Our fascinating cover story centered on an $850,000 dream home that was built in Michigan on barter. In 1997 that was a huge amount of money to pay for a home, in that area of the country. Mel Berg, a member of Michael Mercier’s Metro Trading Association, put together the property on Deer Lake, 30 miles NE of Detroit. It’s a motivational story you will want to read again and again.

The International Reciprocal Trade Association’s Barter Hall-of-Fame was introduced at its eighteenth convention, held at the Las Vegas Golden Nugget. In attendance were 244 industry stalwarts to observe this milestone.

Charter inductees included: Werner Zimmerman and Paul Enz, founders of WIR, the oldest and largest barter organization in the world, established in 1934 in Geneva, Switzerland. Their awards were presented posthumously, as was the award to Mac McConnell, the founder of Business Exchange in 1960.

Also inducted were Paul Suplizio, the organizer and mentor of the International Reciprocal Trade Association and its executive director for 18 years, and Bob Meyer, founder of BarterNews (the first barter industry magazine) and worldwide spokesperson for the industry.

IRTA introduced the “Universal Currency” at this convention, which had been announced and was in the works since the previous year’s convention in Montreal.

In our Corporate Barter Section we looked at how barter investors trade their products or services for equity in promising ventures.

And a travel agency president showed how his “thinking out of the box” provided him a competitive edge in the marketplace. He announced that travel agencies are missing the boat by overlooking the many opportunities available to them.

In our Countertrade Section we not only looked at the global trends, but examined the traditional Thunderbird Winterim Course—Countertrade/International Offset.

According to the 2008 Management Action Programs Inc. (MAP) Quarterly CEO Survey conducted by Vantage Research (http://www.vantage-research.com), many CEOs are refraining from making bold, sudden business moves right now.

Instead, they’re opting to shift the management gears into a “hunkering down and building up the business” position. With this change in drive and direction, CEOs are fine-tuning internal operations by bolstering the quality of company culture, internal communications and customer service. These very important, yet perhaps less obvious, changes are meant to help companies stay on track while the economy hovers in uncertainty.

Currently, 73 percent of the surveyed CEOs say the economy won’t improve for at least 12 months. What’s more, MAP’s study indicates that in coming to grips with the long-term realities of the slowdown, these CEOs have completed most major business moves, such as cost-containment and workforce reduction. Now, these leaders are more involved with reassuring and supporting employees by frequent, mostly face-to-face updates about company financials, results and strategies.

Lee Froschheiser, president/CEO of MAP (http://www.mapconsulting.com), a veteran business-consulting firm that has accelerated sustained growth for over 13,000 companies and 160,000 executives since 1960, says the MAP survey results highlight the major significance of strengthening business fundamentals and, especially, communication. Bottom line, clear communication is the most important key to a business leader’s success, he says.

This means that to properly manage and grow a business through tough times, you must be an effective, compelling communicator,” Froschheiser says. “Great CEOs are doing this by implementing regular meetings, adopting a transparent leadership style, and creating a very candid workplace culture. They’re also boosting company-client communications with better
customer-service. These changes produce an open environment, which is the necessary breeding ground for establishing successful strategies and achieving a company’s goals.”

Yesterday’s astounding bid to pay $2.1 million to have lunch with billionaire Warren Buffett is staggering. Yet, the Chinese investment fund manager, Zhao Danyang, of the Hong-Kong-based Pureheart China Growth Investment Fund will most likely find it to be one of his best investments.

Suddenly, everyone has heard (or read) of him and his fund, new business is bound to come his way. And his questions to Buffett could bring answers that will reap additional future profits for the company, as Zhao and up to seven friends dine with Buffett at the Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York City.

The other winner in this auction is the Glide Foundation, which provides social services to the poor and homeless in San Francisco. Incidently, last year’s auction of lunch with Buffett (who offers this luncheon once a year for Glide) went for $650,100.

“Hold on,” says the World Wealth Report, released this past week by Merrill Lynch and Capgemini. According to their study, rich investors were busily taking profits beginning two years ago–reducing the share of their portfolios devoted to real estate from 24% down to 14% in 2006.

The rich investors were bailing on homes, commercial real estate investments, real estate investments trusts and other investment properties. They increased their investment (slightly)
in equities, from 31% to 33%…but cash and fixed income were the big winners, accounting for a combined 44% (up 9%).
Ozone Barter Becomes BarterVista

Ozone Barter has changed its name to Barter Vista. The company is focused in Singapore and the Asian region.

For more information see www.bartervista.com.

High School & College Graduates Want To Be Entrepreneurs

Half of all new college graduates now believe that self-employment is more secure than a full-time job. And with 80% of the U.S. colleges and universities now offering courses on entrepreneurship, 60% of Generation Y business owners consider themselves to be serial entrepreneurs, according to Inc. magazine.

Eighteen to twenty-four-year-olds are starting companies at a faster rate than 35 to 44-year-olds. And 70% of today’s high-schoolers intend to start their own companies, according to a Gallup poll.

IndyStar Publishes Barter Article

Stretching cash in an economic downturn is a popular idea. Examples here show how members of trade exchanges are avoiding dipping into cash reserves and taking out loans. (Click here.)

World Population Will Hit 7 Billion In Four Years

As the global community struggles with finding enough natural resources for today’s population of 6.7 billion people (we hit the 6 billion number in 1999), in a few short years we will hit 7 billion.

The first billion was reached in 1800, and it took 130 years to reach 2 billion. The U.S., presently with 304 million, is the third largest nation after China and India according to the Census Bureau.

Private Jet Fleets Expanding

Fast-growing private aviation company XOJet, started back in 2006 and backed by buyout firm TPG, is expanding with new secured financing of $2.5 billion. XO schedules about 1,000 flights per month.

NetJets, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, is the largest player in the private-aviation industry. With some 750 aircraft, they log over 1,000 flights per day.

To keep your “focus” uppermost in your mind here’s a handy reminder that a profit is only made on a customer…

We never make a profit on a transaction.

We only make a profit on a customer.

A “customer” is a person who comes to us out of habit.
“Consumers” only go to a store or office by habit if they are treated like “customers.”

And for diversity and added security be sure to develop a percentage of “barter customers.” (Those who wish to do business with you in a different manner.) All that’s needed is an understanding of the value of a trade dollar.
