Food swapping: The movement taking off in the UK

The food swapping movement is taking off in the UK with new groups springing up across the country.

Throughout history food has been swapped and traded, from cacao beans to spices. But a modern movement is growing in the UK with anything from home-made sushi, ice cream and pate to eggs, apples and wild garlic on offer.

The swaps are organised events where people trade home-grown, home-made or foraged foods with each other. No money changes hands, food is the only currency.

The Food Swap Network started in Brooklyn, New York, and so far 125 groups have been established across the US and Canada, from Honolulu to Boston. They are now spreading to Europe, with the UK leading the way.

Swap groups are already up and running in Nottingham, Aberdeen, York, St Albans in Hertfordshire, Altrincham in Cheshire and Ormskirk in Lancashire. New swaps are being set up all the time with interest "spiralling" in the last few months, according to those involved.

"They are really social events and you get such a mix of people, from university students to pensioners. I think people like the sense of community that a food swap provides and you meet like-minded people with the same interests. People mingle, chat and swap expertise."

It's a great idea and hopefully just the start of food sharing, says food writer Kevin Gould.

"Food sharing is where food can create peace and harmony. We could go further than swapping and start sharing meals we have cooked - have a community dinner. It has been done in some places and is a great way for bringing communities together and breaking down cultural barriers."

Some people in the UK are developing the idea. The Home Grown Exchange, which runs a food swap in Nottingham, is hosting a World War II themed swap. It also has beauty and craft swaps.

Food blogger Laura Goode recently discovered food swaps and is now organising her own in Tunbridge Wells. She describes it as a "foodie flash mob". The date has been released but the venue will only be revealed the day before.

"I've been so amazed by the interest I'm getting," she says. "I love the idea of a food swap but I want my event to be a bit different. There is a strong social media community of food lovers in my area so I thought I'd use that."....................................................

The conventional way for many a business to trade is that you win a contract to do some work for a customer, buy the necessary stock and materials to do the job, complete the work and then deliver the finished product. If cash flow is tight, which it is for many businesses especially in the current economic climate, the delay in being paid can be problematic. It is particularly relevant to many new business start-ups as they have to plough so much of their financial resources into setting up the business that involves buying such things as machinery and stock resulting in there not being a huge amount of liquid funds available. For many a business, they become dependant upon utilising an overdraft facility but that has the negative effect of reducing their net profit as they will be paying bank interest and fees.

Well, there is an alternative and that is called bartering or it is also known as swapping. Bartering has been taking place for hundreds of years. In fact in 2011 over 400,000 businesses around the world took part in swapping with $12 billion ‘s worth of goods and services exchanging hands.

So, how does a business participate in bartering? There are two main ways: -

Firstly, by exchanging goods. For instance, your business may own a piece of machinery that is being replaced for a newer model. Le troc est un concept de toutes les époques, le troc a toujours existé, le troc a toujours eu ses adeptes et sur tous les continents ! Si le troc est en vogue, tendance,si le troc revient en force, c'est parce que l'internet constitue une véritable révolution au niveau de la communication, de l'information, extrêmement performant, immédiat, quasi gratuit, sans limites géographiques, un merveilleux espace de liberté .

Mais pourquoi échanger plutôt que vendre ?

L'échange est un geste éthique, solidaire, ludique. L'échange ouvre les horizons, déverrouille l'imagination. On renoue avec l'enfance, temps béni où nous échangions sans calcul ni recherche de profits nos trésors, nos bonhommes, par exemple, contre des BD, un skate contre des rollers... L'idée de Bargain Barter est née à la suite de souvenirs merveilleux relatés au cours d'une soirée en famille . Souvenirs de vacances inattendues !

J'étais un ado alors. Nous habitions une maison sur la Côte d'Azur. Un collègue de mon père, localisé dans le nord de la France, lui demanda, lors d'une réunion de travail, s'il connaissait des gens qui, s'absentant au mois d'août, accepteraient de louer leur maison pendant cette période. Mon père répondit en riant : "j'échangerais bien, le temps des vacances, ma maison de Cannes avec ta maison mais je ne suis pas tenté par le Nord ! Dommage, tu n'es pas Floridien ! Je rêve d'emmener ma femme et mes enfants en Floride ! Mais voyage, location, traites de la maison ici, et tout... Impossible. Trop cher"...

"Non, tu rigoles, s'exclama le collègue, mon binôme Américain vit à Fort Mayers. Il rêve de venir en France, de visiter Paris, et je crois bien qu'il a arrêté une date... Août ! J'ai bien envie de le contacter, je lui propose ma maison, je viens dans ta maison à Cannes, et toi et les tiens, poursuivit le collègue, vous villégiaturez dans la maison au bord de l'océan à Fort Mayers de mon binôme Américain".

Mes parents s'enthousiasmèrent de cette idée d'échange vraiment super, trop belle même ! Et tous nous espérions de tout notre coeur le binôme Américain pareillement emballé. L'Internet ne trônait pas encore dans tous les foyers. Organiser, discuter de tout ça entre l'Amérique et la France... pas évident... Néanmoins, la conclusion est fabuleuse. La famille américaine vint dans la maison du nord de la France. La famille du nord de la France vint dans la maison de Cannes. Et la famille de la maison de Cannes, (ma famille et moi-même), s'envola en Amérique, à Fort Mayers.

Des vacances incroyables... Que du bonheur.

L'idée de Bargain Barter est née suite à l'évocation de vacances de rêve, vacances inconcevables sans l'échange improvisé de nos maisons. L'idée de Bargain Barter était née, certes ! Ensuite, naturellement, on creuse l'idée. On cherche d'autres exemples justifiant l'enthousiasme. La première expérience de troc, d'échange, qui me revint en mémoire fut l'échange de ma première voiture, une Fiat Stilo Abarth contre une New Beetle. La Fiat Stilo Abarth avait été choisi un peu à la va vite. J'avais récupéré la vieille voiture de ma grand-mère. Ma grand-mère m'avait suggéré de la vendre pour gagner quelques sous, sa participation pour l'achat d'une auto plus sûre. Le premier concessionnaire qui m'a proposé sa reprise a gagné sa journée puisque il m'a vendu la Fiat.

Anyway... Peu de temps après, je me lassais déja et l'envie de changer me titillait à fond la caisse ! J'ai passé une annonce pour la vendre, j'étais décidé à être patient, je ne voulais surtout pas y laisser des plumes. On me téléphone ! Premier coup de fil, un jeune musicien soliste me fait la proposition étonnante, originale, d'échanger la Fiat Stilo contre une New Beetle ! Il n'était pas pressé, et l'idée de l'échange lui était venue en lisant mon annonce. Mais la New Beetle me faisait craquer à l'époque ! Je me suis dit " la vie est formidable quand même !" Car hasard ou coincidence, je pensais vraiment prendre le temps d'en chercher une d'occasion...dans mes prix. Et dès le premier coup de fil on m'en propose une!

Oui, l'échange a eu lieu, un échange évite bien des tracas financiers, bien des allées et venues et prises de tête... Et je dirai mieux... Depuis l'échange, des années en arrière, si l'un et l'autre avons changé, plus souvent qu'à notre tour, je l'avoue, de voitures, nous sommes toujours potes, même si je n'ai pas de piano à sa disposition lorsque l'ami vient prendre un verre à la maison !

El trueque ha existido durante siglos en una forma u otra con los individuos y las empresas intercambiando productos y servicios. Pero, ¿qué depara el futuro para el trueque, especialmente para las pequeñas y medianas empresas (PYMES)?

Tan solo en 2011 bienes y servicios por un valor de $12 mil millones fueron intercambiados sin ningún traspaso de efectivo entre las empresas involucradas. Se cree que más de 400.000 empresas de todo el mundo decidieron que tenían algo que intercambiar y llevaron a cabo negocios de esta manera. Si bien todavía no existen cifras disponibles para el año 2012, se estima que el volumen de intercambio por esta vía aumentará entre el 5% y 10%.

Es la palabra "efectivo" que se ha mencionado anteriormente la que tiene particular relevancia debido a que en la actual economía global, con países que entran y salen de la recesión, la capacidad de reunir dinero para comprar bienes y servicios es un problema para muchas empresas de tamaño mediano y pequeño. La dificultad es especialmente frecuente con las empresas de nueva creación.
