Gretna, LA — For the seventh consecutive year, Richard Bartholomew’s work has been selected for the book, “Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year”. The Pelican Publishing Company, in cooperation of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, publishes the annual collection.

Two of Bartholomew's cartoons are included in the 2012 edition, the last to be edited by the late Charles Brooks. Brooks, who died in August, edited all 39 editions beginning in 1972, highlighting the best work of U.S. and Canadian cartoonists. Brooks was a past president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and former long-time cartoonist for the Birmingham News.

"It has been a great honor to have my work selected by Mr. Brooks," said Bartholomew. "His legacy will continue to inspire and teach this important art form.”

Richard will be signing copies of Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year, 2011 edition, at Austin Comic Con, at the Austin Convention Center this weekend, November 11th through 13th. The new edition will be available in bookstores by early December. The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists receives royalties from the sales of this series every year.

Richard Bartholomew's editorial cartoons are distributed by Artizans Syndicate throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Richard is a Dallas native and seventh-generation Texan. He and his wife, Dana, live in Pflugerville, Texas, just outside of Austin. His first editorial cartoon feature appeared in a local newspaper, the Metro County Line, in September 1995.

A year later his work was recognized nationally when he was awarded an Outstanding Entry Award in the John Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition, sponsored by Columbia College Chicago.

Since 2006, his work has been syndicated by Artizans, added to the permanent collections of the University of Texas Center for American History, the Newseum in Washington DC, and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum. In 2010, Richard received the ‘Award of Excellence’ in the 10th annual International Editorial Cartoon Competition, hosted by the Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom.

In addition to local newspapers, Richard’s political cartoons and caricatures have appeared in statewide publications, including the Austin American-Statesman, the Austin Business Journal, The Texas Observer, The Austin Chronicle, D Magazine, The Quorum Report, and the Waco Tribune-Herald, and such national publications as The Washington Post and The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

His animation work has appeared in two feature films, The Quest for Camelot (Warner Bros., 1997) and The Prince of Egypt (DreamWorks, 1998). Richard received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980.

Richard has been an award-winning designer and illustrator for over 30 years. He began specializing in humorous illustration and cartooning in 1984 when he was hired by Texas Monthly Press to illustrate the 1985 Texas Characters Datebook, featuring caricatures of famous Texans.
