The Story of Joan of Arc by E.M. Wilmot-Buxton

Finally, I have found time to read a book and now to share it with you. My deep appreciation for our history, and Biblical History in general, led me to read The Story of Joan of Arc. How touching it was to get a glimpse into the life of this sweet innocent. This was an enlightening story, and a very short read. Amazing it was to see how much life could be shared within a short 137 pages.

Here's a few excerpts from The Story of Joan of Arc:

Page 29:
But Jeanne stood firm. "She had always obeyed her parents in everything save in the matter of the trial at Toul," she said sadly in later days. It was a foretaste of martyrdom, for to some sensitive natures, defiance of the wishes of those loved most tenderly is worse than bodily death.

Page 61:
And as she spoke she raised to heaven her shining eyes in a gaze which was full of hope and joy and clear vision of things unseen.

Page 93:
But what was the King about, or La Tremouille, or the forces inside Compiegne which she had led to the relief of that city? Did they attempt her rescue? Did they at least begin to open negotiations for her ransom as a prisoner of war? Nothing of the kind.

Page 119:
"If I were at judgment; if I saw the fire kindled and the faggots ablaze, and the executioner ready to stir the fire; and if I were in the fire, I would say no more, and till death I will maintain what I have said is the truth."

John Brown by Jeanette Covert Nolan

Being a citizen of the United States of America, and now living in the southern states, I find myself sort of magnetized to this country's history, namely the Civil War. My girls and I took another beloved trip to the library a week ago where we checked out "John Brown" written by Jeanette Covert Nolan. This book is quite dated, yet very nicely tells the story of Old John Brown. Seems to be written to the pre-teen crowd, but I'm a bit older than the pre-teen crowd and I enjoyed reading through it. It's a smooth read - with that aged eloquent vocabulary.

An excerpt from Jeanette Covert Nolan's "John Brown":

"I have, may it please the court, a few words to say... I deny everything but what I have all along admitted a design on my part to free slaves. That was all I intended. I never did intend to murder, or treason, or the destruction of property... Had I interfered in behalf of the rich, the powerful, the intelligent, the so-called great, it would have been all right. Every man in this court would have deemed it an act worthy of reward rather than punishment."

"I say I am yet too young to understand that God is any respecter of persons. I believe that to have interfered in behalf of His despised poor was not wrong, but right. Now, if it is deemed necessary that I should forfeit my life for the furtherance of the ends of justice, and mingle my blood with the blood of my children and with the blood of millions in this slave country whose rights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and unjust enactments -- I say, let it be done."

Harriet Tubman: The Moses of Her People

It's been a while since I've posted. The family and I relocated 2 hours North of where we were. Ya know... all the fun stuff: packing, sorting, packing, sorting, packing, sorting, UNpacking, sorting, UNpacking, sorting...

Anyhoo - :) - still in the midst of all the *fun* going on 'round here, I have been reading about Harriet Tubman: The Moses of Her People. I bought my copy from Dover Publications...you may want to check them out. They offer hundreds of books from all genre types. Just do a GoodSearch* for Dover Publications.

So here is a quote that stuck out at me as I was reading this amazing woman's story:

"These poor fugitives, hunted like partridges upon the mountains, or like the timid fox by the eager sportsman, were obliged in self-defense to meet cunning with cunning, and to borrow from the birds and animals their mode of eluding their pursuers by any device which in the exigency of the case might present itself to them. They had a creed of their own, and a code of morals which we dare not criticise till we find our own lives and those of our dear ones similarly imperiled."

"The Little Bit Scary People"

Have you been to your community library this summer? I'd like to take my girls at least every week, but as this has been a busier summer than usual, we're lucky to make it every two. :)

So our last library trip brought us in contact with a cute little book called The Little Bit Scary People by Emily Jenkins and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. What a cute book! Ya know how you go about town with your little ones and they see "that loud guy" or "that girl all dressed in black" or, my personal favorite, "why does that guy have all those wrinkles on his face?" (Boy, was that almost an embarrassing occasion. At least she had her wits about her to wait till we were out of the old gentleman's company before posing such a question! She was only 4.)

Anyway, this little gem is a cute story that introduces a "scary" character, but then shows that if you got to know that person... well, maybe they wouldn't be so scary after all! (This book was recommended for ages 3-6.)

You Are Special - Max Lucado

When my girls were 4 and 6 they had a favorite book called You Are Special, written by Max Lucado. This book is a WONDERFUL, INSPIRING tool that will help to instill an understanding of what and who God is to us. It is a heart-warming tale of an adorable little wooden-person (Punchinello) who faces the "judgement of others" - and overcomes his own self-doubt by "meeting with his maker" - a most gracious and loving maker who reminds little Punchinello that he is loved for who he is... not how much he has, or what he can and cannot do - simply for who he is.

While this is a children's book, it deeply moved me as well. It continues to inspire my little ones - who are now 6 and 8. :) Happy reading and God Bless.
