You Really Need to Setup a Testing Environment for Your Self Hosted Wordpress Site

2013-11-17T02:38:00.001-05:00

The more online experience I get the more I realize the importance of really digging into Wordpress and knowing how to tinker with different settings. I'm also trying to learn the basics of HTML and CSS because there's a lot more I want to do with my sports blog and I don't have a clue.

It's actually quite frustrating at times when you want to do something, but a lack of knowledge prevents you from doing it, this happens to be one of those times! But there's no use in crying over spilled milk because that won't help and I'll just get more frustrated.

I've also come to realize that it's important to set up a testing environment to practice. I remember seeing other bloggers recommend doing it when I started out, but "screw that" I thought. I wasn't going to need to learn any of that coding crap and thought it would be a waste of my time because I already had too much other stuff to learn in order to get my site off the ground.

So I've finally decided to set one up and will chronicle my trials and tribulations on here for the world to see. Plus I can use this as a reference to revisit as I continue my blogging journey.

It's funny how life throws us all curveballs at some point during our time on earth
because I never dreamed I'd end up here in the online world. I've fallen in love with blogging, social media, and trying to build websites with Wordpress.

When I first started out I only wanted to get a site up where I could blog about sports and throw some ads up and earn some money in the process. Boy was I dumb back then, LOL! Don't get me wrong I still want to eventually earn some money, but I want to improve my knowledge and skills when it comes to knowing how to design and modify themes and page templates. I've got other sites I'd like to build in the future, but I want to know how everything works and fits together so I can do them myself.

So there's no way to do all that on my live site because I don't want to crash it, or worse. I know that's exactly the outcome if I start messing around under the hood.

I've went ahead and setup up a fresh installation on a subdomain to practice on. It's just another example of me not slowing down at the start and then coming to the realization that I should have done it a lot earlier.

I'm not in a position where I can afford to pay a real web designer to build the site so I've just got to do what I've done all along and push forward teaching myself. It's a challenge that I actually enjoy once I can see things coming together and different things start to click in my mind.

What's the Difference Between a Fixed or Fluid Wordpress Theme?

2013-11-03T00:45:00.000-04:00

When looking for a theme for your new Wordpress blog it can get a little overwhelming at first because of all the choices, but also some of the terminology used can be enough to make you want to pull your hair out!

You will see this theme touting a fluid width and then another with a fixed width. Some will have both for you to choose from and then you, will see other confusing words, but let's stick to the difference between a fixed or fluid layout for now.

Fixed - Each page will be a certain size measured in pixels and could have display issues when viewed through different size browsers.

Fluid - Allows for the site to expand or retract according to whatever browser size it's being viewed on. It's measured in percentages. Now you will also see different words like Liquid, Responsive, Elastic, and I was told they are pretty much the same thing.

It had my head spinning because I knew nothing, but I've hung around long enough and spent countless hours researching all the different aspects of building a successful site. My knowledge of how things work has greatly increased, but my technical skills in putting it all together is lagging behind.

The biggest thing to worry about is making sure your site is viewable no matter how a person reaches it in my opinion. So I think going with a fluid layout offers a better chance at achieving that goal.

Are You Looking to Spice Up Your Wordpress Blog?

2013-10-29T18:37:00.000-04:00

Here's a great video that I came across on Wordpress TV that goes into detail about several different plugins that you can use to spice up your blog's appearance.

The video is kind of long, but it's packed with a ton of useful information and presented in a very easy to understand way. I've been watching it in little three to five minute increments and taking little side notes to help retain the information. The speaker does a good job of explaining what and why each plugin can be useful.

If you're serious about learning how to improve your site this video will be well worth the time you invest into watching it. The Wordpress platform has evolved so much from when I started out on my blogging journey a few years ago and it's gotten much more user friendly as well.

A Simple Way to Add Google News Feeds Into Your Wordpress Pages or Posts

2013-10-02T02:05:00.000-04:00

If you are looking for a simple way to add Google News feeds into your Wordpress blog's pages or posts then you should check out this new plugin I came across in the Wordpress Plugin Repository earlier today. It allows you to do it with a shortcode and I found it easy to use on my sports blog.

I know there's many different ways to add external feeds to Wordpress and some allow you to have all kinds of different options when it comes to displaying them, but they can be very difficult to setup for new bloggers. They have so many options that it can actually be overwhelming and discouraging for someone just starting out. Trust me I know from personal experience!

Now I'll get back on track about using this plugin. Don't let the word shortcode scare you because they are not hard to use if you can copy and paste. The maker of the Simple Google News plugin has very easy instructions on how to use it.

You can display the searches by topic or even use a phrase if you'd like. You can also set the number of items that will be displayed and how much content the individual snippets will show. I like it and here's a link to the page I created on my sports blog with this plugin handling the feed.

Update: The plugin has been updated since I made this post and you can now display feeds in a widget on the sidebar of your blog if you want.

The Power Of Social Media Should Not Be Ignored

2013-09-07T20:03:00.000-04:00

Social Media is here to stay and you need to embrace it and get on board now! It does not matter if you are a fortune 500 company or someone that's just getting their first blog online, get on board the social media train.

You don't have to start spending money on exotic advertising campaigns in order for social media to work for you. Don't make the same mistake I did by waiting so long to join the party. Here's a great video on the growth and power of using social media that I came across on Social Media Examiner. I'd like to hear your thoughts or questions about the power of social media.

You can generate new blog traffic and gain a boatload of potential customers through using social media. Whatever your online goals may be, getting active in the social media world will help you get there faster and you can do it without spending a dime.

It's not as simple as just getting on Twitter and Facebook and then posting an occasional status update. You need to get active and engage other people in whatever your niche may be. You don't need to spend every waking hour on Twitter or Facebook, but don't just start throwing up affiliate links and trying to sell stuff right away because you will be disappointed with the results.

People will tune you out if that's all you're doing. I'm not saying don't ever tweet out an affiliate link, but just don't make that your sole purpose on whatever platform your using.

I can't believe how much social media has taken over our society in the last five years and can't even imagine what the next five years will bring.

I'd also recommend you to get on Pinterest and also make a Google Page for your blog or website because I've gotten great interaction on both platforms in the short time I've been on them.

How Search Works Straight From Google's Mouth

2013-09-03T19:53:00.000-04:00

This is a quick video by Matt Cutts from Google giving you a quick explanation of how search engines work. He also provides you with some search engine optimization techniques you can use right away that will help your blog get more traffic.

It's a good video for a new blogger that is just starting out and trying to learn how search engines work. When I started out SEO seemed like a foreign language and I thought I'd never grasp it, but it's not really as hard to understand as it first appears.

If you already know how search engines work and understand the basics then don't waste your time watching this video. But if you're a new blogger and have some questions then I'd recommend watching this quick video.

Here's a link to Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide that's another great resource to learn from.

Google Adsense Is Still Confusing and Frustrating

2013-09-02T15:20:00.000-04:00

Why doesn't Google make the Adsense platform more user friendly? I've been struggling with learning it off and on for a few years, but I always end up pissed off and frustrated. Then I'll take a break and say that I'm done with trying to figure things out because it's way to time consuming for me to learn while I'm trying to continue building my sports site and creating content for it. But then I always seem to somehow find myself trying to figure out how to use Adsense after my cooling off period is over.

It's become a vicious cycle of mental torture that I can't escape. Now I know how Bill Murray felt in the movie Groundhog Day, help!!

I'm not writing this to badmouth Google, I'm actually a fan of Google and use several of their services, but Adsense continues to be a struggle. I know that part of the problem is with me, but I still think they could make the user interface and help sections more user friendly as well as easier to understand.

I really want to use Adsense and don't mind dedicating some time to learning it. I'm also aware that things are always changing and you may need to spend some time learning new features as they become available.

One thing I'm going to do if I ever learn the ropes is to make an easy to understand tutorial for people like me to use from the sign up point right on through.

I've actually created ads and served them on my site, but there's a lot I'm not grasping and it's just so frustrating to feel like I'm wasting so much time on something I may never figure out.

Facebook Page SEO Tips

2013-06-29T14:56:00.000-04:00

I came across a good video while researching ways to improve the Facebook Page for my sports blog. The video has some good tips that will improve your page's visibility in search engines. I knew that Facebook Pages were turning up in search results, but I wasn't really aware of the fact that you could help to improve your page's performance.

If you have seven minutes to spare and would like to improve the traffic and engagement of your page then this is well worth your time.

Still Kicking Around The Blogosphere After Five Years and Loving Every Minute Of It!

2013-06-29T14:33:00.000-04:00

I can't believe it's been almost five years since I got the itch to start a sports blog! Time has seemed to fly right on by. My journey has been filled with many ups and downs, but my love and desire for blogging has only grown stronger.

I started this blog as a way to chronicle my trials and tribulations and to connect with other like minded bloggers. I haven't kept up with this site as much as I intended too at the outset, but will be doing so from here on out.

A lot of things have changed over these last five years to make it easier than ever for "newbie" bloggers to get themselves up online and to get their message out into the Blogosphere without spending a dime. I was scared to death when I first started out and knew absolutely nothing about the online world. I couldn't do much more than surf the web and send someone an email, that's the truth.

When I was introduced to blogging a light bulb went off and I knew right away that I had to do one, no matter what. I've spent many, many hours learning and have come a long way. I've made many, many mistakes along the way as well, but I just keep plugging along and learning. There's been a ton of frustration and at times I've felt like quitting, but I can't. I love the challenges and enjoy learning all the different aspects to building a successful blog.

One of my biggest mistakes when I first started out was to avoid joining social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. I had no clue how powerful of an ally than can be. I was scared to join because I wasn't sure how to use them and thought they'd somehow end up being a detriment to building traffic for my sports blog. Now I look back and realize how ignorant I was.

If you're reading this and thinking of starting your own blog I'd say to go ahead and jump into the social media frenzy now, you will thank me later, I promise. Just dive right in and start interacting with people.

Really Starting To Dig Into Wordpress

2012-01-18T22:30:00.000-05:00

I'm a huge fan of Wordpress.org and that's what I started out using for my sports blog, I like everything you can do with it if you know how. My site doesn't look that bad, but I'm not happy and want to add some different elements for my readers, but I don't know exactly how.

I'm scared because I don't want to screw my site up or something even worse like making it crash. So I've decided to really get into learning how to customize things because using to many plugins can also cause site problems.

I understand the basics of making the site look presentable, but I want to dig even deeper so that I can really make it more appealing and interactive as well. My goal is to build a community for sports fan's and I'd really like to have additional site writers as well, but not sure how to make it all happen.

I've always been scared to let people sign up for fear of making a mistake on configuring it. Here's a small list of the things I'm looking to do with my sports blog:

Every Blogger Should Check Out What Empire Avenue Has To Offer

2011-09-21T18:25:00.000-04:00

If you're serious about building an audience for your blog and getting people to see it, check out Empire Avenue. I just recently found the site and signed up about a month ago and it's been great to me so far. It's like a social networking stock market where people are the commodity being bought and sold.

It's a really neat concept that actually measures a person's online worth through how they interact with others in their online activities. It's free to sign up, but I must warn you, it's quite addicting. There's a lot of benefits to getting yourself signed up and start doing some networking, trust me it will help you to make connections with some well known people in different niches. I've seen my traffic rise on my sports blog site and on all my social media platforms as well.

Some people approach it as a game and I'm fine with that, but I'm in it for the long haul. I'd love to hear what your thoughts are after you go and check it out for yourself.

Google Gives Blogger A Nice Makeover

2011-09-11T06:02:00.000-04:00

The new makeover Google has given to Blogger is great from what I've been able to see so far. I give Google big props for how much the Blogger platform has improved since I started my journey into the Blogosphere a couple of years ago.

When I first started you had very limited choices for your template and there wasn't any stats available for you unless you knew how to add Google Anaylytics manually. That was way beyond my capabilities when I first started using the blogger platform.

I've always been a big fan of Google because they're always looking to improve on their products and 90 percent of them are free to use!

The Power Of Facebook And Why You Should Use It For Your Blog

2011-06-19T19:09:00.001-04:00

We all know that Facebook is huge, but I didn't realize how huge until coming across MarketingTechBlog.com and seeing their post and slideshow on Facebook. I'm now convinced more than ever that I must learn more about how to use Facebook so that my sites may get the maximum benefit. I wish they would make the platform more user friendly because I struggled to learn the basics and almost gave up on the network, but they have made some improvements since I started.

I will post the slideshow on here for you to see and will link to the article that goes with it in case you'd like to read it. What are your thoughts on Facebook?

Tips For Using Sponsored Tweets

2011-05-22T00:10:00.000-04:00

I'm a big fan of Twitter and use it all the time and I also really like the Sponsored Tweets program to earn a few bucks from my Tweets. I have no problem with someone who is trying to monetize their blogs or social networking profiles as long as they are being straight up and legit with their intentions. I'm an affiliate of the Sponsored Tweets program and want to let you know up front before we go any further.

I'm not an expert or a guru to making money online, but I'm slowly figuring some things out. I will post some tips for you on how I use the Sponsored Tweets program and hope they can be of some value to you. If you are reading this and have some tips of your own and would like to share them then please let me know and you can do a guest post or send me the tips and I will add them on here for everyone to see.

The Sponsored Tweets program is free to sign up for and you retain total control of your Twitter account and private information. They do offer a pro account that is a small monthly fee, but you don't have to use it to get offers and I'm proof of that because I'm still using the free account that I signed up with. I've been thinking of signing up for their pro account lately, but as of this moment I'm not.

You can decline an offer and don't have to explain yourself. I use them and have turned down offers and I still get offers, but I want to make that point clear for you. Don't ever let yourself feel pressured into doing a tweet because you are in control and it's your credibility on the front lines. I've rambled enough now onto my tips.

Be honest and don't try and game the system because it will get caught and you will lose your credibility and an easy way to generate some revenue for yourself.
Always and I mean always check what it is that you will be tweeting out to your followers, no exceptions! Don't just accept an offer and write your tweet and then submit it on the spot without checking the link your followers will be clicking. It will take you to the page they will see and then you can decide what to do.
It's ok to decline an offer! I have turned down some and I still continue to receive offers.
Do try and make the tweet like the advertiser has requested. You may have to get creative and trim a word here or there in order to fit it into your tweet, but this doesn't happen that much.
Be reasonable with what you charge to do a tweet.

You Can Make Money With Your Twitter Account

2011-04-29T10:03:00.000-04:00

You can earn money with your Twitter account and I have had some success using Sponsored Tweets. Before I go on I want to let you know that I'm an affiliate of Sponsored Tweets and will earn a commission if you click through from my site and decide to sign up for their program. It is totally free and will cost you nothing, but I've had people ask me that question.

I'm no expert on making money online and have tried various ways to earn revenue through my blogging with varying degrees of success. I want to make sure of something before I recommend it to you because my online credibility is very important for me to maintain. I'd like for you to return and become a regular site reader and community member as well.

There are many different ways to earn money with your Twitter account and if you haven't already seen 100 different "systems" or "special reports", you will, but proceed with caution. There are to many scams and shysters out there who sound very convincing, but their motives are questionable at best.

Anyway, I've found the Sponsored Tweets program to be on the up and up. I've made a little money, but the most important thing is I've actually received money in my hand! You get offers from advertisers who will pay you to send out a regular tweet with their branded message to your followers just like a normal tweet.

You can pick and choose which offers you'd like to take and decline the ones you don't want to do without any explanation or cost to you. How much money you can make depends on a number of factors and I will list some of them below.

How much you charge to send out a tweet
How many followers you have
Who the target audience is
How your followers interact with your tweets

There are more factors with better explanations on their site, but that should give you some idea of how your earnings are determined. So how much have I made so far? I will display a snapshot below and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

I'm not saying you will make a million dollars, but you can earn some money with their program and you don't have to be worried because it's legitimate. Don't just take my word for it, go and check them out and decide whether or not if it's a program for you. No matter what you decide I'd appreciate your feedback on their program.

I Found A Great Wordpress Plugin To Help Improve Your Spelling And Punctuation

2011-04-05T20:08:00.000-04:00

One thing that I have tried to improve and work on is my writing and punctuation because it makes you look more credible and professional to your site readers. I admit that it had been years since I had to worry about what my writing looked like, but blogging has changed that for me. I still have aways to go, but I can see I've made a lot of progress since my start.

I look back at some of my early posts and cringe because I see how amateur they look to me now that I've been around the Blogosphere for a minute. Your appearance means everything in the real world and online as well. You want people to have a good first impression of you and your blog if you plan on growing your readership. People don't like to waste their time and you have about 10 seconds or so to convince them to stay on your site.

You also must have quality content and it all ties together. I found a really good plugin for Wordpress.org that helps you with spelling and punctuation errors before you publish a post. It will not only tell you what is wrong, but offers suggestions to fix whatever is wrong. I love it so far and it has helped me to continue to improve! The plugin is named "After The Deadline" and you can get it by itself or as part of "Jetpack" which is a collection of plugins made by Wordpress.com and they are all free!

What Is The Deal With Website Stats?

2011-03-27T19:20:00.000-04:00

Your webstats are very important for you to understand if you ever want to monetize your blog or website by selling your ad space. I'm no expert on this topic and still trying to learn what is what and which stats are the most important for you to understand. I do know that page views and unique visitors are two that I keep seeing mentioned by other bloggers. Your stats will determine how much money you should charge potential advertisers who want to reach your audience.

What is the deal with Awstats and it's statistical reporting? Awstats is similar to Google Analytics, but has a lot less features in terms of reporting depth. It came with Cpanel because my other site is a self hosted Wordpress.org blog. My problem is that it shows my site as having 35,848 page views with 1,528 unique visitors so far in the month of March, but Google Analytics has far different numbers. GA is reporting 886 page views with 351 being unique visitors. So which service is accurate?

Month	Unique visitors	Number of visits	Pages	Hits	Bandwidth
Jan 2011	942	5620	19870	49815	587.67 MB
Feb 2011	1175	6207	23930	70885	867.68 MB
Mar 2011	1528	7013	35848	98569	959.78 MB

Google Analytics Listed Below

As you can see from the numbers above that something just isn't right!

I Found A Great Forum For Bloggers

2011-03-20T04:09:00.000-04:00

If you have been looking for a reputable website or forum to learn about blogging and making money with your blog, you need to check Website Babble. It's free to join and any online topic relating to blogging is covered and I recommend you check it out because it's packed with solid straight forward information. It also has a lot of active members from what I can see and that is a good sign if you have questions and need help.

I want to add a forum to this site and have been experimenting and researching some different options and the forum at Website Babble is exactly in the style that I have wanted. I have signed up for it and I posted a question and had 2 responses within a few hours of posting it.

The Power Of Google Alerts

2011-03-11T19:34:00.000-05:00

I'm just now realizing the power and potential of using Google Alerts and I have to say I'm impressed by how helpful this will be for me! I had seen other bloggers mentioning Google Alerts and how they loved the service, but I have so much going on that I never paid a lot of attention to what all the fuss was about and like usual I'm kicking myself for not checking it out sooner.

What it does is to allow you to enter different search terms and get notified whenever there is an update relating to your terms. You can get alerts on pretty much anything you can think of and it's really easy to get it setup and working for you. I'm getting mine setup for my different blogs and the different niches that are important for me to keep up with.

It can be setup to alert just once a day or however you would like to set it up. It will be a huge time saver for me and I'm excited because that will allow me to increase my productivity which is a good thing! I hope this will be helpful for you as well.

New Bloggers Need To Be Active In The Blogosphere

2011-03-07T23:45:00.000-05:00

You need to work really hard in the beginning as a new blogger if you want to build a successful blog. I'm talking about more than just getting your site up and posting some articles because that happens everyday with new blogs popping up like a bag of Jiffy Pop Popcorn. You need to get out into the blogosphere and start interacting with other bloggers by leaving comments on posts. Don't just leave the standard "good post" comment because that doesn't really help you in any way. You need to leave good comments that can add value to the post you have just read and it's ok to disagree with someone as long as it's done in a professional tone.

I have learned that commenting can help you to build your credibility online and also generate new traffic to your site. Plus it can help add to your PageRank in the search engines which is what everyone likes. I really didn't buy into the commenting theory when I first started blogging because I was thinking that it would be time better spent working on my site and improving my online skills, but that is warped thinking now that I look back on it. I'm not telling you that you need to leave a novel sized comment on every post that you read on another site, but you want to start getting your name and blog out there for people to start seeing it.

Commenting is just another tool for you to use in building your blog and it really does have value for you. I don't ever leave a comment or link to someones post or their blog and expect anything from them in return. I do it because it is of value to my site readers and it would be nice if I get links and comments in return, but I don't sweat it because thats not my style.

The Dog Days Of Blogging

2011-02-24T17:04:00.000-05:00

I'm going to borrow a baseball analogy and apply it to blogging because I think it's perfect to describe those times when you get frustrated with blogging. It can and does happen to all bloggers in the beginning when you first start out and you look around and see all these "Bull$hit Guru's" telling you how much money they are making and how fast they make it. You see all of this and then start questioning yourself and that leads to self doubt and frustration. Thats not the only way for a blogger to get frustrated, but I'm using it as my example here to make a point.

The important thing is not to give up and quit, if you want it bad enough you must dig in and continue moving forward. There is no get rich quick secret to making money online and you must understand that going into to blogging. You can make money online and there are several people who are completely legit that have, but they are up front and honest about the steps you need to take in order to achieve whatever it is that you are after. Don't keep wasting your time or money on these miracle "breakthrough discoveries" that will fatten your wallet overnight. All that crap is just a waste of your time and helps to keep the "Bull$hit Guru's" in business!

I will be honest and let you know that I've felt like quitting a few times and at some point you will as well, but don't do it. I've never been a quitter and besides I really love blogging and all that goes with it. A lot of things have really started to make sense to me as each day goes by. It's almost like putting a puzzle together in my mind and I've heard other bloggers say the same thing. Blogging can feel quite lonely at times and you may feel like your getting nowhere, but as long as you keep posting and trying to learn, you may not see it, but you are making progress. The bottom line is that even though you may get knocked down, you must get up and continue the journey.

Working On Adding A New Bloggers Forum To The Site

2011-02-21T08:25:00.000-05:00

I'm working on adding a new bloggers forum here on Basics 2 Blogging for anyone to use and I hope to build a community where new bloggers can come together and help each other. We all learn at different paces and somebody may pick up on something you are having trouble with and vice versa. I welcome any thoughts or suggestions you may have about how the forum will be run and would love to hear them. The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

I'm going to be using Google Moderator for the forum and if that doesn't work out I will go another route, but I really think it will be perfect for this site. I hope to have it up and running in the next day or so and will do a post letting everyone know when it's ready.

Social Networking Sites Can Be A Very Powerful Tool For New Bloggers

2011-02-16T10:18:00.000-05:00

Social networking sites can be a very powerful tool for anyone and especially new bloggers who are just starting out, I admit that it took me a little while to grasp this concept when I first started. Don't make my mistake and get yourself out there if you haven't already started, you will thank me later, I promise! I waited like 6 or 7 months before I signed up with Twitter and then another 2 months until I joined Facebook. Now looking back on it I realize my mistake in not getting into the game sooner.

I didn't see the reason why I should sign up because I thought it was a big waste of my time and I was not about to drive traffic to Twitter or a Facebook when I needed traffic for my sports blog! What an idiotic way to think now that I look back on it, but you live and you learn or at least your supposed too. Don't worry if you don't know anyone on either site because you will be able to find like minded people who share your likes and in some cases, dislikes. The key is to get into the game, because you can't win if you aren't playing.

One of the coolest aspects is that you can set them up to be updated automatically whenever you post to your blog! It will post a link in a tweet on Twitter that links back to your blog and with Facebook you have the option to post a link or the whole post. These sites can not only help to drive traffic to your blog, but help you earn money as well or even land you a job. I wouldn't worry about trying to make any money on them until you have built up some credibility.

I'm a huge advocate for using social networking sites because there is a lot of benefits for you if done correctly. You don't need to spend all your time on these sites because you still have a blog your trying to get off the ground. It's very easy to lose track of time and to get sidetracked which is a huge problem for lots of bloggers because I see other people saying the same exact thing. It was something I struggled with after I got into it and realized that I had made a mistake and should have arrived at the dance a little earlier.
