A Cornish farmstay holiday company have opened access to their 550 acre farm with the creation of three new permissive footpaths.

Guests staying in the converted barns and cottages at The Olde House, near Chapel Amble in North Cornwall, can now walk out of their front door and straight onto the farm trail.

The three circular routes all pass through mixed use farmland – home to over 750 sheep, 250 beef cattle and 250 acres of arable crops – and give access to the neighbouring nature reserve on the Amble Marshes.

Shaun Hawkey of The Olde House said: “We have offered our guests the freedom to walk around the farm for the past 20 years, and with this new scheme we have made access much easier by putting in 14 new gates and three stiles along with route markers, maps and information boards.

“We have also extended the farm trail with new footpath routes, and the big change is that we are now able to open it up to members of the public as well as our guests so everybody can enjoy the Cornish countryside and experience farm life.”

Different birds can be spotted along the footpath.

The permissive footpaths were created as part of The Olde House’s involvement in Natural England’s higher level stewardship scheme, which offers grants to help establish sustainable farming practices.

Along with the farm trail, the Hawkeys have raised water levels on former agricultural land to protect the Amble Marshes SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and promote sensitive grazing to support wetland birds, including the rare glossy ibis which was spotted on the farm in January 2012.

Work on the farm trail finished in February and the footpaths will be open all year round, giving walkers access to ponds, farm animals and interesting archaeology including a complex of Iron Age to Roman period settlement enclosures and a cursus – a prehistoric monument.

Special Offer – February and March

With 16 million lambs born in the UK every year, lambing is one of the busiest events in the farming calendar, and this spring a Cornish farmstay company are offering families the chance to witness lambing live.

At the The Olde House in Chapel Amble, north Cornwall, guests staying in the 30 self-catering cottages can experience daily life on the farm.

A working farm set in 550 acres, The Olde House holds two lambing seasons a year for their 750 Poll Dorset sheep.

Spring sees their second (and largest) lambing season of the year, with 450 of their younger ewes giving birth. Starting in late February they will continue through until the middle of April, by which time there will be hundreds of new lambs on the farm.

Owner Andrew Hawkey said: “The lambing season is always one of the busiest and most exciting times on the farm. We were lucky enough to have a set of quadruplets born for the first time in 20 years during our early season in November which can still be seen in the pets corner.

“Many of our guests really enjoy learning about life on a farm, particularly the children, who can help feed all the lambs and really experience the process first hand.”

The set of quads born in November 2011, the first in 20 years.

All the ewes were scanned at the beginning of January and the Hawkeys’ flock are expecting 835 lambs, comprising 90 singles, 335 doubles and 25 trebles.

Throughout March there will be a constant stream of lambs being born, both day and night, while guests can watch all stages of the birth as well as daily check ups and monitoring.

At the Pets Corner, families have the opportunity to bottle-feed the orphan or tame lambs abandoned by their mothers.

When the lambs are sleeping, there are plenty of activities around the farm to keep the whole family entertained, with an indoor play barn, an outdoor play area, giant chess board, tennis courts, and an indoor leisure centre complete with heated swimming pool, sauna and whirlpool.

Two new events feature in Watergate Bay’s action-packed 2012 events calendar unveiled today.

Alongside the new kitesurf and powerboat racing events, English surfers will be celebrating an anniversary year as they compete in the 40th edition of the English National Surfing Championships.

Kitesurfers will be showing off their wave-riding skills with the addition of a new Wavejam competition to the British Kitesurfing Association’s season-opening course racing championships.

Then spray will fly as a new surf powerboat race series comes to Cornwall for the first time, with the Extreme Academy hosting the opening rounds of the Thundercat Racing Series in May.

Will Ashworth, managing director of The Hotel & Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay, said: “We are really excited to be hosting Thundercat racing at the Extreme Academy for the first time in 2012. It’s a fantastic sport to watch and with a bit of luck Watergate Bay will be throwing up some challenging conditions in the surf for the competitors.

“It’s great to be able to celebrate four decades of top level surfing – Watergate Bay first held a national championship event in the 1960s and it’s quite something to see how surfing has evolved to today’s high performance levels.”

The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay has confirmed ten events in their exciting line up, including the return of the award-winning Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach.

Famous for it’s surf, the beach will also see some of the country’s best stand-up paddle (SUP) surfers, longboarders and surf boat rowers take to the waves.

Extreme Academy 2012 events schedule

BKSA National Course Racing and Wavejam, Round 1 – 21/22 April 2012

In an event that is all about speed, the country’s best kitesurfers will kick off the British Kitesurfing Association (BKSA) season, racing across a course that runs the width of the bay on 21 and 22 April.

A boutique food and music festival returns to the banks of Cornwall’s Camel Estuary in June, with organisers promising a line up of top chefs and critically acclaimed music acts.

Now in its third year, The Rock Oyster Festival is a family-orientated food, music and arts festival. The event will run from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 June 2012.

Held in the grounds of Dinham House near Rock, north Cornwall, the festival will showcase some of the county’s best food and chefs, acclaimed headline music acts and a full programme of kids’ activities

Event organiser Charlie Anderson said: “The Rock Oyster Festival is all about celebrating the delicious artisan-produced food and drink that we have here in Cornwall in a lighthearted and fun environment. We are making these amazing foods accessible to everyone, where else can you feast on a plate of food prepared by top chefs for a fiver?

“Moving the festival to Dinham House has been a great success. It’s an absolutely stunning location, plus we have the space to fit in more food providers, more entertainment and on-site camping.”

Last year's Rock Oyster Festival was the first at new venue Dinham House on the banks of the Camel Estuary.

New for 2012 is the addition of a chefs’ demonstration theatre, where some of Cornwall’s most talented chefs will host cooking demos over the whole weekend.

Confirmed to appear so far are Stephane Delourme and David Sharland from Rick Stein’s The Seafood Restaurant; James O’Connor from St Moritz Hotel; Tom Scade from Tides at The Mariners, Rock; and star of BBC2’s Great British Menu, Paul Ainsworth.

Festival goers will also see their favourite chefs compete in the famous oyster shucking competition, where they will go head-to-head to present perfectly prepared fresh oysters in the fastest time.

Organisers have already confirmed half a dozen alternative music acts from around the world, including Friday night headliners the Dub Pistols, who were voted the best live act of 2011 by DJ Mag, and the Mercury Prize-nominated band The Bees.

The Bees have been confirmed as a headline act at this year's Rock Oyster Festival

Mr Anderson said: “We’re hoping to be able to announce another headline music act to join the fantastic bands we already have confirmed to play at the festival. The event has always made a point of booking quirky musicians who know how to put on a great show and get their audience dancing. Music that is guaranteed to put a grin on your face.”

A limited number of discounted weekend early bird tickets are now available from the festival website, at the rate of £40 per adult, with under 17s weekend tickets priced at £10.

A new Cornish craft brewery officially opened its doors for business on Friday 20 January.

The Harbour Brewing Co are now taking their first orders after North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson cut the ribbon at their Kirland, Bodmin premises on Friday.

Dan, who is also the Vice Chair of the Parliamentary Beer Group, said at the launch: “People are really interested now in beers and craft beers. We have that talent here in Cornwall, and already have some established businesses. There is a whole community of breweries now that are showing what Cornwall is about and what it can achieve.

“I have every confidence that Harbour Brewing Company is a business that will grow and create jobs for local people, as other breweries have in the area. They are already using Cornish barley and are developing ties with other local services.”

Friends Eddie Lofthouse and brewer Rhys Powell made their dream a reality by setting up the Harbour Brewing Co in 2011, with the ambition to create contemporary beers that deliver an uncompromising taste, taking inspiration from the American brewing scene.

The facility boasts an American-designed, Hungarian-built steam fuelled brewing system which Mr Lofthouse says is more efficient than a traditional British set up. Each brew produces 2,816 pints and they aim to be producing 6,000 kegs by the end of this year.

The Harbour Brewing Co will produce a core range of four beers, available in both cask and bottle, with limited edition speciality beers for their Harbour Specials range.

The Harbour Brewing Co was started in 2011 by Brewer Rhys Powell and Eddie Lofthouse who share a passion for beer and surfing, both with the dream of opening their own brewery. In early 2011 the pair took their dream further and starting from scratch took the opportunity and installed a 10 British Brewers Barrels (bbl) system, to create a range of full flavoured, balanced and creative beers. The brewery opened in January 2012.

Two Cornish brewers have made their dream a reality and are launching a new craft brewery in North Cornwall.

The official opening of the Harbour Brewing Company will take place on 20th January 2012, where Dan Rogerson MP and Vice Chair of the Parliamentary Beer Group will officiate.

Brewer Rhys Powell and Eddie Lofthouse turned their dream in to reality in early 2011 by setting up the Harbour Brewing Company from scratch, based on the ethos of creating a craft brewing process and brand.

They apply a progressive and innovative approach to their beer style and brewing technique, whilst honouring traditional and proven methods to produce a range of full flavoured, balanced and creative beers.

From left to right: Eddie Lofthouse and brewer Rhys Powell

Eddie said: “We are committed to making beers that are contemporary and deliver an uncompromising taste experience. We use pure Cornish spring water sourced on the hillside next to the brewery, and only the finest raw materials. We believe this is the only way to deliver a premium quality product.”

Starting with an installation of a brewery system which allows the brewing to be as creative as possible, their business took form at their premises near Bodmin. The 10 British brewers barrel (bbl) system was designed in California and built in Hungary by the American firm Bavarian Brewing Technologies.

Rhys, who studied brewing and distilling at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, explained their unconventional equipment choice: “We chose a combined mash lauter tun, rather than a separate mash tun and a lauter tun, as it gives us all round flexibility with process control and use of adjuncts. It’s more efficient than a traditional British set up.

“We’ve also gone for sealed cyclindroconical fermentation vessels rather than traditional open vessels as it is more hygienic, allows faster fermentation, and ease of yeast harvesting.”

The business partners’ aim is to create a quality, great tasting product, which is different to other Cornish Beers in both taste and branding.

Speaking about the inspiration for the Harbour Brewing Co, Eddie said: “Mass-market bland beer aimed at gaining a market share is not what we are all about. We are all about taste and creativity.

“Beers from all over the world inspire us. The craft beer scene in the USA is an obvious place to draw inspiration and ideas, but there are great breweries and beers from all over the world.

“We are a product-focused business and for us it’s not all about profit, we have set out to make great beers that people enjoy drinking.”

Harbour Brewing Co have a starting range of four different beers including: Harbour India Pale Ale, their strongest beer made using a blend of six British and American hop varieties; malt driven Harbour Amber Ale; Harbour Light Ale; and the Czech-inspired pilsner Harbour Lager. All of the range will be available on draft and in bottles.

They are also working on speciality beers for their Harbour Special range, which will push the boundaries and incorporate some quirky ingredients including cassia bark, bog myrtle, rhubarb and chilli.

If you would like to request an invitation to the official launch of the Harbour Brewing Co, please contact Jim Michell on 01208 895089 or jim@barefootmedia.co.uk.

The Harbour Brewing Co will also launch a new website, www.harbourbrewing.com, on Friday 20 January 2012.

Quadruplet lambs have been born on a North Cornwall farm for the first time in 20 years.

The birth, which took place on Saturday, 26 November at 5.50pm, is a once in a generation occurrence on the 500 acre farm near Wadebridge.

The Hawkey family at The Olde House in Chapel Amble, who operate a farmstay holiday business on the farm, are delighted with the safe arrival of one male and three female lambs.

Owner Andrew Hawkey said: “I’ve only once seen a sheep give birth to quadruplets in my 35 years of farming and that was in 1991.

“We are thrilled to have a set of healthy quads, which is especially rare for the Poll Dorset breed. We had all our ewes scanned in autumn so we knew that one of them was expecting quadruplets, but you can never be sure that they would all be born successfully.

“They are doing really well, and with four lambs to feed the mother doesn’t have enough milk to feed them all so we are bottle feeding the lambs with milk from other ewes.”

Owen Hawkey, 3, from The Olde House in Chapel Amble, North Cornwall with quadruplet lambs born on Saturday 26 November 2011 - the first quadruplets to be born on the farm in over 20 years.

Lambing is one of the busiest times on the farm, which has been in the Hawkey family since the 1920s, as they carry out two separate lambing seasons for their 750 Poll Dorset ewes.

The first season takes place from 10th November through to the week before Christmas, with 300 sheep giving birth. The second lambing season will be held in March and April 2012.

Families can help out during the lambing seasons at The Olde House, who have been providing farmstay holidays for 30 years. Lucky visitors have been able to witness the births, as well as visit the new quadruplets and help with bottle feeding the lambs.

A Cornish restaurant has been shortlisted for a national industry award for their website.

The Harbour Restaurant in Port Isaac is a finalist in the ‘Restaurant Website – Independent’ category for the Caterer and Hotelkeeper Web Awards 2011.

The website – a collaborative project between St Wenn’s Barefoot Media and Liminal Design of Redruth – is the only Cornish representative to be shortlisted in the national awards, which recognise digital marketing excellence in the restaurant and hospitality sectors.

Emily Scott, owner and head chef at The Harbour, said: “We have been absolutely delighted with our website and have had lots of amazing feedback from our customers since it went live in May this year.

“The team at Barefoot Media and Liminal Design have done a fantastic job on the site which really communicates the ethos of The Harbour and our cooking.”

Emily Scott owner and head chef of The Harbour Restaurant

The restaurant is also in contention for the ultimate ‘Website of the Year’, which will be chosen by the readers of Caterer and Hotelkeeper, the judging panel and the senior editors of the Caterer Group.

The judging panel is made up of web specialists and industry operators who shortlisted websites based on visual design, content, innovation and overall experience.

Members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite through an online voting system. Voting closes at midnight on Monday, 5 December and the full list of winners will be unveiled on Friday, 9 December.

Jim Michell of Barefoot Media, who set the marketing strategy and created the content, said: “We’d love Cornwall to get behind Emily and vote for The Harbour. We have a real depth of foodie talent in the Duchy from world-class chefs to some incredible food producers, and it would be fantastic to see one of our rising stars recognised further.”

Liminal Design in Redruth designed and built the website, which featured photography from David Griffen and Ben Rowe.

Ryan Mcfarlane of Liminal Design said: “The Harbour was a really nice project to work on – we had some great new photography from David Griffen so we took quite a simple design approach to let Emily’s food and the interior design stand out.”
