Tigers put aside negatives, grab a win

DETROIT -- The word "resilient" is now an overused catch-all to describe the hurdles that successful teams overcome during a season. Barely a day goes by in a major sport that someone doesn't proclaim, "We've been a resilient team all year." That quote is more ubiquitous than Flo from Progressive.

But the Detroit Tigers are officially cleared to use it as their team slogan for the rest of 2011. When the team lineup card looks like a Toledo Mud Hens alumni reunion, you're resilient. When the coaching staff focuses less on scouting reports than on the ins and outs of health care policy, you're resilient. And when the club pain threshold is twice as high as its OPS, you're resilient.

In a player-for-player matchup, the Tigers probably have no business being on the same field with the Texas Rangers in the American League Championship Series. But they're still breathing -- even if it makes their sides ache.

The Tigers treated 41,905 home fans to a rousing good time Tuesday night with a 5-2 victory over the Rangers, pulling within 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. If the Tigers can find a way to win behind Rick Porcello on Wednesday, they'll draw even in the series with Justin "Rain Man" Verlander poised to take the mound in Game 5.

At the moment, the Tigers are a cross between the Monty Python "I'm not dead yet" sketch and a science fiction flick in which the alien life form keeps regenerating limbs. In Game 3, the team mindset was embodied by designated hitter Victor Martinez, who nearly doubled over in pain during a home run swing in the fourth inning, took forever and a day to circle the bases and was so frustrated by the sudden turn of events that he slammed his helmet to the ground on his way down the dugout steps.

Yet Martinez stayed in the game, with a Willis Reed-like display of fortitude, and promised to be in the lineup when the series resumes Wednesday.

"The only way I won't play is if I wake up and I'm dead," Martinez said.

By all rights, the starring role in Tuesday's game should have belonged to pitcher Doug Fister, who has been a monster during the Tigers' late-season rise to prominence. He beat the Yankees in the division series clincher and held a stacked Texas lineup in check with the usual array of sinking fastballs, pinpoint breaking pitches and exceptional command.

The Tigers love to talk about Fister's athleticism, and it was on display during an intriguing sequence in the eighth inning. Fister jogged out to the mound for his warm-up tosses, and plate umpire Jim Wolf threw a ball in his direction with plenty of zip on it. Fister suddenly found a new gear and extended his left arm to snag the throw. A few moments later, he fielded an Endy Chavez chopper on the run and sprinted to the bag to beat the fleet Texas left fielder by a step.

"He's like Spider-Man," Tigers reliever Phil Coke said of Fister. "He catches stuff in the outfield during batting practice that he shouldn't catch. He's like an Australian shepherd playing catch -- and the ball never hits the ground."

Fister was an inspirational storyline, for sure. But these are the Tigers, after all, so his performance was overshadowed to an extent by the usual barrage of trainer's room updates and accompanying lineup intrigue.

First the Tigers arrived at the park and endured some unwelcome news in the form of another setback for left fielder Delmon Young -- who was omitted from the ALCS roster this past weekend because of an oblique injury and reinstated when Magglio Ordonez went down with a season-ending ankle injury. The Tigers determined that Young couldn't go in Game 3, so manager Jim Leyland gave the nod to Andy Dirks in right field and rearranged his lineup card shortly before game time.

Even inspirational, compelling moments come with a touch of pathos and/or concern for the Tigers. With Texas leading 1-0 in the fourth inning, Martinez turned on a 2-1 Colby Lewis fastball and drove it into the right-field seats for the tying home run. But the slow-motion replay showed some slow-motion pain on his face, and he proceeded to take one very long and torturous trot around the bases.

Martinez was so mortified by the mere perception that he might be showboating, he told Texas catcher Yorvit Torrealba to let Lewis know he was taking his time because of the pain, not because of his ego.

"It was pretty sharp, man," Martinez said. "It was really uncomfortable to even run the bases."

But in light of Martinez's pedigree, his teammates weren't surprised to see him try to find a way to stay in the game.

"He's tough," teammate Don Kelly said. "He sprained his knee earlier this year in Kansas City and he couldn't catch, but he never missed a beat. There were times when he was running, and it looked like he shouldn't be out there. But he gave it everything he had every single day. That's what this team is all about."

Martinez arrived at the dugout to one of the more muted home run celebrations you'll ever see. He walked down the dugout steps, hurled his batting helmet to the ground in anger and kept on walking as his teammates, Leyland and the coaches looked on with concerned expressions.

But Martinez's fortitude and leadership ability know no bounds. He retired to the trainer's room for some treatment, took some hacks in the cage and played a role in the game's pivotal sequence in the fifth inning.

After singles by Austin Jackson and Ramon Santiago put runners on first and third with two out for Detroit, logic said the Rangers would pitch around Miguel Cabrera in the cleanup spot. First, because he's Miguel Cabrera. And second, because Martinez was standing in the on-deck circle and not a soul in Comerica Park had a clue whether he was healthy enough to swing a bat.

Inexplicably, the Rangers found a way to let Cabrera beat them. Lewis threw an 0-2 fastball up in the zone, and Cabrera lined it to right for a double to give Detroit a 2-1 lead.

What precisely were the Rangers' intentions with Cabrera? Manager Ron Washington wasn't entirely clear on the topic. Could Martinez have swung the bat with authority if he had come up with the bases loaded? Thankfully, for his sake, it never reached that point. And was Cabrera surprised to see the Rangers pumping strikes rather than pitching him more cautiously? He didn't have the luxury of pondering that question.

"I don't want to think about that," Cabrera said. "I don't want to put that in my mind and put extra pressure on myself. I just want to go out there and do my job. I don't need to hit a home run. I need to get hits with men in scoring position. I'm OK with that. It's not about one player. It's about winning games."

In the end, Cabrera did hit a home run to help pad Detroit's lead in the late innings. Dirks, the rookie, singled, stole a base and scored a run. And Jackson, who looked so dazed and confused during the Texas leg of the series, emerged from some tinkering on his stance with hitting coach Lloyd McClendon and singled three times to give the Tigers' lineup a needed jump-start at the top.

It's hard to explain how the Tigers keep doing this, but they continue to win games and defy the odds in a very improbable, inspirational and uplifting way. As team identities go, that's pretty good.

"You know what? This is us," Leyland said. "We are what we are. We've been doing this for the whole year, and we're going to either win this thing or go down with what we got. That's the way we're going to do it. Pretty simple, really."

The Tigers will wake up Wednesday morning with another game to play. And feel very much alive.

The Oakland Athletics' pitching staff is among the best in baseball. The offense has been another matter.

Nearly every facet of the game has been a problem for the Florida Marlins this month.

The A's look to take advantage of the lowly Marlins again and win their seventh straight home game Wednesday night.

Oakland (36-44) may be at the bottom of the AL West, but the team's staff ranks near the top of the majors with a 3.13 ERA.

The pitchers have been even better over the last 12 games, leading the A's to eight wins while compiling a 1.56 ERA and a .196 opponent batting average.

Generating offense, however, remains an issue. The A's are hitting .220 with only four homers during that 12-game span.

Oakland has been held to two runs or fewer in five of the last six games, going 5 for 42 with runners in scoring position.

The A's are 28th in baseball with a .235 average and last with 41 homers.

They didn't need to do much at the plate Tuesday, beating Florida 1-0 as Gio Gonzalez and Andrew Bailey combined on a one-hitter.

Guillermo Moscoso (2-3, 2.68 ERA) is rather familiar with the A's offensive shortcomings.

The right-hander is 0-2 despite a 2.35 ERA in his last four starts. He's been backed by three total runs of support in that stretch with all that scoring coming in one game.

Moscoso was superb Friday, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing two hits and exiting in the seventh as the A's wasted the effort in a 1-0 loss at Philadelphia.

He's replacing rookie Graham Godfrey in the rotation as manager Bob Melvin prepares for Rich Harden's season debut Friday versus Arizona. Harden is on the disabled list with a strained right lat muscle.

"I'm trying to push myself into the rotation to stay all year," Moscoso told the team's official website. "The guys on the (disabled list) are coming very soon, and that's going to be a tough decision. I wish I can stay here, so we'll see what happens."

Moscoso may be in for another strong effort in his first appearance against Florida (34-45).

The Marlins are hitting .225 with a 4.38 ERA during a 3-23 stretch, which has dropped them into the NL East cellar.

"It's just been a tough month, man, that's all I've got to say really," said Javier Vazquez, Tuesday's hard-luck loser. "It's unexplainable. We were playing such good baseball the first couple of months and now it seems like we're doing something that costs us the game."

Ricky Nolasco (4-4, 4.44) is in the midst of his own swoon, going 0-4 with a 7.29 ERA in six starts after posting a 4-0 record and 3.04 ERA in his first 10 of the season.

The right-hander's difficulties continued Friday, but he did his part in allowing three runs in seven innings, while the offense was two-hit in a 5-1 loss to Seattle.

"I told myself I can't give up a run if I want to win," Nolasco said. "Obviously, that's not the way it went."

He didn't get a decision in his only meeting with Oakland on June 21, 2008, yielding three runs in seven innings of a Marlins' road victory.

The loss of one of the San Francisco Giants' best hitters doesn't bode well for a depleted lineup already struggling to produce.

After another lackluster performance at the plate, the NL West-leading Giants close a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday night.

The Giants (36-29) suffered a 10-2 loss to the Reds (34-32) on Saturday, a day after Freddy Sanchez dislocated his right shoulder while diving for a grounder. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list and was scheduled to have an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

Sanchez was one of the few hitters producing for San Francisco. He was batting .289 with 24 RBIs -- second-most on the team -- and had a club-high 15 doubles.

After placing Sanchez on the DL, things didn't improve much later in the day for the Giants as Tim Lincecum gave up seven runs in four innings in one of the worst starts of his career while the offense sputtered against Mike Leake, who pitched eight scoreless innings.

"That's a good hitting ballclub and you're going to pay for it if you're off. There's not much else to it, really," manager Bruce Bochy said of Lincecum's struggles.

San Francisco, which has scored nine runs the last five games, ranks near the bottom of the league in runs per game (3.5) and batting average (.240). Before Sanchez's injury, the team was already without catcher Buster Posey, who is out for the season with a broken bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle, and third baseman Pablo Sandoval, sidelined with an injured right wrist.

To fill Sanchez's spot, the Giants signed Bill Hall, who batted .224 with two homers and 13 RBIs in 46 games with Houston.

"We need some depth right now and he gives us that at every position in the infield and outfield," Bochy said. "He has some power, speed, so we're glad to have him."

After failing to do much off Leake, San Francisco might not find it any easier against Edinson Volquez (4-2, 5.74 ERA), who was sharp in his return to Cincinnati's rotation this week, allowing one run in seven innings of an 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

Volquez was the Reds' opening day starter before being demoted to Triple-A Louisville after his ERA rose to 6.35 following a start against Cleveland on May 22.

"He was locating his fastball a lot better. That's the Volquez we knew from before," manager Dusty Baker told the Reds' official website.

The right-hander is 2-1 with an 8.31 ERA against the Giants, and his most recent matchup is surely one he'd prefer to forget. Volquez recorded only two outs in an 11-2 loss Aug. 23, allowing five runs, five hits and three walks.

He'll try to help the Reds win back-to-back games for the third time this month after they dropped 11 of 14 to close out May.

Joey Votto had three hits Saturday, and is batting .385 this month with nine RBIs.

San Francisco will hand the ball to Jonathan Sanchez (4-4, 3.51), who has struggled with his control the last two starts, walking 11 in 10 1/3 innings. He gave up two runs and four hits in five innings of a 2-1 loss to Washington on Tuesday, striking out six.

The left-hander is 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in four starts against the Reds.

Brandon Phillips is 3 for 8 against Sanchez with each hit leaving the park.

Washington (28-36) is 14-24 on the road, where it hasn't won two in a row since May 10 and 11 in Atlanta.
The Nationals are 5-13 outside of the beltway since then, but beat the Padres 2-1 on Friday after opening this four-game Thursday night with a 7-3 defeat.They haven't won consecutive games in San Diego (29-36) since Sept. 11-12, 1999, when Washington was known as the Montreal Expos. The Colorado Rockies' pitching staff is about to get a boost. It's not certain if the San Diego Padres' offense will get one as well.

Aaron Cook will make his season debut for the Rockies on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series with the Padres, who may have prized prospect Anthony Rizzo stay with the big club after getting his injured left thumb examined.

Cook, who led the Rockies with 16 wins in 2008 and is the club's career leader with 69 victories, had been dealing with shoulder stiffness in spring training before breaking the ring finger on his pitching hand when he caught it in a door.

The right-hander's return will be welcomed as Colorado (28-32) has already lost Jorge De La Rosa for the season with a torn elbow ligament and watched 19-game winner Ubaldo Jimenez go winless over the first two months of 2011.

Cook, 6-8 with a 5.08 ERA in 23 starts last year, also will make his debut at a venue where he's been real successful. He's 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 11 games at Petco Park, with only loss coming in 2006.

"I'm comfortable pitching there," Cook told the Rockies' official website last week. "To have the best-case scenario out of something bad would be to come back and pitch in San Diego."

While Cook is slated to start, the Padres (28-34) are not divulging what they plan to do with Rizzo -- a first baseman and key piece acquired when Adrian Gonzalez was dealt to Boston over the winter.

Playing for Triple-A Tucson, Rizzo has dominated opposing pitchers, batting .365 with a .444 on-base percentage, 16 homers and 63 RBIs. San Diego is currently led by Chris Denorfia's .302 average and Ryan Ludwick's eight homers and 37 RBIs.

General manager Jed Hoyer said Tuesday that Rizzo will be in San Diego to have his thumb looked at by a specialist. If Rizzo doesn't debut against the Rockies, he could do so later this week versus Washington.

Rizzo suffered the injury in a collision with an umpire on May 31.

"There's no structural damage," Rizzo told the Arizona Daily Star. "It's just swollen. It's a bruise just like we said all along."

Dustin Moseley (2-6, 3.00) will try to win consecutive starts for first time this season for San Diego. The right-hander limited Houston to one run and six hits in seven innings of the Padres' 3-1 win Friday.

Moseley allowed six runs and a season-high nine hits over four innings of San Diego's 12-7 loss on May 13 in Denver.

After getting blanked in the series opener, San Diego answered with a 2-0 victory Tuesday. Alberto Gonzalez and pitcher Tim Stauffer had back-to-back, two-out RBI singles in the fifth inning off Jimenez, now 1-6 despite a season-high eight strikeouts.

"He deserved a heck of a lot better fate than he got," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "He was terrific. He looks like the Ubaldo Jimenez of old."

Seth Smith has two hits for Colorado, which has scored 13 runs on a 3-5 road trip with one game left.

It's not surprising Matt Cain would prefer to have a lead when he's on the mound.

The San Francisco Giants are struggling to comply at home, but could be in for an improved effort at the plate.

Cain may get some solid backing as he attempts to win consecutive starts for the first time this season when the Giants conclude this three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Cain (4-4, 3.64 ERA) is 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA in five starts at AT&T Park, but he might have a better record if the offense could have provided more than eight total runs of support.

Production from the lineup at home has been an issue for San Francisco (34-27), which owns a .233 average while scoring 2.88 runs per game to rank near the bottom of the league in both categories. The club averages 4.09 runs on the road.

The offense sputtered at home again Tuesday, collecting five hits in a 2-1 loss to Washington (27-34) after taking the series opener 5-4 in 13 innings a night earlier.

Cain didn't need much assistance from his teammates Friday, yielding one run and four hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of a 3-1 home victory over Colorado. He didn't get any runs of support in his two previous outings, losing both.

Getting enough backing seems to put the right-hander at ease on the mound.

"I think most starters feel that way, if you get a two- or three-run lead, that's set in our mind that we want to keep that lead," said Cain, who is 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA in four home starts against the Nationals, but hasn't faced them there since a Giants' victory May 12, 2009.

He's lost his last two games against them in Washington, compiling a 6.39 ERA while working with three total runs.

Aubrey Huff is one of the Giants struggling at home, hitting .192 while getting one of his eight homers and eight of his 32 RBIs. He's 2 for 10 with two RBIs in this series after going 0 for 10 when San Francisco dropped three of four in the nation's capital from April 29-May 2.

The Giants are batting .196 against the Nationals this year while being outscored 17-10.

They might be in a favorable position to improve on that since Washington is giving the ball to Yunesky Maya (0-1, 8.00), who is still searching for his first career win.

The right-hander is facing San Francisco for the first time, and he's 0-4 with a 6.43 ERA in seven starts over two seasons. The Nationals are winless when he's taken the mound.

The Cuban right-hander struggled again in his latest outing Friday, giving up four runs and six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings of a 4-0 loss at Arizona.

Maya is getting desperate to get his first victory.

"It worries me a little bit," Maya told the team's official website through catcher and interpreter Ivan Rodriguez. "I want to win badly. That's one of the things I'm always thinking about. When I pitch, I want to win my first major league game. I realize that is not the right way to think. I have to come out the next time and do a good job."

The Nationals have dropped 11 of 15 on the road since last winning consecutive games there May 10-11 at Atlanta.

The Baltimore Orioles' Chris Jakubauskas said he's physically prepared for his next start. Manager Buck Showalter is hoping the right-hander will be ready mentally as well.

In his first major league start since getting hit in the head last season, Jakubauskas will try to help the Orioles continue their strong play at home Tuesday night against the slumping Oakland Athletics.

Currently using a four-man rotation, Baltimore will need a fifth starter twice until June 19 and will look to Jakubauskas (0-0, 6.39 ERA) to fill that role. The right-hander has made five relief appearances this season for the Orioles (27-31) and one since being recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on May 30.

He was 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA in five minor league starts this season but hasn't made one in the majors since April 24, 2010, with Pittsburgh. He didn't make it past the first inning of that game in Houston.

Lance Berkman's two-out line drive ricocheted off the side of his head, and Jakubauskas missed the rest of the season with a concussion. He insists that he's put the incident behind him.

"Obviously there's going to be a bunch made out of what I did in my last start in the big leagues, but I'm ready to go," Jakubauskas told the team's website. "I like starting, so it will be good to get back out there and start a game."

Baltimore will try to win back-to-back games for the first time since its season-high five straight wins May 21-26. The Orioles will also attempt to improve to 8-2 in their last 10 at Camden Yards, and they're hoping Jakubauskas can help them pull off both feats.

"(An incident like that is) always in the back of your mind," Showalter told the team's website. "Nobody takes that completely out, but we haven't seen any signs of it being one of the challenges that pitchers face pitching."

Baltimore scored all of its runs in the first two innings en route to Monday's 4-2 victory. The win was only the Orioles' fifth in 25 games against the A's, who are a season-worst seven games below .500.

Oakland (27-34) has dropped 14 of 19 and seven in a row -- one shy of its longest skid in one season. The A's dropped 10 straight July 28-Aug. 7, 2008.

"Each (game) it's something different," manager Bob Geren said of the slide. "The majority were well-pitched games. Tonight we got two runs. It's a combination -- we haven't played well the past week, the total package. We have to play better."

The A's are also one loss shy of matching their longest road losing streak this season, and Guillermo Moscoso (2-1, 3.21) will try to help prevent that in his third major league start.

The right-hander, who made two relief appearances this past weekend in Boston, was 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA in two starts last month. One of those wins was a 6-4 victory against Baltimore on May 29, and Moscoso gave up four runs over five innings in that game.

Jakubauskas was 0-1 with a 9.39 ERA in two starts against Oakland during his 2009 rookie season with Seattle.

The San Diego Padres are in last place in the NL West, but they're just seven games out of first -- not bad for a team with the league's worst home record.

They're hoping that's a title they won't have much longer.

Fresh off their first set of consecutive victories at Petco Park, the Padres look to win a series at home for just the second time Sunday in the finale of a four-game set with the Houston Astros.

San Diego (26-33) finished with identical 45-36 home and road records in 2010 while narrowly missing the postseason, and it has again been strong away from Petco Park in 2011.

That 15-12 road record hasn't meant much, though. The Padres lost 21 of their first 30 at home after falling 7-4 to the Astros on Thursday in the opener of a season-high 11-game homestand.

After the past two games, San Diego seems intent on turning around those woes. Dustin Moseley pitched seven strong innings in Friday's 3-1 victory, then Aaron Harang threw 6 2/3 effective innings Saturday in a 6-3 win.

"There's no doubt, it's been well-chronicled that our record isn't where we need it to be at home and we're going to try to do everything we can to catch up in that regard," manager Bud Black said.

San Diego still has a lot of work to do to overcome the majors' least effective offense, but it will have a better chance if Mat Latos (3-6, 3.97 ERA) can continue his personal turnaround. After beginning the season 0-5 with a 4.86 ERA and extending his losing streak since September to 10, Latos went 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA in his last four starts in May.

The right-hander held Atlanta to two runs and five hits over six innings Tuesday in a 5-4 victory, but Black still thinks Latos can do better.

"He was in position to have some short innings but couldn't put guys away," Black said. "I thought the hard slider was his good pitch later in the game tonight, the one he throws with velocity. When he has good depth to it, they swing over the top and miss it."

Facing the Astros (23-36) could help, but he struggled in Houston last month. Latos, who pitched eight shutout innings twice in victories over the Astros last season, gave up five runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 5-3 loss at Minute Maid Park on April 16.

Latos might need to be at his best against Jordan Lyles (0-0, 2.57), who did nothing to diminish his status as Houston's top pitching prospect in his major league debut despite costing himself a decision with his defense. Lyles' throwing error with a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning Tuesday against the Cubs led to a pair of runs, though the Astros later rallied to win 7-3.

"He was throwing everything for strikes, keeping guys off-balance, throwing exactly how we saw him throw in spring training," manager Brad Mills said of the 20-year-old Lyles, the majors' youngest active player. "He lived up to every expectation of every Astros fan, the management, the organization ... everything."

One player Lyles will want to pitch carefully is Ryan Ludwick. San Diego's left fielder, who was hitting .181 on May 10, is batting .373 with four homers and 22 RBIs in his last 22 games.

Ludwick is batting .410 in his last 17 contests against Houston.

Athletics-Red Sox Preview
The Oakland Athletics surpassed the run total of their previous three games combined in their most recent contest, yet it still wasn't enough to end their skid.

Facing AL ERA leader Josh Beckett may not be a cure for their offensive woes.

Oakland visits the Boston Red Sox on Saturday looking to avoid a fifth consecutive loss.

The A's (27-31) lost their fourth straight Friday, 8-6 against Boston, after scoring only five runs total in their last three. Their four-run first inning staked them to an early lead, but the Red Sox (31-26) overcame the deficit by the third inning.

"It's good to get some runs early," said Josh Willingham, who doubled twice. "But you have to give them credit, they came back."

Oakland ranks near the bottom of the league in batting average, runs and home runs, which may be tough to overcome facing the Red Sox's ace.

Beckett (4-2, 1.80 ERA) has won his last three starts against the A's, striking out 21 in 19 2/3 innings with a 3.66 ERA during that span.

However, the right-hander is coming off his first loss since April 5 after allowing two runs through six innings Sunday in a 3-0 defeat at Detroit. It marked the most runs he's allowed in six starts.

Beckett will attempt to shut down the Oakland offense, something most opposing pitchers have had success accomplishing. However, strong pitching has kept the A's competitive.

The staff's 3.08 ERA is among the league leaders.

"With the pitching that we have, we're a tough team to beat when the offense is there," manager Bob Geren said.

Trevor Cahill (6-3, 2.31) is the team's ace and will oppose Beckett, though he hasn't been pitching as well of late.

The right-hander is 0-3 with a 3.51 ERA over his last four starts. Prior to that stretch, Cahill was 6-0 with a 1.72 ERA in eight starts while allowing 10 earned runs over 52 1/3 innings. He's allowed 10 earned runs in 25 2/3 innings since.

Cahill surrendered four runs through 6 2/3 innings of a 5-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Monday. He and Beckett have faced each other once before, with Beckett earning an 8-3 victory July 27, 2009.

Cahill beat the Red Sox with seven scoreless innings in his most recent start against them Sept. 10.

Boston will try to ride the momentum from ending a four-game losing streak, its longest since beginning the season 0-6.

Carl Crawford hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh to complete the comeback Friday. The Red Sox had lost four of their previous five games at Fenway Park.

Reliever Bobby Jenks earned the victory.

"The type of ball we were playing (early in the season) compared to now is just two different teams," Jenks said. "Going out of spring training, this is what we were all expecting to start the year. It just showed up a little late but it's here now."

Crawford has a six-game hitting streak against the A's dating back to last season when he was with Tampa Bay.

Rays-Mariners Preview
The Seattle Mariners are thriving behind superb pitching. The Tampa Bay Rays are experiencing the complete opposite, but may have an edge on the mound against the Mariners this time.

Jeremy Hellickson looks to build on one of his best performances of the season when the Rays give him the ball during this four-game series at Seattle on Saturday.

The Mariners (30-27) have won 14 of 18 with a 2.07 ERA -- 1.05 from the bullpen -- to move into second place in the AL West, 1 1/2 games back of Texas.

Tampa Bay hasn't come close to getting that type of production from its pitchers, who have compiled a 4.94 ERA during a 6-13 stretch. The rotation has been a major problem while dropping four of five with a whopping 9.35 ERA.Starters James Shields and Andy Sonnanstine have been hit hard while losing the first two games of this series, combining to surrender 15 runs and seven homers in nine innings.

The Rays were four-hit by Jason Vargas in Friday's 7-0 loss after managing eight hits while striking out 11 times against Felix Hernandez in an 8-2 defeat a night earlier.Tampa Bay hasn't dropped four in a row since opening the season 0-6."Things are getting a little frustrating, but we've been here before, specifically the way we opened the season the way we did," said B.J. Upton, who is in a 2-for-26 slump. "I know at some point we will come out of it and things will start clicking again."

Hellickson (6-3, 2.80 ERA) may provide some relief for Tampa Bay as he attempts to tie the league lead in wins in his first meeting with the Mariners.The right-hander is 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA in his last six starts, holding opponents to .187 at the plate and scoreless in three of them. He turned in another superb outing Sunday, yielding three hits and fanning six in seven innings of a 7-0 win over Cleveland and was named AL rookie and pitcher of the month.

"He's definitely a candidate," manager Joe Maddon said of Hellickson's chances to be AL Rookie of the Year. "I really believe as he gains more experience, you're going to see him get even better. He has not been as sharp with his fastball command as he can. Once that arrives, he's really going to take off."While the Rays are hoping Hellickson can help turn them around, Casey Kotchman is expected back in the lineup after missing five games with an ankle injury.

The first baseman is hitting .316, nearly 100 points higher than his career average. He batted .217 with Seattle last year, and will face his former club for the first time since joining Tampa Bay as a free agent.The Mariners are turning to Doug Fister (3-5, 3.24) to keep them rolling, and he was impressive in Monday's 4-3 win over Baltimore. The right-hander yielded three runs and seven hits with nine strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings, ending a one-month victory drought."You look at his stuff, the way he approaches his game plan and sticks to it, the way he's able to make adjustments and make pitches," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said, "He's not just a one- or two-pitch guy. He has weapons beyond that. What I see a guy who really understands himself."

Dodgers-Reds Preview
For the first time since mid-May, the Cincinnati Reds have strung together consecutive victories. Making it three in a row might be asking a bit much.

Coming off a two-hit shutout, the red-hot Clayton Kershaw hopes his outstanding month of May carries into his first start in June as the Reds and visiting Los Angeles Dodgers continue their three-game set Saturday afternoon.

Cincinnati (30-28) had won five straight and 11 of 13 through May 17, but then suffered 11 losses in 14 games before winning Wednesday's finale against Milwaukee 4-3.

The Reds did all their scoring in the seventh and eighth while rallying to win that one, and they produced all the offense they'd need in one inning Friday against Los Angeles. Scott Rolen snapped a seven-game streak without an RBI with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth, lifting Cincinnati to a 2-1 victory.

"RBIs and runs scored are big things for me, and it's painful to go through a drought like that," Rolen said.

The Reds will have an even tougher task Saturday as they try to win a third straight game against the Dodgers (26-32) for the first time since May 14-16, 2004.

Kershaw (6-3, 2.62 ERA) went 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA in May, striking out 46 in 40 2/3 innings, and he ended the month with his best performance yet. The left-hander held the Marlins to two hits and struck out 10 in Sunday's 8-0 win, his second career complete game.

"I just pounded the strike zone and made them try to beat me instead of beating myself," Kershaw said.

Cincinnati has had trouble making contact against Kershaw in the past. He's struck out 29 in 21 1/3 innings in three career starts against the Reds, going 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA. Reigning NL MVP Joey Votto is 2 for 10 against Kershaw with six strikeouts.

The lone Red who's had success versus Kershaw is second baseman Brandon Phillips, who didn't start Friday after being hit by a pitch in the right wrist Wednesday.

Manager Dusty Baker said the day off was designed more to give the slumping Phillips -- 7 for 39 in his last nine games -- a little rest than anything else. Phillips is 6 for 10 against Kershaw, though, and should be in Saturday's lineup.

The Reds counter with Johnny Cueto (2-2, 2.20), who will face one of the NL's top starters for a second straight game.

Cueto pitched well Sunday against Atlanta, but it wasn't enough to outduel Jair Jurrjens. Still, there were plenty of positives for a pitcher who spent the season's first six weeks on the disabled list. Cueto gave up two runs and five hits over eight innings, the deepest he pitched since Aug. 27, in the 2-1 loss.

"It's a shame Johnny lost that game because he was pitching lights-out," Baker told the Reds' official website.

Cueto's been anything but on top of his game against the Dodgers. He's 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in three career starts, walking nine and allowing four homers in 15 innings. Casey Blake (3 for 5), Andre Ethier (3 for 6) and Matt Kemp (3 for 7) have all taken Cueto deep once.

A Los Angeles offense that's among the NL's least productive might be a bit worse Saturday. Rafael Furcal left Friday with a strained oblique after trying to throw Jay Bruce out at third base, and manager Don Mattingly said the shortstop may be headed to the disabled list.

Cubs-Cardinals Preview
A healthier Kyle Lohse has been one of the best pitchers in the majors this season, but he hasn't proved successful in recent matchups with the Chicago Cubs.

Facing an injury-plagued Cubs lineup might help Lohse end those struggles and earn a fourth straight win Saturday at Busch Stadium.

Lohse (7-2, 2.13 ERA) has gone at least six innings in each of his 11 outings and is 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA in his last five. The right-hander gave up two runs and six hits over his six frames Sunday while striking out six during a 4-3 win in Colorado.

After winning a career-best 15 games in 2008, Lohse totaled 10 victories over the last two seasons while dealing with forearm and groin problems.

"It feels good to go through what I've gone through and come back and feel like I'm getting that consistency I want to get out there," Lohse said. "Not having a start here or there you want to forget about. I'm looking to keep it going."

In this start, Lohse has a chance to tie for the major league lead in wins, but he's endured some forgettable outings against the Cubs, including a 9-7 defeat in St. Louis on Aug. 15. He gave up seven runs over three innings in that game and is 0-3 with an 8.07 ERA in his last seven matchups.

This time, Lohse will face a Cubs team without leading home run hitter Alfonso Soriano, who went on the disabled list Tuesday because of a strained left quad. A trio of .300 hitters -- Marlon Byrd (multiple facial fractures), Reed Johnson (back) and Jeff Baker (groin) -- are also on the DL, and Aramis Ramirez sat out the series opener after getting hit in the face with a grounder Wednesday.

With those players missing, Chicago (23-32) had five hits in a 6-1 defeat and has hit .192 in losing six of seven. Former Cubs infielder Ryan Theriot, meanwhile, extended his career-best hit streak to 17 games -- the longest active run in the majors.

Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman also homered as St. Louis (34-25) avoided their longest home skid to their arch-rivals in 33 years.

The Cardinals will try to further distance themselves from that streak by handing the Cubs a season-high fifth straight loss and adding to Randy Wells' woes.

In his first start back from a strained right forearm, the St. Louis-area native gave up five runs over four innings during a 10-0 loss to Pittsburgh last Saturday.

"I got behind a lot of hitters and ran the pitch count up," said Wells, who struck out seven and threw 92 pitches. "I don't know if it was so much rust as I was anxious to get back out there and see how things were going."

Wells (1-1, 5.40), however, had a 0.60 ERA while winning his final two starts against the Cardinals last season after going 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in his first three career matchups.

Theriot has never faced his former teammate, while Berkman and Colby Rasmus are both 3 for 8 (.375) against the right-hander. Rockies-Giants Preview
The San Francisco Giants are in first place in the NL West thanks to a strong record at AT&T Park and some intradivision dominance, patterns that continued in the opener of a 10-game homestand.

Regardless of venue or opponent, nothing's going right these days for the Colorado Rockies.

The Giants on Saturday afternoon seek a seventh consecutive home win over the sputtering Rockies, who with a loss will have dropped their fifth consecutive series.

San Francisco (32-25) didn't get off to a good start in defense of its World Series crown, but after beginning 15-16 it started to turn things around with a sweep of Colorado from May 6-8.

The Rockies were in first place by four games heading into that series, but now find themselves 5 1/2 games behind the Giants. San Francisco improved to 17-9 since May 6 with a 3-1 win Friday that dealt Colorado its 20th loss in 28 games.

The Giants are 9-2 against the West and 10-3 at home in that stretch.

The Rockies, meanwhile, scored three runs or fewer for the ninth time in 10 games.

"Our trouble, once again, came from the lack of offense," manager Jim Tracy said.

San Francisco has owned the Rockies (26-30) in the Bay Area lately despite producing little offensively. The Giants have only totaled 20 runs in winning six straight in the series, but that's because their pitching has been phenomenal.

They've given up nine runs in that stretch as their starters have posted a 1.56 ERA. Matt Cain on Friday became the fifth pitcher in those six games to go at least six innings while allowing one run or fewer.

Madison Bumgarner (2-6, 3.66 ERA) certainly seems capable of following suit. The left-hander has made seven straight quality starts while posting a 2.12 ERA, though he was just 1/3 heading into Monday's game at St. Louis due to a lack of run support.

The Giants finally gave him some help against the Cardinals, while Bumgarner limited St. Louis to two runs over seven innings in a 7-3 victory. Still, the 21-year-old feels he has room for improvement.

"I don't feel I've gotten into a good rhythm yet," Bumgarner told the Giants' official website.

He's 0-2 with a 3.52 ERA in four starts versus Colorado, though he held the Rockies to a run over six innings in each of his last two starts in the series -- including a 3-2 victory May 7 in San Francisco.

Bumgarner will definitely want to pitch carefully to Carlos Gonzalez. The Colorado outfielder is 4 for 11 with a pair of homers in their matchups.

One mistake could make a difference against Jhoulys Chacin (5-4, 3.33), who's 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA in four appearances -- three starts -- against the Giants. The right-hander held San Francisco to one hit over seven innings in his lone start at AT&T Park, and the Giants are hitting a woeful .132 against him.

Aubrey Huff, however, has managed to get to Chacin. He only has two hits in nine at-bats, but both were homers.

Chacin has won his last two road starts, but his two most recent outings -- both at home -- were losses. He settled down after allowing three first-inning runs Sunday against St. Louis -- Chacin gave up one more in the next five -- but the damage was done in a 4-3 loss.

Blue Jays-Orioles Preview
The Toronto Blue Jays have picked up where they left off against the Baltimore Orioles.

Ricky Romero now gets his chance to continue his own dominance of the Orioles, and Adam Lind's scheduled return may boost those chances.

Romero looks to extend his personal winning streak to four, and Lind is expected back from injury when these teams meet at Camden Yards on Saturday night.

Toronto (29-28) has won 21 of 27 against Baltimore (25-30) and went 15-3 in the season series last year. The Blue Jays carried that success into 2011, winning 8-4 on Friday.

Romero (5-4, 2.88 ERA) went 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts against Baltimore last year.

The left-hander, Toronto's leader in wins, ERA and strikeouts (66), has been outstanding over his last four starts, going 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA. He yielded two runs in seven innings of a 13-4 win over Chicago on Sunday.

Lind is slated to be the designated hitter Saturday after he was activated from the disabled list following the series opener. The first baseman has been out since May 8 with a lower back strain.

He was on a tear prior to getting hurt, hitting .457 with six homers and 15 RBIs in 12 games. Lind has a .343 average over his last nine meetings with Baltimore.

Toronto's J.P. Arencibia is batting .308 with six RBIs in the last six games after connecting for his first grand slam Friday. The catcher is hitting .255, but his nine homers and 30 RBIs rank among the rookie leaders, while 19 of his 41 hits have gone for extra bases.

Arencibia is vastly more productive versus left-handers, compiling a .357 average with four homers. He's hitting .218 against righties.

"He's done an excellent job at the plate and behind the plate, and (Friday) he had a very good game all-around," manager John Farrell said.

The Orioles, losers of six of seven, will turn to Jake Arrieta (6-3, 4.97). The right-hander will be looking to rebound from one of his worst performances of the season in trying to gain a share of the AL wins lead.

He surrendered four runs and four hits with four walks in 2 1/3 innings of a 4-3 loss at Seattle on Monday.

"I'm pretty upset about this one," Arrieta told the Orioles' official website.

Arrieta was impressive in his only start versus Toronto on Sept. 14, allowing four hits with five strikeouts in six scoreless innings of an 11-3 win at Camden Yards.

Adam Jones is batting .407 with 11 RBIs in his last 12 home games, and he's hitting .347 with seven RBIs over his past 12 meetings with Toronto.

Jones is 8 for 23 with a homer against Romero.

The Orioles' 37 errors rank among the most in the AL, and they have committed 12 in nine games. Rangers-Indians Preview
The Texas Rangers have had little trouble scoring runs during their recent surge, a trend which may not bode well for struggling starter Fausto Carmona and the slumping Cleveland Indians.

Texas's high-powered offense visits Cleveland on Saturday night to continue their four-game set.

The Rangers (32-26) beat the Indians 11-1 on Friday for their sixth victory in seven games. The lopsided win marked the fifth time during that stretch Texas has scored at least seven runs and the third with at least 10.

Josh Hamilton went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer, and Nelson Cruz added a two-run shot. Hamilton is 6 for 14 (.429) and Nelson Cruz is 4 for 10 (.400) with two home runs lifetime against Carmona.

If Carmona (3-6, 5.31 ERA) is to help Cleveland (33-22) snap out of a funk in which it's lost seven of 10, he'll likely have to improve vastly from his previous three starts.

The right-hander has lost each of those outings while sporting a 10.06 ERA, giving up 21 runs and 21 hits through 17 innings. Carmona allowed nine runs -- seven earned -- over four innings Monday in an 11-1 loss at Toronto.

He hasn't fared much better recently against Texas, going 0-3 with a 6.86 ERA in the last four starts while allowing 10 walks and 15 runs through 19 2/3 innings.

The Rangers' offense has benefited starter Derek Holland (4-1, 4.96), who has never faced the Indians.

Though Holland's record looks impressive, he's received 6.89 runs of support per nine innings to overcome an ERA nearly a full run more than his 4.08 mark last season. The left-hander has allowed at least three runs in eight of 11 starts while pitching into the seventh inning in four of them.

He went six straight starts without a decision before beating Tampa Bay on Monday, allowing five runs through 5 2/3 innings.

Although Holland has pitched poorly his last two starts, he'll be facing an offense that has cooled considerably.

The Indians, who still owns the AL's best record, have scored 11 total runs in their last seven defeats while amassing 26 during the three wins in that 10-game stretch.

"We're going through a rough spot like everybody else," manager Manny Acta said. "I'm very thankful we still haven't gone through one of those long stretches like everyone else, and we want to keep it that way."

Grady Sizemore once again hit in the middle of the lineup rather than leadoff to compensate for the absence of slugger Travis Hafner, who strained his right oblique in batting practice May 18.

Cleveland has dropped a season-high four straight at home after Friday's loss, which also continued Texas' dominance against the Indians. The Rangers have won 14 of the last 17 meetings and nine of the last 10 at Progressive Field.

"The past two nights we've played some good baseball," manager Ron Washington said. "I just hope we can continue it because at any moment (the Indians) can rise up."

Elvis Andrus went 4 for 5 with a three-run double and has hit safely in each of his 15 career games against Cleveland. Phillies-Pirates Preview
With 13 All-Star appearances, three Cy Young Awards and three postseason series MVPs, the first four members of the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation make it rather easy to overlook any other starter.

Don't expect the Pittsburgh Pirates to discount Kyle Kendrick.

Kendrick has won all four career starts against Pittsburgh, an outcome the Pirates hope to change when they look to deal the visiting Phillies a fourth consecutive loss Saturday night.

Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels give Philadelphia (34-23) baseball's most feared rotation, and Hamels has been better than anyone lately.

The left-hander pitched well enough to win his fourth consecutive start Friday, allowing one hit and a run over eight innings, but the Phillies' offense couldn't give Hamels a lift. Jose Tabata's 12th-inning single drove in Xavier Paul to give the Pirates a 2-1 win.

"When you play teams like that, you want to go out there and prove a point," Paul said. "Make a statement that we can play with these guys."

The Phillies were held to one run or fewer for the second straight game and 12th time this season -- even in their first game with their regular lineup in 2011.

"I think this lineup is going to hit," manager Charlie Manuel said. "It has to hit. I've got confidence in those guys hitting."

Manuel should feel confident in his mound presence Saturday, even in a fill-in effort. With Joe Blanton injured and Vance Worley back in the minor leagues to work on his command, Kendrick (3-3, 3.18 ERA) will make his third start.

The right-hander has had mixed results in the first two, pitching five scoreless innings in a win over Atlanta on May 7 but surrendering five runs in three innings in a loss to Colorado on May 19.

There's been nothing mediocre about Kendrick's previous work against Pittsburgh, though, as he's posted a 2.61 ERA and lasted at least seven innings in each of his four starts.

Kendrick's last trip to PNC Park produced his lone career complete game, a 12-4 victory July 3.

Philadelphia scored 12 runs in both of Kendrick's wins over the Pirates (27-29) last season, but it'll be hard-pressed to do much offensively against Charlie Morton (5-2, 2.51).

The right-hander, who leads the majors with a 78.2 ground-ball percentage thanks to a devastating sinker, has a 1.21 ERA in his last four starts and right-handers are hitting .190 against him overall.

Morton got plenty of ground balls Monday against the Mets, but New York managed to find some holes. Three of the 11 hits he gave up were infield singles, leading to three runs -- one earned -- before leaving without a decision in a 7-3 loss. That was still enough to impress Mets manager Terry Collins.

"Morton lived up to everything I've heard about him and saw about him," Collins said. "That is as good a sinker as I've seen in a long time."

Morton is certainly a better pitcher than the one who went 2-12 with a 7.57 ERA last season, and he'll hope that leads to improved results versus Philadelphia. He's 0-2 with a 9.75 ERA in three career starts against the Phillies, and Jimmy Rollins is 5 for 7 in their matchups.

Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez are a combined 3 for 15 against Morton, but they might find better luck Saturday. Tigers-White Sox Preview
The Detroit Tigers fell short of matching their longest win streak over the Chicago White Sox, but Justin Verlander has his chance to continue his dominance of the AL Central rivals.

The Tigers ace will try to win his seventh straight over the resurgent White Sox and fourth in a row overall Saturday night.

In Friday's opener of a 10-game homestand, Chicago (28-31) won its season-high fourth in a row and ended a nine-game skid to Detroit (29-27). The White Sox used home runs from Carlos Quentin, Brent Lillibridge and Juan Pierre to earn that 6-4 victory, but they might find it difficult to repeat that performance against Verlander (5-3, 3.12 ERA).

The right-hander enters the game 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA in his last five starts, a stretch that began with his second career no-hitter May 7 in Toronto. He scattered four hits over 7 2/3 innings in Sunday's 3-0 win over Boston while throwing a career-high 132 pitches.

"His mindset was tremendous," manager Jim Leyland told the team's website. "He was on a mission."

He's been even better lately against Chicago, going 6-0 with a 2.03 ERA in the last six matchups. Verlander allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings and struck out eight in a 9-3 victory at Comerica Park on April 22.

While the Tigers starter has been successful since his latest no-hitter, former teammate Edwin Jackson (4-5, 4.63) has dealt with inconsistency since his gem last season for Arizona.

The right-hander is 9-11 with a 4.44 ERA since no-hitting Tampa Bay last June 25 and coming off a difficult outing. After allowing one run in his previous start, Jackson was tagged for six over 6 2/3 innings in Toronto last Saturday, including three runs in the first.

"Today was a fight," Jackson told the team's website. "Once you get down, 3-0, in the first inning, it's easy to fold and crumble, but we continued to battle back."

He fared worse in Detroit on April 23, giving up eight runs and 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings of a 9-0 defeat. Jackson is 0-2 with a 6.98 ERA in the last three starts against his former club after going 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA in his previous five.

The right-hander, though, might get some help with leading hitter Paul Konerko expected to return to the lineup Saturday. The White Sox slugger, batting .310 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs, was scratched Friday after undergoing a minor procedure to remove a loose fragment in his left wrist.

Konerko is hitting .323 with four homers in his last 17 games against the Tigers but is 5 for 41 (.122) in his career versus Verlander. A.J. Pierzynski, who has four consecutive two-hit games, has fared better against the right-hander, going 17 for 52 (.327) with three homers.

Carlos Quentin, batting .353 with eight RBIs in his last five games, also has three home runs off Verlander and is 8 for 26 (.308).

Twins-Royals Preview
The Minnesota Twins got off to a rocky start on their 10-game road trip, but they've recovered with two straight victories against the Kansas City Royals.

Nick Blackburn has bounced back from his own rough stretch, and he looks to continue his unbeaten run Saturday night and help the Twins match a season high with their third straight win.

The Twins (19-37) are the only team in the majors with less than 23 victories and suffered a three-game sweep in Detroit to begin their trek. However, Minnesota took its second straight game from the Royals (25-32) on Friday, winning 5-2 and helping Carl Pavano earn his 100th victory.

Michael Cuddyer hit his 18th career home run against Kansas City, his most against any team. He's hitting .361 in his last nine games versus Minnesota's division rival.

Blackburn (4-4, 3.57 ERA) lost four straight outings April 9-28 but has been solid since, going 3-0 with a 2.53 ERA over his last six outings. He didn't earn a decision Monday after allowing five runs over six innings in Minnesota's 6-5 loss to Detroit.

However, the right-hander hasn't fared very well against the Royals, going winless in his last seven starts against them with three losses and a 7.39 ERA. He last beat Kansas City on Sept. 9, 2008.

Minnesota has outscored the Royals 13-4 in the first two games of this series, and Denard Span helped lead the charge Friday. He went 2 for 5 with a two-run double for his third multi-hit game in his last four. Span is 7 for 20 (.350) during that stretch.

He'll likely need to build on his performance if he's to have success against Royals starter Luke Hochevar (3-5, 4.96 ERA), whom he's struggled against throughout his career.

Span is hitting .136 (3 for 22) against Hochevar, but the Royals' former No. 1 overall pick hasn't pitched all that well of late.

The right-hander is winless in his last five starts, losing twice with a 4.28 ERA. He didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Los Angeles Angels, allowing four runs through five innings in Kansas City's 10-8 defeat.

However, Hochevar's last win came against the Twins on May 1, when he allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 10-3 victory. He's 3-2 with a 4.94 ERA, 23 walks and 26 strikeouts in eight career starts against Minnesota.

Kansas City has scored two runs in each of its last three games as it continues fading after a surprising start, losing 15 of 20.

"We couldn't find the holes," manager Ned Yost said. "We hit balls right at guys all night long. Pavano had great location, and he did it with two pitches. He did it with a fastball and a change-up. He threw three or four sliders and he changed speeds real effectively. He got us out front, a lot."

One of the few bright spots in the Royals' rough stretch has been rookie Eric Hosmer. The first baseman, called up May 5 and regarded as one of Kansas City's top prospects, has at least two hits in four of his last five games while hitting .378 with 10 RBIs since May 27.
