The film Dirty Dancing came out in 1987, and its story takes place even earlier, but this deceptively titled little masterpiece took the moviegoers of the world by surprise. With a cast of characters played by relatively unknown actors, and not much of a budget, it has proven to be a continuing delight. The fact that it has grossed over $300 million and set a record of more than a million sales of home videos might tell you something. The fact that it engendered two multi-platinum albums and untold singles tells you even more.

For those of us who watched Dirty Dancing on the big screen when it was first released, watching it today is almost heartbreakingly nostalgic. The story takes place, after all, in 1963, "before Kennedy was assassinated", and when it seemed the world retained its innocence. Jennifer Grey plays Frances Houseman, known to everyone as "Baby", and not minding it at all. Patrick Swayze is Johnny Castle, the street punk who has the moves as the dance instructor at the resort.

The dancing and all its side effects take place at a resort in the Catskills, where the Houseman family is taking a summer vacation. Baby's father is Dr. Houseman, physician to the rather sycophantic owner of Kellerman's Resort. His wife and Baby's older sister, Lisa, are relatively minor characters but each contributes to the subplot of the film. Baby's fascination with the dance instructor, Johnny Castle, and his partner Penny gets her and her family involved with "those people", and the fun begins.

Baby's naivet? is matched not only by her growing attraction to Johnny, but also by her desire to "change the world". When Penny has an illegal abortion, Baby gets her father to save the dancer's life. Dr. Houseman is horrified that his "Baby" is mixed up in this. To make it worse, he assumes that Johnny is responsible, and forbids her to have anything further to do with him.

Baby has done what she believes is the right thing, but it causes a painful rift between her Dad and her growing understanding of herself. She finds herself offering to stand in for Penny, mostly so Johnny won't lose his "gig". With some really intense lessons from the pro, they develop a pretty stunning routine of their own. Yes, Baby falls in love.

While all this is happening, Baby's older sister is getting ready to "go all the way" with Robbie, son of the resort owner, though we have learned that Robbie is the guilty cause of the dancer's abortion, but feels no guilt. When another woman who has carnal designs on Johnny spies him embracing Baby, spite leads her to accuse Johnny of the theft of a patron's wallet. Johnny is assumed to be the culprit until Baby tells her father and the irate resort owner that Johnny couldn't have done it because he was in his room all night - with her!

Dirty Dancing, with all the sensual and provocative dance scenes between Baby/Frances and Johnny, is really about innocence and growing up. Father and daughter gain a new understanding, and Baby begins the process of becoming the woman she was meant to be. The rousing finale, when Johnny makes a decision and pulls Baby out of her corner and into the spotlight, is downright thrilling to watch. In front of Housemans, Kellermans and everyone else, the two of them bring Dirty Dancing to its finest hour!

Dirty Dancing is basically a simple, romantic love story, with just enough supporting characters and interwoven plot lines to keep it interesting. When the forces of stodginess and intolerance show up, they are ultimately and emphatically overwhelmed by the forces of love and fair play. The realistically choreographed dance scenes are a powerful force in themselves, but everything comes together for a rousing happy ending.

If you missed this performance in the movie theatres, there may still be a chance to see the Broadway production, which translates very well. It has played to great applause in Germany, England, Canada and Australia, and as of this date is still playing in London. The touring production will be in Boston until March 15th, 2009. Go see it if you can, and if you can't, get the video. This wonderfully Dirty Dancing is too much fun to miss!

4 Way to Help Your Toddler Sleep in His Own Bed

Making the big move as we call it in our house can be a scary thing for a toddler. For us, it came when my 16 month old discovered how to climb over the rails of his crib. Unfortunately, it was right about the time when we were able to lay him down and he would go to sleep on his own. Needless to say, we were scared!

The big move went fairly well for us with only a few nights of getting up and down. These tips will help your toddler sleep in his big bed easily and comfortably.

Dont take down the crib just yet

Toddler sleep patterns are fairly predictable which makes it easy to start with nap time when making the move to a toddler bed. Use nap time to get your little one interested in the new bed and to get him used to sleeping there instead of the crib. To make this easy on you, simply leave the crib in the room with the new bed.

Make bedtime predictable

Every night your child should have a good idea about what is going to happen at a particular point in the evening. This creates an environment in which they are comfortable and secure. Your toddler will take this security with them when they transition to the toddler bed. Try incorporating baths, brushing teeth and a story into your bedtime routine.

Decorate to motivate

The great thing about children is that they are easily entertained. So make this transition an adventure by rearranging their furniture or painting their room a new color. You should be cautious with this since it can be a really good thing or a really bad thing. Make sure to talk to your child and involve them in the change. If they seem hesitant about it, then don't do it however, if they seem excited about it, then shoot for the moon.

If you child refuses to sleep in the toddler bed, then go ahead and tell him that you are going to try it out for him and let him know how great it was the next morning.

If these things are still not enough to actually convince your toddler to sleep in his new bed, then by all means, feel free to resort to a negotiation. Since this isn't mandatory, it is okay to tell your toddler "When you sleep in your new bed all night then we will do something extra special the next day". It is important to be specific about what the reward is for accomplishing this new goal.

There are important new oil fields that have been recently discovered, like the huge field off the coast of Brazil, but the oil field is a very deep field indeed and the oil will be quite expensive to pump and transport to refineries.

After reaching the ocean floor some 6,000 feet down the Petros controlled oil field is still in vast reservoirs about 4,000 feet below the ocean floor. That oil will be very expensive to extract. It will probably be at least ten years before any oil is produced and that will happen only with much higher sustained prices than current prices for crude oil.

Even with a quick study of the dynamics in the crude oil market the investor will probably conclude that oil prices are headed higher, perhaps much higher, and probably not in the too distant future. We have already experienced a spike in oil prices to about $147 a barrel followed by a collapse to a low of about $33 a barrel.

The question then is how to invest in oil if you are a typical investor with limited resources? If you trade oil futures contracts the volatility of the market and the margin required to purchase contracts make oil trading a very risky venture, out of the reach of many traders. Even if you have the required money to purchase and to hang onto your positions you may not be able to stomach the gut churning volatility.
