The word ‘Bellydance’ conjures up a myriad of images, connotations and fantasies and you are never quite sure of people’s reactions when it’s brought up in conversation. Types of bellydance are many and varied; my style has it’s origins in Egypt. It has a lifted, elegant posture but with the hipwork more grounded.

I’m Natalie Irvine and have been a bellydance performer, teacher and event organiser for the last seven years. I was told at the beginning that it usually takes about 10 years to become a ‘good’ bellydancer so I’m excited by the prospect at still having a few years ‘to make it’ and to see how Barreworks classes can help me with that goal!

Getting to the finish line... I wanted to write this blog a lot earlier than now. Just 3 days away from my 4th marathon, Paris 2015, the fact that I've finally got round to it is a clear indication that I'm in my tapering phase and looking for non-physical activities to keep my mind away from race nerves!

Many Barreworks regulars will know that I'm a keen runner and enjoy the occasional extra challenge of a full, or half-marathon or a less arduous 10k race every now and then. There's something about having a challenge set ahead of you to avoid the pitfalls of routine and give your exercise regime a boost with a competitive event.

Some of you have asked me how I find the time, energy or motivation to run in additon to all the hours spent at the barre...the truth is that I was lucky enough to discover running and barre exercise at the same time (some 10 years ago..!) and worked out pretty fast that the two disciplines have a LOT to thank each other for. Here's why...

Winter blues... This time of year really puts the screws on you. Not only are most of us trying to ‘be good’; save money, lose weight, keep to all kinds of unmanageable and oppressive resolutions, we’re also contending with miserable weather and dark nights that seem to go on forever.

Just at the time you need a good boost to your endorphins, someone switched the lights off and gave you every other reason not to go outside unless you can help it...

Amanda's journey...

Meet Amanda. Looking at her, you wouldn't imagine how such a stunning woman could be lacking in confidence and belief in what she could achieve. Amanda has changed so markedly since coming to Barreworks and her story is truly inspiring.

"For 12 months the pocket of my favourite rainy day jacket has held 1 hankie and 1 business card.

The hankie is there as an emergency (once a mum always a mum!) and the business card was for Barreworks collected in Sweaty Betty one rainy day upon purchasing something to “lounge” about in! Then one day, life changed..."

Question of the week... Wierd, wonderful, or just plain perplexing. If something's bugging you or you're just of a curious disposition, ask us anything (preferably related to your Studio workouts, our knowledge of quantum physics is a little limited!) and we'll do our best to answer...!

This week 'I've been taking regular classes for the past 3 weeks, I'll feel stronger, look better in my clothes, but my weighing scales tell me I've put ON weight! Arghh!'

Busting myths...

There's a lot of useful information out there surrounding diet, fitness, new techniques, old techniques, latest research and new-fangled innovations. There's also a whole load of 'stuff' to get confused about, waste your time

worrying about and get-all-excited thinking about, when the reality is that it's pure marketing spin, designed to get you buying magazines and signing up for pointless offers of this and that.

Because we want to save you time (time that could otherwise be spent at the barre..!) we've sifted through the nonsense and promise to bring you all the best bits of what we discover. All backed up by personal experience, knowledge and a whole lot of common sense.

Sleep yourself slim All sorts of things can cause poor sleep patterns and affect the quality of your Zzzzzs. And your body has extraordinary coping mechanisms to help you get through the day, week or month(s) that follow. Sometimes it just takes one crazy weekend or a short-lived stressful situation to send you into a cycle of exhaustion, frustration…and food cravings that un-do all the good effects of your workouts and leave you feeling even more sluggish.

Have you noticed that the more tired you are, the hungrier you get? Here’s why..

Stretch & burn...! What you might not know, but be pleased to discover is that stretching causes “Z-line ruptures.” That’s also how strengthening works. When you lift a weight, you cause tiny muscle tears that stimulate your muscle to build denser and stronger fiber as it repairs itself. That’s why you can be out of breath after a stretch sequence!

Emma Walker

The exceptionally photogenic and very determined Emma Walker has been a regular at Barreworks for almost three years. Emma is a Sports Journalist and packs in Barreworks classes around her hectic work schedule. We've been almost as excited as Emma in the count-down to her imminent wedding, getting every dress-adjustment update along the way.

Emma took it upon herself to put our magic mix of class formats to the test and see whether the perfect combination of barre workouts, deep stretching, ballet athleticism and more recently, learning good running technique could make even more difference to her body and mind. We had no idea this was her mission, nor that she had planned to write such a fantastic testament to her time at the barre...

Anne Sebba Anne discovered Barreworks nearly 2 years ago and she has found it an amazing tonic for her 'writers-back', sometimes even for the odd spell of 'writers-block'. Anne is an acclaimed Author and spends long hours at her desk. Now with nearly 200 classes under her belt, she's spending fewer hours at her desk and more at the barre. Just the way it should be!

Physio at the barre... Katherine Ready is a Barreworks veteran (in the most youthful sense of the word). She is also an exceptional Physiotherapist, one of Olympic-sized proportions. Katherine first came to Barreworks for her own enjoyment and has since worked closely with us to develop techniques as we continually strive to give you the best workout your body can get. Katherine even brought 'her girls' (Team GB Ladies Kayak) to the barre as part of their training. Their glutes were never the same again...

Katherine's first post as 'resident-Physio-expert-at-the-barre' will really get you can thank her when you see her quivering next to you at a class soon...

Shona's journey... Shona is nothing if not determined and the only thing that will keep her away from the barre is a head full of foils when her hair appointment runneth over...

Heather's journey... Heather is a fighter. Literally. You're as likely to see her at the barre, as at a Lindy-Hop dance or even in combat kicking the heck out of a few pads. Like her exercise interests, her humour is quite unique...
