Don Warden, was a frequent speaker at Columbia University during the 1980s (Obama graduated from Columbia in 1983).

The term "fellow traveler" dates to the 1950s McCarthy era and before. The word was used to describe communists and their associates in the U.S. state department during the Alger Hiss hearings which involved Whitaker Chambers and Richard Nixon.
