"It's just cheaper to fly!" Or is it?

Have you heard that before? "It's just cheaper to fly!" I hear this a lot, when people decide to book airline tickets for their destination, rather than drive. It's not a bad choice, per se, but I've often wondered if it's true. Our family has chosen to drive most of the time, because even with gas prices sky-rocketing toward $4/gallon, it is often more cost-effective for us to drive. Want to know how we know that?

Let me introduce you to a handy little tool called AAA's Fuel Cost Calculator. It's awesome! It's completely free, easy-to-use, and you don't have to be a AAA member to use it. I use it whenever we're tempted to fly somewhere instead of drive. It always brings me back to reality. To give you an example...

We're planning an upcoming trip that will be around 808 road miles round trip. For the sake of this example, and just to cast a wide net, I'll compare the cost of the trip using AAA's Fuel Cost Calculator and Travelocity.com.

FLYING:
We are a family of four--2 adults, 1 child, and 1 infant. Our upcoming 808 mile round trip journey on an airline would cost us around $1300-$1800+, and that's not even calculating the cost for extra checked car seats and/or baggage. I selected the cheapest flights available during our travel dates (about 1 month out). The length of travel time would be 6+ hours each way (about the same amount of time to drive to the same destination). Oh! And we haven't even rented a car yet! Or paid for the gas in our rented car, while we drive around.

Flight cost: $1300-1800 (depending on airline) round trip
Rental car cost: ??
Gas cost for rental car: ??
Travel time: 6+ hours each way; 13+ hours round trip

DRIVING:
Using AAA's tool, I put in the parameters of our trip, and our vehicle's make/year/model. AAA uses the average gas prices around the nation to calculate the trip costs. Our average cost right now is around $3.78/gallon. We don't have to check our bags--they fit nicely in our vehicle. Car seats are already installed, and don't need to be checked. According to AAA's tool, from our city to our destination city, the total round trip mileage is 808 miles. According to Google Maps, from doorway to doorway, the total round trip mileage is 846 miles. So, there will be a little bit of variation in the total cost for the trip--but not by much. Based on all of that, AAA says our trip will cost us a whopping $153.00 (thereabouts). And we won't have to pay extra for our luggage at all. The total travel time will be approximately 14 hours round trip--7 hours each way. And there's no additional cost for renting a car.

Driving cost (gas): $153.00 round trip (~$77/each way)
Travel time: 7 hours each way; 14 hours round trip

So, for almost the same amount of travel time, I can save (at least) almost $1200.00 and just drive. Plus, I'll gain the pleasure of teaching my kids about different parts of the country, and the ability to get fresh air or stretch my legs whenever I want.

If you haven't thought about it before, try saving some money this spring and summer by driving! When in doubt, compare the cost of your trip using the Fuel Cost Calculator.

Living Debt-Free...really?!

Our family has been on a quest for many, many years. We're on a mission to eliminate our debt! I shared earlier on this week's Wallet-Friendly Wednesday that we're only 18 months away from eliminating a big debt that we've been working on for about 2-1/2 years now. There will most certainly be a big celebration when that's done!

I love reading about and talking to folks who are successfully living debt-free. It's so inspiring! It makes me feel like we can do it!

That's why I was excited to read an article this week about the Duggars. Some of you just rolled your eyes, and others of you just perked up. I'm not out to debate anything or share any opinions about this family and the way they've chosen to do life. But I have to admire that they are such a big family AND they live debt-free! We've been living fairly simply for quite a while...years, in fact...LOTS of years. Why? Because we're on a mission to get out of debt! Are you in the same boat? We planted a garden this year. To say I have a green thumb would be a straight-out lie. My grandma and mom both have green thumbs. They're great! They just know what to do with plants. I think it must have skipped my generation, unfortunately. Ugh. That's why we're just crossing our fingers and hoping that the garden takes off. Oh, and I totally forgot to label everything! Yeah, I've got a general idea of where things are, but not exactly where they are. I guess you could say I'm more of a haphazard gardener. So, if things take off, we're hoping it saves us a bit of money this year, and teaches our children the fun of growing your own food. Cross your fingers!

Happy Leap Day! And as 30 Rock mentioned in the last episode, "It’s Leap Day. Real life is for March." :) Do you have any fun Leap Day traditions? I've never really "celebrated" Leap Day, but I hear that it's traditionally a day when women propose to men...although, that's not really unusual at any time these days. Happy Valentine's Day...a little early. What are your plans for V-day this year? Are you splurging big-time to declare your love, or keeping things minimal and special? Whatever your plans, make sure to snuggle up to those you love this year, and don't miss out on an opportunity to tell them how you feel. My mom always made Valentine's Day special by giving us cards, making or buying a cake, and maybe getting us a little present or something. We always had someone who made us feel special on V-day. I'm kind of determined to keep that tradition going for my kiddos. I have a heart-shaped cake that I'll be making, and I have cards for everyone. I can't wait to share the love! :)

On a completely different note...I had a hankering for some pizza yesterday, so I totally made up a new little recipe! Wanna hear it? Here you go...

WHOLE WHEAT TORTILLA PIZZAS

Items needed:

Whole wheat tortillas--as many as you'd like

Pizza or spaghetti sauce (whichever you have on hand)

Store-bought pesto sauce

Kale or spinach

Mozzarella cheese

Crushed walnuts

Meat, if desired (sausage, chicken, or pepperoni)--I left this out, since I was only making a couple of tortillas

Preheat oven to 400º. Place tortillas on a baking sheet, and spread 1 dollop of pesto and 1-2 dollop(s) of spaghetti or pizza sauce over the tortillas. Spread it to within a 1/2 inch of the edge. Then sprinkle shredded spinach or kale over the sauce, then crushed walnuts. Now, layer mozzarella cheese over the entire tortilla, followed by meat (if desired). I like to sprinkle a little pizza seasoning over the top. Then, pop the pizzas in the oven for around 10 minutes, or until the cheese begins to brown. Remove from oven, slice up, serve, and enjoy!

Happy New Year!! The holiday season flew by for me this year. We were all ill right around Christmas and New Year's--actually, we're still sick. But, still...the holiday season flew!! I wasn't ready for it to be over. But here we are in 2012. What are your resolutions for the new year? To get more organized? To loose weight? To spend more time with your family?
