Question: Tell us about yourself and the selections you have got (along with roll numbers)?

Answer: I am from Patna and I have done my graduation and schooling from here only. I am a student of economics. I did my Masters’ in economics from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune in 2008. After that I tried for a job in the private sector but couldn’t get anything suitable. At that time, high numbers of vacancies were being announced in the banking sector. So, I decided to try for bank po exams. I started my preparation in 2010.

I have got only one final selection till now (final selection in SBI as a PO). My roll no. is 8210020784.

Question: Tell us the name of books, magazines, websites which have contributed in your success?
Answer: My method of preparation was based on self-study. I began studying reasoning from the book by R.S. Agarwal. I must say the first section of the book is very useful. It helps a lot to get a grasp of the reasoning section. But the section dealing with logical or analytical reasoning is not up to the mark. The basic concepts required to answer the questions are not dealt there. It was not of much help for me. For this section, I used the book by BSC publication on analytical reasoning. This book deals with the concepts thoroughly. After doing reasoning with the R.S. Agarwal book, I took admission in one of the coaching institutes (Mahindra) and used their study material for practice. Their study material is good, except for the analytical reasoning part. I also took their mock tests periodically. Their mock tests also helped me a lot. I didn’t attend their classes because they didn’t add any value.

Apart from this, in order to improve my DI, I used the book by M Tyra published by BSC. I just did the DI and DS chapters.

For the GA part, I read the Hindu and pratiyogita darpan regularly.

For English I didn’t need to prepare. I could do it comfortably right from the beginning. I saw some books in the initial phase of my preparation. I must say that no book available in the market except Wren and Martin is useful for preparation.

Question: What is your advice to the aspirants preparing for competitive exams?
Answer: As an advice to the students preparing for competitive exams, especially banks, I would say that their preparation should be aligned completely with the pattern of the examination. They should know what is required to be studied and how much effort is required to be made for each section according to their strength and weakness. And relying more on accuracy rather than speed is required.

Question: What was the medium of your interview and GD? Is medium makes any difference?

Answer: The medium of my Interview and GD was English and I don’t think medium makes any difference because I know some people who had Hindi as their medium and got selected.

Question: What do you think about www.bankexams.org & Bank Exams Preparation Group, are they useful in your preparation?

Answer: I didn’t use the website much but I found the group to be very useful. Through the group, I could get the right perspective. I don’t have many friends in Patna which are preparing for bank exams. In this group I found many good students who are preparing for banks.

Dear students, as interview season of bank exams is going on and it is going to further intensify, it’s the high time to prepare well for your bank exams interviews. In our series of posts on preparation for bank PO or bank exams interviews, we are once again publishing the interview experiences of one of very bright members of our Bank Exams Preparation Group Mr. Madhav Joshi. He has recently appeared in the UBI PO interview and we are publishing the exact interview questions & experiences he had, as informed by him.

Interview Experiences of Mr. Madhav Joshi:

Please find below my interview experience at Union Bank of India. I hope it will help bank PO aspirants in some ways.

My Education: BE + MBA

Present Job: Currently working as a PO in an SBI sponsored RRB.

Interview location: Mumbai

First thing to be noted is that UBI people were in haste to wind up all interviews. Most of the interviews held before mine hardly lasted for more than 5 minutes. In few cases, they merely asked candidates 'tell me about yourself' and after getting answer, replied, "OK you may go now."

My turn was at 12 pm and I reached the venue at 11:20 am. Document verification process went on for few minutes and my turn came around 12:15 pm.

I entered the room, there were three members. (1 of them was an IAS officer, as per other candidates)

Interview:

So Mr. Joshi, you're coming from Gujarat. Good. Please have a seat.

Me: Yes Sir. I am from Gujarat. Thank you.

One of the persons took my form in hand and asked.

So Joshi tell me, why have you taken up MBA Marketing after Engineering?

Me: Sir when I was on the verge of completion of Engineering, I realized that if I pursue post graduation in management after Engineering, it would help me in getting more diversified job profiles and it would also help me grow faster in my professional life.

Interviewer: Okay. But why did you opt for Marketing?

Me: Sir, I have fair communication skills and public dealing skills. Also Marketing is an ever green filed which helps you in almost every sector you work with. Therefore I chose Marketing as my specialization in post graduation.

Interviewer: Did you take up any assignments after Engineering? Come on, you must have got some good opportunities after Engineering.

Me: Sir, I was very sure about pursuing PG in Management. Therefore I focused on its entrance exams and did not go for technical jobs.

Interviewer: But you've mentioned in your form that you've worked with a manufacturing firm.

Me: Sir, I joined that job after MBA, not after BE. It wasn't a technical job and I was into Marketing Communication department.

Interviewer: Oh yes yes. Sorry I misunderstood. So, what do you do at present?

Me: At present, I have been working with Saurashtra Gramin Bank, which is an RRB sponsored by State Bank of India as a Probationary Officer.

Interviewer: So you're already a bank PO. Since how long have you been working with RRB?

Me: Sir, I have recently joined RRB. I am about to complete 2 months.

Interviewer: Since you are a PO since 2 months, you must be aware about how a bank works. I mean, its basic functions.

Me: Yes Sir, I have tried to learn as much as possible about bank's general functions in these two months.

Interviewer: But dear, you are already into JMGS Scale - 1. What is the rationale in joining UBI?

Me: Sir as you know, RRBs are the extended arms of various nationalized banks. They dedicatedly work for agriculture financing and to accomplish the vision of financial inclusion. They are good institutions to work with, but they have limited reach. Also, every corporate entity is an assimilation of the knowledge of all the people who work for it. So the bigger this system, the bigger will be this knowledge bank and the better will be my chances for learning and growth. Also, a nationalized bank can give me national exposure which I cannot expect working with an RRB. (Then I made a humorous comment) - Sir working with RRB is like playing in Ranji Trophy and working with a nationalized bank like UBI is like playing for national team. Both are different.

All 3 broke into laughter with this comment. (I don't know whether it was okay to make such a humorous comment, but it was spontaneous and it just happened!)

Interviewer (smiling): But Ranji Trophy is also a link to the national team, and you are anyway being paid the same as a national team player.

Me: Sir, playing for national team is a matter of privilege, which is beyond monetary benefits.

Interviewer: Alright. Now tell me about the advances portfolio of an RRB?

Me: Sir as I said earlier, RRBs work for agriculture financing and to accomplish financial inclusion. Their advances portfolio comprises mostly of advances for - crops, tractors, minor irrigation, self help groups etc. But tehsil and district level branches have a fair amount of business in regular loans like - home loans, vehicle loans, educational loans etc. But still the major focus is on agriculture financing.

Interviewer: How many RRBs does SBI have?

Me: I am not very sure Sir, but SBI owns around 12-15 RRBs in various states. In Gujarat, they have only 1 RRB.

Interviewer: Okay, so they have 1 RRB in Gujarat, hmmm. What is the share-holding pattern of an RRB?

Me: (Confidently) Sir every RRB has 50% stake of central govt, 15% stake of state govt and 35% stake of its sponsor bank.

Interviewer: Hmmmm. Which is the best quality a leader should possess?

Me: Sir leadership, whether formal or informal, is all about taking charge. Coming forward and owing the responsibility. So I think for any leader, having the attitude to 'take the charge' and 'owing the responsibility' is the biggest quality. Apart from this, a leader has to have influential qualities to get the objectives met.

Interviewer: Have you, in your life ever shown such qualities?

Me: Yes Sir, at the time of starting my job with RRB....he cut me in between and asked,

Interviewer: Not in RRB, tell me where else have you shown these leadership skills which you just talked about.

Me: Sir I have shown such skills in my family affairs on quite a few occasions. Also when I was an MBA student, we were supposed to make a group and present various topics. It used to be a group exercise, but I used to come forward and take the informal charge of the entire group and ensured all team members' efforts remained streamlined and we met our objectives.

Interviewer: Okay. Now tell me which newspaper do you read?

Me: Sir I regularly read Times of India. And I read Economic Times as well, but not every day.

Interviewer: Times of India? Really? Why not other newspapers?

Me: Sir I personally prefer reading The Hindu. But I live in a very small town where it is very difficult to find Times of India even. We do not get delivery of The Hindu so it is not possible for me to read it. But I read its articles from internet.

Interviewer: Oh I see. Yes, The Hindu doesn't have wide distribution network. Anyway, tell me one major recent news you've read.

Me: Sir 3 BJP ministers of Karnataka have resigned today since they were caught watching obscene video clips on their cell phones during legislative assembly. These are the headlines of today's newspaper as well.

Interviewer: Okay. So what do you do at RRB at present?

Me: Sir, we 7 probationers have been assigned a special project initially. Actually SBI has given our RRB Bancs software which they use for CBS. The migration from old system to new system took place few months back but because of this migration, there have been some mismatches of data. Our objective is to correctly calculate all the parameters and ensure the accounts migrated are correct.

Interviewer: What is the NPA level in your bank?

Me: Sir I am not 100% sure, but it is around 1%. (in actual, it is around 0.8% so I could give a close answer somehow!)

Interviewer: Oh I see. Can you tell me which sectors come under infrastructure financing?

Me: Sir, power sector comes under infrastructure financing.

Interviewer: Then? Go on please.

Me: (thought a bit), transportation sector also comes under infrastructure financing.

Interviewer: Anything else?

Me: Not being able to recollect more Sir.

Interviewer: Its okay, its okay.

Then he signaled other members if they want to ask me anything. They said no.

Then he said, Okay Joshi, you may leave now.

I thanked everyone and left.

IBPS PO Cut Offs : Cut Offs Process disclosed by IBPS

IBPS has now clarified about how the cut off marks for the PO Exam are decided by them. They have come up with a detailed note about IBPS PO Cut Off Marks guidelines. For aspirants preparing for bank exams we are providing here the mechanism followed by the IBPS.

Process for Arriving at Standard Scores in the Common Written Examination

Number of questions answered correctly by a candidate in each objective test is considered for arriving at the Corrected Score after applying penalty for wrong answers.
The Corrected Scores so obtained by a candidate are made equivalent to take care of the minor difference in difficulty level, if any, in each of the objective tests held in different sessions to arrive at the Equated Scores*.
The Equated Scores so obtained are standardized** to arrive at Final Standard Score with a minimum ‘0’ and maximum ‘50’ by following Linear Transformation Method.

This procedure is followed for each of the tests.

* Scores obtained by candidates on any test are equated to the base form by considering the distribution of scores of all the forms.

** The equated scores in each test are scaled to Standardized Scores with Mean 25 and Standard Deviation 5

Maximum marks and Cutoffs in Each Objective Test and Descriptive Paper

Maximum Marks in Each Section: 50

Qualifying Marks for General Category: 24 in each section

Qualifying Marks for reserved categories: 21 in each section

Process for Arriving at Total Weighted Standard Score in the Common Written Examination

Total Weighted Score = Standard Scores obtained in (Reasoning + Quantitative Aptitude + General Awareness+ Computer Knowledge + ½ English Language + ½ Descriptive Paper)

To put this in simple words the weight of English Language and Descriptive Paper will be 50% only

Many banks have already announced their recruitment program for Bank PO or IBPS PO based on the IBPS Score Cards. For aspirants preparing for IBPS PO or Bank Exams, it’s a season of interviews & Group Discussions (in a few banks). In this post we are providing a few more interview questions and methods of answering them. If you go through all these posts and prepare in the manner as told by our experts, you may be able to perform much better in your interviews.

Today we will discuss few more likely questions and methods of answering them.

Question 1: You are an Engineering graduate (or any other different field such as MBA, BCA, MCA etc.), why you want to enter into banking sector?

Answer: This is a quite common question as you may be from a different field and now appearing in Bank Exams Interviews, in such scenario this kind of question is very much likely. You can reply it a deft manner by saying that although you are from a different field but you have always regarded career of a Bank Officer as a very prestigious one & if given a chance you would like to enter in to banking sector. Moreover you may be from a different field but you can still apply the knowledge you have acquired (give some example, for e.g. Banks are now a days very much techno savy hence the knowledge you have acquired in engineering, MCA etc can easily be applied). You can also say that banking is one of the fastest growing sectors hence you too would like to be part of that growth and would like to take your career to new levels by joining as a Bank Probationary Officer.

Question 2: By going through your bio data we observe that you have completed your graduation 3-4 years back, what you have been doing for last 4 years (or as the case may be)?

Answer: You can reply by telling the board about factual position, for e.g. if you have worked somewhere you can tell them about that, if you have worked somewhere but you are not having proof of that than you can say that you have tried your hand in a few jobs but they were not of your liking hence after some time you have decided for preparation of Bank Exams. You can tell them that you have been preparing for bank exams for last few years (as the case may be) and are determined to get success and to become a Probationary Officer.

So these are our suggestions for these types of questions, you can now prepare your structured answer as per your bio data. Your answers should be concise and to the point. You can always have different answers for the same question but based on our experience we have suggested you how such questions should be answered. It is likely that a few more banks will also conduct group discussions as a part of selection process. As always we will urge you to prepare well in advance for your bank exams. We are providing here you some useful information about group discussions.

What is a Group Discussion? The term suggests a discussion among a group of persons. The group will have 8 to 10 members who will express their views freely, frankly in a friendly manner, on a topic, which will be given by the conductors of the discussion. Within a time limit of 20 to 30 minutes, the abilities of the members of the group are measured.

Do’s & Don’t of a Group Discussion

Do’s

ü Make original points & support them by substantial reasoning.

ü Listen to the other participants actively & carefully.

ü Whatever you say, must be with a logical flow, validate it with an example as far as possible.

ü Make only accurate statements.

ü Be an active and dynamic participant by listening.

ü Talk with confidence and self-assurance.

Don’t

ü Being shy /nervous / keeping isolated from G.D.

ü Interrupting another participant before his arguments are over.

ü Don’t make fun of any participant even if his arguments are funny.

ü Don’t engage yourself in sub-group conversation.

ü Don’t repeat and use irrelevant materials.

Body Language

Positive body language is extremely important in Group Discussion. Here are a few suggestions.

ü Eye expressions are very important. Don’t look here and there & have direct eye contact while talking with somebody. If you are looking around desperately with shifty eyes it also indicates you are looking for help and cues to speak something.

ü Hand & toes movement also indicates your confidence level. Drumming the hand & itching on your nose show your nervousness. Toes if pointed to the ground indicate anxiety.

ü Wear comfortable clothes and be yourself. If the interiors are not air conditioned, sweating can be uncomfortable and also unsightly. Wear a good pair of shoes and socks.

ü Do not cross your arms or your legs. Be natural and sincere is the final key to success.

IBPS Clerk Result is about to be declared as per the sources of bankexams.org, result is almost ready and final work is going on. As you all know that Recruitment Exercise for Clerical cadre for 19 Public Sector Banks was conducted by IBPS in three phases. It was a huge recruitment exercise as lacs of aspirants appeared in this exam. Aspirants are waiting for the result eagerly.

Question: Tell us something about yourself?

How to Answer: You should start with your personal details like your name and the place where you belong, than you should give a brief about your family, mainly about your parents. You should continue with your answer telling about your qualifications mainly about graduation and professional qualification. If you have worked earlier with any other organization, you should also tell the board about that. You should keep your answer to a maximum of 2-3 minutes.

You should try to cover four topics: early years, education, family, and recent career experience. Since normally this question is among the opening questions of the interview hence if you can start well than you will not only gain the confidence but also create a good opening impression on the board. Question: Why you want to enter in to banking sector?

How to Answer: You can tell the board that Banking Sector is growing at a rapid pace and provides huge opportunities for learning as well as for career growth. The job of a Bank PO not only gives us recognition in the society it also provides us opportunities for learning, as banking is a vast industry and those willing to learn have a lot of scope for that.

You can also say that it was your dream from the very beginning to become a Bank Officer hence you have chosen banking as your career. You can also say that you feel that with the knowledge and aptitude you are having, you can contribute well in this sector hence you have chosen banking as your career.

Question: You have got a good IBPS Score, what will happen if you get selection in another bank? Will you leave our job in case get selection in other bank or somewhere else?

How to Answer: This is also a very common question but can be answered smartly; you can tell the board that there is no point of leaving the job if you get selection in any other public sector bank as all banks are almost same as far as career growth & job profile are concerned. You can also tell the board that you are looking for an established career and willing to learn. You will not leave the job for small monetary benefits & for petty reasons. You should try to convince them that unless there is a substantial reason or career growth, you are not going to leave the job.

Before appearing, in any interview you should bear in mind that you need to attain minimum qualifying marks in the interview, only than you will qualify the final exams. Qualifying the interview should not be a difficult task for any decent aspirant because there are a very few cases of candidates disqualifying in banking interviews. But still you have to perform well to qualify the interview.

Your IBPS score is the key; if you have a high score naturally your chances of getting final selection become very high, but at the same time those who are having low IBPS score can change the scenario by scoring high marks in the interview because there is good weight for the interview.
