Clocks have changed. Boats are on the water. Spring season is upon us!
Following the winter that wasn’t, we want to give you an update on what’s happening in and around BHRA:

New Coaches
We are pleased to announce that Katie Berger and Siobhan Pierce have joined the ranks of our dynamic coaching staff. Katie, who recently was awarded her PhD in Environmental Science, a former UMass rower and UNH coach, is our Novice Girls’ coach. Siobhan, a former rower for Lesley College, science teacher and soccer coach at Ayer Middle School, will be heading up our 7th and 8th grade Learn to Row program, commencing in April. We warmly welcome both coaches.

Spring Season Begins: Kick-Off Meeting and Race Schedule
Our Spring Season Kick-Off meeting will be held on March 27, 2012 in the Bromfield cafeteria at 7 p.m. The meeting is mandatory for parents and voluntary for rowers. Join us for coffee and dessert. An overview of the season and the program will be provided as well as a Q & A period.

It won’t be long before we’re under the tent! While we not-so-patiently await the pond refill, our coaches have initiated opportunities to get rowers on water. Thank you to all parents who have arranged transportation to row in other venues. We appreciate your efforts. The Spring race schedule is posted online at www.barehillrowing.com/fall-2010-regatta-information/spring-2012-race-schedule.

Art Show and CPR Classes Benefiting BHRA
Leslie Hart and Holy Hatton are heading up an Arts, Crafts & Bake sale this Saturday, March 24, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Old Harvard Library, 7 Fairbank Street, Harvard to benefit BHRA and BAB rowing. Contact Leslie or Holly if you can help. We hope you’ll visit and do some shopping!

Rower and certified trainer Ben Wilmot is offering American Heart Association CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) certification courses in March and April. The cost is $60 p/person and Ben is generously donating the proceeds to BHRA to purchase boat covers. Contact Ben at ben@wjari.com to sign up and support his great initiative and this important effort. Thank you, Ben!

Rowing Enrichment: May 3–Save the Date!
On Thursday evening, May 3, 7pm, BHRA is sponsoring the presentation “Race Preparation for Athletes: Hydration, Nutrition and Sleep” by David Jack. The event will be held in Volunteers Hall at the Harvard Public Library. David is the Fitness and Wellness Director for Teamworks Centers and the CATZ program located in Acton, MA. He has worked with professional teams and athletes, corporations, kids, and adults to help them achieve their athletic and lifestyle goals. A popular and dynamic speaker, David is a regular contributor and advisor to organizations such as Rodale Inc. / Men’s Health, Reebok International, and the International Youth Conditioning Association. This event is free and open to the public. Bring friends!

Summer Rowing
BHRA offers a host of outstanding opportunities for summer rowing. Adult and Youth Learn to Row programs, Youth Competitive and Youth Recreational are just a few offerings. Flexibly designed to meet the needs and schedules of all participants, the program offers everything for the beginner rower to masters coaching, including invaluable race opportunities. Spread the word among friends and colleagues about this unique and fantastic summer experience. Check it all out at www.barehillrowing.com/programs/summer.

Cheers to Spring!
See you on the 27th!

It helps the body core warm up quickly and stay warm during cold weather racing. If you want to wear a hat while racing, the Racing Hat is the only one to have. The Unstructured Hat is a cotton twill baseball hat.

Parents should check out the fleece jacket (sample will be in the IT room Feb. 27 – March 2), baseball hat and polo shirt.

http://bromfieldrowing.boathousegear.com/

2. JL Vertex Long Sleeve Shirt Athletes would use it as a training warm-up shirt – worn over their practice gear or for casual wear. Also, it would be great to see all our parents at the tailgate wearing a matching team shirt! If you spend anytime outdoors, this is the shirt to have. It’s considered a base layer. It’s loose fitting – the fabric is called Vertex. It’s lightweight, the shirt you put on before the fleece. It provides warmth but also acts as a sun protector for those blistering UV days. This shirt is standard issue for the US Rowing Team. Shirts come in Men’s and Women’s sizes. $30

Orders can be placed at practice or emailed to Holly. Checks payable to: JL Racing will be collected at practice.

Vertex: 50% Recycled Polyester, 50% Polyester – 125 gram
Vertex has a dual-layer ribbed construction, which gives it more stretch than other woven fabrics. Combined with a super light-weight and soft hand, this provides excellent movement when worn loose or close to the body. The dual-layers are what give Vertex its unique eco-technical advantage. Next to the skin is recycled polyester, with engineered wicking; the outside layer is rated for sun protection. With a rating exceeding 40 UPF for white, you are not only kept cool and protected, you are doing it with recycled fibers
Technical Properties: Wicking, Anti-microbial, Recycled fibers, and high UPF rating.
Our shirt Color: Navy Blue

There were 70 athletes from 6 public schools competing on the erg for 2000 meters. We had 5 boys and 6 girls from our team take on the challenge.
With the results in, the coaches agree, winter training is clearly paying off!

All the boys PR’d and we had 3 PR’s from the girls.

The girl’s also placed first in their class categories: freshman – Molly Hart, sophomore – Sylvia Sarnik and junior – Olivia Maclean
And an added bonus, Sylvia’s time was the fastest overall lightweight time and Olivia was the fastest open weight time.

It was a great job by all out athletes. Congrats to all and thanks to all the parents who came out to support the team.
