I just learned this tune from Jon Gersh and Kathy Fletcher, two fine Boston area old time musicians, but it turns out Ed already knew it! Dang know it all! Ed is picking his Ome, in sawmill, capo on 2, I am using my short scale Paramount, tuned aEABE.

MURASAKI - IYASAKA solo version

MURASAKI is the music which I made about 15 years ago. I was playing the musical accompaniment of the local festival until the high school days. IYASAKA is that festival music which was made 300 years ago in my native town. I playing this music by the Drumming style of the original style. Drumming style: The code sound is flicking all five strings with the third finger of the right hand to beat a banjo. The melody sound is flicking to make the Tapping of the left hand and finger pick of the metal of the right hand like the hammer dulcimer to hit against one string. The tuning is gCGAD. Another good old tune with Ed playing clawhammer style on his Ome, and me playing three finger style on my short-neck Paramount. Ed is in open G, capoed on 2. My banjo is tuned aEABE. The original recording was seven minutes long, so I cut it about in half. Too bad, it got much weirder as we went on.

This is my arrangement of the flamenco tune by Ottmar Liebert. When I first heard Liebert play this on the guitar, I thought, "this should be played on a banjo!" My wife, Lynn, plays bass on this arrangement, playing the bass with a bow in the intro. and the ending of this tune. Thanks, Lynn! Irv Wright is on dobro and the late Ray Peterson is on guitar.

Soldiers Joy - BG & CH banjos

A second take on old favorite Soldiers Joy that is heavy on the joy and light on the finesse. Another example of a version of a tune I had to learn immediately after first hearing it. This is based HEAVILY on Mary Z. Cox's rendition from her album "Vintage Banjo" (if you don't have it, get it), basically because I couldn't think of any way to improve upon it! My brother is on guitar.
