My husband and I ride Thunder Mountain every time we go to Disney World, so we have ridden this runaway train many times. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad originated in Disneyland and took a rollicking adventure to Magic Kingdom in 1980. Since its opening, folks have loved buckling in for this bumpy roller coaster.

They say gold was first discovered on this mountain in the 1850s, but did they unearth all the secrets? Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a popular mine train roller coaster located in several Disney parks around the world. The parks include Disneyland in California, Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Park in Paris. 

Each version of the ride offers its own unique features and backstory. They share a common theme of the Wild West and a gold-mining operation in the rugged, late 1800s American Southwest.

Here are 12 fun facts about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! Get ready for the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness!

1. Inspired by Real Locations:
   • The design and landscape of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are inspired by various real-life locations in the United States.
   • This includes the Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah and Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border.
2. First Opened in 1979:
   • The first Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened at Disneyland in California in 1979. It was then introduced to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in 1980, Tokyo Disneyland in 1987, and finally, Disneyland Paris in 1992.
   • The Paris version of the ride, located in Frontierland, is part of a larger story that ties it to the Phantom Manor. This offers a deeper narrative experience.
   • While each of the four versions of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has unique elements, they all share a similar track layout. The Disneyland Paris version is considered by many to be the most impressive.

3. Mining Town Names:
   • Each park’s version of the ride is set in a mining town. Tumbleweed in Magic Kingdom, Rainbow Ridge in Disneyland, and Thunder Mesa in Disneyland Paris.
   • There is a nameless town simply referred to as Big Thunder Mountain in Tokyo Disneyland.
4. Dynamic Effects:
   • The rides incorporate dynamic effects such as earthquakes, floods, and explosions. This is to simulate the dangers of mining in the Old West.
5. Innovative Audio-Animatronics:
   • The Disneyland version was one of the first attractions to use fully electronic Audio-Animatronics figures. They were more flexible and durable than their predecessors.

6. Health Benefits?:
   • A study published in 2016 by the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association suggested that riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad could help pass small kidney stones. Though this is not an officially recommended treatment.
   • This ride is for those in good health. Expectant Mothers, guests with high blood pressure, and neck problems shouldn’t ride.
   • There are dark tunnels on this rail system and it may not be the best for those with motion sickness.
   • There is a height requirement for this ride.
7. Hidden Mickey:
   • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad features “Hidden Mickeys” throughout the ride. The shape of Mickey Mouse’s head is subtly incorporated into the scenery.
   • No Walt Disney World attraction would be complete without a Hidden Mickey!
   • The main Hidden Mickey is a set of gears in the shape of Mickey, which is near the end of the attraction past the dinosaur bones.
8. Interactive Queue at Magic Kingdom:
   • The Magic Kingdom version features an interactive queue where guests can engage with various elements related to the mining company’s backstory.
   • According to the ride’s backstory, the mining equipment operates on its own due to a curse, adding a supernatural element to the thrill ride.
   • Imagineers can’t resist the chance to make Disney attractions as authentic as possible. This is why you see real mining equipment on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. While they could have settled for replicas, Imagineers went further by acquiring pick-axes, stamp mills, cogwheels, ore carts, and more!
   • The certification that proves these pieces of mining equipment are authentic artifacts on Walt Disney World property can be found in City Hall on Main Street.
   • Here’s a bonus fact: the rock formations stretching tall heights on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad were actually inspired by Monument Valley in Arizona! The Walt Disney Imagineering on this ride is truly amazing!

9. Tony Baxter:
   • The ride was designed by Imagineer Tony Baxter. Baxter was also behind other iconic Disney attractions such as Splash Mountain and the Indiana Jones Adventure.
   • The imagineers had a great sense of humor when designing this ride. Because Guests are loaded onto the attraction so quickly, they may not notice that each train has a unique name.
   • They’re called I.M Brave, U.B. Bold, u.r. courageous, U.R. Daring, I.M. Fearless, and I.B. Hearty.
   • If you didn’t already know what to expect from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, these titles will certainly give you an idea of the wild journey ahead. 
10. Largest Audio-Animatronics Figure:
    • The Disneyland Paris version includes the largest Audio-Animatronics figure in the form of a dynamite-wielding goat.
11. There Is an Enchanted Tiki Room Easter Egg: 
    • If you can remember The Enchanted Tiki RoomShow, José, the colorful lead Tiki Bird, asks where Rosita is. Perhaps she took a trip to the mines in Frontierland!
    • One of the ventilation cages found in the interactive queue has Rosita’s name on it! In fact, canaries were actually used to detect toxic gases in mines and alert miners. So, there’s another bonus history fact for you!
    • We don’t imagine that’s quite a pleasant spot for Rosita to rest, though.

12. Refurbishments for Safety:
    • Over the years, the rides have undergone several refurbishments to improve safety. They also updated effects to enhance the overall guest experience. This ensures that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad remains a beloved attraction for visitors of all ages. 
    • Enchanted Tiki Room isn’t the only Easter Egg on this mining expedition. There are plenty of nods to old attractions and lands that never were.
    • When Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened in Disneyland, it took the spot of Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland, which was an extension of an attraction formerly Rainbow Caverns Mine Train.
    • To tribute the demolished train ride through the woods and desert, Imagineers introduce Guests to rainbow-colored caverns at the beginning of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
    • Since Disney World’s version is almost a replica of Disneyland’s, the rainbow caverns are in Magic Kingdom as well. Mineshaft #71 also nods to the opening year of Magic Kingdom: 1971.
    • Not many Guests know that Frontierland’s original plans for extension after Magic Kingdom’s opening did not include Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
    • Imagineers originally envisioned a boat-style ride called Western River Expedition to be the main attraction for the extension. However, when Guests expressed interest for a ride similar to Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean, the idea was canned.
    • However, “Western River Explosives” can be found on the queue for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Is there really a bad time to go to Walt Disney World? I would consider going in any month. You can find pros for visiting each month of the year in my opinion.

A trip to Walt Disney World in January can be the best time to go with beautiful weather, low crowds, and savings.  Use our crowd calendar for January 2025, to help you achieve the best trip that you can for you.

January is historically the coldest month of the year in Florida. Most of the time this doesn’t mean it’s too cold for the theme parks though. If you want to beat the heat of the summer months, January is a great time to do just that.

Is January a Good Month to go to Disney World?

January is a great month to plan your next Walt Disney World Vacation. If you like lower crowds and cold weather, this is a good time for you.

Is it better to go to Disney in January or February?

Both months have similar weather and crowd levels and are a good choice. I would look at your available dates in both months and choose the best date for you between the two months.

I would avoid holidays and special events in either month like the Marathon Weekend.

Is it worth going to Orlando in January?

Absolutely it is worth going to Orlando in January if you like lower crowds and cooler weather. Keep in mind the Disney Parks may have less open hours and events due to the lower crowds.

As of January 2024, you no longer need theme park reservations. You will purchase the date-based tickets for a January 2025 Disney vacation. If you have a non dated theme park ticket like an annual pass you may still need to make reservations.

What Are Crowds Like at Disney World in January?

January can be a wonderful time to visit Disney World thanks to the low crowds. However don’t just assume that all of January is a low crowd month. 

You have some important holidays such as New Years Day, and Martin Luther King Jr Day. These holidays can lead to larger crowds at the start of the month. 

If you go before about mid month expect to see some staggered Christmas decorations. The first few days of January will have higher crowds as guests leave for their December Christmas Disney trips.

RunDisney also has a marathon weekend in January this year from January 8th to January 12th. This weekend will have high crowd levels.

Mid-January to the end of January, after the 15th will be the lowest crowds for the month.

The Disney World Crowd Calendar is an estimate and may not be completely accurate. Attractions opening like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in ‘late 2024’ may impact January 2025 crowds. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure replaces the Splash Mountain ride in Magic Kingdom.

Special Events at Disney World in January

• EPCOT International Festival of the Arts:
  • At EPCOT, the yearly Festival of the Arts will return. The festival dates have not been announced for 2025 yet. The dates are typically mid January to mid February. 
  • This festival while fun, isn’t as interactive like the Food and Wine or Flower and Garden festival. However do expect a slight bump in EPCOT traffic after this festival starts, especially on the weekends and Florida residents check out the offerings.

• RunDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend:
  • January also has a short window for the runDisney events. This year it’s being hosted on January 8th-12th of 2025.
  • All of the in-person events for January will be open for registration on April 2, 2024. Reservations will sell out fast if you are interested in this event. If you’d like to run virtually you can still sign up, and participate.

The winter months tends to have the shortest operating hours.

One of the best parts of visiting Disney World in January is the weather. If you visit Orlando during January through April you will have the opportunity to experience mild temperatures and lack of rain.

So if you have the hopes of January to be a great time to hit the water parks, you might be disappointed.  While it is true if you are looking to hit up one of the best pools at Disney World, you can. The pools are heated to 82°F….but it doesn’t mean getting out of the water won’t be freezing.

Week 1: High 72°F, Low 48°F
Week 2: High 74°F, Low 52°F
Week 3: High 76°F, Low 55°F
Week 4: High 77°F, Low 54°F

The good news is that there aren’t many rainy days in January. It is not hurricane season and only about five days a month have rain. 

Is it too cold to go to Disney World in January?

Typically the high temperatures are around 75°F with cooler temperatures being about 50°F. Cold for Central Florida is not the same cold weather most of us from Northern states are used to.

The pools are heated to 82°F making swimming possible all year round, even in January. You have to love Florida weather right?

You can leave your heavy jackets, hats, and gloves at home!

What to Wear to Disney World in January

As we mentioned in the weather section of this piece, it can be a mix of warm and down right cold in January. So you will want to lighter clothing, and you might want to consider a sweater just in case for those cooler evenings.

Enjoy tanning those shoulders in a tank top, and wear them with regularly applied sunscreen. Give your skin a break and pack those matching family t-shirts you’ve been dying to wear and take photos in!

Don’t forget your bathing suit! If you’re staying at a deluxe or even some moderate resorts, they may have a hot tub as well as heated pools. Sadly the value resorts do not have hot tubs. 

If you’re willing to try Disney’s Swan, Swan Reserve, or Dolphin resorts, they have over 5 different hot tubs to choose from, best of all you can score heavily discounted room rates for this resort if you go in January.

It’s a good idea to bring layers and comfortable walking shoes with you. You may want a light jacket at night or early mornings when the temperature drops. I would also bring a pair of long pants for the colder days.

Disney Bounding in January

This is a great time to try out different outfits for Disney Bounding! Some of your heavier outfits that require layers will be perfect for this time of year.

Belle’s blue dress with a long-sleeved shirt underneath is perfect for January without overheating. This outfit has a lot of layers which would not be ideal in the summer.

This is the perfect time to use any athletic wear leggings for your Disney Bound outfits.

Can you wear sandals in Florida in January?

You can wear sandals to Florida in January most of the time with a few exceptions. High temperatures in the 70s are still warm days that are perfect for sandals or flip flops. Early mornings and nighttime may be a little cold for sandals as temperatures are in the 50s.

It is also a great idea to wear your tennis shoes as well since your feet won’t be sweating quite as much. 

What to Pack for Disney World in January

Do not forget to pack and apply sun screen often if you’re going to be at Disney World. We would recommend a bare minimum of SPF 30 for your sunscreen protection. 

If you forget your sunscreen, most resorts will have a store that will have sundries you can purchase. You also have the option to get items delivered from the grocery store or Walmart directly to your hotel. I’ll link below the information you need when doing so.

Don’t forget to pack your favorite pair of sunglasses, and hat as well. The sun is still bright in January in Florida.

I’m a fan of Shady Ray sunglasses, as they donate 1 meal with each order, they are quality glasses at reasonable prices, and even will replace them if you lose them when you don’t remember to take them off during Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. 

That might have happened once or twice to me, and the customer service replacements are quick, and painless.

You may want to bring a small backpack to help you carry light layers with you. This is important for comfort if you plan to rope drop during early entry and stay until the park closes.

You can leave your rain gear and poncho at home this time of the year if you don’t have a lot of room in your suitcase.

If it happens to be one of the few days with rain you may want your rain gear. The parks will clear out with rain and you can enjoy the short lines!

How to Get A Deal on a Disney World Vacation in January

As you can see here are a few events that will cause resorts prices to go up. You can still save a good amount of money, especially if you’re flexible by staying on-site vs off-site. 

Avoid trying to book the first week of January due to New Year’s Day, and the runDisney Marathon events. Also avoid Martin Luther King Jr. Day as well, as it will be a 3 day weekend for those with kids. The 2nd half of the month is the least busy.

If you are interested in camping, this is an opportune time, as the weather outside isn’t still fresh. If you are looking for information for Camping at Fort Wilderness, we have linked to our guide for what you need to know. 

Campsites can go for about $89 a night, before any discounts.  

Use Priceline to get an idea of the resort prices – call direct. The Swan and Dolphin Resort has discounts for teachers and nurses for example. If you have access to Annual Pass Discounts, or military, again make sure you login when you are checking on the Disney website.

Priceline, Costco, and Undercover tourist is a great way to look for discounts in January. Keep in mind that these discounted rates typically have the most issues on their vacation if anything goes wrong.

If the holidays have you longing for some Sun and Disney magic, I’d consider booking a trip to Disney World. Flights can be had cheaper usually as everyone already traveled during the December holiday season. We still recommend booking dining reservations 60 days before your trip.

It would be a great time for those that enjoy being outside walking, not in the pool, as the air temperature is going to be cozy average at 73°F during the day, but chill at night time potentially dropping before 50°F at night.

When is Easter 2024?

Easter this year is on Sunday, March 31^st, 2024. It’s a popular time of year for both domestic and international travelers. Easter this year falls in the middle of the busy Spring Break season. This is the 2nd busiest time of the year next to Christmas time so expect high spring break crowds.

We recommend booking your Disney resort now before it’s too late to make sure you don’t miss out on your ideal trip for this time of the year.

Will Disney World be Open on Easter Sunday

Disney World is open on all major holidays, including Easter Sunday.  They may have additional or special selections at restaurants. 

Double check any reservation to ensure the dining experience is what you want. For example, some places will have a different menu or fixed menu instead of a buffet option.  

Guests may be dressed up to celebrate the holiday, so feel free to theme your outfit for the day. 

Does Disney World Do Anything Special for Easter?

Easter is a special time at Disney World! Every year, across Disney property the theme park celebrates with a variety of fun activities for families to enjoy. Guests can attend an Easter egg hunt, explore special Character Meet-and-Greet events, and experience festive decorations. 

There are also limited time menu items celebrating the holiday season, including themed treats like chocolate eggs, marshmallow bunnies, a carrot cake cupcake, and delicious pancakes made by the talented pastry teams. Is There Easter Service at Disney World 2024?

Walt Disney World usually hosts religious service on Easter Sunday. In the past Catholic Mass has been offered. These church services are typically held in the Fantasia Ballroom of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. 

However, to attend these services, you’ll need to follow specific transportation and parking guidelines due to parking restrictions at the resort.

Experience the Egg-Stravaganza Scavenger Hunt in Epcot

If you’re looking for something a little different and fun this year, make sure you check out the Egg-stravaganza Easter Egg Hunt. Every year, it takes place at the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. Find these eggs in the World Showcase.

The really cool thing about this Easter Egg hunt is that it features the characters of Disney. As you find the different eggs, you’ll also be able to record what is found on a special map. And don’t forget, if you get stumped, make sure and ask cast members for a little help.

When you enter the park, keep in mind that you can buy maps and stickers for the event. These maps and stickers can be found at Pin Central, Disney Trader, and World Traveler. Once you find all of the eggs on the map, you can head to Disney Traders and get a really fun surprise! 

Is There an Easter Bunny at Disney World?

Kids of all ages will want to grab their Easter basket and get a photo with Mr. Easter Bunny & Mrs. Bunny, located in the Magic Kingdom. Capture your kids with the springtime characters or let the PhotoPass photographer take a picture of the whole family!

Spike’s Pollen Nation Exploration

Extend the spring experience at Disney by checking out Spike’s Pollen Nation Exploration. Don’t worry, this is a simple activity that the whole family will love. It also takes place during the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. 

Head to Port of Entry and get your maps and stickers for Spike’s Pollen Nation Exploration. As you go to each garden, you’ll look for a picture of Spike and search the Spike pollinated- pollinated plants. As you or the kids find the plants, they can add a sticker to the map. And per usual, once the scavenger hunt is complete, you can return it for a prize. 

What are Disney Easter Eggs?

Disney Easter eggs are at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, a luxurious hotel in Walt Disney World. You can find the Eggs along with a themed gingerbread house displayed during the holiday season. The grand cottage is truly a magical experience.

Additionally, the resort’s lobby and rooms may feature subtle nods to classic Disney films and characters. Exploring the resort becomes a delightful treasure hunt, where every detail and decoration could reveal a magical Disney secret.

​As a former teacher and a Disney lover, I have looked for all the Disney teacher discounts! I know Educators are not paid enough for what they do, so take advantage of every discount you can! Maximize those discounts on your next Disney World vacation.

Unfortunately Disney World doesn’t offer special rates for teachers. This is definitely a missed opportunity from the Walt Disney Company! 

There are some places you can get special discounts near Disney though. It is no secret that Disney World can be an expensive vacation. 

​I’ve put together a guide about all of the discounts teachers can take advantage of when planning a trip to Disney theme parks.

​Do Teachers Get Discounts At Disney World?

​Currently, there are no discounts or special offers for teachers. This includes purchasing Disney theme park tickets, merchandise, or dining experiences. 

​However, some hotels offer discounted prices for current teachers! Some happen throughout the year. Some are specifically available during teacher appreciation week. However, Disney has been known to provide various discounts and promotional offers that can benefit educators in different ways. 

These discounts are through hotel stays, dining, and shopping within the resort. These offers might be available through third-party organizations, educational institutions, or during special events and promotions.

Teachers looking for discounts at Disney World should consider these tips:

1. Check with Educational Organizations: Some educational organizations and teacher unions offer discounts on travel and entertainment, including Walt Disney World theme parks. It’s worth checking with organizations you’re a member of.
2. Disney Springs Hotels: Occasionally, hotels in the Disney Springs area offer discounts to teachers and other groups. These hotels provide proximity to the Disney parks and sometimes include additional benefits like Early Entry if they are good neighbor hotels.
3. Promotions and Special Offers: Disney World regularly runs promotions that can provide significant savings on hotel stays, dining plans, and ticket packages. While these aren’t exclusive to teachers, they can help make a Disney vacation more affordable.
4. Educational Programs: Disney Youth Education Series (YES) Programs offer discounted tickets for groups of students and educators participating in educational experiences at the parks. Do Teachers Get In For Free At Disney?

Sadly, teachers and employees of schools cannot get free theme park tickets. This would be a great Teacher Appreciation week promotion though, Disney if you’re listening.

What Discounts Can Teachers Get?

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels both offer special room rates with savings of up to 25% off. All you need to do is contact them at 1-888-828-8850 and ask for the promotional code TEACHERS RATE. The Swan & Dolphin resorts are one of our favorites to stay, and every better they offer a teacher rate!

If you book your hotel reservations online, be sure to check that the Promotional Code ZTC appears in the promo code box. At check-in, you will need to show a valid teacher or school-issued ID to show proof of employment.

The Disney Springs resort area hotels also offer discounts to educators and school support staff. You can find discounts at the following hotels:

• B Resort & Spa
• DoubleTree Suites by Hilton
• Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando
• Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace
• Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista
• Holiday Inn Orlando Disney Springs

The hotel for the Disney Springs hotels states that guests need to book between May 15 and August 15. Discounts are still available so be sure to check them out here. These are not official Walt Disney World Resorts. They do still offer many of the same accommodations such as transportation to the parks.

Availability may be limited due to popularity and blackout dates, so check out this discount as soon as possible.

How To Use A Teacher’s Discount At Disney World?

For most teacher discounts, you can find promo codes online and will be expected to show your teacher ID when checking in to the hotel. Sadly, these discounts may not apply to homeschool teachers. 

Does Disney World Have Discounts For Class Field Trips?

Disney offers a wide variety of experiences for students to enjoy. Especially for those looking for a future career in entertainment. A visit to the Disney Campus website can provide you with everything you need to know about class field trip prices for students. As well as the performance and workshop options they can participate in. 

These offerings are available at both Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida.

May is one of the best times of year for anyone looking to plan a trip to Walt Disney World. You’ll enjoy near-perfect weather, lower crowds, and the chance to plan a little bit less for your trip. 

Today we’re going to discover what you can expect from a trip in May 2024. If you haven’t booked your vacation for May yet, we highly recommend looking at resort and dining reservations as soon as possible. 

The more you can plan in advance for your upcoming trip, the more you’ll get out of your vacation to Walt Disney World Resort this year.

Is May A Good Month To Go To Disney World?

While May is generally a great month to visit the parks, there are of course pros and cons to any time of the year. Let’s take a look at what you can expect from your upcoming May Disney vacation.

Pros of a May Disney Trip

• International Flower & Garden Festival – You can enjoy this festival while visiting EPCOT at any time in May to take part in the festivities. This is my favorite of the four EPCOT festivals.
• Less Planning Needed – Compared to other times of the year, you can go with the flow a little more on a May trip. You won’t have to worry quite as much about securing your park and dining reservations. We still recommend booking as far ahead as possible. If you’re considering using Genie+, check out our guide on how to make your trip even better.
• Lower Crowd Levels – With very few holidays or special events in May, the crowd levels are some of the lowest of the whole year. You’ll find that this makes touring the parks easier. Another low crowd month to consider is September. There are also some great deals on hotels at this time, making a trip to Disney a little more affordable. If you’re looking to save even more money on your next Disney Vacation, consider Rope Drop at Hollywood Studios to get on your must do rides.

Cons of a May Disney Trip

• Love Bugs – If you’ve never visited at this time of the year before, you’ll find the love bugs to be particularly annoying. Their season lasts about four weeks but usually falls over a good amount of May. If you want hot weather without love bugs, consider August or July.
• Hot Weather – I love the Central Florida warm weather that’s perfect for pool days and water parks. It can be too hot in the Disney parks for some though not at hot as the summer months. If cooler weather is the most important thing to you, you may want to try January, February, March, April, November, or December instead.

How Busy Is Disney World In May?

The beginning of the month and mid May aren’t typically busy as kids are still in school. Spring break season is fortunately over by May. There are usually low or moderate crowd levels at the beginning of the month until the end.

The end of May starts the busy summer season as schools start to end and families start their summer traveling adventures. Memorial Day weekend is a busy and popular time for a Disney World trip.

There really aren’t any months with low crowds anymore though the busiest time are impacted by school schedules. You can expect a fair amount of people to be in the parks at any time of the year. You can find times that are better for your Disney World Vacation though.

If you look at Walt Disney World Crowd Calendars were not as accurate last year in 2023 predicting crowd levels at the parks. 

What Are The Special Events At Disney World In May?

• Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival – At this point, the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival has been in full bloom for the past two months. If you are visiting the parks for the first time this year, you’ll love seeing Epcot decorated for this festival. It’s one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit the parks, and you’ll enjoy dining around the world from the Outdoor Kitchens. Be sure to read up on our Flower and Garden Festival Guide – so you know how to plan your trip. This is my favorite EPCOT festival to visit at Disney World.
• Star Wars Day – While the events for this occasion vary from year to year, it’s a fun time to celebrate May the 4th in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Especially with the recent addition of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, we expect crowd levels to be higher on this day with Star Wars fans from around the world.
• Cinco De Mayo – This holiday won’t bring heavy crowds to all of the Disney Theme Parks either, but EPCOT may be busier than usual. The Mexico Pavilion may be much busier than normal as this is a good time to get a Margarita.

Holidays in May at Walt Disney World

• Mother’s Day –Mother’s Day in the US falls on a Sunday in mid may every year. While this day doesn’t necessarily increase out-of-town visitors, you’ll find many locals head to the parks or restaurants to celebrate with their extended family. Some of the restaurants put on special menus for this day, so it’s well worth booking your advance dining reservations ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
• Memorial Day Weekend – Memorial Day Weekend takes place over the last Monday in May every year. While May is generally a great month for lower crowds, this would be the one exception. By this time, more families are starting to head down to Orlando for a summer break, and this is officially the start of the busy summer season. Try to avoid traveling this weekend if you can, as you’ll find reservations are much harder to come by.

Disney World Theme Park Operating Hours In May

As May is one of the quieter months of the year, don’t expect the park hours to be too long. Disney has yet to officially post their hours for the month, but this is a rough idea of what you can expect based on past trends. 

As we get to the end of the month, you’ll find that these soon increase, ready for the heavier summer crowds. Keep in mind that Disney keeps adjusting their park hours for the month a few weeks ahead of time, so make sure you check back to the Disney site just before your visit to confirm opening hours.

• Magic Kingdom – 9 am to 9 pm
• Epcot – 10 am to 9 pm
• Disney’s Hollywood Studios – 9 am to 9 pm
• Disney’s Animal Kingdom – 9 am to 7 pm
• Water Parks – Typhoon Lagoon is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Blizzard Beach’s reopening date has yet to be confirmed but is likely to reopen in time for the summer crowds.
• Disney Springs – 10 am to 11 pm

May is one of our favorite times of the year to visit Walt Disney World. Adults will love visiting before the heavy summer crowds, and there are fewer kids and families in the parks. As with visiting Disney at any time of the year, we still recommend you book your resort and dining ahead of time.

This will help you to make the most of your time here and enjoy everything that Disney has to offer for visitors.

How Is The Weather At Walt Disney World In May?

Without a doubt, May is one of the best times of the year to visit Orlando. You’ll enjoy great weather most days, with highs of up to 85-90 degrees. Average high temperatures are in the 70s and 80s.

The weather doesn’t typically drop below 64 degrees, so even average low temps at night-time in the park doesn’t get too cold. It’s a great time to upgrade your stay to a resort with a great swimming pool, such as the Yacht & Beach Club.

There are only about seven days of rain in the month. The only thing to be aware of at this time of the year are the pesky love bugs. Love bugs are not harmful, but can be a nuisance when you are trying to relax at the pool.

Is it too hot to go to Disney World in May?

It’s not too hot in Disney World in May as average temperatures are in the 70s and 80s. It can be in the 90s in May though so prepare for hot and sunny days. If you are heat sensitive, it may not be the best time to go to Disney World.

Does it rain a lot in Disney in May?

There are typically about 7 days in the month that are rainy, so May does not have a lot of rainy days compared to other months. 

It may be a good idea to bring your rain ponchos or a rain jacket just in case. The parks tend to empty in the rain so you can avoid long lines if you come prepared for the rain.

Umbrellas are also allowed in the parks. You will want to pack a small umbrella in your Disney Park Bag just in case.

What To Wear To Disney World In May?

Check the weather forecast for the most accurate Florida weather to plan what to wear. May is pretty hot so you will want warm weather clothing items like shorts, t-shirts, and tank tops. 

You won’t need a long sleeve shirt this time of year. 

The most important thing to bring with you is a comfortable pair of shoes. Comfortable walking shoes can make such a big difference in how much you enjoy your Walt Disney World vacation.

This time of year is also perfect for dresses and skirts with bike shorts underneath for all of the walking. Check out our packing list below for more on what to wear.

Disney Bounding in May

Mays weather is beautiful and the perfect time for that cute outfit you want to Disneybound with. I would avoid a heavy outfit with a lot of layers this time of year. Opt for your simple and comfortable warm weather Disneybound outfits in May.

Costumes are not allowed for guests over 14 in the parks so there isn’t confusion for kids. Disney-bounding is a great way to celebrate your favorite character and enjoy the magic on your trip. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is the exception where you can wear costumes.

What to Pack for Disney World in May

Do not forget to pack and apply sunscreen often if you’re going to be at Disney World. We would recommend a bare minimum of SPF 30 for your sunscreen protection. If you forget your sunscreen, most Disney resorts will have a store that will have sundries you can purchase. 

You also have the option to get items delivered from the grocery store or Walmart directly to your hotel. I’ll link below the information you need when doing so.

Do you need a jacket in Florida in May?

Bringing a light jacket or sweater with you in May is a good choice for the cooler temperatures in the morning or evening. Low temperatures can be in the 60s at night so it’s a great idea to have a lightweight jacket just in case.

Is Purchasing Genie+ During The Month Of May Worth It?

If you are going Memorial Day weekend or the last week of May, Genie+ is worth it. Crowds will be heavier at this time so it’s worth the extra cost for Genie+.

If you are going at the beginning of the month, you can get away with not purchasing Genie+. This is especially true if you use Early Entry or Rope Drop in the mornings to get on rides.

Is it better to go to Disney World in May or June?

Milder weather and lower crowd levels make May a better month to go to Walt Disney World.

There is never a bad time to go to Walt Disney World so June can also be a great month. June will have higher crowd levels with kids out of school. June will also be warmer than May.

May is one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit Walt Disney World. Between Star Wars Day and the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival, there’s no shortage of things to do even if you’ve visited dozens of times before.

Haunted Mansion is a classic ride that my husband’s family must ride every trip. The theming is seriously spooky and the special effects creep me out. 

The 999 happy haunts started greeting guests and became a fast favorite among morbid mortals. From the interactive queue up through the tour of the mansion on the famous “Doom Buggies,” this dark ride attraction brings eternal delight to guests of every age.

The Haunted Mansion at Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, the same day the Magic Kingdom park opened to the public. The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland Park in California opened in 1969.

Our tour begins here with 13 Fun Facts about the Haunted Mansion you probably didn’t know!

1. Imagineers had Artistic Differences: Marc Davis and Claude Coats were fresh off the boat from designing Pirates of the Caribbean. Based upon its success they were thought to be a great pair for the completion of the Haunted Mansion. They didn’t see eye-to-eye in their vision for this gloomy attraction. Coats wanted a spookier, ominous atmosphere for the Haunted Mansion. Davis envisioned a laidback experience with plenty of humor. This is why the queue and the beginning of the attraction give you quite a chill. The ending in the graveyard might provoke a few laughs with the hilarious singing heads and hitchhiking ghosts! Luckily, their adversities didn’t prevent them from producing a classic attraction. An attraction that is cherished by mortals and spirits alike!
2. Walk-Through Attraction: Walt had hoped his idea for a haunted mansion could debut with the opening of Disneyland in 1955. With budget restraints, it got pushed back. When the time came to focus on the project again, it would no longer be a simple façade located on the end of Main Street. It was reimagined as a walk-through attraction for Guests where they could explore the mansion and learn its backstory at their own pace. It followed the story of Bartholomew Gore who kills his wife when she finds out he’s a pirate. Over the years, it evolved into the beloved attractions we have today.
3. Real Tombstones: Some of the tombstones in the queue honor Imagineers who worked on the Haunted Mansion, with playful epitaphs.

4. Familiar Voices: Did you ever ride through the mansion on your Doom Buggy and think, “Now where have I heard that voice before?” They probably strike you as familiar because some characters in the Haunted Mansion share the same voice as some of your favorite Disney characters! The singing busts in the graveyard scene include Thurl Ravenscroft, famous for singing “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and for being the voice of Tony the Tiger. Madame Leota’s voice is none other than Eleanor Audley, who voiced Maleficent and Lady Tremaine! The voice of your famous Ghost Host was supplied by Paul Frees, who voiced Boris in The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and provided narrations for many Disney attractions. The Voice of the Ghost Host: “Grim Grinning Ghosts” the theme song of Haunted Mansion is voiced by Paul Frees, who also provided the voice for characters like Ludwig Von Drake and Boris Badenov.
5. Madame Leota: Named after Imagineer Leota Toombs, Madame Leota’s face appears in the crystal ball. The voice, however, is provided by Eleanor Audley, who also voiced Maleficent in “Sleeping Beauty.” It is rumored that her daughter, Imagineer Kim Irvine was responsible for the Pet Cemetery at the Haunted Mansion.
6. Different Experiences: The Haunted Mansion has variations at many of the Disney Parks. Haunted Mansion appears in Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris (known as Phantom Manor), each with unique elements and backstories. If you have ridden both Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion, you’ll notice they’re quite similar. That’s because they were built at the same time! Since Disney World’s Haunted Mansion would haunt Guests only two years after Disneyland’s premiere of the attraction, the Animatronics, set design, and props were assembled and built simultaneously! However, they look different from the outside, as Disneyland’s is themed around New Orleans Square and Disney World’s is based on Liberty Square. Hong Kong Disneyland does not have a Haunted Mansion attraction. Instead, it features “Mystic Manor,” a unique and magical take on the haunted house concept, showcasing the adventures of Lord Henry Mystic and his mischievous monkey, Albert, through a collection of mystical artifacts from around the world, employing advanced technology and special effects to create a one-of-a-kind experience.
7. Innovative Effects: The attraction uses a variety of optical illusions, including the famous “Pepper’s Ghost” technique, to create its ghostly effects.
8. Interactive Queue: The queue at Disney World’s Haunted Mansion features interactive elements, including a musical crypt and a bookcase that requires guests to solve a puzzle. In the queue, there’s a ring embedded in the concrete. The ‘Bride’s Ring” is part of the storyline involving the Mansion’s bride character.
9. The Stretching Room: This iconic room actually stretches upward in Disney World, not downward as in Disneyland, because there’s no need to transport guests below ground level.

10. Hidden Mickey: Keep an eye out for Hidden Mickeys throughout the Mansion, including one in the banquet scene.
11. Master Gracey: Named after Yale Gracey, one of the key Imagineers for the attraction, the Master Gracey portrait hangs in the foyer.
12. Unique Wallpaper: The iconic wallpaper in the Haunted Mansion has a distinctive design featuring sinister faces and is one of the most photographed aspects of the ride.
13. Hatbox Ghost: Although the Hatbox Ghost is a prominent figure in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion, it inspired similar ghostly lore in Disney World’s version.

These facts only scratch the surface of the depth and complexity of the Haunted Mansion. It reflects Disney’s commitment to storytelling and innovation.

How to Save Money at Disney World?

You can save money in so many ways at Disney World. Save money on drinks, dining, snacks, tickets, resorts or hotels, transportation, souvenirs, and so much more with our 100 tips to save money.

Taking a Disney vacation can be a magical time for any family, but it can also be an expensive one.  So I have gathered the tips my husband and I use to save money throughout the years, and I hope they will help you stretch the magic just a little further.

Here are a few things to remember as you try to save on your trip:

• Avoid going into debt for your vacation (it’s not worth the stress later on).
• Don’t feel bad if you don’t buy a souvenir; chances are it won’t be used for long.
• No matter what, you’re in Disney World. Enjoy your vacation!
• You are on vacation, so slow down, and breathe, and everything will be okay.
• It’s alright to indulge some; this isn’t everyday life, just budget for the extras.

​Save Money on Drinks at Disney World

1. Drink Tap Water Instead of Soda: Much cheaper and keeps you hydrated in the hot Florida sun.
2. Stay Hydrated with Free Water: Instead of buying bottled water, get a cup of free ice water from any quick-service restaurant.
3. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle: Free water is available at quick-service locations and bottle filling stations. Refillable Water bottles make staying hydrated easy. In EPCOT there are two bottle filling stations one is near the Canada Pavilion at the Odyssey. The other is near the refreshment port. In Magic Kingdom there is a bottle filler near Tron. In Hollywood Studios there is a bottle filler in Star Wars Land in the marketplace. Animal Kingdom’s bottle filling stations are in line queues for both Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. You can also fill bottles of water at any of the resort dining areas on Disney property and at the water park.
4. Limit Alcohol Purchases: These can be quite pricey in the parks.
5. Don’t buy the Refillable Mugs at Disney World resorts: Seems easy enough right? Don’t be tempted by sodas and you can save quite a bit at every meal while at Disney World or anywhere really.  You can refill the mugs at any Disney resort while there, in case you decide to do some resort hopping after hitting up the parks. However you can no fill up the mugs while in the parks, including the water parks. You can ask for a free cup of ice water at any location that serves fountain drinks, including bars. That in itself is a park hack, to get ice water often, and stay hydrated! You will combat the often salty foods, and avoid dehydration. That said, if you’re staying on site for 3 or more nights, and you’re going to drink soda consider purchasing the refillable mugs at your resort.You can refill often, and you would need to get at least 2 refills per day to make it worth your while. Please note, that means coffee, tea or soda.

Save Money on Snacks

6. Use a Grocery Delivery Service: For in-room meals like breakfast and snacks. We did a cost comparison for groceries and found that Walmart was the cheapest delivery service. Check out the entire comparison and grocery tips: Grocery Delivery Tips for Walt Disney World.
7. Bring Your Own Snacks: Food in the park can be expensive. You can carry snacks and drinks into the park with you and even coolers. Disney’s only rule is no loose ice in coolers. You can use ice packs or bring plastic bags to fill with ice at your hotel.
8. Keep Snacks in Your Hotel Room: For late-night hunger. Having easy access to snacks in your hotel room will prevent you from impulse buying in the parks.
9. Use a Refillable Popcorn Bucket: If you’re a popcorn fan, it’s a good deal. It is one of the cheapest snacks you can buy at Disney World.
10. Snack on a Disney Pickle: This is another cheap snack you can find at the parks.
11. Bring a Small Backpack: To carry snacks and water.

Save Money on Disney Dining

12. Prepare Meals in Your Room: If you have a kitchenette like the DVC rooms do, you can make a full meal. This is a big perk for renting DVC points.
13. Plan a Picnic in Your Hotel Room: Or at free park areas. It’s easy to buy sandwich fixings and chips with your grocery delivery for cheap lunches or dinners. Make it fun by turning it into a picnic. You can bring your own food into Disney.
14. Eat Breakfast Before Arriving: To avoid high-cost meals in the park. Breakfast is an easy meal to eat in your room whether you have a kitchen or not. Grocery Delivery can save you so much money.
15. Choose Less Expensive Dining Times: Often lunch is cheaper than dinner. If you want to snag some sit-down reservations it will be cheaper at lunch time. Check out prices in the My Disney Experience App.
16. Research Restaurant Menus Online: To find affordable options, you can look on Disney’s website or the My Disney Experience App to budget for food. They will list prices for each restaurant there.
17. Eat at Disney Springs: Sometimes cheaper than in the parks.
18. Share Desserts: They’re often large enough or you can skip dessert to save money as well. Though I would find room in the budget for one Mickey Mouse Ice Cream. 
19. Book During Kids ‘Eat Free’ Promotions: At certain restaurants or hotels. As of today, January 30th, if you book through a travel agent you can get half off kids theme park tickets and dining for kids aged 3-9. The trips must be booked for March 3rd – March 24th or April 7th – June 30th. Look for “Kids Eat Free Promotions” on the Disney website for the most updated unformation.
20. Eat at Quick Service Restaurants: Quick-service dining is cheaper than sit-down restaurants. You can create a food budget by looking at the My Disney Experience App where the prices are listed.
21. Share Meals: Portions can be large. My husband and I often share meals especially when they are big to save money.
22. Use Disney’s Mobile Ordering Service: To save time and avoid impulse buys. You can mobile order on the My Disney Experience App.

23. Order Kid’s Meals: Ordering from the kid’s menu. We have been ordering from the kid’s menu for years now at quick-service restaurants, and table service (non-character meals).  Each kid’s meal comes with a half portion of whatever the adult size is (or basic items like chicken tenders and basic cheeseburgers) 
24.  Avoid Disney Dining Plans: You have to eat when you go on vacation, and Disney counts on you spending big money when you dine out. The Disney Dining Plan is often more expensive than you would typically spend on food while there especially if you use any of our money saving tips!
25. Lounges for Signature Restaurants Offer Great Food for Less: This is a great way to enjoy a last-minute trip to Disney World, and save money.  We rarely book signature restaurants and opt for sitting in the lounges and bars.  We have the best luck when we go to the lounges such as Steakhouse 71, Shula’s Steakhouse, Il Mulino, or California Grill.  My husband and I can share appetizers or larger meals along with a few beverages. If you have a larger crowd, for example 2 adults and 2 kids, try the lounges at Steakhouse 71 inside the Contemporary Resort, Ale and Compass Lounge or Crew’s Cup both located at the Yacht Club.  The perks at all three of these lounges is they have a more relaxed place to sit with like love seats, and couches.  Not to mention they are quieter and air conditioned from the Florida heat. Ordering off the menus there usually allow you to smaller version of the larger meals.  One of our favorite things at Steakhouse 71, for example, was getting the rosemary bread, with the sauces they have to offer.  It was an excellent value at $15 versus paying $150 for a full-on dinner. During the warmer months at Walt Disney World, I don’t always feel like eating a heavy full-on meal.
26. Skip Character Meals: You’re not paying for the food, you’re paying the high prices for the characters. Even if this is your first visit, try to see if the characters have a meet and greet somewhere else in the parks. If you research it out, you can find freebie opportunities to find where characters will be within the parks, and resorts such as hanging out by campfires, and there will be minimal to no waits to hang out with them. The best character meal that we would splurge on is Toppolinos Terrace Breakfast. 
27. Monitor Special Promotions: Like free dining plan offers.

Save Money on Theme Park Tickets at Walt Disney World

28. Skip the Park Hopper Option: If you won’t use the park hopper ticket, there is no need to spend the extra money. There is so much to do in every park that you can spend an entire day in each park. There are also a lot of options for activities at the resort, Disney Springs, and surrounding areas. Park hoppers allow for more flexibility, but they do cost extra money and can be a great way to save some money on tickets.
29. Skip paying for Lightening Lanes or Disney Genie Plus: One of the largest profit makers for the Disney Company per their shareholders call was the adoption of Lightening Lane by park goers. At $15 per day, per person, a family of four visiting just each park each day is looking at shelling out an extra $240. This does not include include more popular rides that can charge just up to $30 for just a single ride. This cost is also rising all the time and is subject to the time of year. These higher prices for Genie+ and ILL are additional costs for guests. Does anyone else miss the FREE fast pass system? If you’re like me and want to ride still everything the top attractions without waiting 3 hours, there is an answer.  Rope Drop.  We’ve written articles for rope dropping each park, and the basic note is, get up early for each park. 
30. Rope Drop: Rope Drop, Rope Drop, Rope Drop! Rope Drop is one of the easiest ways to avoid paying extra for Genie+ and being able to ride everything you want to.
31. Look for Discounted Disney Tickets through Authorized Sellers: But be wary of scams. Undercover Tourist is a great resource. Make sure you do your research before purchasing discounted tickets so you don’t get caught in a scam. There are many scams out there!
32. Avoid Peak Seasons: Prices for hotels and tickets are higher during holidays and summer. The time of year you go will impact both the cost of tickets as well as Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane costs. The cheapest months to go to Disney World are January and February.
33. Buy Tickets in Advance: Often cheaper than buying at the gate. You also run the risk of them being sold out or being at capacity if you try to purchase at the gate.
34. Consider Multi-Day Passes: Usually offer better value per day.
35. Check for Special Offers on Disney’s Website: Especially during off-peak times, Disney may offer discounts though that is becoming rare.
36. Consider Becoming an Annual Passholder: If you plan to visit multiple times a year or you are a Florida resident.
37. Plan a Non-Park Day: Relax at the hotel or explore free areas like Disney Springs. There are so many things to do without park tickets that will save you money on your family vacation!

Save Money on Resorts or Hotels

38. Priceline: We love to plan trips when resorts are cheap, as it helps indicate that Disney predicts that the crowds will be low during the visit. So that means less time waiting in lines, and more time in the actual attractions and saving money! That is how you win Disney in our minds! So we go to Priceline.com, putting in the dates we are thinking about.  We search for the area “Lake Buena Vista, Florida”.  Once the site loads it will show the discounts for Disney Onsite Resorts.  Sometimes you can even check out just Disney Resorts via a click from Priceline. You can get discounts on the deluxe resorts, but the real savings is when you see Pop Century or Coronado Springs Resorts being shown.  Compare them to what they are listed for on the official Disney website, but often times, often times you can see a $50 a night savings on Priceline.  If they aren’t listed, then it’s going to be a busier time, and suggest looking at another time.
39. Check for Educational Discounts: If you’re a teacher or student you can find deals on resorts like the Swan & Dolphin
40. Check for Medical Professional Discounts: Nurses and doctors can also find deals on some resorts like the Swan & Dolphin.
41. Use Military Discounts: Some resorts may offer a military discount. Shades of Green is also a resort that offers lower prices for military members and their families.
42. Look for Experience Packages: Sometimes they offer savings on food, lodging, and tickets.
43. Check the Official Disney Parks Blog: For current deals and offers.
44. Look for Free Parking Options: Some Disney Springs hotels offer free parking.
45. Check for Off-Season Rates: Lower prices for hotels and sometimes tickets.

Disney World Souvenirs – Save Money on Souvenirs

Buy your Disney souvenirs ahead of time: One of the things I learned when getting rose gold ears for our wedding, my husband looked on eBay and found brand new ears for $10 shipped from a seller that bought them in Disneyland Shanghai.  So instead of paying $30+tax for each pair, we were able to pick them up for $10 ahead of time. We were also able to find discounted Disney merchandise at the Disney Vineland outlet. Just a heads up, it’s a crapshoot sometimes going to the outlets. So if you have to take an Uber/Lyft there, considering checking out a few other shops and make it a short adventure.  Earlier in the days are recommended, as you can see the latest things before the Disney shoppers come in and buy the good stuff to resell on eBay or their own Facebook groups.
69. Walmart/Target nearby: They have large sections dedicated to Disney products, and they won’ be knock off tshirts, or in a questionable area.  Along with that you can pick up some groceries for snacking, double bonus win!
70. Check the Laundry Rooms At Disney World for Souvenirs: Now this is going to be an ultra cheap skate, along with being a hit or miss opportunity.  A number of guests leave items in the hallways, and laundry rooms such as snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. Some folks even leave their refillable mugs they didn’t want to take, now that might be a bit cringe worth post-pandemic, but hey if you’re down with it, no judgements here.
71. Join Disney Groups: The best way to get a heads up on a laundry room find, is to follow the resort you’re staying at Facebook groups. These are unofficial channels, but you can see if anyone has left something you can use while on your trip.  You can also pass it on, by giving back this way as well. When I leave my brother-in-law’s house in Celebration, I take the Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy to the airport to return.  On the right-hand side, you see an abandoned with overgrown landscaping and even curtains flapping in the afternoon sun.

I can’t imagine why one of the luxury hotel brands didn’t buy this location and turn it into another off-property hotel. It’s a more convenient location near so many theme parks. It is very close to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Universal Studios. It would be a huge hit for visitors to EPCOT or Magic Kingdom.

1. Character Meet and Greets
   • Meet characters like Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, and Winnie the Pooh at various locations within the pavilion.
   • You can meet Alice in Wonderland in front of the cottage next to the English Tea Garden.
   • You can meet Mary Poppins walking around and in various places. She sometimes stands near the water to the left of the Rose & Crown Pub or where Alice in Wonderland sometimes is.
   • There is a hidden place to meet Winnie the Pooh at the UK Pavilion in Christopher Robins Room at the back of the toy store. Not many people know that this meet & greet has returned, and many people have a difficult time finding the building.
   • Now you know exactly where to meet all of the characters!

2. British Revolution Performance
   • Enjoy a high-energy performance by this four-piece tribute band playing British rock music from the 1960s to the 1990s. Find the up to date showtimes in the My Disney Experience App.
3. DuckTales World Showcase Adventure:
   • This is a fun activity for kids to participate in to make the World Showcase more entertaining. Follow along with Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey, Louis, and Webby on this fun adventure. Find this interactive activity on the Play Disney Parks mobile app.
   • This game is played in multiple EPCOT Pavilions like Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Japan, France, and of course the United Kingdom.
4. Participate in Kidcot Fun Stops
   • Located throughout the World Showcase, including the UK Pavilion, Kidcot Fun Stops offer activities for children, such as collecting stamps and creating personalized souvenirs. It’s a fun and educational way for kids to learn about different cultures, including the UK.
5. Enjoy Seasonal Festivals
   • During various festivals, you’ll find additional stands and activities in the pavilion, adding to the experience. EPCOT has four seasonal festivals.
   • EPCOT’s Festival of the Arts

   • EPCOT’s Festival of the Holidays
   • You can usually find good food and a quick drink at each of the booths around the theme park during each festival. During these events, the UK Pavilion often features special booths, displays, or activities unique to the festival, providing a fresh and thematic experience each time.

   • EPCOT’s UK Pavilion often features live street performances. These can range from musical acts to comedic plays, providing an immersive and entertaining experience that captures the spirit of British street culture.

   • The pavilion is adorned with classic British symbols like red phone booths and a double-decker bus. These make for excellent photo opportunities, allowing you to capture memories of your visit in a distinctly British setting.

   • The UK Pavilion sometimes hosts storytelling sessions where guests can listen to tales inspired by British folklore and history. These sessions, often held in cozy corners of the pavilion, offer a delightful and educational experience for all ages.
9. Take a Break in the English Garden
   • Enjoy the beautiful flower beds, a miniature hedge maze, and a tea garden, reflecting the UK’s gardening style. Find the English Gardens at the back of the Pavilion.
   • On a hot day, grab a drink from the Yorkshire County Fish Shop and head back here to relax and cool down. Escape the crowds and relax in a recreation of a London street and garden, possibly while enjoying your fish and chips.
   • This garden area of the park is often overlooked but offers you a great place to take a break. Kids will love running through the small maze, and adults will enjoy strolling around the English garden.
   • The houses here are reminiscent of a London street, so you’ll feel like you’ve escaped the park completely back here.
10. Historical Research Center
    • Discover your family coat of arms or browse dragons and swords for sale. The Historical Research Center is located by the Crown & Crest store. This store offers an extensive library of family crests and coats of arms.
    • Any history buffs in your family will love learning more about their heritage while speaking to the cast members here. You’ll also find an incredible display of swords and dragons as you enter the store, all of which are available for purchase.
    • We looked up my family’s coat of arms while we were there and were able to find My Grandfather’s family crest from Norway
11. Admire the Architecture
    • The pavilion features a mix of architectural styles, including medieval castles, Victorian and Gregorian styles

12. Table-Service Restaurant
    • Enjoy British-style dishes like fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, and scotch egg, along with British brews and desserts like banoffee pie and rhubarb tart.
    • On a visit to the United Kingdom pavilion, you can’t miss dining in the Rose & Crown Dining Room.
    • If you’ve got time in your day, book a reservation to enjoy lunch or dinner here, where you’ll sample traditional British pub dishes while overlooking the World Showcase Lagoon.
    • Enjoy chatting with your server from the United Kingdom, who can recommend their favorite dishes and educate you about the various food and drink options available.
    • We highly recommend trying the Fish and Chips or Bangers and Mash for your entrée and make sure you save room for the Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert.
    • There’s also a fantastic live musician who plays here regularly, so try and time your meal with her performance. You can also see the fireworks from the restaurant if you time your dinner correctly!
13. Quick Service Options
    • At the Yorkshire County Fish Shop you can grab some authentic fish and chips at this quick-service spot, with outdoor seating offering views of the World Showcase Lagoon.
    • At the Rose & Crown Pub, where you can enjoy a refreshing alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink from the bar. Specialty drinks on offer here include Cider and Fireball, the Welsh Dragon, and the Leaping Leprechaun.
    • The third and final option for quick service locations is the UK Beer Cart with a few limited options for a quick bite to eat.

    • Visit shops like Sportsman’s Shoppe, The Crown and Crest, The Toy Soldier, and The Tea Caddy for a variety of British-themed merchandise.

    • The Tea Caddy in the United Kingdom pavilion offers so much more than just a regular shopping experience.
    • Enjoy browsing the extensive selection of Twinings tea products and British sweet treats on offer and speaking with the cast members who will be able to teach you about the differences between the various blends.
    • If you are lucky enough to visit during Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival, special events take place during this time, including tea tastings and tours of the tea garden behind the store.
15. Explore Themed Merchandise at UK Cart
    • Besides the main shops, the UK Cart in the pavilion offers unique souvenirs like Walt Disney World trading pins, UK-themed shirts, and various Minnie and Mickey Mouse plush toys.
    • It’s a great place to find exclusive memorabilia that celebrates both British culture and the Disney experience.

While most guests spend their time indoors exploring the pavilion’s stores, take your time to walk around the outside of the buildings. The pavilion’s design and architecture are influenced by the Victorian and Georgian periods. You’ll see a variety of influences within these buildings.

It’s fascinating witnessing the transition between the different time periods in each building. We love The Tea Caddy in particular, which is inspired by a traditional English cottage.

You could easily spend a couple of hours dining and shopping in the United Kingdom pavilion. On your next visit here, take the time to chat with the cast members who are from the UK, who will be happy to share their culture with you.

1. History of Space Mountain

Opened in Magic Kingdom in 1975, the original Space Mountain was the first roller coaster completely enclosed. This allowed for total darkness on the attraction!

This accomplishment set the bar for many roller coasters in the future. Now, 5 out of 6 Disney resorts showcase their own Space Mountain attractions. Would we experience the electrifying thrills of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster today if this hadn’t happened?

Space Mountain, the first indoor roller coaster of its kind and one of the most popular rides in Disney parks. It has a history as thrilling as the ride itself. The idea of Space Mountain developed from Walt Disney’s imagination.

2. Walt Disney’s Vision

Space Mountain was a pioneering indoor coaster dreamt up by Walt Disney himself. It was influenced by the success of the Matterhorn Bobsleds and perfected with the help of astronaut Gordon Cooper.

The project was postponed due to Walt Disney’s death and other challenges. It was eventually realized in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, marking a new era in roller coaster design.

In 1964, Walt Disney approached designer John Hench with the idea for an indoor dark roller coaster. This marked the beginning of a significant collaboration between the two. The concept, later known as ‘Space Mountain,’ was a revolutionary idea for its time. It aimed at recreating the thrill of a roller coaster and space travel.

However, the journey to bring Space Mountain to life wasn’t smooth. The original concept faced several challenges, including technological limitations.

4. First to Completely Rely on Computer Technology

This accomplishment was impressive for the 60s and 70s! With computer technology, the system can detect the weight of each vehicle and control the speed at which they move on the track.

Track sensors ensure that each vehicle is at least one brake away from each other; if they’re not, the computer systems will slow down the vehicle. (Ever notice this happen when you’re in the middle of riding an attraction? Cast Members call this “cascading.”).

This technology prevents collisions to keeps Guests safe. It also increases the efficiency of loading and offloading. Good thing this procedure is commonplace today!

5. Astronauts Consulted During Construction

To bring authenticity to the Space Mountain experience, astronaut Gordon Cooper was invited to serve as a creative consultant during the design phase. Cooper’s involvement was pivotal in creating a realistic portrayal of a space flight, based on his first-hand knowledge and experience.

Imagineers at Walt Disney World have a reputation to completely immerse themselves in research and theming in order to create authentic, accurate attractions. For Space Mountain, Imagineers reached out to Gordon Cooper.

Cooper was a real-life astronaut who was the first American to spend 24 hours in space. Imagineers researched in order to understand how it felt to travel through space and replicate that feeling. Cooper was welcomed back, along with his other fellow Mercury astronauts, when Space Mountain opened in Disneyland.

Cooper’s input played a pivotal role in shaping numerous facets of the attraction. It guaranteed a genuine representation of both the technology and the experience.

His continuous collaboration throughout the project significantly influenced the ride’s technological components. It also influenced the overall astronautic feel, making Space Mountain a truly immersive space voyage.

6. Space Mountain Around the World

Space Mountain’s original triumph in Magic Kingdom paved the way for its replication in Disney parks worldwide. This includes Disneyland’s Space Mountain.

From the single-track layout in Disneyland to the hyperspeed tunnel in Tokyo Disneyland. Each incarnation offers its unique spin on the classic space voyage. Each park showcasing different versions of Space Mountain.

Disneyland

In a unique construction feat, Space Mountain at Disneyland, Anaheim, was built 15 feet below ground level in compliance with local building regulations and to preserve the park’s aesthetic balance. One of the standout features of Disneyland’s Space Mountain is its unique seating configuration, where guests are arranged two by two. Additionally, an on-board music track was integrated into the ride in 1996. The music adds an extra layer of fun and excitement to the interstellar ride experience. Tokyo Disneyland

Space Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland echoes several elements from the original Disneyland version, including identical track layout and rocket designs. The ride underwent a significant refurbishment in 2006, and when Space Mountain opened again in 2007, it featured a more futuristic theme and new effects. The space port now showcases a futuristic spaceship hanging from the ceiling, enhancing the overall space voyage feel of the ride.

Disneyland Paris

Distinct from all other versions, Disneyland Paris’ Space Mountain features inversions, a launch, and a track section that leaves and re-enters the interior, offering a singular ride experience.

The original version of the ride, ‘From the Earth to the Moon’, featured a unique on-board audio track composed by Steven Bramson, inspired by John Williams’ film scores. This unique blend of music and space adventure added an extra layer of excitement to the ride, making it a standout experience in Disneyland Paris.

Hong Kong Disneyland

Space Mountain at Hong Kong Disneyland, which opened in 2005, mirrors the layout and soundtrack of the revamped version at Disneyland. However, it also includes a unique ‘hyperspeed’ tunnel, adding an extra layer of thrill to the ride experience.

Rockin’ Space Mountain

In a unique transformation, Rockin’ Space Mountain turned the classic attraction into a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in space. This overlay featured concert-style LED lighting and other unique special effects to enhance the rock concert atmosphere.

However, despite its initial success, Rockin’ Space Mountain was discontinued after its original run and was not brought back in subsequent years.

Ghost Galaxy

Ghost Galaxy began as a Halloween overlay for Space Mountain at Hong Kong Disneyland and later made its way to Disneyland during Halloween Time. This spooky overlay transformed Space Mountain with new lighting, ghostly images, and a haunting atmosphere, adding a new dimension to the ride.

The Ghost Galaxy entity, the main antagonist of the overlay, manifests as a nebula-like figure with a human face. This spectral nebula interacts aggressively with guests, attacking their rockets and overtaking the ride’s technology, creating a truly thrilling Halloween experience.

Hyperspace Mountain

For Star Wars fans, Hyperspace Mountain is a dream come true. This overlay transforms the classic Space Mountain ride into a Star Wars-themed adventure. From the soundtrack peppered with selections from John Williams’ iconic score to a mission towards the planet Jakku, Hyperspace Mountain offers guests an unforgettable intergalactic journey.

8. Queue Experience

The experience of Space Mountain begins even while you’re still in the space mountain queue. The queue features an area where guests can play interactive video games as they wait, serving as a fun diversion during long waits and allowing them to play Disney parks attractions like Space Mountain.

Not just that, the queue surrounds guests with an immersive atmosphere, punctuated by themed music and sounds that enhance the overall space-themed experience. It’s all part of the journey, building anticipation for the thrilling ride ahead.

9. Secrets and Easter Eggs

Join us on an interstellar treasure hunt as we unravel the hidden secrets and Easter eggs within Space Mountain. From the entrance of the ride, where the Moonliner pays homage to Disney’s history, to the queue where galaxies named after real star systems are presented as destinations, every corner of Space Mountain is filled with hidden gems.

Paying homage to Disney’s evolving history, the ride’s exit showcases a console that lists ‘closed sectors’ for past Disney attractions and ‘open sectors’ for the current ones. Even the robotic dog seen in the exit show scenes ties back to the ride’s original sponsor, RCA, making Space Mountain a treasure trove of Disney history.

In addition to historical nods, Space Mountain also pays tribute to the Imagineers who brought it to life. John Hench, the ride’s designer, is honored in the queue line, where details in the design give a nod to his envisioned future. Even within the rocket’s ascent by the lift hill, a tribute to Senior Imagineer John Hench and the ride’s opening year is visible on a spacecraft.

10. Spaceships Used to Be Glow in the Dark

Many adults swear that Space Mountain had glow-in-the-dark vehicles in the 80s, 90, and through the 2000s. That’s because it was true!

While there isn’t much research to suggest what made the spaceships glow in the dark (most guess blacklight), Guests could glow on their trip through outer space.

Unfortunately, in 2009, the decal was faded out with its scheduled refurbishment. Many Guests agree that they prefer almost complete darkness, as it feels more like they’re in outer space.

11. The Top Speed Is Only 28 mph

Seriously? It feels like we’re going so much faster! This speaks to how much our mind builds up situations when our senses are distorted. The dark aura and the constant jerks left and right make us feel like we’re going a lot faster than we actually are.
