It is going to be a bit of a homecoming back to near where he played college golf for Tiger Woods, but it is also going to be the same for another fellow Stanford grad, Matt Kuchar (US Open Odds: 28 to 1 at Bovada Sportsbook). There are only five titles in Donald’s mantle at this point in his career, and many of them came in tournaments in which the best golfers in the world weren’t involved. Donald is consistent, though he isn’t a consistent winner, but we have to think that there is at least a 1 in 15 shot that he is going to be the man that is collecting the spoils as the 2012 US Open winner.

It isn’t all that often that a Kentucky Derby winner isn’t the favorite on the odds to win the Preakness Stakes. It’s even more rare to see a horse that wins both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes not be an odds on favorite on the odds to win the Belmont Stakes. That’s the position that I’ll Have Another (Current Belmont Stakes Odds: 1.70 to 1 at 5Dimes Sportsbook) finds himself in coming to the Belmont Stakes. What we have seen out of this horse is the ability to run down the best in the world. Not only has I’ll Have Another figure out how to run down Bodemeister, who is clearly the best speed horse that we have seen in years and years in the Triple Crown races, but the way that he has put on that burst down the stretch at the end of both of the first two races of the Triple Crown shows that he has the stamina to be able to make it the full mile and a half here at the Belmont. This is a relatively fresh horse, having run (and won) all four races that he has been in this calendar year, and there is no doubt that he is going to be the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes in 2012.

Beyond this, we really don’t have a lot of horses that we know are going to be heading to the Big Apple for a shot at winning a Triple Crown race this year. At least as of right now, it doesn’t seem as though Bodemeister is going to be making the trip to New York. However, one of the horses that was amongst the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby should be back. Union Rags has now had a few weeks off after his disappointing finish at the Kentucky Derby, and he is expected to be here at the 144th Belmont Stakes. Union Rags was a 9 to 2 shot on the morning lines at the Kentucky Derby, but he just didn’t give his best effort. He got caught up in traffic and never really got through it, and the seventh place that he finished was the best spot that he was in for the full race. With a smaller field and more track to work with, Union Rags might become a horse to watch out for, though.

The horse that finished third in the Kentucky Derby, Dullahan is going to be running here in New York as well. Dullahan is a huge closer, and he made it through the field coming from 13th to make a case at the wire to be the winner. Our cause for concern with Dullahan is that he really didn’t seem to have the kick to make it to the front of the field against I’ll Have Another, and if these two horses end up dueling at the end, we just don’t know if Dullahan is going to have the goods, especially in that last, very long quarter of a mile.

Beating the Kentucky Derby odds, the Preakness Stakes odds, and the Belmont Stakes odds in the same year has been virtually impossible. In fact, for the better part of the last 3.5 decades, there hasn’t been a horse that has pulled off the remarkable feat. The colt went off the board at 15/1 to win the Kentucky Derby, making a number of bettors happy at the mutuels. Just before the start of the Preakness Stakes, 5Dimes had I’ll Have Another at 8 to 1 on the odds to win the Triple Crown. He went off the board at 3 to 1 on the Preakness Stakes odds, the second favorite behind the horse that finished second to him at both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, Bodemeister. Now, I’ll Have Another is just +170 on 2012 Triple Crown odds with just one last race to run for a shot at infamy.

Bodemeister was looked upon as the best three year old horse in the crop this year, and even his trainer, Bob Baffert admitted after the Preakness Stakes was said and done with that I’ll Have Another is finally get the respect that he deserves. That being said, almost all of the horses that have run with a shot at the Triple Crown over the course of the last several years have been odds on favorites to take the Belmont Stakes, which scares us mightily about what we have seen here with an opening line of +170 at 5Dimes.

The last shot that we saw at a Triple Crown winner, Big Brown, was pulled up and didn’t finish the race. Smarty Jones was the closest horse of the relatively recent bunch, finishing second by a length to Birdstone. Funny Cide and Charismatic finished third, while War Emblem stumbled out fo the blocks and finished just eighth. Real Quiet was the closest horse to just miss winning the Triple Crown, finishing just a nose behind Victory Gallop.

But back to I’ll Have Another… This is a horse that has truly been fantastic this year. He has only run four races, which is two or three more than some have run, and he has won all four. The last two are obviously the most impressive at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and in both cases, he was able to kick into a new gear at the end of the race and run down one of the best speed horses that we have seen in years in Bodemeister.

There are still a ton of questions to answer right now. Will Bodemeister make a third attempt at winning a Triple Crown race? Will there be a horse that has been running at the New York circuit and the Peter Pan prove to be too much as a relatively rested horse to take out I’ll Have Another? Are some rabbits going to be run into this field that are going to try to outpace I’ll Have Another?

With the Belmont Stakes still three weeks away, we don’t have all that many commitments yet to the race. What we do know though, is that I’ll Have Another is going to be there, and he is going to have millions watching and in attendance that are going to be pulling for him to do the seemingly impossible: Win the Triple Crown.

The 2012 Kentucky Derby winner is going to be the horse that we all have our eyes on this coming weekend. I’ll Have Another (Odds To Win Preakness: 5 to 2 at Bovada Sportsbook) is amongst the favorites on the odds to win the Preakness Stakes, but he is going to have a bit of a tough time figuring out how to maneuver around Pimlico out of the No. 9 slot. Granted, I’ll Have Another did come from all the way on the outside in post No. 19 at the Kentucky Derby to win this race, though we think that it is going to be a tough run for him this time around. If I’ll Have Another finishes off of the board as we are expecting now that all eyes are on him, there could be some massive payoffs at the mutuels when matters are said and done with. We know that this is going to be a stalking horse for sure, but in the end, we just don’t know if the lack of distance to this race, when parlayed with a relatively unknown jockey, is going to be able to leave any intrigue whatsoever at the Belmont Stakes this year. What we do have to say about I’ll Have Another though, is that he has run three straight races with Beyer Speed Ratings in the 100s, and he has won all three of those races, so this might be a horse to contend with.

However, there is probably a reason that the horse that is favored to beat the 2012 Preakness Stakes betting lines is none other than Bodemeister (2012 Preakness Odds: 7 to 4 at Bovada Sportsbook). Bodemeister was lined as the favorite right out of the shoot on the morning line odds at 8 to 5, and there are very comparable odds offshore at the moment as well. Bodemeister had a great start at the Kentucky Derby, and he led the mass majority of the way before getting nipped in the last couple hundred yards by I’ll Have Another. That being said, there are a lot of different factors that are going to keep this horse in better shape this coming Saturday. For one, there isn’t nearly as much speed that is going to push him to insanely fast fractions as we saw in the Kentucky Derby with Hansen, Trinniberg, and some of the other colts. Bodemeister should be able to get a clean break and be able to get to the rail by the first turn without straining all that much. That will leave more in the tank for the end of the race, where he should be able to put away the rest of the field. This is the best three-year old colt in the world in our eyes, and we think that Bodemeister might even go off the board at even money or even odds on by Saturday’s post time.

At the Kentucky Derby, we definitely had a soft spot for Creative Cause (Current Preakness Odds: 7 to 1 at Bovada Sportsbook). There is definitely no exception this time around either. We just don’t see why this colt is gett so little respect at this point. Sure, Creative Cause ended up fading from third to fifth in the final push at the Derby, but this is a short race, and he is going to have a heck of a lot less in front of him in terms of traffic. He’ll be able to drop back and get out of some trouble right away, and he shouldn’t be intimidated by Bodemeister directly to his right going out in the lead. We measured this horse’s heart at the end of races and talked about that extensively at the Derby, and we still love it right now as well. Remember that it wasn’t just I’ll Have Another that did some closing on the leader in the final few strides, but Creative Cause did as well, closing from down five lengths to just three in spite of the fact that there were other closing horses that caught him as well. We still think if Creative Cause gets to the front in the final few strides that he is going to be the one that gets the gold on Saturday.

Of the horses that didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby, the one that really stands out to us is No. 2 Teeth of the Dog (Odds To Win The Preakness: 15 to 1 at Bovada Sportsbook). This last time that this colt ran was at the Wood Memorial, a race that really put Gemologist on the map. Neither he nor Alpha, the horse that finished second at the Wood are going to be here at the Preakness, but Teeth of the Dog will be, and he might be able to find himself in good shape to get into the money, almost like how First Dude did last year. There isn’t all that much to look back at in terms of history for Teeth of the Dog, but he ran about as well as anyone else did against the then undefeated Gemologist at the Wood. The only races in which he didn’t get into some trouble, he finished in the money, and Teeth of the Dog proved that he can run with some of the better horses in the field when push comes to shove. Don’t be shocked, with the inside post, as long as he stays out of trouble, if Teeth of the Dog finds his way onto the final leaderboard this weekend.

This isn’t going to be the most impressive field that golf has to offer, and that might make the PGA Tour betting lines all the more interesting to bet. Frazar started off his season with sound and fury, and it really looked like he was going to end up in the midst of a great year. To be a winner at The Memorial, you have to be able to go quite low in your scoring, as three straight winners and seven out of eight have all shot at least -12 to win. Key #2: Gregg Popovich has to continue to rotate his players
Well, at least we know that that shouldn’t be all that much of a problem. The Spurs use at least 11 players seemingly every single night, and Popovich is known to use all 13 that he has available to him regardless of whether the game is close or not. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker can’t all play 40 minutes per game like they used to, and that means that the likes of Tiago Splitter, Danny Green, Gary Neal, etc. have no choice but to step it up. None of them really need to contribute more than perhaps about 20 minutes on the court, but those 20 minutes are key, especially the ones that come without the big time scorers on the hardwood.

Key #3: The Clippers absolutely cannot get killed on the glass
Even dating back to 2010, it is quite easy to see the key to winning games in this series. The team that controls the glass is the one that is going to have the best chance to win. The Clippers outrebounded the Spurs 41-35 in the 120-108 win back in March at the AT&T Center, and they held the 53-42 edge in a 103-100 loss at Staples Center in overtime in February. The Spurs were +13 in a 115-90 win right at the outset of the season in December, while the Clippers won the battle on the boards 50-43 in the last meeting of last season, a 90-85 win. That means that Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, and the likes really need to make sure that they are sure-handed on the glass and don’t let a somewhat undersized San Antonio team have its way. If the Spurs win the rebounding battle every night, the Clippers are going to be in a heck of a lot of trouble.

Key #1: Oklahoma City has to get its head back in the game quickly
About the only disadvantage that a team generally has when it finishes off a sweep in the first round is that it could show some rust. We aren’t as worried about this with the San Antonio Spurs as we are with the Thunder, knowing that the Spurs have some veteran leadership to lead the way during the absence. However, no matter who you are, nine days off is going to be tough to say the least. The Thunder are going to have to hit the ground running in this series though, knowing that they are going against an LA team that only finished its first round series two nights ago. If Oklahoma City is going to slip at home, Games 1 and 2 are going to be quite dangerous for sure, especially with Kobe and the gang starting to pick up some confidence.

Key #2: Kobe needs some help from his bench
There are two things that we know for sure from the Lakers every single time we see them on the court. 1: Kobe Bryant is going to be amazing. He has averaged just under 30 points per game in the playoffs this year, and the truth of the matter is that it is always disappointing when he doesn’t play 42 minutes and score 35 points when he is out there this time of year. 2: The rest of the team is going to be a giant crapshoot. Sure, once Metta World Peace came back to the lineup, matters helped dramatically. He put up 15 in Game 7 against the Denver Nuggets. However, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol are below the numbers that we are expecting, and that is putting the pressure on the bench. Steve Blake shot the ball well from beyond the arc in the first round, and that has to keep up. Where is the rest of the help coming from, though? Ramon Sessions? Jordan Hill? Devin Ebanks? No matter who it is from, the Lakers are going to need their supporting cast to really step up, or they will get blown away in this series.

Key #3: The team that keeps its composure will win this series
We have seen it with the Lakers time and time again. They are a team that is able to be frustrated. The Dallas Mavericks did it to the point last year that they were able to sweep LA out of the second round of the playoffs. However, we know that Oklahoma City can be ruffled as well. Metta World Peace has the ability to be a stifling defensive player (as long as his elbows are staying close to his own body), while the combo of Gasol and Bynum in the paint is usually fantastic defensively. If Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook start to have some issues driving to the basket and become strictly jump shooters, the Thunder are in trouble. Whichever team is able to really play its game and forget what the other is trying to make it do will be in the best shape in this series.
