My birthday was Thursday, October 9, but I didn't do much to celebrate it that day because I taught all day into the evening, capping the day off by giving an oral midterm exam to my evening class.

The following day, however, my spouse and I escaped San Francisco, and drove up to Mendocino, about a 150-mile drive inland and then up the coast of California. The town is quite picturesque, with water towers behind many of the older houses and a general late-Victorian atmosphere. It was a logging town for many years, until in the 1960s and '70s many artists and hippies moved up there and revived the place by making it into a coastal resort and artists' colony.

The Mendocino Hotel, where we stayed, dates from 1878. It has a Zagat-rated restaurant; but we opted for a much grander dinner venue, the Café Beaujolais, an excellent restaurant which it is my pleasure to recommend very highly. The place serves impeccable French-style dishes. We had a great three-course dinner there, capped off by a great Alvear Pedro Ximénez Solera 1828 sherry dessert wine.

While there, we looked around the coast, hiking out beyond the town to see the various coves and sea-caves that abound along the coast. We saw pelicans and cormorants along with the more usual sea gulls and grebes. We also saw three painters with easels and canvas set up in the cool, breezy morning, each rendering a unique version of the coast and seascape. One painter even made it into another one's canvas!

We looked around the town, too, with its shops and galleries. Mendocino has been the scene of quite a bit of filming of both movies and television. We visited "Jessica's house" (now a bed-and-breakfast), the place where Angela Lansbury played Jessica Fletcher in some scenes of the TV series Murder, She Wrote, filmed in the 1980s.

There are excellent jams and jellies sold in town, as well as good chocolates (we bought some of both), a killer espresso joint (Moody's Organic Coffee Bar on Lansing Street), and many art galleries; best of all, for me, was Perfumes Mendo, where a very gracious Judith Brandman sells many fine men's and women's scents. I ended up buying Chevignon and Keiko Mecheri Bois de Santal.

The drive up and back, the beautiful sunny and slightly crisp weather, the hotel and restaurant, and the scenic and laid-back town made a truly extraordinary birthday getaway, which my loving spouse Russ planned as a wonderful surprise. I'm one hell of a lucky guy!

Hi, all. A broad question that I wanted to ask while I've still got time to think and plan. If you were a high school student learning about perfume as part of a class, what you find helpful and interesting? What would freak you out or turn you off?
I teach a high school English class on the Gothic novel. We read Frankenstein, Dracula, and Suskind's Perfume. We also read a lot of shorter pieces: short stories, essays that help develop a particular theme, current journalism. Last time I taught Perfume, I found that the kids had little experience with perfume, and that many of them hadn't thought much about smell, how it matters to them, how to describe it. So I started each class with fifteen or so minutes of perfume smelling, little lectures about the history of perfume, how perfume is constructed, etc. The room got pretty frigging fragrant. I tended to present an olfactory family: vetivers one day, musks the next, roses, and so forth. But I think there must be more interesting and creative ways to go about the smelling. And we spent time writing about the perfumes and then attempting to describe them to each other, trying to associate them with situations and characters in the novel, and so forth. We read some stuff by Burr and Turin, a bit of Corbin's The Foul and the Fragrant, talked a bit about connections to magic and hermeticism, and actually I showed them a great old Basenotes thread about olfactory autobiography that they loved. I also asked them to write about an experience where smell became important.
It was fun, but I really wanted to ask you all what you'd do, and I was shy about asking at the time because I was very new and felt all dorky and exposed. Really, teaching the course was a big part of what got me into perfume in the first place.
So now that I'm feeling braver, I'm asking. And I'm excited for your suggestions. What would you do if you were teaching the course? What would you definitely want them to smell? to read? to think about? to write about?

I picked up a bottle since it was so cheep - the scent is really nothing like the original. This intense is very licorice and very sweet candy like.

It seems to last longer on me then the original Apparition.

What a joy to be able to kind of guess what someone might like and be able to help them find something they enjoy. I couldn't have done that without the help of others on this forum, and I just wanted to say thanks. Everyone here kind of contributes a little to my perfume knowledge every day, and challenges what I think I know. And that has helped me to share the joy of perfume with others in my life. Muchas gracias, people!

Well, I've had this scent for awhile now and it didn't wow me at first.. got it at the wrong time of year I guess as it just doesn't work so well in summer. I've worn it a few times recently though, and have fallen absolutely in love with it. Such a rich, complex, well blended scent. The finest formal scent I've got in my wardrobe, and although not my #1 overall, it's definitely one of the finest and most interesting blend of notes that I've come across, designer and niche included.

I've still got a lot left, and don't want to buy a backup right now because I fear it'll go off by time I get around to it, but eventually I'll need to replace it and eventually, too, it will become impossible to find as it has been long discontinued.

So, what scents are out there that are quite similar? Specifically, they need to have that hint of animalic dirtiness in them that the civet provides in Ungaro II. The blend of civet, rose, vanilla, and citrus, over the sensual vanilla/sandalwood base is just gorgeous. I've heard Caron PuH is similar. Who agrees and disagrees? It seems like it would be less animalic (if at all) and less complex, based on the pyramid. It'd be nice to find a scent that has a rose note, too.

Thanks everyone.
