Fortis fans know that the most exciting timepieces in Basel aren’t always found in the exhibition hall.

Baselworld 2016 has come and gone, and once again, some of the most exciting news wasn’t found in the main exhibition halls. Savvy visitors knew to head straight for the Hotel Dorint located near the Basel exhibition grounds. This is where Fortis previewed their latest offerings, including the exciting new Classic Cosmonauts Collection.

The Classic Cosmonauts are a fresh new interpretation of the legendary Official Cosmonauts Chronograph, the first automatic mechanical timepiece to be certified for space travel. Fortis has been developing space rated timepieces for over forty years and these exceptional timing tools are still the only official timepieces of the Russian Space Program.

This year, Basel visitors got a preview of the first major update to the legendary Official Cosmonauts Chronograph. The new Classic Cosmonauts feature a redesigned 42 mm bicolor housing with a hi-tech ceramic bezel. Also making its debut is a sapphire crystal caseback, providing a clear view of the precision 7750 W Valjoux mechanical movement. The screwdown pushers are retained from the original 1994 model, along with an integrated tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel.

This modern interpretation of a Fortis legend was a hit with Baselworld visitors. With its larger 42 mm case, ceramic bezel, and exhibition caseback, the new Classic Cosmonauts were enthusiastically received by buyers and watch enthusiasts as a space rated timepiece for the modern world. It is only a matter of time before this superbly executed update joins earlier Official Cosmonaut Chronographs in space.

Details and Refinements Define Fortis at Basel 2016

Last year, Baselworld visitors hailed the Fortis Aeromaster as an instant classic. This year, Fortis returns to Basel, Switzerland with a sophisticated new interpretation of the popular Aeromaster. Based on the legendary Fortis B-42, the 2016 Aeromaster is still the quintessential pilot’s chronograph. Like the original Aeromaster, this iconic 42 mm tool watch features a rugged stainless steel case and large, uncluttered pilot’s style dial.

Fortis master watchmakers didn’t rest on their laurels however. Basel visitors will be quick to notice sophisticated new refinements, including precisely incised indices, giving the minute scale engraved on the chapter ring a unique 3-D appearance. The addition of oversized Superluminova coated sword hands and raised Arabic numbers make this one of the most legible pilot’s chronographs ever. Precisely crafted details like the incised arrow and double dots at 12 o’clock, and the artistically stylized sub-seconds dial at 9 o’clock add to the distinctive look of this modern classic.

On March 17, when the watch industry descends on Basel for the annual Baselworld watch and jewelry fair, savvy visitors will head straight to the Hotel Dorint located near the Basel exhibition grounds to view the latest offerings from Fortis. Fortis has been exhibiting in Basel ever since it opened a factory in nearby Grenchen, Switzerland in 1912. Why the world’s largest watch and jewelry show is essential to a small watch company like Louis Erard.

When Louis Erard and André Perret began making watches in 1929, the pair were convinced that watchmaking expertise, a commitment to quality, and interesting complications could go hand-in-hand with affordable prices. Few of their competitors agreed with this philosophy, but the company persevered and began to attract a loyal band of followers.

Louis Erard timepieces were prized by watch aficionados and other watchmakers, but the brand never became popular with the general public until they started exhibiting at Baselworld. As a wider audience started to see and appreciate these original, high quality mechanical timepieces, the popularity of the brand and its unique philosophy grew. The new Excellence Skeleton and Regulator Power Reserve models got lots of buzz at the show, along with favorable reviews from some of the industry’s most respected watch writers.

Fortis Watches was among the many exhibitors in Basel, having made the annual trip from its Grenchen headquarters, armed with cases of new watches and classic collections. Guests of Fortis in Basel convened at the Hotel Dorint, adjacent to the main pavilion, in a spacious suite ideal for previewing and surveying the latest Fortis models.

“Face the New” is the slogan of Fortis Watches today, a phrase that defines the brand’s position and declares that sometimes, the best way to return to your roots is to embrace new challenges – or Face the New. The current collections demonstrate this value and commitment.

Fortis Cosmonautis

The Fortis connection to space travel is well documented, as are its Cosmonaut watches, which have been standard equipment for the Russian Federal Space Agency since 1994. In fact, the agency’s emblem is engraved on the caseback of every Official Cosmonauts model. In Basel, the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph was among the classic Fortis watches on display, famous for its dial design and its movement, a Swiss made ETA 7750.

The newest model in the Cosmonautis Collection also appeared in Basel. The Monolith is a prototypical Fortis tool watch with a legible dial and rugged construction that includes a black PVD-coated stainless steel case and Swiss made ETA 2836-2 automatic movement. The Monolith is water resistant to 650 feet and offers a strap or bracelet for every occasion, including a leather performance strap, black PVD metal bracelet or rubber strap.

Fortis Aviatis

The Fortis Aviatis Collection is dedicated to aviation and pilot watches – another Fortis area of expertise – and there were plenty of examples on display in Basel. Notably, the 100th anniversary Daybreaker Recon and Daybreaker Stealth, two watches with an identical build other than the color of the dials: the Recon is white with blue accents while the Stealth is black with white accents. These extraordinary Flieger models feature the exclusive Fortis Calibre F-2012 movement, made up of more than 500 parts that run multiple complications including a chronograph, alarm, GMT and more. Every Daybreaker model is a certified chronometer and limited to 100 pieces worldwide.

Fortis guests also had a first look at the new Fortis Blue Horizon, a traditional day/date Flieger housed in a black PVD-coated stainless steel case with a metallic-brown sunray dial. Blue Horizon models represent a new look for Fortis pilot watches, combining high-tech materials with a nostalgic disposition. The Blue Horizon is powered by an ETA 7750 and features an exhibition caseback.

Fortis Aquatis

Air and space aren’t the only realms for which Fortis designs robust watches for explorers and trendsetters. Watches in the Aquatis Collection are designed for aquatic adventure, especially its Marinemaster models, which first launched in the 1940s. Fortis continues to add different color combinations to the collection including yellow/black and red/black variants. Marinemaster watches offer water resistance to 650 feet and employ unidirectional rotating bezels with deep scalloped edges as well as large crowns for easy handling.

Marinemaster watches also come in chronograph versions, including a popular orange/black model. It has all the features of the non-chrono version but is augmented by triple sub-dials as a result of its chronograph movement. Marinemaster watches are ocean-ready with rubber straps or stainless steel bracelets.

Fortis Terrestis

Watches from the new Terrestis collection were among the most well received in Basel this year, as Fortis expands into the terrain of civilian life with retro-styled dress and casual-sport watches that complement its durable tool and adventure collections. For example, the 19Fortis is a three-handed dress watch with a date complication, replete with pleated texturing, a blued seconds hand and rose gold plated hands and markers. The current 19Fortis has two dial variations: the white “a.m.” dial or black “p.m.” version, and a solid 5N rose-gold case is also available.

The flagship of the new Fortis Terrestis Collection is the Fortis Tycoon. This elegant men’s timepiece combines state-of-the-art technology with a genuine reverence for the traditional Swiss craftsmanship that made the Fortis brand what it is today.

Fortis Art Watches

In Basel, Fortis also introduced the newest Rolf Sachs model – 2π – the latest collaboration between Fortis and the renowned artist and designer. The colorful and original mathematical design on the dial of the 2π (2 Pi) was designed by Sachs and fits the oeuvre of previous Sachs models for Fortis. Although the design of the 2π is quite cerebral, the watch itself is pure Fortis with its thick luminous material with blue afterglow, a black PVD-coated stainless steel case and a Swiss made F-2014 movement. The 2π is a limited edition of 150 pieces.

On March 19 the who’s who of the watch industry will gather in the medieval city of Basel, Switzerland to begin the annual eight-day odyssey known as Baselworld, the world’s biggest and most important watch and jewelry fair.

One company that exhibits annually in Basel is Fortis, a brand with an even longer history than the fair itself, having opened its factory doors in nearby Grenchen, Switzerland in 1912. Fortis first raised eyebrows in Basel in 1926 when it introduced the Harwood – the first automatic watch. Fortis remains a leader in innovation with an unwavering desire to conquer new frontiers – including space – where Fortis watches have dominated for more than 20 years and 100,000 earth orbits.

In Basel, Fortis sets up in a private suite at the Basel Dorint Hotel, adjacent to the main Baselworld pavilion*, where it hosts its valued partners and guests. Visitors to the suite this year will handle a host of Fortis watches including two new timepiece collections.

Fortis Tycoon – Basel 2015

The first is the Tycoon, a watch in the Terrestis collection, which pays homage to Fortis watches of the 1930s and ’40s with its slim case, domed crystal and straightforward functionality. While the look is vintage, Tycoon watches are light-years ahead of their predecessors in terms of movement technology – each watch is equipped with a Swiss made ETA movement. The Tycoon represents the best of vintage style with the best of modern engineering.

The Tycoon also exudes the brand’s DNA. “We give the adventure-seeking gentleman an instrument suitable for every event, from the racetrack to a black-tie party,” says Fortis CEO Maximilian Spitzy.

Fortis Aeromaster – Basel 2015

The second collection being introduced at Baselworld this year is the Fortis Aeromaster in either “Dawn” or “Dusk” versions. These models of the Aeromaster have all the characteristics of classic Fortis pilots’ watches including the large sword hands, large luminous markers and Swiss made automatic ETA movements. But unlike other Fortis pilots’ chronographs, the Aeromaster Dawn and Aeromaster Dusk have original looks, with sunray patterns on brown dials as well as a mix of red and beige elements.

The iconic 40 mm Spire reinterprets the iconic Just Cavalli snake and adds a luxurious dial with diamond dust or mother-of-pearl details.

Just Cavalli did not forget about the men in 2014, introducing the big, bold and decidedly masculine Just Iron Collection. Available in chronograph and three-hand configurations, these oversize 44 mm creations have a contemporary, urban vibe that Just Cavalli’s young, international customers are looking for.

Also featured at Just Cavalli’s Baselworld booth was the popular Just Dream Collection with its colorful and captivating feminine styles, along with the refined Luminal Collection with its unique enamel and crystal dials, conveying a spirit of lightness and luminosity.

With the 42nd annual Baselworld Fair already a memory in the eyes of visitors, it is abundantly clear that Louis Erard dazzled the watch industry again. The stunningly beautiful Louis Erard booth was well attended, and visitors were delighted to learn that the 83-year-old brand was continuing their policy of manufacturing high quality luxury watches at a reasonable price.

New for 2014 were several superb all-mechanical 500-piece limited edition timepieces and more of the brand’s first quartz watch collection. Notable at Baselworld were several exciting new additions to Louis Erard’s nostalgic 1931 Collection. Each of these vintage designs has been strictly limited to 500 pieces worldwide and comes in a special presentation box.

The 1931 Vintage Small Seconds 66 226 AA 01 features a beautiful silver-tone dial with a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and easy-to-read date window at 3 o’clock. A premium Sellita SW-290 automatic movement powers the handcrafted watch, which includes an exhibition back to view the decorated oscillating weight and individual edition numbers from 1 to 500. This 40 mm stainless steel timepiece has been equipped with a beautiful black leather strap with cream topstitching.

The 1931 Vintage Chronograph 78 225 AA 01 continues the vintage vibe with a fabulous silver-toned chronograph dial that provides the perfect contrast for the traditional blued steel hands. The 42.5 mm chronograph features 12-hour and 30-minute totalizers, along with a free running small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. A Swiss made ETA 7750 Valjoux automatic movement powers this superb vintage inspired chronograph watch.

The superb new 42 mm Men’s Moon Phase caught visitor’s attention with a central pointer-style hand to indicate the day of the month on a chapter ring scale. The watch features a beautiful moon phase indicator at 6 o’clock and even comes with a set of matching moon phase cufflinks. Powered by an ETA 2824 automatic movement, coupled with a Dubois Dépraz 9000 module for the moon phase complication, this special edition timepiece is the embodiment of Louis Erard’s commitment to craftsmanship and traditional values.

The star of the show was a spectacular 42 mm 18K pink gold moon phase chronograph with 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers and a moon phase indicator at 6 o’clock. The lustrous 18K pink gold watch has been fitted with a genuine crocodile strap with a matching 18K gold pin buckle.

Baselworld 2014 Watch and Jewelry Show March 27 – April 3

The 42nd annual Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Show is just around the corner and exhibitors, journalists and visitors from around the world are preparing. Once again, the fair will unite key industry figures, buyers and the media in this exclusive global networking event.

Baselworld is indeed a business-centric environment. It provides an opportunity for brands to connect with their dealers, to initiate and deepen relationships, and to stay in touch with the viewpoints of those who help shape their product lines from a global perspective. Last year the Baselworld 2013 fair played host to 122,000 visitors, 1,460 exhibitors and 3,610 journalists from around the world.

The influence of Baselworld on trends and innovations in the watch and jewelry sector cannot be overstated, nor can the fair’s overall impact on global sales. According to statistics released by MCH Basel Exhibition, it is estimated that approximately 80 percent of global sales of watches and jewelry are generated at Baselworld.

In addition to these prolific business-to-business activities, Baselworld is a focal point for the media. A single exhibitor might welcome up to 1,200 or more journalists over the course of the eight days. The thousands of journalists stay busy around the clock, moving from meeting to meeting, blogging, recording and snapping photos of everything new while building a stockpile of stories to develop over the weeks and months ahead.

Last year represented a huge milestone in the show’s history: millions of dollars were spent on expanding and revamping the exhibition area. The results were extraordinary. The setup alone now requires a workforce of approximately 20,000 people according to MCH. Baselworld is like a small city – an astonishing space composed of multi-story pavilions and 18 miles of walkways.

The medieval city of Basel is located in the north where the Swiss, French and German borders meet. It is one Switzerland’s most important cultural and industrial centers and a gateway to many of Switzerland’s famous watchmaking regions.

It didn’t take long for visitors to Baselworld 2013 to discover Meccaniche Veloci’s unique connection to the world of speed. The brand’s highly visible booth showcased not only Meccaniche Veloci’s racing inspired watch collections, it also showcased the actual racing cars that their most exclusive collections were made from.

Every watch in the exclusive Meccaniche Veloci “Only One” collection is literally one of a kind. To produce these unique and extremely exclusive timepieces, each watch is constructed using recovered materials from the world of speed. The dial could be fabricated from the fiberglass fairing of a well-known championship racing car, or the fairing from a racing motorcycle.

To make these watches, Meccaniche Veloci has been able to obtain actual body panels and components from famous racing vehicles and used them to create one-of a-kind timepieces. When a suitable component has been located, areas of interest are identified and then individually unique dials are cut from the material.

These recovered racing items, complete with the circular holes where material has been removed to make a dial, were proudly displayed in dramatic glass cubes at Baselworld to demonstrate the authenticity of the “Only One” concept. Since exotic materials like carbon fiber and magnesium are difficult to cut and machine, only a few of these exclusive watches are ever produced.

Although it was Meccaniche Veloci’s one-of-a-kind display that captured the attention of Baselworld visitors, the company makes other racing inspired watches as well. Racing inspired designs like the Quattro Valvole 48 Four Strokes, 44 Chronograph, Due Valvole and the exciting new Chrono Driver are also produced in limited numbers for discriminating watch aficionados.

Louis Erard has become a giant success story in the Swiss watchmaking industry. Since the company’s purchase in 2003 by a group of private investors headed by Alain Spinedi, Louis Erard has produced well over 100,000 watches. In addition, Louis Erard is currently making their own watch movement for use in their classic designs.

Louis Erard’s Baselworld 2013 booth clearly reflected their unrivaled success. Last year’s booth was smaller and not as noticeable as this year’s, which was widely applauded as one of the most beautiful booths at Baselworld. The Louis Erard exhibit was packed within hours of opening on press day.

After a $450 million makeover and a record number of visitors, the world’s most important watch and jewelry show confirmed what many in our industry already knew: the world loves wristwatches!

The Baselworld World Watch and Jewelry Show is over for another year. 120,000 visitors from over 100 different countries got their first look at the latest timepiece developments and innovations from over 1,450 different companies in a spectacular, newly renovated 1.5 million square foot exhibit space. After all the networking and parties were over, most participants agreed that this was the best Baselworld ever.

With a brand new two-story superstructure rising above Baselworld’s famous Messeplatz Exhibition Square, visitors, the press, and watch industry professionals enjoyed a sophisticated new ambience that left many looking forward to Baselworld 2014.

Baselworld 2013 was full of excitement and surprises for long time attendees. Rolex impressed everyone with a huge new exhibit space that was double the size of their 2012 exhibit area. The powerful Swatch Group dominated at the end of Hall 1, with a space large enough for their impressive roster of brands, which included familiar names like Rado, Omega, Breguet and Jaquet Droz.

The second floor of this impressive new Hall was devoted to the world of fashion, with an impressive showing by Gevril Group brands like Versace, Versus, and Salvatore Ferragamo. At the end of this hall was the beautiful booth of Gevril’s Louis Erard brand, which many attendees considered one of the nicest in the entire show. Gevril brands Bino, Catorex, Fortis, Jowissa, Laurens, and Lorenz also made an appearance at Basel 2013 in nearby offsite locations.

Baselworld 2013 Innovation

Baselworld has always been the place where manufacturers show off their most impressive new developments, and 2013 proved to be a banner year for innovation. Hublot showed off a mechanical marvel called LaFerrari with an amazing 50-day power reserve. Omega showed off a new type of balance spring created from a thin wafer of silicon. This precisely manufactured silicon spiral is perfectly symmetric and only one quarter the thickness of a metal spring, greatly improving the accuracy of the traditional mechanical watch. There were also scratchproof gold cases on display and some manufacturers even promised a maintenance-free mechanical movement.

With the addition of this black model, the Power Reserve watch line now consists of three variations: a black dial, a silver-tone dial and a white dial 80 piece limited edition with an 18 kt. rose gold case. All three share the same dial layout; however, the black dial offers what is perhaps the most sumptuous version to date.

The combination of white and silver elements on a deep black background is timeless, and no more so than on the Excellence Power Reserve, due in part to the simplicity of the dial design. A power-reserve indicator between 10 and 11 o’clock is crescent shaped and cut into the numerals X and XI; a small-seconds indicator at 6 o’clock is composed of a thin cross that divides the minute quarters; the brand and model names reside below the XII, and; the serifed Roman numerals are thin, elongated and placed close to the edge of the dial, further enhancing its neat arrangement. Elegant and gently curved feuille (“leaf” in English) style hands offer a pleasing contrast to the sharper lines of the Roman numerals.

Notably, the Power Reserve does not have a seconds or minutes track, meaning tracking time to the second is not easy. This is often the case on a dress watch and it is entirely intentional; the purpose of the watch, after all, is less related to utilitarian timekeeping; instead, it is geared toward preserving the romantic sensibilities of old-world watchmaking and very in tune with the Louis Erard philosophy of design and pride in heritage.

This is not to suggest that the Power Reserve is not mechanically astute. In fact, it boasts a Swiss made ETA Peseux 7001 RM10 movement modified in-house by Louis Erard. The movement is hand-winding, further upholding the charm of a classic dress watch.

The sapphire crystal is treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The stainless steel case is decorated on the back and water-resistant to 165 feet. Louis Erard pairs the Power Reserve with a black croc-patterned leather strap with a steel folding clasp.

The La Neuveville Chronograph is, by definition, a sportier version of its predecessor, which was a dressy three-handed watch with a vintage feel. For the chronograph, RSW enlarges the stainless steel case to 44 mm in order to comfortably house the legendary ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic movement. The case design, however, maintains the appearance of the original with its smooth bezel and patented crank crown, which unscrews and folds up to form a crank by which the wearer can wind the watch.

On either side of the crank crown are the chronograph pushers. RSW puts a spin on the design of these, too, by shaping them like standard watch crowns – round with fluted edges – but turned sideways to fit inside the pusher apertures.

The need to accommodate sub-dials means the dial of the La Neuveville Chronograph is significantly fuller than its predecessor, but it remains stylish, symmetrical and balanced nonetheless. The layout of the sub-dials is characteristic of the Valjoux 7750, with a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock and small seconds at 9 o’clock. As a counterbalance, the day and date windows are at 3 o’clock.

Every automatic version of the RSW La Neuveville Chronograph, including this model with a black dial, has applied silver-tone hour markers. The other dial colors are blue and gray/silver. Each dial is finished with a sunray pattern. Upon close inspection, the inner circles of the sub-dials feature independent sunray patterns wrapped in circular engraving. The hour and minute hands have luminous areas; the subsidiary round hour markers are also luminous. The primary portion of the dial is surrounded by a minute-and-second track that is enclosed by a tachymeter scale.

Three bezel options are available for each model: the first is the smooth steel version pictured; the second and third have 12 and 84 diamonds respectively. Sapphire crystal is featured on the front and back of the watch. Every model can be mounted on either a black leather strap with steel folding clasp or a stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp.

La Neuveville Chronograph – Quartz

The RSW La Neuveville Chronograph also comes in a 42 mm model with a quartz movement. The crank crown is replaced with a standard crown and the layout of the sub-dials is slightly different, as is the addition of a big date at 12 o’clock. The 42 mm model has an additional case color option: yellow PVD with matching hands and hour markers as well as the option of a yellow PVD bracelet.

Mechanical automatic or quartz movement, strap or bracelet, diamond studded or polished steel, the La Neuveville Chronograph by RSW offers another classic option from the brand known so well for its modern contemporary flair.

Baselworld Turns 41 This Year, But How Did the Basel Fair Begin?

The Baselworld 2013 watch and jewelry show promises to be the biggest and most impressive to date, with an expanded and remodeled exhibition space designed to highlight the brightest and best of the watch and jewelry industry. But when and how did it begin?

The origin of the Basel fair dates back to 1917 and the first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (MUBA), which means “Swiss Design Fair Basel” in German. At the time, the show covered several Swiss industry sectors including a section for watches and jewelry. By the mid-1920s MUBA had several watch manufacturers in attendance, but it was not until 1931 that a dedicated pavilion was established at the MUBA for a Schweizer Uhrenmesse, or a Swiss Watch Fair. This remained, more or less, the status quo for four decades as the world navigated its way through immense uncertainty and change.

In 1972 a European Watch and Clock Exhibition was held in Basel in conjunction with the Swiss Watch Fair, which gave way to the first Europäische Uhren und Schmuckmesse (EUSM), or the European Watch and Jewellery Show, in 1973. This watershed moment marked the first time that companies from other European countries were invited, namely France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy.

A decade later, in 1983, the show was renamed Basel 83 with the numerals denoting the current year. To this day, industry professionals use the jargon “Basel” to refer both to the Baselworld show and to its famous host Basel, Switzerland on the Rhine River.

Basel 86 was the first time that exhibitors from outside Europe were admitted – a sign of the globalization occurring in trade among industries worldwide and the increased presence of non-Europeans visiting the fair. The name of the show was elongated in 1995 to “Basel 95 – The World Watch, Clock and Jewellery Show.”

In 1999, a new 387,000 square-foot watch hall opened (today’s Hall 1), designed to accommodate three-story displays; not surprisingly, the number of visitors to the Basel show increased by six percent the very next year.

The show was rebranded again in 2003 – Baselworld, The World Watch and Jewellery Show – and took another step toward its current designation as the most important watch and jewelry event of its kind, anywhere. The following year the new Hall of Universe (Hall 6) was completed, growing the show’s exhibition space and attracting more than 89,000 visitors. Attendance broke the 100,000 mark for the first time in 2007 – if Baselworld was somehow not on the calendar of “must attend” industry events the year prior, it most certainly was after 2007.

In 2013, ten years after the last rebranding, Baselworld is more popular than ever with more than 100,000 people from more than 100 countries attending annually. But this year also marks the end of an era: part of the modernization project includes significant changes around the Messeplatz, the popular outdoor exhibition square outside of Hall 1. Show organizers spent approximately $450 million U.S. dollars to modernize the facilities, and the expansion seems necessary if Baselworld is to maintain its reputation and accommodate future growth.

Expectations will be high come the opening of Baselworld 2013 on April 25, but there is little reason to think they will be met with anything but amazement. The future of Baselworld – The World Watch and Jewellery Show – is bright indeed.

Baselworld 2013 Watch and Jewelry Show April 25 – May 2

The Baselworld 2013 International Watch and Jewelery Show will be the largest and most important watch and jewelry trade show of the year. The Basel Fair takes place every spring in Basel, Switzerland, located along the Rhine River in the country’s northwest, bordering both France and Germany.

Baselworld Renovation

Baselworld 2013 promises to be the greatest Baselworld yet, not only because of the exponential growth and innovation occurring in the industry, but because the exhibition grounds are receiving a significant makeover.

The existing Baselworld exhibition area, which covers over 1.5 million square feet, is being expanded and revamped. By the time the final renovations are unveiled at Baselworld 2013, approximately $450 million U.S. dollars will have went in to modernizing the exhibition area. A detailed explanation of the renovation is posted on the Herzog & de Meuron website, the architects behind the overhaul.

The Baselworld 2013 renovation plans are highlighted by a new two-story superstructure above the famous Messeplatz Exhibition Square. This superstructure connects Hall 1 and Hall 3, increases their size, and adds a significant amount of new exhibition and presentation space in addition to an expanded open area below.

The results of these renovations promise to enhance the already unique atmosphere of Baselworld and provide even greater amenities to satisfy the requirements of its lively and professional international audience.

This timepiece comes either in steel or rose gold. I am not aware of a limited edition. It uses an in-house regulator power reserve complication. That Louis Erard is starting to create their own modules may be the beginning of something wonderful, perhaps the way to bring back history to this wonderful brand as a true watch “manufacture.”

The sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides guarantees excellent legibility. The caseback is decorated, and I would have loved to see the caseback through a sapphire crystal to admire the beautifully finished hand-wound movement. Nevertheless, this watch with its flat case sits comfortably on your wrist while providing adequate weight to make you feel that you are wearing a mechanical timepiece of Swiss manufacture.

On a hand-wound watch, I really find the power reserve complication very useful. You know when the time comes to wind your watch and will not miss it.

One of the new watches was the hand wound stainless-steel Louis Erard 1931 Small Seconds timepiece, powered by a Peseux 7001 movement. This new watch displays hours, minutes and seconds in a 40mm flat case that lays very nicely on one’s wrist, as I found for myself when I tried it on. The watch is available with three dial options: blue, silver-toned and grey, which sit under a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The blue and the silver dial possess gilded indices, which create a very special effect. The grey dial watch, however, has silver-toned hour-markers instead.

The first novelty is the versatile Grand Ocean Chronolady from the popular Grand Ocean Collection. A second addition to the Grand Ocean Collection is the men’s Grand Ocean Chronodiver, a watch that retains the genetic imprints of its predecessors but also introduces something entirely new: a bezel containing both stainless steel and rubber, which not only enhances functionality by improving grip, but also creates a balance in the overall design by uniting the black PVD-coated steel case with the black rubber strap. An ebony-black dial along with silvered indices and hands augments the cohesive modern look. The planisphere on the back of the Chronodiver is different than other Grand Ocean watches in that it provides a view from the North Pole. Another notable detail is the outside of the folding clasp, which is in the shape of a porthole with the Edox hourglass logo centered in the middle. The Grand Ocean Chronodiver houses a Ronda 5040.B movement and, naturally, this diver watch offers superior water resistance to the depth of 820 feet.

The third new release is the Chronorally Automatic Chronograph, part of the WRC Collection. Edox is the official timing sponsor of WRC. RSW, a brand known for atypical, futuristic and conceptual watches pays homage to its hometown of La Neuveville with one of three new watch collections at Baselworld 2012.

La Neuveville, the medieval city located on the shore of Lake Biel, is the home of RSW. To celebrate the city’s 700th anniversary in 2012, RSW introduces the city’s watch namesake, La Neuveville, a vintage-style dress watch featuring the RSW patented fold-out crank crown on the automatic model with an ETA 2824-2 movement and a traditional crown on the quartz-powered model with an ETA 955.112 movement. The case is available in steel or steel coated with yellow PVD. There are three dial variations: white, black and an exceptionally elegant sunray pattern in gray.

The newest model in the RSW High King collection, which features classic watch complications, is The Regulator. The hours and minutes are, of course, separate, as the complication dictates: a Roman-numeral counter at 12 o’clock tracks hours while the long minute hand stems from the central pivot. Different case and dial combinations are available. Each features the RSW patented fold-out crank system. The movement is an automatic RSW 1912 ETA based Dubois Dépraz 14070.

In the Urban Contemporary line, RSW takes its ultra-solid Diving Tool above ground with the Diving Tool Camo Limited Edition. Like every RSW Diving Tool, the watch retains its water resistance to 980 feet and has a screw-down crown. The movement is an automatic ETA 2824-2. The dial comes in two versions, Woodland (green) and Oceanic (blue) –- available in solid steel or in PVD-coated steel. Each combination is limited to 49 pieces. The watch comes packaged in a special case that includes a camo-style Swiss army knife and both a rubber and NATO strap.

It’s about time that New York’s most prestigious neighborhood inspired a watch worthy of its name.

There’s much work yet to be done to ready all the booths, but ready or not, the press preview is March 7, the day before Baselworld 2012 officially opens. The media will have an opportunity to view all the booths before the general public. There seem to be as many exhibit designs as there are timepiece styles, and the decor of the booths is really very creative. Although not permanent structures, many of the luxury booths have a very well-established fine look. I find it interesting to “watch” and see how each of the booths look once completed.

The evolution of Meccaniche Veloci continues with the introduction of the new Due Valvole at Baselworld 2012.

In just five years Meccaniche Veloci has already achieved what it has taken some watchmakers decades to accomplish. This young brand has literally taken the watch world by storm. Meccaniche Veloci’s celebrated Quattro Valvole line, based on the famous four-valve racing car engines, is widely regarded as one of the most innovative new designs in recent years.

Now, Meccaniche Veloci continues its evolution as a leader in industrial design and watchmaking innovation with a brand new creation: the Meccaniche Veloci Due Valvole. This exciting new timepiece, which makes its debut at Baselworld 2012, continues the Meccaniche Veloci tradition of combining motor engineering inspiration with the highest quality craftsmanship to produce truly unique timepieces.

The new 44mm Due Valvole features an innovative two time zone display that allows each of the two dials to be set separately. The larger dominant dial, reserved for the primary time zone, features a date window at 3 o’clock and has indices marked with an hourly scale. The smaller secondary time zone has its indices marked with a contrasting scale of minutes.

This breakthrough design, celebrating auto racing’s many famous two-valve engines, is a marvel of understated simplicity. The Due Valvole, like the celebrated designs that came before it, uses only finest materials, assembled by master craftsmen. The strap is attached directly to the case using four titanium screws. Two titanium crowns allow each dial to be set independently, while an anti-reflective scratch resistant sapphire crystal ensures that your view will remain unobstructed. The Due Valvole is powered by a premium Swiss-made movement and is water resistant to 33 feet.

While the boldly masculine styling of a Meccaniche Veloci timepiece isn’t for everybody, these breakthrough watches have acquired a loyal following among watch aficionados. Upending Current Convention in Time for Baselworld 2012

Innovations rarely materialize without first upending current convention, and often the best new ideas are borne from those architects with a vision to stand out and to astound. Sandra Martial launched Offshore Limited in 2009 with the understanding that the international market for watches was both extremely competitive and deeply entrenched. But she also knew there was a market for the style of watches she intended to build. As a testament to Martial’s foresight, Offshore Limited will appear once again at the world’s largest and most prestigious watch and jewelry fair, at Baselworld 2012 in March.

Offshore Limited’s philosophy of watchmaking is firmly avant-garde; rather than trying to recycle retro styles, or sticking to predictable shapes and prescribed layouts, the brand is moving full throttle with original creations that satisfy the ever-growing, large sport-watch market.

Brand DNA has much to do with the company’s success. The passion and daring can be attributed, at least in part, to Offshore Limited’s French heritage. Few would argue the extent to which the French influence the fashion world, with a long list of legendary designers and fashion houses whose collective know-how, or savoir-faire, always has a finger on the global pulse of what’s cool and what’s not.

Offshore Limited Collections

No watch complication is sportier or more popular than the chronograph, which is the mainstay of the Offshore Limited line, along with a few double and triple time-zone models. The belief is large watches for all – most are between 45 and 50 mm in diameter.

The current Offshore Limited line consists of several collections. The Force 4 is the brand’s signature watch featuring a chronograph, day and date indicators, and a dual time zone. The primary movement in the Force 4 is an ISASWISS 8172, which is shared by all current Offshore Limited chronographs. The Force 4 also contains a secondary mini-movement – a Ronda 1042 – to power the second time zone, which appears on the side of the watch in its own window and is a defining element of the Force 4.

Offshore Limited watches should not be considered gender specific, as both the Tornade and Z Drive chronograph collections are officially unisex. Both have adjunct collections, as does the Force 4, called Prestige, which represent Offshore Limited’s luxury models. Watches from the Prestige collections feature cubic zirconia stones inlaid using a CNC laser-cutting machine. Prestige models are striking, dazzling and completely prêt-à-porter.

Other collections include the sporty Ballast chronograph, with a case made of steel and aluminum, and two auto-inspired collections: the unique Commando chronograph, with shock-absorber springs visible through dial-side windows, and the Challenge XL chronograph with carbon-fiber dial and tachymeter.

The Cockpit collection rounds out the Offshore Limited line with a name that says it all: a perfect travel partner featuring a strapping 50 mm case and dual time zones, each powered by separate Ronda 751 movements.

Every Offshore Limited watch takes advantage of efficient and accurate quartz technology, which is very dependable, and features batteries with extended life spans, as well. Every watch is water resistant to 330 feet and is backed by a two-year manufacturer warranty.

As the largest and most exquisite watch and jewelry trade show in the world, Baselworld is the premier event of the year for vendors, industry insiders and the media.

More and more luxury goods and watch enthusiasts have been making their way to Basel each year to celebrate new releases and hobnob with the global elite. Baselworld must grow with demand, requiring expansion and modernization facilities at the Basel fairgrounds. The construction will be completed in two phases, with Phase 1 to be ready for Baselworld 2012.

The existing Hall 1 is being extended towards Exhibition Square, and when completed, will contain three new levels of exhibit space. Another brand new three-story exhibit hall will also be constructed nearby, and a third two-story building above Exhibition Square will link both hall complexes. These ambitious expansions will allow the entire exhibit area to accommodate the larger multistory booths that many vendors prefer, while making the entire exhibit area more compact and accessible for the convenience of visitors.

Despite major building construction at the Basel exhibition site, Baselworld 2012 will not be compromised – the full show, with all customary exhibition space and features, will go on. Baselworld 2012 will not fail to showcase the most coveted and innovative timepieces on the market with all the glitz and glamor that are hallmarks of the Baselworld Fair. After Baselworld 2012, Phase 2 of construction will begin. During this second phase of construction, all existing Baselworld exhibit halls will be dismantled and completely rebuilt in time for Baselworld 2013.

My Very First Visit to Baselworld

Basel is a city close to the German border with Switzerland and is the host to Baselworld, the largest annual watch and jewelry trade show in the world. Baselworld 2011 was the first year I attended Baselworld.

Baselworld is a must for watch dealers, journalists and enthusiasts alike, as it offers an opportunity to view the latest timepieces and developments in the watch industry. At Baselworld, you can also enjoy a fascinating atmosphere complemented by visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. Small companies and large corporations alike commit to being present at Baselworld every year.

Since I’m living much closer to Basel than when I used to live in Chicago, I decided to take the opportunity to see this amazing watch show. I wanted to visit the fair for two reasons: my interest in mechanical watches and to find new information to use for my watch blog. I didn’t really know what to expect from Baselworld. Moreover, I didn’t know how I could attend it.

I checked the Internet for information. Google was very helpful, and I found what I needed to contact Baselworld administration. While I wasn’t invited to come as a journalist, I nevertheless received a quick reply from Baselworld administration allowing me free access to the fair for the whole duration. What a great surprise, and a pleasant one at that!

Walking through the doors of Baselworld, you are greeted a somewhat overwhelming combination of impressions. You see the most famous watch brands in the main hall and feel like you are floating with the masses through a shadow world sidelined with bright lights of logos from Rolex, Patek Philippe, Zenith, and Chopard, as well as the Swatch Group at the end of the first hall. Added to this, I quickly realized that this is not just a regular size fair, it’s the biggest watch fair in the world, and it occupies many halls which you must navigate like a labyrinth. Sometimes it was really tricky to find the right route to take, and how to return. But that was probably me with my particular sense of orientation.

I brought back some fascinating memories experienced at Baselworld:

Long before I went to Basel, I met Sandra Martial from Offshore Limited via Facebook, and I took the opportunity to meet her and her husband at the fair. (Interestingly, this is one of the watch brands currently represented by Gevril Group in the United States.)

I was very impressed to see an enameler paint on an enamel dial at Jaquet Droz. Take a look at these two photos. You see the enameler at his workbench:

In addition, I liked the area where the AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants – representing the very best in high-end watchmaking) presented their watchmakers and timepieces and it was a great experience. I ended up having the pleasure to see, touch, and talk with the two Irish McGonigle brothers who explained to me their unique one of a kind timepiece. I have never seen anyone with such passion for watches.

I also saw many brands that I have never before seen or heard of, many small watch manufacturers that make high-end watches, and many companies that deliver mass products, such as the ICE watch.

I spent four days at the Baselworld fair. I had a wonderful time meeting many very interesting people and learning a lot about watches and the watch industry. There’s no question that I’m going to attend Baselworld again in 2012.

Planned Construction at Baselworld Will Set
New Standards for Luxury Exhibit Space

For nearly a century, the world’s leading watch manufacturers have been exhibiting their wares in Basel, Switzerland. The first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel dates all the way back to 1917. Over the years, the importance of this famous watch and jewelry trade show has continued to grow. By the time the show officially adopted the name Baselworld in 2003, it already occupied several large exhibit halls and was widely recognized as the world’s premier trade show in the luxury goods industry.

To accommodate the hundreds of thousands of visitors that the Basel Fair attracts every year, an ambitious new modernization program is now underway that will transform the huge Baselworld exhibit complex yet again. The new exhibit buildings will provide exhibitors with a total of 140,000 square meters of exhibit space, and allow visitors from around the world to enjoy unprecedented convenience as they convene to see what is new and important in the world of luxury.

Phase 1 of Construction to Be Ready for Baselworld 2012

Phase 1 of construction has already begun and will be completed in December of 2011. The existing Hall 1 is being extended towards Exhibition Square, and when completed, will contain three new levels of exhibit space. Another brand new three-story exhibit hall will also be constructed nearby, and a third two-story building above Exhibition Square will link both hall complexes. These ambitious expansions will allow the entire exhibit area to accommodate the larger multistory booths that many vendors prefer, while making the entire exhibit area more compact and accessible for the convenience of visitors.

The current sector concept for the show, with different products divided into specialized sectors within the six exhibition halls, will remain unchanged for Baselworld 2012. After this, Phase 2 of construction will begin. During this second phase of construction, all of Baselworld’s existing exhibit halls will be dismantled and be completely rebuilt.

It is anticipated that the exterior shell of these new buildings will be completed by the Fall of 2012. All interior construction should be completed by January of 2013, just in time for Baselworld 2013, the most exciting show that Baselworld has hosted yet.

Spending Quality Time Outdoors

Roamer is exploring new paths with the TrekkMaster — recently announced at Baselworld — paths away from the well-trodden route.

An altimeter, digital compass, barometer and thermometer make this robust outdoor watch a partner you can really trust on the hardest tours and under the most extreme conditions.

This expedition timepiece opens up new worlds. The Roamer TrekkMaster saves altitude profiles up to 5.6 miles and incorporates a highly accurate temperature sensor and barometer, as well. The unique compass function impresses by showing you the way. When determining direction, the seconds and hours hands on the analogue display slide over one another and point towards the North together. The watch tells you in which direction to go.

An additional special feature of the TrekkMaster is the combination of one analogue and two digital displays, enabling excellent legibility in addition to the range of other features. POLICE stood up, stood out and grabbed the attention of the young and cool at Baselworld 2011, stopping them right in their tracks. The lavish and ostentatious POLICE watches, jewelry and accessories exhibit at Baselworld was absolutely striking and completely arresting.

Baselworld 2011

More than 100,000 manufacturers, enthusiasts and vendors of watches, jewelry and precious stones flocked to Baselworld 2011, which from March 24-31 occupied six large buildings within the vast Messe complex at the center of Basel, Switzerland.

If you’ve never attended Baselworld, it’ll be difficult for you to visualize the luxury, the enormity and the thrill of this annual watch and jewelry trade show that has become a carefully guarded tradition for many and that features such legendary brands as Breguet, Chanel, Gevril, Gucci, Harry Winston, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tiffany & Co. and Versace.

Booths at trade shows typically consist of a small exhibit, a couple of tables and a few chairs. By contrast, booths at Baselworld or stands, if you prefer that nomenclature, are elegant boutiques as lofty as three stories high, replete with reception desks, display cases, conference rooms, and refreshment areas.

 

 

Visitors to most booths sit and enjoy a variety of beverages that include coffee and water “with or without gas,” in Baselworld-speak.

Imagine more than a thousand of these exquisite venues housed in half a dozen massive edifices and countless people from the world-over milling about, studying displays, taking snapshots, exchanging business cards and conducting meetings. Imagine too a wide variety of eateries and shops dotting the grounds with trolley trains called “trams” streaming by. This is Baselworld!
