Will financial markets and banks recover in 2009?

NEW YORK: Global financial markets in 2008 experienced their worst crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Major financial institutions went bust; others were bought up on the cheap or survived only after major bailouts. Global stock markets fell by more than 50%; interest-rate spreads skyrocketed; a severe liquidity and credit crunch appeared; and many emerging-market economies staggered to the International Monetary Fund for help.

So what lies ahead in 2009? Is the worst behind us or ahead of us? To answer these questions, we must understand that a vicious circle of economic contraction and worsening financial conditions is underway. The United States will certainly experience its worst recession in decades, a deep and protracted contraction lasting about 24 months through the end of 2009. Moreover, the entire global economy will contract. There will be recession in the euro zone, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Canada, Japan, and the other advanced economies. There is also a risk of a hard landing for emerging-market economies, as trade, financial, and currency links transmit real and financial shocks to them.

In the advanced economies, recession had brought back earlier in 2008 fears of 1970’s-style stagflation (a combination of economic stagnation and inflation). But, with aggregate demand falling below growing aggregate supply, slack goods markets will lead to lower inflation as firms’ pricing power is restrained. Likewise, rising unemployment will control labor costs and wage growth. These factors, combined with sharply falling commodity prices, will cause inflation in advanced economies to ease toward the 1% level, raising concerns about deflation, not stagflation.

Deflation is dangerous as it leads to a liquidity trap: nominal policy rates cannot fall below zero, so monetary policy becomes ineffective. Falling prices mean that the real cost of capital is high and the real value of nominal debts rise, leading to further declines in consumption and investment – and thus setting in motion a vicious circle in which incomes and jobs are squeezed further, aggravating the fall in demand and prices.

As traditional monetary policy becomes ineffective, other unorthodox policies will continue to be used: policies to bail out investors, financial institutions, and borrowers; massive provision of liquidity to banks in order to ease the credit crunch; and even more radical actions to reduce long-term interest rates on government bonds and narrow the spread between market rates and government bonds.

Today’s global crisis was triggered by the collapse of the US housing bubble, but it was not caused by it. America’s credit excesses were in residential mortgages, commercial mortgages, credit cards, auto loans, and student loans. There was also excess in the securitized products that converted these debts into toxic financial derivatives; in borrowing by local governments; in financing for leveraged buyouts that should never have occurred; in corporate bonds that will now suffer massive losses in a surge of defaults; in the dangerous and unregulated credit default swap market.

Moreover, these pathologies were not confined to the US. There were housing bubbles in many other countries, fueled by excessive cheap lending that did not reflect underlying risks. There was also a commodity bubble and a private equity and hedge funds bubble. Indeed, we now see the demise of the shadow banking system, the complex of non-bank financial institutions that looked like banks as they borrowed short term and in liquid ways, leveraged a lot, and invested in longer term and illiquid ways.
As a result, the biggest asset and credit bubble in human history is now going bust, with overall credit losses likely to be close to a staggering $2 trillion. Thus, unless governments rapidly recapitalize financial institutions, the credit crunch will become even more severe as losses mount faster than recapitalization and banks are forced to contract credit and lending. Equity prices and other risky assets have fallen sharply from their peaks of late 2007, but there are still significant downside risks. An emerging consensus suggests that the prices of many risky assets – including equities – have fallen so much that we are at the bottom and a rapid recovery will occur.

But the worst is still ahead of us. In the next few months, the macroeconomic news and earnings/profits reports from around the world will be much worse than expected, putting further downward pressure on prices of risky assets, because equity analysts are still deluding themselves that the economic contraction will be mild and short. While the risk of a total systemic financial meltdown has been reduced by the actions of the G-7 and other economies to backstop their financial systems, severe vulnerabilities remain. The credit crunch will get worse; deleveraging will continue, as hedge funds and other leveraged players are forced to sell assets into illiquid and distressed markets, thus causing more price falls and driving more insolvent financial institutions out of business. A few emerging-market economies will certainly enter a full-blown financial crisis.

So 2009 will be a painful year of global recession and further financial stresses, losses, and bankruptcies. Only aggressive, coordinated, and effective policy actions by advanced and emerging-market countries can ensure that the global economy recovers in 2010, rather than entering a more protracted period of economic stagnation.

582,000 Canadians could lose jobs if Big 3 fail

TORONTO - Canada could lose more than 580,000 jobs within five years if Detroit's Big Three automakers go out of business -- most of them in Ontario, according to a Ontario government commissioned report.

The review, prepared for Ontario's Ministry of Economic Development and released Tuesday, warns that the collapse of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC would send lasting shock waves through the economy.

If auto output by U.S.-based manufacturers in Canada were cut in half, at least 157,400 jobs would be lost right away, 141,000 of them in Ontario.
By 2014, job losses would rise to 296,000 nationally, including 269,000 in Ontario.

If production were to cease completely, 323,000 jobs would be lost immediately in Canada, including 281,800 in this province, rising to 582,000 nationally and 517,000 in Ontario by 2014.

The Ontario Manufacturing Council, a provincial government panel, commissioned the 11-page report, which was prepared by the Center for Spatial Economics.
The report paints a gloomy picture if the provincial government and Ottawa and Washington do not bail out the automakers.

Ontario Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant said Tuesday a proposed $3.4-billion Canadian ($2.8 billion) rescue package is needed to avoid a "catastrophic" chain of events.

"We are talking about CPR, literally, CPR for a company to avoid it from going under and causing a chain of events that would be catastrophic to the economy," Bryant said.
Bryant said Canada "is better off providing life support to GM and Chrysler, because the demise of auto in Canada is the economic equivalent of a nuclear freeze with catastrophic effects that would knock us into a deep recession."

Canadian Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement said last week that Ottawa and Ontario will provide the equivalent of 20 percent of whatever emergency aid the Bush administration gives to the companies -- a figure proportional to the number of vehicles produced in Canada.

Unemployment rate goes up even as new jobs added

After the US economy slow down and other countries following the same trend, Canadian economy does not look promising either. Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney signaled his country may slide into a recession like other industrialized nations, adding weight to economists' forecasts that he may pare interest rates to the lowest since 1960.

We are predicting very marginal growth in 2009,'' Carney said in an interview yesterday when asked if he thought a recession might happen. ``By definition that's close to negative growth, and if we have a balanced forecast you can see it going either side, so it's a possibility.''

Carney cut his key interest rate to 2.25 percent last month and said the world's eighth-largest economy would shrink this quarter and stall in the first three months of 2009. Three of the country's biggest banks predict a recession, generally considered two quarters of contraction.

The comments ``reinforce the bank's view that more stimulus is needed,'' said Michael Gregory, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. Carney will probably cut rates to 2 percent at the next meeting Dec. 9, and may go below that next year, he said.

Canada's key rate hasn't been below 2 percent since 1960, an era when it was based on treasury yields rather than actions by policy makers. The bank aims for 2 percent inflation, and Gregory said it would cross ``a very important line'' for Carney to take borrowing costs below inflation.

Canada's unemployment rate edged up to 6.2 per cent in October from 6.1 per cent the previous month, Statistics Canada said Friday, even as the economy unexpectedly added thousands of new positions despite struggling to avoid a recession amid a global economic slowdown.

The said division was a out bound call center and mainly responsible of generating business for secured and unsecured personal loans and mortgages

The prospects of outbound call center jobs in Canada are not so good after the implementation of National Do Not Call List effective from September 30, 2008.

As per the CRTC guidelines

Under the National DNCL, the CRTC has new enforcement powers and can penalize telemarketers found to be in violation of the National Do Not Call List legislation or the Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules. Penalties of up to $1,500 for an individual and up to $15,000 for a corporation per infraction may be levied.

$ 15,000 penalty is quite heavy for any telemarketer and this new legislation will surely put heavy weight to reconsider the business operations for any out bound call center in Canada.

So, If you are working in out bound call center in Canada whether its in banking/ financial or any industry, its time to reconsider the alternatives and taking proactive actions.

To get the job you desire and to improve the online application success ratio of your job hunting process, your resume needs to pass through this first automated screening process (computer screening).

Question: So, how to identify whether there is computer screening employed by the bank you are applying?

Answer: All major banks and most big organizations in Canada has this computer screening process implemented in their HR departments. Other way to identify is when prospective financial institute or company where you are applying ask to submit the resume in text format.

Of the nearly 24 million Canadian Internet users, 15.5 million visited a banking site in April. RBC Financial group led the category with 4.6 million visitors, followed by TD Bank Financial Group with 4.5 million visitors and Bank of Montreal Sites with 3 million visitors. Among those banks in the top 10, Bank of Montreal Sites experienced the greatest increase in visitation during the past year, growing 22 percent.

“Canadians are typically very savvy Internet users, a fact that is underscored by their heavy usage of online banking,” said Brent Bernie, president of comScore Media Metrix, comScore Canada. “But because the Canadian online banking sector is so developed and competition already so fierce, banks need to closely examine how they are meeting the needs of their consumers online if they are to achieve customer growth and retention through this increasingly important channel.”

Some key facts that highlight Canadians’ heavy usage of online banking:

Of the 37 global markets individually-reported by comScore, Canada ranked number one in adoption of online banking, with 67.1 of Canadian Internet users banking online in April 2008. Other English-speaking countries had significantly lower penetration, including the U.K. (49.5 percent), U.S. (44.4 percent), and Australia (41.7 percent).
Canadians also led the world in online banking frequency, with an average of 8 usage days and 10.5 online banking visits per visitor in April.
Canadians spent an average of 46 minutes on banking sites in April, viewing approximately 121 pages per visitor.

Canada does not have banking crisis: Harper

TORONTO (Reuters) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Monday that the Canadian banking sector is not in crisis and vowed to help other countries cope with their financial difficulties.

The prime minister, in an election stop near Ottawa, called for a coordinated effort to tackle the slumping global economy.

"The main concern is the tightening of credit around the world," he told reporters in Nepean, Quebec.

"Our main advice is to encourage co-ordinated action and to encourage actions that will stabilize the situation without creating a great deal of moral hazard for taxpayers."

Harper also said he is "fundamentally optimistic" for the Canadian economy.

A Bank of Nova Scotia report on Monday forecast a Canadian recession that could last well into 2009.

The banking industry in Canada includes 20 domestic banks, 24 foreign bank subsidiaries, 22 full service foreign bank branches and 7 foreign bank lending branches operating in Canada. As major players in Canada's financial industry, the banks serve millions of customers. They include individuals, small- and medium-sized businesses, large corporations, governments, institutional investors and non-profit organizations.

The major domestic banks offer a full range of banking, investment and financial services. They have extensive, nation-wide distribution networks and also are active in the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and other parts of the world. Close to half of their earnings are generated outside of Canada.

Many large international banks have a presence here - through a subsidiary, representative office or branch of the parent bank. Most specialize in corporate and investment banking (e.g., niche financing) and have only one or two offices/branches. A notable exception is HSBC Bank Canada, which has a strong retail presence with branches across Canada.

Schedule I Banks (Domestic Banks)

Schedule I banks are domestic banks and are authorized under the Bank Act to accept deposits, which may be eligible for deposit insurance provided by the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Schedule II Banks (Foreign Bank Subsidiaries)

Schedule II banks are foreign bank subsidiaries authorized under the Bank Act to accept deposits, which may be eligible for deposit insurance provided by the Canada Deposit and Insurance Corporation. Foreign bank subsidiaries are controlled by eligible foreign institutions.

Schedule III Banks (Foreign Bank Branches)

Schedule III banks are foreign bank branches of foreign institutions that have been authorized under the Bank Act to do banking business in Canada. These branches have certain restrictions.
