In the first of our Repost/Greatest Hits series that revisits some of the valuable insights that have been buried over time we bring you a post that was originally published on September 25th, 2006.

—-

In a reversal of roles, the corporate PR department for one of our clients sent this to us. Eight tips on how to work with and what to expect from a PR firm. Write this down…

“Public relations is most effective when it is well integrated into your business. Fully integrating PR will help extend your business’s success in market positioning, sales and employee relations as the value of your brand increases with positive visibility. Here are a few ideas on ways you can make sure that takes place.

Integrated Planning. As an extension of your sales and marketing effort, make sure that your agency is involved in your annual planning process as well as in any periodic sales and marketing meetings that happen through the year. Timing is critical in public relations as many publications are on four- to six-month lead times or some cases even longer. By integrating PR into the planning process, your PR team can help you outline critical-need dates to help support certain booking or selling seasons as well as special events and activities. This also allows you to clarify each team player’s role to ensure everyone is working in tandem to meet your strategic goals.

Over Communicate. If your agency doesn’t know something is happening, they can’t help you get publicity for it. From new products to special promotions, and new dealer programs to operational changes, these are all examples of developments that should be shared well in advance with your agency. Collectively you can determine if there is news value in what’s happening. But, if they don’t know about it, the media will never know either. (more…)

“What are you doing?” Are you outside? Or would you rather be outside than on Twitter? So would we.

An avid outdoorsman on Twitter is kind of like Beyonce Knowles perusing Backcountry.com for her next music video outfit. It’s just not right. So, while lists of tweeting celebs, foodies, and social media mavens litter the twitterverse, it’s no surprise that we could not find a similar list for the outdoor world.

So, we compiled a list of tweeple more relevant to our lifestyle than @mrskutcher and @iamdiddy to share in hopes that we can all be connected by outdoor recreation and adventure AND Twitter.

This is just a start, obviously. We decided on a short list to grow by—if you’re new to Twitter—or a list to pull from—if you’re an old bird.

Disclaimer: This list is totally biased by our location and our interests. We don’t care, for example, what @waterville’s snow conditions are like but you may. We had to cut somewhere… and at the end of the day, the digital voices you want to hear are a personal choice.

And if you’re not on Twitter, you better come to peace with us knowing your news before you do—and of course, whether Lance Armstrong or Laird Hamilton had a better breakfast.

The usual post Interbike bike porn euphoria has deteriorated into a bunch of grumping. Like waiting until the morning before you send an angry email, maybe everybody should wait until they are no longer hungover before they write their post-Interbike wrap-up:

Bicycle Retailer & Industry News publisher, Marc Sani politely “kvetching” BR&IN Bitching here. - “But when you pause to look at the show itself, I fear Interbike falls a tad short. And I’m not talking about much. Interbike could do several things that would add immense value to those 27 hours of show-floor time.”

Over at AllHailtheBlackMarket, Stevil lost his camera but not his sense of humor. - “2009’s Interbike was truly a whirlwind like few others I’ve experienced, the final substantiation of which is that until 1:30 on Saturday afternoon, I was of the committed opinion that it was already Sunday.”

The crew at Competitive Cyclist dot com gives a retailer’s perspective in their Interbike Confidential report - “Interbike is still relevant, but for reasons less life-or-death than business itself, namely networking and gossip and for companies like QBP or SRAM who need to book like 500 nights worth of rooms for an army of employees plus airfare plus meals plus union labor to set up/tear down I question whether being social provides enough ROI to stay the course with Interbike.“

The bitter bike blogosphere has a new playa over at HBCutthecourse1999.com. Cruise around, enjoy the ride. - ““Did you know that Tony Ellsworth makes guys sit down to pee when they are at his house?” ‘Nuff said…We’re taking nominations for who the anony author is.

Overall vibe was that Interbike needs to step up it’s game in order to compete with Eurobike.

Don’t overthink this. As this article in Wired points out, Facebook and Google aren’t Friends. Facebook blocks Google so that Facebook can fully develop their own Internet without adding any value to Google.

Why? Facebook isn’t so much about helping friends stay connected as it is about developing the next generation’s dominant marketing platform. Search is getting personal, with Personalized Recommendations based on your Social Graph.

The premise is that you get better, more accurate, more valuable search results when the results are pulled from people you know, you like, or want to know and like versus the results you get from some random, super-secret algorithm.

Once Facebook proves that their search results lead to greater click-through rates because of the greater accuracy and value, then they sell the service to marketers based on key word value.

You want to have a Fan page because it makes the new system more integrated and provides more opportunities to sell more stuff (of course.)

Read the article. You’ll get it.
