Review of Monsieur de Rauch by Rauch

While MdR does contain a light labdanum and bergamot touch, the heavy coumarin and lavender doses place it squarely in classic fougere territory (would not describe as a chypre), and I definitely believe a 50s or 60s origination year. Rounded out with some earthy galbanum, spices, and subtle woods, it's a pleasant journey. A classic grampa cologne-style EdT, this should perform well in hot weather especially. The opening is imo the only more unique phase, containing some sharper and more bitter facets.

Review of Althaïr by Parfums de Marly

Hard not to compare this to Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille. Althair to my nose is a more flamboyant take. It opens unwiedly with many many things going on, semmingly clashing wit the vanilla. Then it starts to settle, simmering nicely and winning you over as it does so. It dries to Tobacco Vanille but with strong emphasis on vanilla. If you find TV too harsh or one dimensional (albeit tobacco spices flipping back and forth with vanilla) then you may enjoy this for its less harsh and more flashy demeanor, though you might crave TV if you are already a fan.

Review of B683 Extrait by Marc-Antoine Barrois

I find B683 extrait very different from B683 EdP. If one tries them simultaneously, B683 extrait kind of sandblasts the EdP which comes to seem mousy. The extrait is a strong, peppery oud, reminiscent of some of the Nishane ouds--complex, a bit synthetic, impressive range and depth. The listed note of green apple is extremely subtle for me. My rating is influenced here by a not very bona fide consideration: the likelihood that I, being me, would wear it. It is a perfume that makes me internally lament that more men don't have access to a subtle dose of fragrances like this; it could smell great on the right person.

Review of Sweet Serenade by Dua Fragrances

Sweet Serenade is a relatively recent Dua original from 2024, the first bottle I’ve purchased that’s an “AI creation” which I confess I do not totally understand but in this case yielded a really delectable and elegant gourmand. The note listing is fairly straightforward: vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, and dulce de leche. The fragrance is fittingly sweet, creamy, caramelized, with some of the sharp/dark/smoky aspects of dulce de leche, along with its denial of a more absolute sweetness, giving the blend a more well-rounded character, making it a bit easier to wear for the non-gourmand fans, or those that do not want to smell exactly...

When trying the five original Marc-Antoine Barrois scents at their tiny, elegant boutique in the Passage Vero-Dodat in Paris, I found them each more stunning than the last, and was sure I would return to make my choice. The salesperson gave me a free box of samples--certainly a long-gone practice--and for some reason, I could never settle on a scent I wanted. B683 Eau de Parfum is the original scent from this fashion house. Review of Incense & Cedrat by Jo Malone London

I find the opening kind of harsh and a little unpleasant, though I don't really know why. Thankfully, it settles down fairly quicly, and as does, it becomes very pleasant. The frankincense heart absolutely reminds me of an Anglican church, which I do like, and I also like the woody base.

Alternative to Riviera Nights Bogart

It's that time of year and I'm wanting but not needing (!) an easy going easy pleasing guilty pleasure autumnal cologne. Riviera Nights fit the bill 💯 but sadly not available or scalped at £70+... Jog on! For the same end , I considered Dunhill Desire Red, that's a bit too sweet n fruity. Avon's new wild country? I guess I'm looking for amber, tonkas, slight vanilla, dark fruit vibe, spices like cardamom and nutmeg.... Some of the Givenchy Gentleman line I think could fit the bill... Cheapies most welcome and preferred. £50< <£30 even better. 😁

How to weaken perfume?

Hello. Is there a way to weaken a perfume's projection/sillage, while maintaining longevity? I prefer more of an intimate projection but many scents aren't available as EDT ... looking for a solution! :)

Autumnal Fragrances?

May I ask for fragrance recommendations that work well right this time of year in seasonal places of the Northern Hemisphere? perhaps leading up into the winter. I am particularly interested in something that replicates the smell of autumn winds amid fallen leaves, or some spiced fall vibes. Something that smells good in the fall and maybe colder months is very welcome as well. Thank you for your time and in advance for your generous expertise!

Oh wow a Bois Imperial Extrait is coming this month

Never would have thought Bois Imperial would need an extrait as its nuclear with sillage that haunts you and huge projection but alas. Super excited as Bois has been my signature scent for 2 years now Apparently the extrait is a bit richer and still nuclear

Going to Europe - What should I look for?

I'm going on a river cruise down the Rhine. We'll be starting in Amsterdam and ending in Basel with a lot of time in Germany. Any recommendations for scents to try that I can't get here in the US? Stores to seek out at some of our destinations? Thanks!

Fun experience trying to get Chanel samples

I was at the mall the other day, and the nice ladies at the Nordstrom Chanel counter indicated that if I called Nordstrom headquarters, I'd be able to get samples of anything they had. So, this afternoon I went online and saw Nordstrom did in fact sell Egoiste, which I've been trying to sample for some time now. So, I called Nordstrom HQ, who informed me that they would not provide samples for Chanel, because Chanel doesn't like it or whatever. OK, it looks like Nordstrom is in the same boat as the rest of us. They suggested I try calling Chanel. I called Chanel, who put me on hold for some time, not a big deal. When I talked to the customer service...

Versace L'Homme - vintage vs current

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone can speak to differences between vintage and current Versace L'Homme ? I do have a small amount of vintage left (upper and lower case Versace label), and the current ones available on eBay and elsewhere seem reasonably priced. Happy to purchase a new one if people think it's still worth it. Thank you.
