With the show coming to an end, the 2012 Grammy Awards have named the year’s big winners during a fun-filled Staples Center ceremony on Sunday night (February 12).

Taking home the top prize and a total of six trophies was Adele, while other big winners included the Foo Fighters, Kanye West and Taylor Swift.

With viewers being led through the crowning of category picks, fans were also treated to dazzling performances by the likes of Rihanna with Coldplay, Chris Brown, Tony Bennett and Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry and an exorcism at the hands of Nicki Minaj.

Remembering the fallen music icons, Jennifer Hudson offered up a stirring tribute to recently departed singer Whitney Houston while Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt teamed up for a song in honor of the great Etta James.

Whitney Houston dead at 48, on eve of Grammys

LOS ANGELES: Grammy-winning pop legend and actress Whitney Houston was found dead Saturday in Beverly Hills, police said. She was 48.

The shock news came as the music industry gathered in Los Angeles for the annual Grammy awards show on Sunday, and a few hours ahead of a traditional pre-Grammys dinner in the hotel where Houston died.

Musicians took to Twitter to pay tribute to the singer, famous for songs including "I Will Always Love You," who had led a public battle with drugs.

"Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend ... She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth," wrote Mariah Carey.

Police confirmed her death in a brief statement outside the Beverly Hilton hotel, where stars were gathering for an annual pre-Grammys dinner hosted by veteran producer Clive Davis.

"At 3:55 pm, Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at the Beverly Hilton hotel," said Mark Rosen, a police spokesman.

Rosen said police received an emergency call from someone in her entourage and found Houston on the floor of her room on the hotel's fourth floor as attempts were being made to resuscitate her.

"There were no obvious signs of criminal intent at this time, and it is being investigated by the Beverly Hills police department," the police spokesman added.

The cause of death was not immediately known.

A mobile crime laboratory and a number of police cars were stationed outside the hotel, while inside guests watched live television coverage about Houston's death in the bar and lobby areas.

Condolences poured in on Twitter from shocked fans and from the famous, as
sadness over the news spread through the entertainment world.

"We have lost another legend. Love and prayers to Whitney's family. She will be missed," said Christina Aguilera, while Rihanna wrote simply: "No words! Just tears #DearWhitney."

Grammys organizers the Recording Academy are scrambling to include some kind of tribute to Houston in Sunday's show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, according to CNN.

With a ferociously powerful voice and a dazzling range, Houston achieved stardom as a pop-soul singer known as "The Voice" and the "Queen of Pop."

She also appeared in hit movies like "Waiting to Exhale" and "The Bodyguard."

From a musical family that included mother Cissy Houston, a gospel star, and Dionne Warwick, her cousin, Whitney Houston started out as a teen model and then made a dazzling segue to music.

Her hits included "How Will I Know," "Saving all My Love for You," and "I
Will Always Love You."

Houston's trove of six Grammy awards included one for record of the year -- for a soaring cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," and another for album of the year for "The Bodyguard."

Houston, who grew up in New Jersey, was also a supporter of the anti-apartheid movement and South Africa's Nelson Mandela, on whose behalf she campaigned during his imprisonment.

She struggled with substance abuse, which took a toll on her health and career.

Houston has sold more than 170 million records worldwide but suffered a major career setback after admitting drug use during an abusive relationship with ex-husband Bobby Brown.

Brown was one of the hottest rhythm and blues singers in the late 1980s and early 90s, but became better known as the husband of Houston and for his frequent brushes with drugs and the law.

The pair, who were divorced in 2007, starred in a television reality series, "Being Bobby Brown," that featured their marriage, warts and all. They have a daughter Bobbi Kristina.

Brown was detained in Atlanta in 1993 for lewd conduct and for brawling in 1995. He was arrested for drunk driving in 1996 and for alleged battery of Houston in late 2003. (AFP)

Mafioso, murderer, tackle Shakespeare in new film

BERLIN: Drug dealers, a Mafioso and a murderer are cast in the roles of Caesar, Brutus, Cassius and others in "Caesar Must Die," a docu-drama about inmates at a tough Italian prison who take on a Shakespeare tragedy.

The movie, which has its world premiere at the Berlin film festival on Saturday, was shot at the Rebibbia prison on the outskirts of Rome, some of it in the high security wing.

Directed by veteran Italian film makers Vittorio and Paolo Taviani, "Cesare Deve Morire" might equally be called "Shakespeare can set you free" as prisoners mentally escape the confines of their cells, at least fleetingly.

And Shakespeare's themes of power, corruption, murder and vengeance in "Julius Caesar" naturally resonate with performers who are serving sentences ranging from 14 years to life.

"They were in their world but at the same time they had lines of Shakespeare which talked about murder and betrayal ... about power and bosses, and we thought may be we can include their realities in the play," Vittorio told reporters in Berlin.

"They lived through personal dramas too and we could link this to the dramatic life of Brutus and Mark Antony, for example, and they were able to put themselves in the shoes of the characters of Shakespeare."

Caesar Must Die is one of several movies at this year's Berlin festival which deal with captivity, and judging by warm applause after a press screening, it could prove popular with the critics and judges.

UNHAPPY ENDING

Though billed as a documentary, the film, shot almost entirely in black-and-white, is in fact a drama or a "play around a play." Even when prisoners depart from Shakespeare's text there is a script and elements of performance.

Nonetheless, the intensity of the actors, and extensive use of close-up facial shots, communicate the power of the play and bring it alive for modern audiences.

The downside is that when six months of rehearsal and the final show at the prison's theatre are over, the reality of life behind bars sinks quickly back in.

"Ever since I discovered art, this cell has truly become a prison," said Cosimo Rega, the inmate who played Cassius, speaking directly into a camera in his cell.

The Taviani brothers, who have been making films together for 50 years and in 1977 won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival for "Padre Padrone," first got the idea for the film from a friend who attended a staging at the prison.

She told them that the performance of a staging of Dante's "Inferno" had reduced her to tears. They too attended a play there and saw the potential for a big screen production.

The movie opens with a series of auditions, during which prisoners lay bare their emotions.

"We thought it was important to show the trauma inmates had lived through," said Vittorio. "They were feeling pain and ... it should be taken into account."

Most of the cast are still behind bars, although former Rebibbia inmate Salvatore Striano was brought back to the prison to play Brutus and is now an actor.

"These men all have to serve their sentences," Striano said. "They are all guilty of course, but they kind of asked for pardon through this play, they want to live, inside prison." (Reuters)

MUMBAI: Bolywood star Amitabh Bachchan 's condition is stable has he passed through a successful abdominal surgery on Saturday here at Sevenhills hospital.

The superstar underwent knife for abdominal pain. Big B has a history of abdominal complications after his accident on the sets of Coolie in 1982.

Amitabh informed his fans about the operation on Twitter. He also seeks prayers and wishes for speedy recovery post surgery.

"I wish to thank all those that have most graciously sent in their concern and greetings for a speedy recovery. Your prayers shall go a long way in bringing me back to normal and for this I am always eternally grateful," he wrote.

Spoof Nazi sci-fi film hits Berlin despite hurdles

BERLIN: Finnish sci-fi spoof "Iron Sky" takes viewers on a wild ride to the dark side of the moon, where Nazis who survived World War Two have built a military base and are planning a "Meteorblitzkrieg" on planet Earth.

Black US astronaut James Washington, on a mission to boost the flagging electoral fortunes of a US president clearly modelled on Sarah Palin, stumbles across the huge Swastika-shaped complex and is captured.

His madcap adventures, set in 2018, see his skin turned white by an Albert Einstein look alike, send him back to Earth where he is greeted as a lunatic and finally to the moon again to try to save the day, and his skin.

The movie has its official world premiere at the Berlin film festival where it screened out of competition on Saturday.

Amidst a typically dark and gritty selection of films at this year's festival, Iron Sky has been among the most talked about by the thousands of journalists covering the event.

Producer Tero Kaukomaa said a large part of the funding came from "crowd-sourcing" either on the Internet or through selling merchandise to fans.

Of the 7.5 million euro ($9.89 million) budget, almost 1million was raised that way, he said, in turn helping to bring more mainstream investors on board.

Director Timo Vuorensola said the original idea for the oddball plotline was born in a Finnish sauna "as all good things from Finland usually are".

He also directed the 2005 picture "Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning", another sci-fi comedy funded by fans which went onto become a cult hit.

German producer Oliver Damian admitted there had been some resistance within Germany to making a film that made light of the Nazis.

"Over the years we needed to organise financing and we had a lot of obstacles to overcome in Germany because a lot of people were very critical of the project," he told reporters after a packed press screening.

"We (younger Germans) have a different past and we are fully aware of this. I think you can make a dark comedy (about Nazis). "The film is supposed to be fun. This is important. At the end of the day we found funding partners in Germany and the film will be released here in April so we found people who believed in the project here as well."

Actor Christopher Kirby, who plays Washington, did not believe it was a genuine script when he was first approached to consider the part. He stars alongside Julia Dietze, who portrays the Nazi ideologue Renate Richter.

Together, the two characters become involved in a life-or-death mission to halt the Nazi onslaught, in particular its secret weapon, the massive Gotterdammerung spaceship.

Meanwhile on Earth, the US president sees an opportunity to stay in the White House for another term.

"It's wonderful," she crows. "I'm a war-time president. I thought I was going to have to bomb Australia or something."

Her response is to dispatch her own secret weapon, the USS George W. Bush spaceship. (Reuters)

Parminder Nagra splits from husband

Actress Parminder Nagra, of "Bend It Like Beckham" fame, has filed for divorce from her photographer husband James Stenson.

The actress, who currently stars in the FOX series "Alcatraz", filed papers in Los Angeles Super Court, citing "irreconcilable differences".

The couple began dating in 2002 and married seven years later in two ceremonies: one civil and one traditional Sikh ceremony. They have a two-year-old son, Kai David Singh.

The 36-year-old British actress of Indian descent has appealed that she be awarded primary physical custody of their son and that Stenson be granted visitation rights. She has also asked the court to deny Stenson any spousal support, reports usmagazine.com.

Among the many smart lines in this film, one is when the girl tells the boy, 'Tum perfect average ho, na kuch zyada na kuch kam karte ho.' Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu can be summed up in that line too. Na kuch zyada na kuch kam ¦a near perfect rom-com.

Breezy and delightful, this film gets your attention from start to finish, keeps you smiling most part of it and yes, it reminds you of a slice of your own life.

Rahul (Imran Khan) has been struggling all his life to conform to the standards of his strict and ambitious father (Boman Irani) and a shallow socialite kind of a mother (Ratna Pathak).

He is a 25-year-old highly strung up virgin. Rahul meets Riana (Kareena Kapoor) in Las Vegas and they end up getting married to each other. Riana is all that Rahul is not. And the fun begins.

There are some truly funny scenes in the film, which might not get you howling in laughter, but they get you to smile, while watching it and much after you have watched the film. Like right now I am smiling as I remember a really funny scene where Rahul is being interviewed by two Japanese men. The kind of humour that exists in rare Hindi films.

Kareena Kapoor as Riana Briganza is outstanding.

While her character is endearing, it could have been a lot similar to her Geet in Jab We Met and any lesser actress would have easily copied the same act. But Kareena took it to another level and if I may add, made it a lot more sensitive. With her performance and by looking as gorgeous as she did, Kareena makes sure that you find it difficult to take your eyes off her.

Imran Khan has done a pretty decent job, and manages to convince you of the trauma of being a helpless fellow in a world full of aggressive people.

Apart from a sensitive script and solid direction, what also works for this film is the casting. Refreshingly, the film has not fallen over itself to get known stars to play character roles, just to make the film shinier. Instead, it has some unknown gems that not only fit their individual characters perfectly but together make it all a delightful experience.

A special mention has to be made of Ratna Pathak. In what seems like an extension of her role in Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, Pathak is fantastic.

The climax is brave, unpredictable and real. Go watch! Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a small packet of joy.

The actress was wearing her black leotard that was visible underneath the stripey off-the-shoulder jumper she wore which she teamed with a pair of bootcut jeans. When the Batman Begins star later emerged, she had tied her long hair back after working up a sweat, and was grinning from ear to ear. Jack and Jill, the new Adam Sandler comedy, was released in November last year and has been slated by critics.

Katie plays Sandler’s wife Erin in the film, which also stars Al Pacino and David Spade, but no doubt it’s a role that she would rather forget about now. Perhaps the actress has taken up the dancing class in order to pass the time, as she currently has no upcoming films in the pipeline and with her five-year-old daughter Suri at school, her days must be rather quiet.

Naomi Watts to play Princess Diana in biopic

LONDON: British-Australian actress Naomi Watts is to play Britain's Princess Diana in a movie about the late royal's final two years, filmmakers have announced.

Producers said "Caught in Flight" would focus on a period when Diana, the former wife of heir to the throne Prince Charles, found "true personal happiness" shortly before her death in a 1997 car crash in Paris.

Diana wed Charles in a glittering ceremony in 1981, but the unhappy marriage ended in 1996. Charles wed his long-time companion Camilla Parker-Bowles in 2005.

Watts, who won widespread critical acclaim for her role as Betty Elms in the 2001 psychological thriller "Mulholland Drive", said it was an honour to be able to play the "iconic role" of the woman known as the "People's Princess".

"Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen," said the 44-year-old, who also won an Oscar nomination for her role as a recovering drug addict in "21 Grams".

The movie about the Princess of Wales, who was just 36 when she died, will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, best known for his epic 2004 film "Downfall" about the final days of Hitler. (AFP)

No more action-packed movies, says Kareena Kapoor, who has done daredevil stunts in the spy thriller "Agent Vinod", which is her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan's home production.

"I don't enjoy action films. I don't like action scenes and stunts. I like conversational and romantic films like 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu'. I am scared of action and gun shots. Saif used to get angry and say 'you can't do that'" said Kareena.

"No more action films for me, no more harness and no stunts at all! After 'Agent Vinod', I enjoy song and dance sequences much more," she added.

"Agent Vinod" is slated for a March 23 release.

Rihanna also is among the stars performing live at the event, and rumors have flown among fans and celebrity watchers in recent weeks that the pair may be secretly dating again -- speculation Brown's representatives have dismissed.

Grammy organizers said on Tuesday that Brown, who has three nominations including best R&B singer for his album "F.A.M.E.", had been added to the line-up for the February 12 awards show in Los Angeles.

They said Brown will join Foo Fighters, Lil Wayne, David Guetta and deadmau 5 for a performance highlighting dance and electronica music for the first time on the Grammy Awards show stage.

Organizers said last month that Rihanna, who has four nominations including album of the year for "Loud", will sing with Coldplay on the Grammy stage.

Brown, 22, has skipped the Grammys since launching a violent attack on Rihanna in 2009, leaving her battered and bruised and Brown in the custody of police.

Brown publicly apologized, admitted to criminal assault in court. A judge sentenced him to five years probation, six months community service and anger management counseling. But his clean-cut image took a major blow.

Rihanna's career on the other hand soared, and she scored hits with songs like "Man Down" and "Love the Way You Lie", which dealt with violence against women.

The pair appeared to have gone their separate ways but in recent months, speculation buzzed that they had reunited after they were spotted at the same Los Angeles nightclub and put out a series of cryptic messages on Twitter.

The glittering 12-minute performance at Lucas Oil Stadium featuring several guest stars had legions of fans racing to Twitter to give their thumbs-up, with some going so far as to declare it one of the best in Super Bowl history.

'Chronicle' wins tight box office race

LOS ANGELES: Teen boys with superpowers helped lift the movie box office to unexpected heights over Super Bowl weekend as thriller "Chronicle" edged "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe's haunted house movie "The Woman in Black."

"Chronicle" brought in an estimated $22.0 million from U.S. and Canadian theaters, studio estimates released on Sunday showed. The movie with largely unknown actors finished just ahead of Radcliffe's "Woman in Black," which took in an estimated $21.0 million.

Both performances surpassed projections from studio executives, who had expected weaker sales against competition from Sunday's Super Bowl football championship. The tallies include actual ticket receipts for Friday and Saturday plus estimates for Sunday at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters.

The appearance of young moviegoers, who had shunned some recent films targeted to them, boosted the top two films.

"The teen audience seems to be coming back to movies again. There was serious worry they were fading," said John Davis, who produced "Chronicle."

The movie tells the story of three teenage boys who develop superpowers and find they have a dark side. People under age 25 made up 61 percent of the movie's audience, distributor 20th Century Fox said. Fifty-five percent was males.

The studio produced "Chronicle" for about $12 million and had forecast debut weekend sales below $10 million.

Young moviegoers also propelled "Woman in Black" well past studio expectations of around $10 million. Fifty-seven percent of filmgoers were under age 25, and 59 percent were females.

The movie was Radcliffe's first since the blockbuster "Harry Potter" franchise ended last summer. The film attracted Radcliffe's young female fans plus "an audience that likes to be scared but not grossed out," said Steven Friedlander, executive vice president of theatrical distribution for CBS Films, the unit of CBS Corp that released the movie.

"Woman in Black" scored as the biggest debut weekend ever for CBS Films, which has struggled with its five earlier movies. The studio's biggest previous opening was a $12.2 million debut for "The Back-up Plan."

With "Woman in Black," the studio acquired domestic distribution rights for $3 million and spent about $15 million on marketing.

Elsewhere this weekend, Liam Neeson thriller "The Grey," dropped to third place with $9.5 million. The movie ranked No. 1 last weekend and has brought in $34.8 million domestically after two weekends in theaters.

SUPER BOWL ALTERNATIVES

Total ticket sales outpaced the same weekend last year by nearly 37 percent despite competition from the Super Bowl, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com. Sales for all films reached $119 million.

"Big Miracle," a drama based on the true story of a whale rescue, aimed to offer a non-football alternative to young women and girls. The movie finished the weekend in fourth place with $8.5 million domestically, in line with studio forecasts.

The movie starring Drew Barrymore and "The Office" actor John Krasinski cost less than $40 million to produce.

In fifth place, vampire and werewolf sequel "Underworld: Awakening" starring Kate Beckinsale took in $5.6 million at domestic theaters. To date, the movie's worldwide sales stand at $108.3 million.

The couple, who had been dating for eight years, tied the knot in a traditional Indian ceremony at Mumbai's Grand Hyatt hotel, NDTV reports.

The actor posted a wedding photo on Twitter with the caption "MR & MRS DESHMUKH."

Shahid Kapoor was the first person to announce the wedding of his Chance Pe Dance co-star, saying: "And G is married !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable .:)."

The wedding, held in traditional Marathi style, was attended by personalities from both the film industry and the political world, including Sharad Pawar, Prithviraj Chavan, Praful Patel, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Ajay Devgn and Kajol.

Director Raj Kanwar dies, aged 50

Bollywood director Raj Kanwar has died at the age of 50.

He passed away in Singapore after travelling there for a kidney transplant.

Kanwar is most famous for launching the career of Shah Rukh Khan in 1992 with the film Deewana. The actor led the tributes on Twitter, writing: "My friend Raj Kanwarji passed away. The impermanence of life, makes one feel so helpless. May his soul rest in peace. Aisi Deewangi... miss u sir."

The director also signed up Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra for their first Bollywood endeavour, 2003's Andaaz.

"Saddens me so much, my first director Raj Kanwar passed away..RIP Rajji..You believed in me when even I didn't. Andaaz taught me everything I know," Chopra tweeted.

Boney M's 'Rasputin' remade for Bollywood for 'Agent Vinod'

Bollywood music director Pritam Chakraborty has acquired the official remake rights to Boney M's 'Rasputin'.

The 1978 disco hit will feature on the soundtrack to the Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Agent Vinod.

"The song 'Rasputin' by legendary band Boney M has been an all time favourite. We are delighted that this song will now get a fresh lease of life," Shridhar Subramaniam, the President of India and Middle East, Sony Music, told Mumbai Mirror.

"This Indian adaptation will now be a part of the much-awaited Agent Vinod. We are confident that this adaptation will top the charts just like the original did."

Pritam explained that the track 'I'll Do The Talking', draws from a number of different sources in addition to the disco song.

The composer said: "We have taken the rights of Boney M's 'Rasputin'. However, our song is based more on the Serbian folk song 'Ruse Kose Curo Imas'.

"Even 'Rasputin' draws inspiration from this song. A Turkish folk song 'Uskudar'a Gider Iken' also has the same melody. Famous Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's song 'Shukno Paatar Noopur Paaye' is also based on this folk tune."

I would not mind doing Bollywood

Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he would be happy to work in the Bollywood film industry.

The star told NDTV that if the right script came along he would be interested in acting in an Indian production.

"Maybe if there is a good script and a good, interesting director, then - I mean I worked already all over the world - I would not mind working in India," he stated.

The actor, who is currently on a trip to the country, drew comparisons between the number of movies Bollywood makes each year compared to the US film industry.

"What's amazing about India is that they have an extraordinary movie industry. They do over 700 movies a year. I mean I don't think there was ever a year when America did 700 movies. It is really amazing if you think about it," he added.

Schwarzenegger's The Expendables co-star Sylvester Stallone previously featured in the Hindi release Kambakkht Ishq.

Gali Gali Chor Hai ( Movie Review)

While credit must be given to writer-director Rumy Jaffery for focusing on the issue of corruption noble intentions don’t necessarily make a notable work of art. Certainly Gali Gali Chor Hai(GGCH) must have sounded amusing and topical on paper.It is a savagely stinging satire on the harassment of the average law-abiding middleclass man, played with arresting earnestness by Akshaye Khanna, in the hands of various touts, middlemen, law enforcers, goons and politicians all of whom infest the tranquil city of Bhopal with the destructive determination of termites eating into a ‘system’ that has long ceased to be if any consequence , moral or ethical.

While the script has some sparkling vignettes and scenes taken from the portrait of a common man trapped in the wheels of a fluctuating fortune, the treatment of the theme of corruption is staid, prosaic uninspiring and frequently bland. The screenplay unfolds in segments and episodes that could belong to a long-running government-sponsored serial on Doordarshan, made with the express purpose of cleaning the bureaucracy’s image.

Lamentably, for all his sincerity, Akshay Khanna’s Bharat remains clueless about what the script hopes to achieve by showing the character running in and out of police stations and court premises, except to project the helplessness of the common man into a script that seeks to desperately extract creative juices out of the bourgeois desperation which has baffled, bewildered, frustrated and destroyed the under-privileged classes the world over.

Sadly the satire doesn’t evoke any empathy for the common hero of this film who is sucked into the vicious vortex of bribery and palm-greasing for no seeming reason except his political innocence.Like Shyam Benegal’s last satirical outing Well Done, Abba this film forgets to oil its joints which creak in protest each time the hero shrieks in protest.

The problem with Jaffrey’s film is its dry almost clinical treatment of the theme of corruption and the Common Man. While the ambience, characters and the plight of our hero Bharat seem authentic, the languid movement of the story suggests a far less involving sequence of events than what we set out to witness when we sat down for a film.

Don’t rub your hands in anticipation when you sit down to watch this ode to corruption.In Singham the slap sounded far more musical to the ears.Yes, there are stray amusing moments in GGCH. But by the time Bharat’s slap on the face of the ‘system’ occurs it’s a case of too little, too late.

And what on earth is that item song with Veena Malik lighting up her vital statistics with Christmas bulbs. A symbol of the common man’s dream gone bust?

Sorry,but the original Bharat, Manoj Kumar did the anti-corruption theme much more interestingly in Roti Kapada Aur Makaan. You have to bribe the audience to watch the characters getting high on the anti-corruption theme of this film.
