Lines on copies, blurred impressions, spots on copies, unfused copies ( the print does not stick to the copies ) Lines on copies most of the time is from a very small spot on the glass. I have gone on a lot of service calls that only took a couple of minutes all that was needed was the small glass needed cleaned. Most copy machines have two separate glasses a small one beside the large one. The small glass is used when you run your document through the document feeder on the top of the copier. If there is a very small spot on the small glass your document is getting a line copied on it. Scrubbing the small glass with a good cleaner and soft cloth will usually take care of this problem. Spots on copies are usually from spots on the large glass. Cleaning the glass with a soft cloth should take care of some problems, you may have to scrub. The toner cartridge can cause problems from such as spots, streaks, blank copies, squeaks and other noises. The toner cartridge will some times work loose and causes some of these problems you can pull it out and push it back in. I have installed a new toner cartridge at least once and made a test copy that turned out to be blank I forgot to remove the seal from the cartridge. Blurred images is usually from bad or damp paper. When your print comes off the copies you are probably going to have to make a service call to repair the fuser.

Paper Jams

To make copies you need a good quality paper like Xerox brand a lot of copiers do not like bad paper. Inferior paper may cost less but will cost you more money in service calls and down time. Inferior paper will usually be slick and glossy. The strength of the paper is weaker with inferior paper, this will cause jams. The superior paper will be stronger, which allows the feed rollers to push and pull the paper through the paper path with out binding, tearing and wrinkling. The paper needs to be stored in dry area, some air conditioners causes damp paper. The paper is fed through the copier with rubber wheels if the paper is damp the wheels will lose traction and cause a jam error, just like driving a car on a wet road. The paper needs to be free of wrinkles, folds and tears again it is like driving a car on a smooth road or rough road. When you clear a paper jam and a very small piece of paper is torn off it some times blocks the sensor. You may think you have the jam cleared, but if says it is still jammed then you may have to use a can of compressed air to blow, or use a brush to remove a tiny piece of paper away from the sensor, also a dirty sensor will cause jams. The inside of a copy machine gets dusty from paper fibers this can be cleaned with a brush or blowing the dirt off of the sensors. Jams inside the machine should be left to a technician, there parts inside of copiers, printers and fax machines that are very sharp. I have gotten a couple of bad cuts from the inside frames, but you can pull the trays out to remove the bad papers. If you over load the paper tray paper not feed or will fall behind the tray at times and block the sensors which causes paper jams.

http://basiccopierrepairs.blogspot.com/

Welcome to basic copier repairs. This site provides tips and techniques to learn basic copier repairs for beginners. If I have not covered any of your questions feel free to send me an email and I will try to answer your questions. jwdharrell@gmail.com
I have worked for Xerox for several years and repaired many copiers from the small desktop copier to the big copy machines. Here is a brief history of Xerox. A patent attorney in Astoria New York invented the copy technology called Xerography in 1938 named Chester Carlson he could not even give his invention away. It took Chester Carlson ten years before he got with a company in Rochester New York named The Haloid Company (they made photo paper). The Haloid Company changed their name to Xerox and in a very short time they became a big name. This is probably why a lot of people say I am going to Xerox my papers instead of saying I am going to copy my papers. Xerox was the first copy machine then all the other copy machine companies followed. I will be talking mainly about Xerox copiers since that is mainly what I have repaired, but most copy machines are the same. I have worked on a few other brands of copiers. You can save on down time, money and stress by doing basic copier repairs. I have seen and repaired many problems a lot of the problems took very little time. Some service calls took longer to get there than what it took to fix the problem. The main problems are error codes, paper jams, copy quality, the environment, down time, service calls
