating on the Channels. After complete decomposition of the living freshwater fauna, their residues and other river sediments are deposited on the bottom of the Bay of Bengal.

THE BIRTH OF AN ISLAND AND EXTENSION OF FOREST IN THE SUNDARBAN AREA OF THE BAY OF BENGAL

The Sundarban is the largest single mangrove in the world."Sundarban" literally means "Beautiful jungle" or "beautiful forest" in the Bangla language. The name Sundarban may have been derived from the Sundari trees that are commonly found in Sundarban in large numbers.

The forest lies at the mouth of the Ganges and is spread across areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, forming the seaward fringe of the delta. The forest covers about 10,000 sq.km of which about 6,000 are in Bangladesh.It became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997. The Sundarban is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and very small Char area (islands) of salt-tolerant mangrove forests (Source: Wikipedia). The area is known for the Royal Bengal Tiger, as well as numerous fauna including species of birds, spotted deer, crocodiles and snakes. It is estimated that there are now about 450Royal Bengal tigers and 50,000 spotted deer in the area.

The forest also has immense protective and productive functions. Constituting 51% of the total reserved forest estate of Bangladesh it contributes about 41% of total forest revenue and accounts for about 45% of all timber and fuel wood output of the country (FAO, 1995).

A number of industries (e.g. newsprint mill, match factory, hardboard, boat building, furniture making) are based on the raw material obtained from the Sundarban ecosystem. Various non-timber forest products and plantations help generate considerable employment and income generation opportunities for at least half a million poor coastal population. Besides production functions of the forest, it provides natural protection to life and properties of the coastal population in cyclone prone Bangladesh.

We will tell the story of the development and extension of a jungle adjacent to the Sundarban area. There will be about 30-40 photographs in this story. All of them are shoot by me during the visits in Sundarban from 2008 to 2013. We will show you the process of developing and extension of the jungle by showing you the photographs chronologically.

Can we do something to sustain

these smiles longer

They need some nutritious food. They need some good education. They also need some other persons love and care who can share their smiles with them. Both of them are politically very conscious.

Left one is Sumon; he supports Awami League and likes Sheikh Hasina. Right one is Arif. He likes Khaleda Zia and supports BNP. Although they have huge differences in political opinions; however, in principle they were agreed to pose for a photograph together. The photo was taken from Mirpur area of Dhaka city in 2010.

Few days before, a man in the bus in a gossip was commenting that politicians are the most important daughters and sons of the soils of Bangladesh. Because whatever good, bad or indifferent things have been done in favor or against Bangladesh, they are the politicians who have done it. The so called Sushil Somaaz and the rich knowledgeable Aantels have done nothing except reciting few lines from some poems compared to the politicians.

"Honey Saline!"
- A breakthrough in ORS formulation.

Diarrhea is one of the most rapid-acting fatal diseases known in the World. Globally, diarrhea kills more children than AIDS in each year. About two million people die every year from diarrhea; among them, 90% are children under 5 and mostly they are from the developing countries.

It has been observed that on first sight of diarrhea, administering of the modified honey ORS to the patient, the disease could be immediately stopped on more than 95% incidences. Honey based oral Saline works on diarrhea patient just like a Magic, Miracle or Mozeza (you name it).

This small but effective breakthrough has been made by Mohammad Abdullah in the formulation of ORS - Just by replacing the cane sugar with Natural Honey as honey also contains the two main sugars, i.e., fructose and glucose.

It has been found in recent scientific research that honey also prevents the development of harmful bacteria and other pathogenic micro organisms in the human digestive system.

The amount of other two components in the ors formulation, i.e., water and table salt (sodium chloride) will remain the same.

The 'Hero of Kotka' will die in 2014

I saw this date palm at Kotka beach of Sundarban at first during November 2008. It was just one year after the hurricane Sidre hit the southern part of Bangladesh. The hurricane Sidre hit on 15^th November midnight in 2007 in the coastal districts of Bangladesh - particularly Khulna and Barisal while crossing from northern Bay of Bengal. The tidal surge of 15-16 feet high and strong winds of 260 KM per hour made mass disaster for over 14 hours of strike.

Amazingly, this date palm was strong enough to survive from that huge hurricane. I was astonished to see the plant standing there like a real hero. Although there were hundreds and thousands of Sundari and other non-palm plant that were devastatingly laid down on the forest floor by the hurricane. I gave a name to this date palm - 'the Hero of Kotka'. Even the old branches of the plant were could not be removed by the hurricane Sidre.

Last week, during mid December in 2013, we visited Kotka of Sundarban again where the date plant lived. This time it was really sad and heartbreaking episode for me to see the date plant again. I felt, the plant is on its' death bed and ultimately it will die very soon. There were only one or two mid leafs of the plant alive.

During the last five years, the sea has come forward toward north at least 250~300 feet. The date palm could not tolerate the saline water during the regular tidal waves from the sea. In fact, global climate has been really changed and sequentially sea level is gaining altitude continuously. In case of Bangladesh, the Bay of Bengal has advanced about 250~300 ft towards north and ultimately death is the final destination of this date palm.

We are not sure, what are the other changes and challenges awaiting for us due to global climate change.

Magical Green Revolution on
Rice Production in Bangladesh

A local variety can make the wonderful job in rice production in Bangladesh. Since long, the variety has been cultivated in Habiganj of Sylhet in Bangladesh. This rice variety is basically suitable for cultivation during Aman season. The production of this variety may exceed 40 mounds per bigha or 12 tons per hectare. The plant height can go beyond 6 ft which can help in production of this variety in beel, jheel, haaor and other inundated areas in Bangladesh.

A part of the rice field can be seen; initially only one tiny rice seedling was transplanted in each hill. Now, you will find around 80-100 tillers in one bunch.

The existing hybrid or high yielding varieties are of normally short height. But, the long and elongated growing quality of this variety can help in rearing and extension of livestock farming with its hay as roughage (or dry fodder) for nourishing the cows and buffalo at farmers premises.

Do not confuse this with a sugarcane field. This is the same rice field showing one side of the row.

As this variety grows in Aman season - therefore, it can help in releasing and make freedom of a significant portion of the rice field in Boro season for cultivation of other Rabi crop like pulses, vegetables, and oil seeds in Bangladesh.

A six-year old kid is smiling under the six-feet tall rice plant. The photograph will help you to understand the height of these rice plants.

Further, it can take the special advantage of free water falling from the sky during the rainy season and Bangladesh can save a significant amount of foreign currency for running the engine driven shallow irrigation tube wells all over the country. Simultaneously, the country will be saved from disturbing the natural ecological balance by over utilization of sub-surface water.

Can you imagine the production ? The rice variety can produce 40 mounds per bigha during Aman season, i.e. twelve tons per hectare! We are not sure, is it a natural competitor variety of Super Rice?

Importance of Oil Palm Plantation in Bangladesh

Oil palm plantation is considered as a long term profitable investment for any country like Bangladesh whose economy is primarily based on agriculture. There are so many negative and anti-oil palm campaigns are consistently being made from the different corners of the globe without fail. However, palm oil cultivation has been increased tremendously during the last four decades in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and some other tropical countries including India.

The soil and climatic conditions in Bangladesh is suitable for mass plantation of Oil Palm. Especially, in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachori area may be taken in the account as the most suitable places for long term agricultural investment considering the Oil Palm Plant as the best tool.

Oil Palm Plantation in the newly developed Char Lands and other Islands in the Sundarban may protect Khulna, Mongla, Saatkhira, Bagerhaat and other adjacent areas of Bangladesh from the destructive and devastating power of the cyclonic storms developed in the Bay of Bengal.

If sufficient care is taken, an Oil Palm plant can produce fruits continuously for 40-50 years. Therefore, a moderately proficient farmer can built his personal economy by starting an Oil Palm plantation only in three Bighas of land.

Ultimately, oil palm plantation - continuously by one after another farmers, will help growing a healthy economy of Bangladesh in near future, In-Sha-Allah.

Producing Golden Oil from the Palm Fruit

During 2008, some advanced farmers started planting of palm oil tree in Bangladesh. In 2012, the plants started producing fruits in different areas including Bandarban, Thakurgaon, Tangail, Kushtia and Jessore districts of Bangladesh. Palm oil production is very profitable in comparison with other agricultural crops. However, the farmers could not produce palm oil from the palm fruit, as they did not know the technology.

Here is a method for producing edible oil from the ripen palm fruit:

1. To produce palm oil from the palm fruits people need to parboil the fruit for 30-40 minutes and separate the fruits from the stocks, sepal and thorny small sticks of the fruit bunch.

2. After separation from the thorns, sepal and other debris, fruits are nicely cleaned, washed and again boiled for about one hour. Approximately 30-35 minutes will be OK if pressure cooker is used.

3. After the 2nd time boiling, the fruits are squeezed or mildly hammered to make a smash. Care should be taken so that the seeds inside of the fruits are not broken. The oil-rich, fiber-mixed smash is separated from the seed. The smash is squeezed mechanically to separate the oil extract from the fiber.

4. The creamy golden raw extract is heated in aluminium made pot to expel the water. When there will be no water bubble seen in the pot, nice golden color palm oil will be appeared in the pot. Let the oil be cooled.

5. Oil is separated, filtered and poured in glass bottle for storing and consumption.

Marginal farmers of the developing countries can use this simple machine for manual shelling of maize seeds from the corn cob. A Bangladeshi scientist has invented the Plastic Coin that could be made of different denominations. This type of coins can be made of hard nylons, ABS plastics and other synthetic materials. The numeric figure which will represent the denomination mark may be embossed at one side of the coin. Any alphabets, symbols or slogans can be embossed or imprinted on the other side of the coin. Pre-school going kids are expert of tearing out the alphabet learning books @ one book per week. This coin will help the kids learning the alphabets and numeric figures of their mother language and other international languages without letting them to tear out the reading materials.

The name of the issuing Government or the authority and relevant information may be embossed on one side of the coin. Is the World ready to harvest

the advantages of Centesimal Time?

A Bangladeshi scientist has invented the Centesimal Time counting system, which is based on the formula of 'One hundred'. In this method of counting time, 1 day + 1 consecutive night = 100 hour, 1 hour = 100 minutes and 1 minute = 100 seconds.

Earlier, the human being at their prehistoric civilization could identify and utilize only day and night or the sun and the moon; i.e., our prehistoric fore-fathers could manage only 2 simple divisions of the time, i.e., the 'light' and the 'dark'.

In ancient Bangladesh and some parts of India, people divided the day and nights in to "Prohor". Hundreds of years ago, people of Bangladesh divided a day and the consecutive night in to eight (8) divisions or, Prohors. There are four Prohors in a day and another four Prohors in a night, i.e., total eight Prohors. That means, a Prohor consists of three hours on the basis of 24 hours.

Later, the human civilization learned to divide the time of a consecutive day and night in to 24 hours. Man invented sand clocks and spring driven timepieces to watch, monitor and best utilize their time.

Now we, the mankind need a more precise time counting system to cope up with the fast and forward moving life. The electronics industry have the necessary microchips and LCD/ LED displays to make any gadgets that will use this system to show the time, which will ultimately change the way of counting time.

It is expected that this 100 unit base time counting system will replace the old 24 hours > 60 minutes > 60 seconds based time counting method. It will give the mankind the opportunity of best utilization of time by partitioning it more precisely.

In the Centesimal System, as for example, the dial of a digital timepiece will show the times as follows:

Starting from the zero hour         = 00: 00: 01
Late night at 3:00 am                = 12: 50: 00
Morning at 6: 00 am = 25: 00: 00

Therefore, the more active and hard-working people will get some supplementary time instantly after the sunset to prepare their work plan for tomorrow.

It is expect that the people of this planet will consider the proposal and may include this new system of counting time in their new clocks, smart phones, computers and other gadgets and take a vital part in changing the way that we, the mankind count the time.

Operation Principle of the 'Air Car'

Like an airplane, the Air Car has two wings in the two sides of its fuselage. One or more engines may be fitted with the wings to force the Air Car for moving forward. In the small Air Cars, piston engines apply power to the propellers to give the required force to the vehicle towards forward motion. Bangladesh is a riverine country. Rivers are important for Bangladesh as the Artery and Veins are important for a human body. Naturally, hundreds of rivers are flowing over the country. But we are not effectively utilizing the beneficial sides of the rivers. The source of these rivers are basically the Himalayan mountains. The water vapors from the Bay of Bengal fly as clouds and deposited as glaciers over the Himalayan mountains. During the monsoon rainfall starts and the rivers, beels, Haaors, and other low lands of the country are inundated with the rainwater. Sometimes flood occurs and marginally poor people suffers from the flood water. Occasionally, flush flood wipes out the rice crop from the farmers field. If everything goes well, people can harvest their golden rice crop from the field and they can feed their family well.

Now a days, rivers are occupied by the greedy river grabbers and land robbers of this country. For example, Buriganga river of Dhaka and other similar type of rivers have been occupied by the land grabbers and river robbers. They are occupying the rivers, establishing their right there by making falls documents. River grabbers are filling the occupied rivers with sands and selling them as plots to the different types of customers to build their houses and markets. The customers are purchasing the plots having an idea that there will be no government or powerful person who can eliminate them from their unethical and illegal occupancy.

But, sometimes some miracle can happen. Let us have an example. There was a very big building was situated at the end of the Bijoy Sarani at Tejgaon area in Dhaka. This big tower was called as Rangs Bhaban . The building was established during late eighties in the last century. The building was established in the middle of a road by just creating an obstacle for further expansion of a major communication gateway. The owner of that building was a very rich and influential person who had very good relations with some politically powerful persons. That time everybody was thinking that there is no possibility of expansion of the road as the Rangs Tower was standing in the middle of the road as the great obstacle. Actually, the building was prohibiting the connection of two important roads of eastern Tejgaon area to Bijoy Sarani road.

And yes, some miracle can happen any time. In 2007, a Caretaker government came to the power in Bangladesh and the building was wipe out from the skyline of Dhaka. If you visit the place now at the Eastern end of the Bijoy Sarani, you will discover that there is no Rangs Building there. Instead, you can drive your vehicle to the Mohakhali ~ Maghbazaar road from that Bijoy Sarani Road.

How long the Bangladeshi people should wait for the day when a benevolent government will come and wipe out the illegal occupancy from the rivers of Bangladesh from those hands of the Land Robbers and River Grabbers?

by breaking down agricultural systems, deteriorating water scarcity, increasing the risks of diseases due to recurring floods, and storms like the Cyclone Sidre. The hurricane Sidre hit on 15^th November midnight in 2007 in the coastal districts particularly Khulna and Barishal while crossing

from northern Bay of Bengal. The high tidal surge of 15-16 feet high and strong winds of 260 KM per hour made mass disaster for over 14 hours of strike.

The devastation was so severe that it would take about 10 years to recover from the losses. After Sidre, some people suggested the government to ensure not to take it as an opportunity to make quick money from felled trees, because we need to save the environment.

Some people expressed their concern that the government should ensure selling of those plants so that some sort of condolence money can be obtained from the felled trees. Every country has different types of their own natural resources and there is no harm if the people use their resources in well judged manner.

Other people argued not to sale the felled trees because of that some crooked auction/ lease owner will cut fresh new trees along with those felled trees and will make extra unfair money by selling both the felled and fresh live trees together.

However, nobody took any decisions and the cyclone felled trees are still lying and being decaying in the coastal areas of the Sundarbans.

, you will find this date palm tree abundantly growing here and there without any special care from anybody. Normally the crow, shalik, bulbuli and other small birds act as the disseminator of the seeds of this date palm. However, there are some farmers who take initiatives to collect the plantlets from roadsides and transplant on the borders of their own lands.

The Date palm juice is obtained by removing the top thorny branches with a bend knife. During the early winter (October-November) the Juice collectors or the Gachi prepare the plant for juice production. After removing the thorny braches of the tree, normally they allow about 10-15 days for recovering the tree from the branch-removing shock. Next time, they make a small triangle on the tree-top for a shaving. They make a regular shaving on the upper skin of the triangle on the top of the tree with the sharp knife. A cut piece from a small bamboo is inserted to flow the juice towards a soil-made pot.

In the afternoon, the tree is shaved and the soil-made pot is hanged on the tree top for collection of the juice. The juice excreted from the shaved part of the plant and deposited in the pot. The juice is collected in the morning. Normally, a Gachi (Juice collector) can sale this fresh juice for drinking or he can make brown sugar (Guhr) by boiling the juice. A date palm can give about 350-450 liters of fresh juice in a year. The Brix ratio of the juice is estimated to be around 10 degree. On an average, about 40 kg of brown sugar or Guhr may be produced from a single date palm in a year.

We see a very promising potential from the date palm for an alternative to sugar production from sugarcane. Guhr has a very special flavor which is better than the white sugar produced from sugarcane. People of

The tree is very smart in protecting itself from the hurricane, cyclone and storm. During 2008, I found a date palm tree in the Kochikahli area of Sundarban in

. Kochikahli is a sea shore place adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. That Kochikhali date palm hero saved himself from the cyclone Sidre and still it is standing on the beach. There are also some other coconut and palm trees are still living on that piece of land after Aila, another cyclonic storm that hit the area after the cyclone Sidre.

This hints show us that the date palm, coconut and Palmyra palms are the strong and smart enough that can help

However, due to excessive application of insecticides and pesticides in the rice fields, most of the areas have become unsuitable as natural breeding place for the different types of local fishes.

People living in the low land areas avail the opportunity of capturing fishes from the open fields after inundation with the flood water. Fishing is a Hobby-cum-Occupation in the low-land areas. This practice becomes a routine work during the monsoon rainy season, when it rains almost every day.

In the remote villages almost every houses have a pond near them. The Beels, Haaors and other low land areas are teaming with fish, which provides most of the protein for people living in rural areas.

Nosimon is made in Bangladesh

Bangladeshi people are very creative. They can face their problems on their own way. Bangladeshi village mechanics have developed a vehicle, named Nosimon, somebody call it 'Bhutbuti'. Definitely, Nosimon is that vehicle, which is developed by the people, are being used by the people and is dedicated for the people.

Nosimon is made in Bangladesh. It takes about US$500/= to build a Nosimon. It is a good example of the creativity of Bangladeshi people.

In the village area in northern Bangladesh, a local mechanic can build a Nosimon in his garage without any sophisticated robotic production line. Generally, an 8-12 hp Diesel engine is required to build a Nosimon.

Farmers never mind to go here and there by Nosimons. Although, Nosimon is not as comfortable like a deluxe car, i.e., Mercedes or a BMW, however, farmers enjoy it. Because, they can afford it and it can serve their purpose well. Do you notice the cow enjoying a ride behind the driver in this Nosimon in the picture?

The local bus service owners hate the Nosimon owner; because, Nosimon owners are grasping a chunk of their earnings by offering a cheap alternative to the farmers. The passengers are counting less fare which is very cheap in comparison with the bus and Rickshaw van.

The Diesel engines required for building Nosimons are imported from China. Nosimon can carry 10 persons including a cow. Engines are fixed on the mild steel made chassis. The body of the Nosimon is made from local hard wood timbers. The rear axle is driven by v-belts from the engine pulley. Nosimon does not require a gearbox.

Probably, Nosimon is the cheapest private transport in the world that have such smart carrying capacity (farmers along with their cows) without any gearbox!

Dried potato fragments with 10~11% moisture level can be kept in polythene bags or PET bottles for round the year. Dried potato fragments can be used in preparation of soups, cakes, curries and in other relevant recipes.
