In 1900, his 'Brownie' camera made it really affordable. Australia Kodak Limited, a joint venture with the two Australians, later became Kodak (Australasia) Ltd. But it is left to be seen how this will get managed

Borders, whose market value has shrunk by more than $3 billion since 1998, racked up losses by failing to adapt to shifts in how consumers shop

Well-known literary gent Jerry Seinfeld summed up the importance of bookshops. ''A bookstore,'' he said, ''is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking.'' Now the people who run them will have to do the thinking.

Australian book chains Borders, Angus & Robertson and the Whitcoulls chain of newsagencies in New Zealand have been placed into voluntary administration by its private equity owners only a day after the Borders company in the US also collapsed

The 40-year-old company “Borders” plans to close about 200 of its 642 stores over the next few weeks. All of the stores closed will be superstores. Clearance sales have begun this weekend, according to documents filed with the US Bankruptcy Court in New York. Borders said it is losing about $US2 million ($A2.01 million) a day at the stores it plans to close

According to US Borders Store Accounts revealed

According to the Chapter 11 filing, Borders had $US1.28 billion ($A1.29 billion) in assets and $US1.29 billion ($A1.3 billion) in debts as of Dec. 25.

It owes tens of millions of dollars to publishers, including $US41.1 million ($A41.37 million) to Penguin Putnam, $US36.9 million ($A37.14 million) to Hachette Book Group, $US33.8 million ($A34.02 million) to Simon & Schuster and $US33.5 million ($A33.72 million) to Random House.

Borders' rival Barnes & Noble, which has 29.8 per cent of the book market compared with Borders' 14.3 per cent according to IBIS World, has done better by adapting to e-commerce and electronic books more quickly and keeping management stable.

In other news in the US :

Movie rental chain Blockbuster Inc. may be running out of cash or might liquidate, if papers filed last night by the landlords for 38 stores are correct. Or, Blockbuster may be on the cusp of another round of store closings. Blockbuster filed an operating report for five weeks ended Jan. 1 showing a $26.1 million operating loss on total revenue of $206.5 million.

Blockbuster filed under Chapter 11 after negotiating the outline of a debt-for-equity swap with holders of 80 percent of the $630 million in 11.75 percent senior-secured notes. The plan and accompanying disclosure statement are yet to be filed.

After bankruptcy, Blockbuster rejected approximately 220 leases for stores previously closing. Yara, a Norwegian fertiliser manufacturer with a market value of about $14 billion, went to the Federal Court twice this month to stymie Mr Oswal's attempts to convert the unlisted Burrup from a public to proprietary company.

The crash of the oswal empire

Oswal has been in the news recently for other reasons as well. Mr Oswal was concerned about Australian workers eating meat while working on his property. Mr Zed said that Australia needs to have a deep, introspective look at its heart and be kind to immigrants, minorities, Indigenous people and other vulnerable groups. Mr Oswal and Yara International ASA want to develop an explosives plant in the middle of Australia’s greatest examples of petroglyphs, dating back some 30 000 years. I believe that the area Mr Oswal has chosen for his explosives plant shows scant regard for Australia’s Indigenous culture and the world’s prehistory. Read more about this Industry sources said the only slim chance of the project being revived lay with construction company Brookfield Multiplex, which has built Hilton projects in the past.

With the 30-hectare property now in the hands of receivers and up for sale, Mr Roux has filed a bankruptcy application offering his creditors less than half a cent in the dollar. According to an insolvency agreement prepared by Pitcher Partners, Mr Roux has just $25 cash in a bank account, a financed Mercedes-Benz and a painting worth $15,000, on which he also owes money.

Until his recent financial woes, Mr Roux owned a Queensland-based polo team Hyde Hill, named after the street in which he lives in Melbourne's outer south-east. Hyde Hill has competed against James Packer's Ellerston polo team over the years.

In Florida, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation took over Riverside National Bank, First Federal Bank of North Florida and AmericanFirst Bank. TD Bank Financial Group a division of Canadian company TD Bank (TD) took the deposits and nearly all the assets of each. Riverside National had $3.4 billion in assets, with First Federal at $393.3 million and AmericanFirst at $90.5 million.

Eight more banks failed last week, bringing the 2010 total to 50. Three of the failures were in Florida, and two were in California. Massachusetts, Michigan and Washington had one bank failure each.

For Lakeside Community Bank, in Sterling, Michigan, the FDIC couldn't find a buyer, so it will take over the direct deposit operation for federal payments (e.g., Social Security and VA benefits). Lakeside had assets of $53 million.

A bank can go bankrupt if its assets are less than its liabilities. This is not a problem for most of its customers since banks are FDIC insured, which means that the federal government insures bank deposits (up to $100,000). However, some people get confused about the difference between banks and other institutions that seem like banks, but are not. For example, you may have a money market account or brokerage account and it seems like a bank. But, look carefully at your statement and you should see the disclaimer "Not FDIC insured" somewhere on it.

A bank can go bankrupt just like any other institution or company can. Banks are typically less likely to go bankrupt than other risky industry company's though.

Yes, just like the Savings and Loans that went bankrupt in the early 80s. Charles Keating was buying influence in Washington which resulted in the Keating Five Scandal. It involved Democrats Dennis DeConcini, Alan Cranston, Don Riegle, and John Glenn plus Republican in name only John McCain. John Glenn and John McCain were exonerated, but the other three Democrats lost their jobs in the Senate.
Neil Bush, son of George HW Bush was a Director of Silverado S&L. Neil received a loan from Silverado, but was never found to have committed any crime.
So this turned out to be an exclusive Democrat scandal.

RECOVERY WATCH: Tracking the economy; see VIDEO

Last year, 140 banks failed in the U.S. That was the highest annual number since 1992 during the peak of the savings and loan crisis. The failures last year cost the FDIC's insurance fund more than $30 billion. Twenty-five banks failed in 2008 and three in 2007.

I am interested...
“Speedy winding up of sick enterprises, particularly small and medium ones, is an area we need to improve,” said a senior official in the ministry of corporate affairs.
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella (Twilight Saga)
The new law will shorten the legal processes involving insolvency operations of small and medium entities. The government is keen to make bankruptcy proceedings a time-bound procedure.
Under the present framework, winding up of a corporate entity is guided by provisions of the Companies Act, whereas personal insolvency is guided by other laws. The new companies bill, which is presently pending with a parliamentary standing committee, deal with only corporate insolvency.

Liquidation process in India market is fairly protracted, taking on an average 7-10 years, against 1-6 years in other countries, according to a recent survey. It often yields very little in terms of recoveries and leads to substantial waste of resources and funds.

City Pacific Financial services wind-up underway
On 25 June 2009, investors in the former City Pacific First Mortgage Fund (now known as the Pacific First Mortgage Fund) voted to remove City Pacific as responsible entity of the fund, and replace it with Trilogy Funds Management. This was followed by orders from the Federal Court of Australia to wind up City Pacific in August.

City Pacific Limited (CIY) Financial services - Company Profile
City Pacific was incorporated in 1997 as a financial services company, specialising in managing funds on behalf of investors. It first listed on the ASX in ...
www.investsmart.com.au/shares/asx/City-Pacific-CIY.as

A statement from ASIC said the decision was made after discussions with the liquidators of City Pacific to ensure the timing of the cancellation would not adversely affect investors in the City Pacific Income Fund (the remaining managed investment scheme operated by City Pacific).
Last May, the Income Fund's auditor KPMG expressed ''significant doubt about the recoverability'' of the money. Seems hard to imagine how ASIC could now do anything to ''adversely impact'' City Pacific investors.
City Pacific remains the responsible entity of a smaller managed investment scheme known as the City Pacific Income Fund. Under the Corporations Act, ASIC has the power to suspend or cancel an AFS Licence if the responsible entity holding the licence is placed into liquidation.
The group owed some students thousands of dollars.

"It would appear that at least some of the schools have traded profitably, so the question of where the money has gone is one which needs attention.GEOS is a Japanese company which owns hundreds of colleges around the world.

The pair will also be administrators of GEOS Management Services Pty Ltd and GEOS National English Academy Pty Ltd.

WILL THE GEOS COLLLEGES RE-OPEN ?

Doesn't look like there is any chance !! its under liquidation

The GEOS Group of companies under administration are:

GEOS Melbourne Pty Ltd,

GEOS Adelaide Pty Ltd,

GEOS Sydney Pty Ltd,

GEOS Cairns Pty Ltd,

GEOS Gold Coast Pty Ltd,

GEOS Perth Pty Ltd,

GEOS Brisbane Pty Ltd,

GEOS Management Services Pty Ltd and

GEOS National English Academy Pty Ltd.

The last major college group to go was Meridian. It left thousands of students stranded in November and some are still waiting to be found places in other courses.

About 500 students from a Perth English language school that closed on Friday will be offered positions in other similar schools across the city.
Alan duff almost bankrupt

The man behind the famed Once Were Warriors story that propelled New Zealand's gang culture onto the world stage is in financial ruin. Alan Duff (born October 26, 1950, Rotorua, New Zealand) is a New Zealand novelist and newspaper columnist, most well known as the author of Once Were Warriors.

Buy Once were warriors Dvd from amazon

Once were warriors author in debt
The Dominion Post questioned why Duff, now based in France, was driving a Lexus and playing golf at one of the country's most prestigious golf clubs during his summer visit home, but Duff insists he is not spending recklessly.
It is a big fall from grace for Duff who wrote the acclaimed best-selling novel Once Were Warriors, a violent love story adapted for a hard-hitting 1994 movie of the same name.
His response to his excesses
The car was on loan from a friend, the membership was cheap and he was living within his frugal means, Duff told the newspaper.

"If I was running around in flash gear and wining and dining, flying business class, fair enough. But I'm not."

He admitted it was "excruciating" owing so much money and had this message for his creditors: "I'm sorry I got into business".
"I just wasn't good enough. Everyone got paid until everything turned to custard and down I went."

The author also appears to be struggling in other ways, with the Post reporting that his two most recent books have sold just 2,746 copies between them, according to Neilsen data.
Duff said the figures were "way out".
Once Were Warriors is New Zealand author Alan Duff's bestselling first novel, first published in 1990. It tells the story of an urban Māori family, the Hekes, and portrays the reality of domestic violence. It was the basis of a 1994 film of the same name, directed by Lee Tamahori and starring Rena Owen and Temuera Morrison which made its US premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival. The novel was followed by two sequels, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? in 1997 and Jake's Long Shadow in 2002.
It not only provides employment opportunities with lucrative salaries but is also considered as land of gold. There are many reasons for the attraction of people towards Dubai, like comfortable and luxurious lifestyle, zero percent crime rate and above all tax free and handsome salaries that it offers.

Because of Booming Dubai property market and plenty of investment opportunities available in the city ,people going to Dubai for work prefer buying a home there instead of shelling most of their salary as rent.Goverment of Dubai have made certain laws on buying and selling commercial or residential property for foreign buyers Any buyer, whether resident of Dubai or foreign investor, can purchase free hold property in Dubai i.e. he can get the ownership of the property declared on his name and can sell the property according to his wish.

Also, according to Dubai government, a special category of residency visa will be granted to the person buying foreigner’s property.

Everywhere you go in Madrid, For Sale signs on half built apartment blocks dominate the Spanish capital. No surprise: The global recession has hit the country’s once booming real estate market harder than most. Property prices from Barcelona to the Balearic Islands fell 6.5% in the first quarter of 2009 alone. They are expected to drop 35% or more from their 2007 peak by the end of this year.

Apartment developer Fairfield Residential LLC Files for Bankruptcy

Assets not transferred to the operating company will be transferred to a liquidation trust that will “serve to maximize creditor recoveries,” the company said.

The case is In re: Fairfield Residential LLC, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Delaware, No. 09-14378

In other News

Bankruptcy Framework In Place For Dubai World

Dubai World officials are due to meet creditors later this month to hammer out a six-month standstill agreement for its debts.

In the event that a deal with creditors cannot be reached, the new law will allow for a structured wind down of the company and protection for its assets, the advisor said. After struggling for months to avert bankruptcy, lender CIT Group has filed for Chapter 11 protection in an attempt to restructure its debt while trying to keep badly needed loans flowing to thousands of mid-sized and small businesses.

CIT FILES FOR BANKRUPOTCY PROTECTION
AT 71 Billion its going to affect a lott of people if it goes through to bankruptcy. THE US GOVT will stand to lose about $us 2.3 Billion if CIT collapses. It invested this amount last year to save it from collapsing.

AVERT BANKRUPTCY

CIT Does a chapter 11 Filing in the US
Cit filed for Bankruptcy protection in New york after it failed a debt exchange offer to shareholders. This bankruptcy protection filing is one of the biggest after the lehman brothers , washington mutual , Worldcom and general motors .

CIT’s bankruptcy filings show $US 71 billion in finance and leasing assets against total debt of $us 64.9 Billion.

WHAT DOES CIT DO ?
CIT is the financier for about 2000 vendors that supply merchandise to more than 300,000 stores , many gearing up for the holiday Christmas shopping season.I suppose it will be a bleak Christmas season for some in the US.
WONDER WHO WILL BE THE NEXT TO FALL IN THE USA

Quartz Mountain Aerospace has filed for bankruptcy protection, listing $30.4 million in assets and $16 million in liabilities.
The former Luscombe Aircraft Company made its filing in federal court in Oklahoma City.
The company said it wants to liquidate assets to pay off creditors including local banks, the City of Altus, the Oklahoma Industrial Finance Authority and the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
