What is a Group Discussion? The term suggests a discussion among a group of persons. The group will have 8 to 10 members who will express their views freely, frankly in a friendly manner, on a topic, which will be given by the conductors of the discussion. Within a time limit of 20 to 30 minutes, the abilities of the members of the group are measured.

Do’s & Don’t of a Group Discussion

Do’s

ü Make original points & support them by substantial reasoning.

ü Listen to the other participants actively & carefully.

ü Whatever you say, must be with a logical flow, validate it with an example as far as possible.

ü Make only accurate statements.

ü Be an active and dynamic participant by listening.

ü Talk with confidence and self-assurance.

Don’t

ü Being shy /nervous / keeping isolated from G.D.

ü Interrupting another participant before his arguments are over.

ü Don’t make fun of any participant even if his arguments are funny.

ü Don’t engage yourself in sub-group conversation.

ü Don’t repeat and use irrelevant materials.

Body Language

Positive body language is extremely important in Group Discussion. Here are a few suggestions.

ü Eye expressions are very important. Don’t look here and there & have direct eye contact while talking with somebody. If you are looking around desperately with shifty eyes it also indicates you are looking for help and cues to speak something.

ü Hand & toes movement also indicates your confidence level. Drumming the hand & itching on your nose show your nervousness. Toes if pointed to the ground indicate anxiety.

ü Wear comfortable clothes and be yourself. If the interiors are not air conditioned, sweating can be uncomfortable and also unsightly. Wear a good pair of shoes and socks.

ü Do not cross your arms or your legs. Be natural and sincere is the final key to success.

Question: Tell us something about yourself?

Question: You have got a good IBPS Score, what will happen if you get selection in another bank? Will you leave our job in case get selection in other bank or somewhere else?

How to Answer: This is also a very common question but can be answered smartly; you can tell the board that there is no point of leaving the job if you get selection in any other public sector bank as all banks are almost same as far as career growth & job profile are concerned. You can also tell the board that you are looking for an established career and willing to learn. You will not leave the job for small monetary benefits & for petty reasons. You should try to convince them that unless there is a substantial reason or career growth, you are not going to leave the job.

We have earlier discussed about the salary of a Bank Probationary Officer. Since result of IBPS Clerk Exam is on cards and many visitors are asking about the salary and perks of a Bank Clerk hence we are providing here details of salary & perks of a bank clerk at the time of joining.

So here I am providing details of not only salary structure but also about other perks which you will get after becoming a Bank Clerk, the starting basic salary would be Rs. 7200/- for non graduates and for graduates it would be Rs. 8000/-, you will also get Dearness Allowance which is presently about 60% of the basic salary, apart from Basic + D.A. you will also get HRA, Transport Allowance, Special pay etc.

Apart from this salary you are also entitled for few more perks such as petrol allowance, officiating allowance (after confirmation, if you perform duties in next clerical cadre). The rates of perks differ from bank to bank however the lump sum rupee value of all such perks is about Rs. 1500/- to Rs. 2000/- in public sector banks.

You will be in the pay scale of Rs. 7200/- – Rs. 19300/-. Starting salary would be in the range of Rs. 13500/- to Rs. 17000/- depending upon place of posting, bank & qualification. You will also be entitled for two more increments if you complete your CAIIB after joining. Now a days career track of the newly joined clerks are quite fast therefore even though starting salary may appear a little bit low still in a period of 3-4 years you can get much higher salary. In this article I am going to tell you what are the roles and responsibilities of a bank clerk and how they should work in a bank to get faster promotions & career growth:

Roles & responsibilities: Generally job of clerk was considered to be a 10 to 5 job with a fixed job routine. This is still very much true but only to a certain extent; in the changing scenario of banking industry, jobs & roles of clerks are also changing. Now-a-days banks are looking for people who can build the image of bank. Hence banks are looking for people who are having good verbal as well as written communication skills, good knowledge of computers & candidates who are well behaved and polite in their manners. Role of clerks has become very crucial as most of the time they are sitting on front counters and are carrying the image of the bank with their work style. Gone are the days when we were having mostly “Sarkari Babu” type people sitting on the front counters and working as per their will. As far as work is concerned, clerks can be assigned any banking related work, most of the time related to front counters such as a “Single Window Operator”, as a “Teller” on receipt or payment of cash counters or on counters such as payment of cheques, FDR & draft issue etc.

Career Progression: Those who have joined as a clerk can very quickly change track of their career as most of the banks are now providing opportunities to clerks to get promotion into Officer Cadre just after 3-4 years of their joining. Once they get promoted they are at par with any other officer of the bank and get all allowances & perks as per their cadre.

What should be the right approach towards work: It is very important for those who are working in PSBs as clerk, to have the right approach & attitude, if they are looking for progress in their career. Most of the time, I have seen that even the newly recruited clerks are having wrong approach towards their jobs and they too begun to behave like their older counterparts, remember this approach is not going to help as banks are not looking for such candidates. Those who are looking for career progression should understand that a good positive attitude towards work and delivery of excellent customer service will help them to good marks in their annual appraisals, which in turn would help in their promotions. Another important thing which I want to highlight here that in banks the image of the employees is also very important and most of the time Management is well aware of the image of a good or bad employee, hence it is very important for all of you to carry a very good image in your organization.
