PBR STREETGANG:
Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe were christened PBR STREETGANG after a long trip to Ibiza. Ibiza is a second home to the lads as residents for world re-nowned party We Love… at Space. The pair earned great respect across the musical spectrum with fans such as Crazy P, Greg Wilson, The Unabombers, Clive Henry and Ralph Lawson. Their unique musical approach, never failing to connect with the crowd, threading Larry’s New York legacy to the Jacking underground beats of their Leeds roots.

PBR Streetgang have released productions on labels such as Hot Creations, 2020 Vision, Red Music, Futureboogie, E.A.R, ISM and Wolf Music.

COSMIC BOOGIE:
Cosmic Boogie is the pseudonym of Liverpool based DJ and producer Stu Robinson, and the name of one of the record labels he currently runs (the other being Boogie Originals with Andy Ash).

Bushwacka & Richie Fingers are starting a new night in London called Roots at Basing House, Kingsland Road, Shoreditch on Thursday March 8th. They’re starting this night to highlight the roots of house & techno music as a lot of the music coming out now, apart from production quality, is exactly like what was coming out in the 80′s, it’s come full circle. As they say, it all comes back around.

As I was one of the instigators of the house & Techno scene in London in the 80′s, they asked me to spin at the opening party & also do a mix for their Roots London page on facebook. Here’s the link to that page: http://www.facebook.com/therootslondon

I’ve also been promising myself to start a new retro series as many of the new generation of clubbers don’t know all of the really cool old shit & of course deserve to hear it & love it just as we old timers have, so doing this mix for Bushwacka & Richie Fingers has given me a kick in the arse to start this series. This mix is 1986-1989 house music, mostly from Chicago. I will also be doing other mixes showcasing old school NYC garage, acid house, deep house, Detroit techno, hip hop, breaks & old school electro in this series & not just one mix of each of those genres, but many.

So here is the first of the series, Retro 1, Which was lovingly mixed using 100% vinyl with no post production or edits whatsoever so that you get the full flavour of the way it was in the 80′s.
Let the history lessons begin.

1. Take It To The House by Jine on Supertronics
2. Donnie by The It on DJ International
3. Taste My Love by Kim Mazalle on Police
4. It’s You by E.S.P on Underground
5. The Morning After by Fallout on Forth Floor
6. Music Takes You Away by Lil Louis on Dance Mania
7. I’m Strong by Robert Owens on Alleviated
8. I Swing My Body by Project 122 on Playground
9. Jail bait by Ben Mays on Sunset
10. Can’t Get Enough by Liz Torrez on State Street
11. More Than Just A Dance by Risque Rhythm Team on Chicago Connection
12. Strip by Nouveax Nation on SRO
13. In A Vision by Virgo Four on Trax
14. Destiny by Vortex on DJ Tool
15. Fix It Man by Ragtime on Bright Star
16. Shake Your Body by Jeanette Thomas on Chicago Connection
17. Love Me Right by Conception on SRO
18. Don’t Lead My by House Master Baldwin ft Paris Grey on Future Sound

House Of Disco caught up with Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe, AKA PBR Streetgang, for a quick chat before their gig here on the 2nd March.

So, the name PBR Streetgang; big Apocalypse Now fans or simply plucked from obscurity?

Tom: Is that what it is, really? Bonar said we we’re named after a beer. Wait till I get my hands on him!

How did you guys meet and decide that you could produce together?

Bonar: We met about 10 years ago now in Birmingham; we had some mutual friends and would hang out in the same record store and were into the same music. We started djing together a couple of years after that, the production thing came about a few years after that. It was all a very natural progression really.

Every successful music partnership is about balance, however friendship aside, what makes yours ‘tick’?

Bonar: Er, good question! I think it’s that we just have a both have an inner desire or need to create and that’s were it all stems from. I don’t think it’s really about making ‘this’ or ‘that’ kind of thing, it’s just about making something that were into, however it ends up sounding.

Of course with all this success comes unavoidable fame – do you both genuinely enjoy the attention?

Bonar: Hahahahahaha!! I think you must have us confused with somebody else. My own mother can’t remember my name half the time!

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?

Tom: At the age of 18 I once worked in a packaging factory. My role was unpacking video tapes from boxes and putting them on to a conveyor belt for 12 hours a day (night shift), seven days a week – I lasted two weeks!

If you weren’t making music constantly what do you think you’d both be doing with your lives?

Tom: Dolphin Trainers in Honolulu.

Your new track ‘Downstroke’ is currently riding high in the charts. Did the label (Hot Creations) encourage the low slung vibe, which represents your Leeds and Ibiza residencies, or was this always the aim of your next project?

Bonar: Kind of the latter really. We never really intended it to come out on Hot Creations. When we finished the track we sent it to two or three mates for their opinion on it, as it was a little bit different to what we’d done before and Jamie got back almost straight away and said he’d like to take it – we were pretty surprised to be honest.

You’ve shared dj booths with some illustrious company, including Theo Parish, Henrik Schwarz and Kerri Chandler, however who was the last dj that blew you away?

Tom: I caught Nicholas Jaar do his live/band thing recently, which was very cool. I always love checking out Maurice Fulton, he blows me away every time! I also really buzz off listening to my friends or people i know when checking out dj’s. As there is a connection/history there with that person, I find you can understand more about them and their musical mind through their sets (pretty deep!!).

Your Garden Festival debut was back in 2009, and after seeing the line up for this year, were you as impressed as the rest of us?

Tom: I think it was before that? This is our fifth year in a row (I think). The Garden Festival is absolutely ace, magical really. It’s a pleasure to be involved. The organisers and team involved are all a great bunch. It really does feel like there are doing it for all the right reasons. I’m not surprised the line up is so good, but yes, I’m equally as impressed.

Social media is now a fundamental vehicle for promoting music and artists. Do these platforms come naturally to you?

Bonar: Well neither of us are computer nerds, if that’s what you mean! I’m not really into the whole thing of people posting ‘Look at the sandwich I had for lunch’ and inane self-absorbed stuff like that, but on the other hand it’s a great new channel of self-expression for some people, and that can only be a good thing.

We presume that your 2012 calendar is set to be rather exciting, possibly defining, so is your own label on the horizon?

Bonar: Who knows, we’re just concentrating on making good music right now. I do think that it would be good have our own imprint, but I also know from working at 2020Vision for the last six years that to run a really good stand out label it’s pretty much a full-time job. So if I do it’s not something I’d take on lightly.

What do you find the difference is to playing to a crowd in Ibiza and a crowd in Leeds, apart from the weather, sound systems and other obvious bits?

Tom: I’m pretty sure there is a mass migration from Leeds to Ibiza in the summer! You see all the same faces in the clubs in Ibiza as in Leeds. It’s been great over the years playing at WeLove, as there is always a strong faithful of local support in front of the dj booth. You really notice (and I mean hear them) when they’re in the room with you.

What are your aspirations for the next year?

Bonar: Wrestle a bear?

Everything you hear now. This is where it came from. …

While purging his 25,000 strong 25 vinyl collection last year Matthew B, aka Bushwacka! came across so many hidden gems and special records that he decided to team up with fellow long time DJ Richie Fingers and start a night dedicated to bringing these amazing tunes to the music lovers of the here and now.

It is roughly 25 years since the birth of Acid House and this night is very much centered on music from 1987-1990 which hugely influences everything we are listening to at the moment. In fact so much so that one could argue that production quality aside, we are all dancing to the same beat again.

This is the original house sound. The new monthly Thursday night vinyl based house music party featuring special guests each month, The launch party on March 8th features the legendary Mr.C, largely responsible for the underground sound in this country and worldwide, still going strong 25 years later!

The spontaneity of a DJ is something we have grown to love, and it is those who are most impulsive behind the decks that produce the best sets I’m sure you have ever witnessed. To take this a stage further is to put two DJ’s of this ilk in the booth, let them connect with the crowd and with each other. Not knowing what your DJ counterpart may play next and where they might take the set not only keeps the crowd engaged, but also each other on their toes. It is for this reason deep’art are a duo and thinking behind our next installment.

For our third party we have two special guests. First up we have the brothers that everyone are talking about, the excellent Krankbrothers. In a very short space of time these guys are becoming well know for their sets, parties and most recently their booking agency.

Then to cap the evening off we have put together two very talented DJ’s and producers. Corey Baker, one third of WiLDKATS, and Rebel, co-founder of Save The Pony. This a very rare and unique back-to-back offering that is sure to please the deep’art faithful.

Essentially this is a night which is going to showcase new, etablished and fresh DJ partnerships.

We are also back at what we like to call our home…Basing House, Dalston. Host to a number of parties this year, Basing House continues to receive industry recognition for what it was set out to do and that is showcase cutting edge electronic music.

Now for some more info on to the sound track for the evening…

Corey Baker B2B Rebel
(WiLDKATS /Hot Creations / Lower East / Digital Delight)

http://soundcloud.com/jonnyrebel

http://soundcloud.com/djcoreybaker/

Now known for his East London production trio Wildkats, Corey is currently on the verge of something big. With recent signings to Jamie Jones’ and Lee Foss’s Hot Creations label as Wildkats, to his collaboration with Richy Ahmed, remixing Black Strobe’s Italian Fireflies coming out on the French powerhouse electro label Kitsune, the future looks bright for the up and coming producer.

Unlike many weird and wonderful names in music, this one couldn’t be more descriptive if it led a revolution. Never one for conforming, following or holding back, Jonny ‘Rebel’ Lawrence is here to leave Mr. Rulebook quaking in his boots! Rebel is soon to release his Grass Roots Ep on the fantastic Digital Delight, and has forthcoming EPs on Lower East, Hourglass and Electronquie.

Krankbrothers
(Krankbrother Agency)

http://soundcloud.com/krankbrother

Danny Clancy and Kieran Clancy are the founders, organisers and resident DJs at krankbrother, which is considered one of the best parties in London right now. Although they are both DJs within their own rights, the true sound of their parties comes when they are playing straight back to back as krankbrothers – with Kieran’s love of harder basslines and crunching snares offset by Dan’s penchant for vocals, synths and funk. Their sound has shaped their parties, and the parties have shaped their sound with particular influence being drawn from the many acts they’ve been lucky enough to play alongside such as DJ T, Lee Foss, Pan-Pot, Dyed Soundorom, Ivan Smagghe and Nic Fancuilli.

So where did the name Dachshund come from??

When I released my first track, the label manager said to me: ok, we will send the track now, what’s your artist name? I was like.. Gosh! I don’t have a moniker for this project, so I looked into a “Pentone Color” Book. Every color had a certain name, then I wrote 5 of them down and chose between them. Dachshund sounded good to my ears even if I didn’t know the meaning. Then I checked on the web and realized that it was a dog name, but not any one, the sausage one! I hesitated one second but then decided to go for it!

The funny thing is that only English and German speakers are able to pronounce it correctly.

Did you grow up knowing you wanted to be an Artist/DJ??

Not really. I had no idea… I started to work as an independent tailor when I was 19. But besides this I was playing guitar in reggae bands and I took some courses of “electro-acoustic music” at the conservatory. It gave me the possibility to use their studio. I was spending hours there experimenting on sound design, working on samplers, analogue modular, etc.. the passion started here. After that I played as DJ and started my own productions.

What’s the worse job you’ve ever had??

Cleaning dishes in the cafeteria of a famous watch factory. The job itself is not hard but having hands in the water all day can cause some troubles, especially when you cut yourself with the knives and the dishes like I did.

Tell us a bit what 2012 has instore for you??

For the moment I’m working on an album and I also have a few remixes on the desk. I’m also planning to be more concentrated on Clapper, the label we’re running with Quenum. After the next EP, we will release a remix compilation with friends or producers that we like. We keep the names secret for the moment but we’re very excited about this project.

I will also move my studio in a few months to another place, but that’s another story..

So when your not busy in the studio or on the road gigging, what do you get up to??

I’ve got a part time job in a music store and the rest of my time I like swimming in “Le Rhône” the river that crosses the city where I live, Geneva. I also like going for a walk in the nature, seeing friends, windsurfing, playing “Jass” (a swiss card game), eating great meals, cooking, relaxing, discovering new places, but I don’t get enough time to do all these things.

What’s been your biggest achievement to date??

It’s probably the fact to play outside of Switzerland. I think I’m lucky. Many good DJs don’t have this chance. I’ll be always thankful for that. Allelujah!

Name your style??

Dance-music for dogs

With just a few days to go until the 2012 A Night With… series opens its doors onto another set of 8 hour masterclass journeys we caught up with the often elusive mobilee house supreme Sebo K who’ll be launching twenty twelve on Saturday…

Hi Sebo,

Looking forward to you launching the 2012 A Night With season this week. You’re Mobilee’s longest serving artist. Tell us what makes the label so special?

The special thing for me is that it is a family thing. We are all friends. It’s always great when we all come together. Anja and me have even been friends before the label started. Also the label is not limited to only one specific sound. Every artist has his own sound that he follows. I’m more the housey guy and for example Pan Pot are more the techno guys.

Highlights from your years with mobilee and the parties?

The mobilee rooftop parties at Sonar in Barcelona are definitely standing out. We do this since 2007 and they were always amazing! But of course there were lots of other great parties that we had together as well…

Anja’s already laid down her A Night With… mandate already in 2010. What can we expect from your marathon journey?

Actually I like to play long sets. I just played an 8 hour set a few months ago at Panorama Bar and i loved it. It’s great because you have the time to tell a story.

You’ve made the mobilee rooftop parties a must go to @ Sonar. What is it that makes Barcelona and that week in June so special?

It’s so much fun because you meet almost everybody from the scene and you have the chance to party together in a beautiful city at the sea with nice weather.

What does the K stand for?

One journalist once wrote an article with the headline “germany’s special k”. that was funny but of course in reality the k stands for something else. It’s simply for my last name. please don’t mix anything up here ; )

Could you pick us a track to reflect each hour of your 8 hour A Night With…?

Honestly, I don’t have a masterplan yet of what to play in which hour. Usually i go with the flow and see what works next. But of course i’ll definitely spend a day this week to check some records in my shelf and prepare a special selection for this party.

Tell us about your experience of this thing we call London?

I love the city. When I was younger it was my dream to live in London one day and I can still imagine it, although i’m pretty happy in Berlin at the moment.

I have played pretty often in London in the last years and I have to say most of the time i really had a lot of fun. The crowds are pretty educated and know about the music. I’ve also always been a fan of music from London and the UK in general. There were so many groundbreaking new genres coming from the UK. i’ve always been following that.

How’s Berlin’s scene at the moment?

Every time I go there I’m enthused by its enduring energy and individuality.
It still feels like that. That’s why I’m still very happy to live in Berlin. But you can also feel the negative effects of the big Berlin hype already. Due to the huge demand of appartments the prices were recently rising extremely. Of course compared to london the rents are still very low but you can really see the development that happens at the moment. the gentrification process is in full progress. But this is something that propably happens to every big city at one point. It’s kind of a miracle that it took so long in Berlin. I mean it’s a capitol ..

Atari Teenage Riot are having renewed success – some would argue more than they ever did previously. You were an integral member of Alec Empire’s Bass Terror. Do you ever consider revisiting more of your more bass/broken led past as the lines between the techno and house in the current scene blur ever further with the emerging bass scene?

I’m really interested in a lot different syles of music and I really like a lot of the bass sound but there are no concrete plans to focus more on producing or DJing in that direction at the moment but you never know what happens in the future…

Your output is not as prolific as others on mobilee but when they drop they’re lauded across the scene. Is this a conscious decision to not just ‘churn records out’ and concentrate on quality?

One thing is that I don’t spend so much time in the studio. I wouldn’t say that I’m a producer in first place. I also need to spend my time with other things. In the past years I was studying and also since I finished it I’m working on different other projects besides djing and producing.

The other thing is that when I’m working in the studio I’m extremely critical and hardly satisfied. That’s why it always takes ages and millions of sketches untill i finish something.

How do you approach production in the modern age of home software studios?

At the moment I only work with software and samples. It’s very comfortable and also the sound of the plug ins is great these days. of course there is still a difference if you use analog equipment. especially the unplaned mistakes that an anaologue machine creates are very charming. But the comfort aspect is more important to me. i used to share a studio with a friend who had some analogue gear but in the end I never used it.

Tell us about the year ahead for Sebo K. What have we got to look forward to?

I’m currently working on some new music. At the moment I’m working on a few remixes and after i finished them I want to start working on some new material by myself.
besides that I’m working on a book project with a friend.

The record you’d have played at your funeral – not to sound too morbid or anything!
Sorry i have no idea.

Honestly there are too many to mention. It’s hard to limit yourself to just a few.
