Undercabinet lighting is most often found in the kitchen, but it can also be used in utility rooms, shops, small work stations, wet bars and side boards. The location or application of the lighting will influence which type of system is most appropriate.

The best way to get lots of bright, shadowless light to an under cabinet task area is with fluorescent lighting.

However, there are many types, and some are better than others. The three major lamp types for these systems are T5, T8, and T12 in various lengths and wattages (there are also T2 fixtures, and compact fluorescents ones too, but they are seldom seen for residences). What do these codes mean? The letter T stands for "tubular" as in fluorescent tube, and the number indicates the diameter of the lamp in eighths of inches (i.e. T5 = 5/8"). The lamp diameter usually dictates the fixture height (thickness). There are a number of manufacturers that make fixtures for the T5 lamp, but there is very limited availability of anything other than "warm white" or "cool white" tubes (and both have poor color qualities). The T12 lamps have many choices of color qualities, but you then have a 2" profile fixture, which is rather bulky.

A great choice is a fixture that uses T8 lamps.

You get excellent color and a narrow profile (usually about one & one half inches. Using electronic ballasts eliminates hum and flicker.

For residential applications, incandescent is frequently asked for because of low first cost and people think incandescent has improved light qualities over fluorescent.

In reality though, to provide enough light for tasks, these systems must use many lamps that consume lots of power, generate heat, and can be a nuisance to maintain (i.e. many bulbs that burn out frequently). However, if you got a better quality of light with incandescent, these problems could be justified, but in reality, the light delivered usually has shadows that can make working under them difficult. If what you are lighting is primarily for display then the shadows are not necessarily a problem. Incandescent systems are also easier to control with dimmers than fluorescent, but for task areas, generally one wants the light either on or off.

The incandescent systems on the market fall into two major categories:

line voltage and low voltage. Line voltage systems (120 volt) usually incorporate some sort of linear channel that holds a number of sockets to light tubular showcase type lamps.

Low voltage systems (12 volt or 24 volt) are similar and have a transformer to step down the voltage. The lamps used are smaller (often little automotive lamps) than 120 volt systems and the channel can be quite compact. What they lose in size they often make up for in price. By using xenon or halogen lamps one can get fairly high light levels with moderate power consumption. Some manufacturers have fixtures with a transformer, reflector, lamps, and lens all in one housing.

There are also modular systems that allow mixing of fluorescent and incandescent in the same unit. These systems simplify rough-in and installation. No one system is appropriate everywhere. If you are lighting a formal dining room sideboard where atmosphere and dimming are a priority then incandescent may be your choice. If you are task lighting in a kitchen you may want to consider all the advantages of fluorescent.

Garden Solar Lighting

Solar lighting are very popular for lighting yards and gardens. They are virtually maintenance free, easy to install, and cost almost nothing to run. Once you have bought solar lights, the only future maintenance costs are for replacement batteries.

The only drawback for solar lighting is that they must be placed in an area which receives a lot of sunlight during the day. If your garden or a pathway is shaded, solar lighting is not going to work very well.

If you are intent on having solar lighting for a shaded area, you can install a solar panel on your roof or other spot which receives a lot of sunlight. This is a bit more expensive than regular solar path lights or solar spotlights and you need to run a wire from the solar panel to the lights.

Depending on the amount of sunlight received during the day, solar garden lights can provide six to 12 hours of lighting in the evening. They have a built in photosensor which turns the lights on when it becomes dark. They remain lit until the battery is depleted or the sun rises -- whichever comes first.

Regular solar garden lights are easy to install. Simply pushed him into the ground, adjust the photocell so that it is aiming towards the sun most of the day, and that's it! Instant lighting! Unfortunately, this same ease of installation also makes solar garden lights and easy target for thieves and vandals. They simply pull them out of the ground and it's goodbye to your solar path lights.

Solar lights which are permanently installed on a deck or patio are more difficult to swipe. These kinds of lights require a screwdriver to install and also to remove. They are still vulnerable to theft but a little more difficult to steal.

Solar garden lights are available in a variety of styles. You can buy hanging solar lights, solar spotlights, and even specialty solar lights such as colored lights and swimming pool lights. They are available at quite a reasonable cost but it's worthwhile shelling out a few extra bucks to get a good set of lights. Cheaper lights have been known to break during the storm conditions and high winds.

Pendant Lighting Fixture Layout - How To

Pendant lighting has gained a great deal of popularity for use in kitchens over the last few years. A common place to install them is over an island or peninsula. One of the most frequent questions I see is how high do I hang them and how do I space them out? Both questions can be answered in several ways and as with any home design aspect there is no absolute or right answer. There is however some guidelines to use that can help you make the right decision.

One consideration on the height is with the fixture you choose. If a fixture has an open bottom and it is installed to high, it can become very annoying looking up into the light bulb all the time. By the same token, a fixture that is designed so that the top is not made to be viewed, if installed too low, can be very unappealing. There is an average height you can use as a guide, about 68" - 72" off the floor to the very bottom of the fixture. This puts the fixture at about eye level for the average person. The reason there is no correct answer is in a house where everyone is 6' 4" and taller this height would most likely be too low.

Over a dining room table this same rule can be applied. A little tip or word to the wise. If your fixture is going to be installed before there is actually a table under it put something there in its place. It could be a large box, bench, folding table or a chair. It will save someone a trip to the hospital for stitches after walking into the fixture or a broken fixture.

Spacing the pendants when there is more than one is a matter of a little mathematics. The most common mistake is to just split the space into even sections but that is not entirely correct and I'll explain why. Let's say your island is 60" long and you have two pendants. A common thought would be to split the space into three sections that are even. This would give you each fixture 20" off the ends and 20" between them. A better choice would be 15" off each end and 30" between them. Why is that you ask? Well for one thing you'll see it is more visually appealing. The other reason is the light spread on most pendants is in the shape of a circle. If you can imagine the actual light that falls on the counter area picture two circles of light. To best illuminate the counter we want the edge of the circle to hit the edge of the counter. The other two edges should meet or overlap in the middle.

Living Recessed Lighting Spacing

Lighting for living spaces (living rooms, dens, or bedrooms) can actually be more difficult to design than lighting for task areas (kitchens, home offices, and baths). The lighting must be flexible for the many and varied activities in these rooms. The general emphasis is on atmosphere and mood, with the occasional task (reading a book, packing for a trip, or late night cleaning).

I start by accent lighting points of interest; artwork, architectural details, and display areas.

These elements are usually at the perimeter of the room, on or adjacent to the wall. Accent lighting is best accomplished with spot lights (low voltage halogen is a good energy-efficient choice), or wall washing (large lamp fluorescent strips are good for even lighting of large areas*). track or recessed lighting are good choices for spotlighting individual pieces of artwork or points of great interest. Bookshelves, very large wall art (quilts, murals, etc.) or collections (groups of small objects with equal import) are best lit with wallwashers. These can take the form of recessed cans or track, but a better choice may be to use architectural fixtures.

Aluminous soffit or a valance can be built to hold fluorescent strips to provide uniform wall lighting. Don't forget to light 'floating' furniture like coffee tables, as these provide a nice focal point for seating areas.

Once the points of interest have been lit, look for task areas to light (reading, wet bars, hobby or game tables).

The amount of light you need will vary, some hobbies can require a lot of light, while casual reading may use much less. A good strategy is to physically bring the light source to the task. This can be accomplished by using a hanging fixture or a floor lamp, or by projecting the light to the task as with a spot light from track or recessed fixtures. Beware of glare with spot lights! Decorative elements in these areas such as portable fixtures, or a pendant hanging over a game table can be a nice touch. If you use recessed lighting, plan your furniture layout very carefully. If you make significant changes later, the tasks may be in different places.

After the accent lighting and the task lighting comes the ambient lighting.

In small rooms with light surfaces, you may not need any extra lighting to provide ambient light. Portable fixtures and the light reflecting off of artwork may provide enough light to comfortably move through the space. However, in a large room, or one with dark surfaces, additional ambient lighting may be wanted. Recessed lighting is a poor choice for ambient lighting (even though it is frequently applied this way). Instead, use wall sconces or ceiling lights, or add a portable fixture or two (think about using switched outlets on the portables). A great way to add ambient light is with indirect fluorescent lights. You can create a cove or lightshelf on the walls to bounce light off of the ceiling. Lighting the ceiling helps expand the space and can add visual interest to the room itself.

Remember to layer the light and control the layers independently so the room can adapt to different functions as desired. Dimmers are a good way to help the lighting be more adaptable and they extend the life of incandescent bulbs considerably.

*I always recommend electronic ballasts for T-8 lamps. In living spaces a low color temperature (3000 degrees K) and a high CRI (80+) is usually desirable. If your lighting budget allows, think about using a dimmable ballast.
