Church to send 'Buckets of Compassion' to OK

Pastor Lonnie Grant and members of Barnesville Church of the Nazarene remember all too well the chaos caused by the deadly 2011 tornadoes that swept through the area. They were a drop point for donations and worked with FEMA, GEMA and Red Cross in the aftermath of the storms. To help in areas affected by the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma, they have started the Buckets of Compassion ministry and will send 150 buckets to equip volunteers there Saturday, May 25. The church is asking for members of the community to donate cases of water and gatorade to take to the storm-ravished areas.

Johnson, Lee lead LCCHS seniors Saturday

LCCHS Class of 2013 valedictorian A’Ja Johnson and salutatorian Rebekah Lee held a friendly competition – along with several other of their classmates – to see who would gain the honors. Both were shocked when they won it.

“I thought I was out of the running completely. If A’Ja didn’t make something I was going to be angry, especially since she took the hardest classes,” said Lee, adding the competition motivated everyone taking part to do better.

On the march: Class of '13 feted Saturday

The LCCHS Class of 2013, 155 seniors strong, will receive diplomas in graduation exercises set for Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

After colors are posted by the JROTC, multiple class members will have roles in the commencement. Kaylee McCormick will sing the National Anthem while STAR student Kendall Little will deliver the welcome.

First up, in the people are their own worst enemies department, is a strange tale from south Monroe County. Two brothers-in-law, ne’erdo- wells who lived with parents despite having survived three or four decades, went out clubbing while other family members were away.
