After spending several days hunkered down in Austin at the Westlake Holiday Classic, I returned to the Alamo City where most of the city's talent resides in the Northside & Northeast Districts. (Antonian & Central Catholic also have a say in things too :-)

Hendrickson 47 Bryan 38

Hendrickson traveled to Bryan this past week to compete in the Mc Donald's All American Invitational. Hendrickson is 14-11 on the season and went 4-1 in the tournament.

Plugerville Hendrickson Lady Hawks

Hendrickson was lead by 2011 W 5'11 Kathryn Tolbert. Tolbert can burn you in so many ways. With her size and ability to handle the ball she can make it a long night for anyone defending her. A couple of weeks ago she was a nightmare for Elgin. Kathryn dropped 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds and Elgin had no answer for her. Tolbert has excellent range on her shot with the

ability to take you off the bounce.

Kathryn is an unsigned senior with loads of next level potential. Her academics is in check and she would definitely be an asset at the next level.

This week I had a chance to travel down to San Antonio to catch a few key match ups in District 26 5A.

San Antonio MacArthur45 San Antonio Johnson37

This seem to be a runaway early on as MacArthur came out executing very well and took a 12 point lead into the half.

(L) 2011 G Marrisa Cantu of MacArthur lead the way with 12. Marrisa is a smooth PG with a great skill set. Cantu showed excellent ball handling with a true understanding of how to lead her team. Cantu has nice range on her shot and continued to attack the basket every chance she got.

(R) 2014 G Re'cee Caldwell of Johnson seem to struggle early on and finished with 15. Caldwell is a high quality player with excellent skills. Caldwell has superior ball handling, passing, and shooting skills. One of things I like most about Caldwell is her ability to get teammates involved and her aggressive play at the basket.

San Antonio Regan 52 San Antonio Churchill 43

Regan did an excellent job defensively to fight off the Lady Chargers.

2013 W Sabrina Berry of Regan is very explosive. Berry has a nice touch on her shot with the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket. Berry has adequate size with great athleticism. Sabrina is definitely a next level player and will continue to do great things in the future. Sabrina pictured below with the Texas D-1 Ambassadors Austine Elite group.

2013 G 5'10 Carly Truesdale of Churchill is a high quality player that competes on a very high level. With her size and ability to handle the basketball she becomes a tough match up for most defenders. Carly has excellent ball handling, passing, and shooting skills with great moves to take you off the bounce. Truesdale shows great maturity with her ball handling and outstanding court vision. One of the things I like most about Carly is the way she moves without the ball, and her ability to come off screens to shoot. Truesdale is academically sound with great skills and will be a major prospect in the class of 2013.

Austin Westlake Holiday Classic-Championship Day

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Thu, 30 Dec 2010 03:44:00 +0000

5th Place Austin Westlake 45 El Paso Montwood 41 (OT)
After a lackluster game against Coppell on Tuesday evening a different Westlake team came to play today. Maybe they're not quite ready for prime time but to play a quality team like Montwood to OT and grab the W is a sign of growth for Coach Tre Ellis' young charges. R.J. Rowan cemented his all tournament status with a 15 point, 7 rebound performance. Not too bad for a 5'9" guard to give glass work like that.

Montwood was led by their All Tournament selection Gabriel Licon with 17 points and Robert Lopez who chipped in with 16 of his own.

3rd Place Duncanville 48 A&M Consolidated 41
This was a very good game. Lots of intensity, and the chance to see two superior players in A&M Consolidated's 2012 PG 6'5" Alex Caruso and Duncanville's 2011 P 6'7" Luke Mergerson. The game was back and forth down to the wire. Behind by one, A&M Consolidated was forced to foul and Duncanville converted their free throw attempts to win by 7.

A little too much Luke Mergerson down low (16 points & 8 rebounds) was the difference in the victory. 2011 Devane' Carter & 2011 Cedric Carter were great complimentary players all tournament long for the Panthers. For Consolidated Alex Caruso was The Truth as he filled up the stat sheet. He had 17 points, 6 rebounds & 5 steals.

Championship: Pflugerville 84 Coppell 79 (OT)

Both squads came out of the gate firing it up. Deep 3's by Pflugerville's Mitchell & Coppell's Austin Mankin had each team shooting about 70% for the quarter. Coppell leads after one, 21-18. The 2nd quarter saw a combination of more intense D as well as "so so" shot selection by both teams. Pflugerville got their advantage at the free throw line. At the half, Pflugerville is up 39-30 as Darrian Dempsey hit an NBA triple at the half.

Aided by an 11-2 run to start the 3rd, Coppell kept battling and has cut the lead to six, P'ville up 51-45. 2012 F Jett Raines has really asserted himself for the Cowboys. He's scoring and boarding HARD. With the score 60-58 P'ville has gone into an uncharacteristic stall and the clock is ticking down to 2:45....P'ville goes, and Mitchell swishes a three from deep! But everytime P'ville strikes a body blow, someone answers back for Coppell.. 66-64 with 1:04 left. With 16 seconds left, Raines hits an And 1 to tie it and we go to OT 71-71!

After P'ville jumped out 77-71, Coppell has scratched back to 77-76 with 1:27 left in OT. The last minute was Deon Mitchell's as he showed why he's arguably Texas' top guard in 2011. The Northern Iowa signee split three men in full court pressure three different times like a hot knife through butter and then finished by dishing to Shabazz for a dunk. Final score Pflugerville 84 Coppell 79.

Deon Mitchell was the unanimous MVP selection from us voters as he had 24 points. Jamal Shabazz had 13 points & 6 rebounds. Coppell goes deep into their bench so it's not easy for anyone to put up huge numbers but I became a big Jett Raines fan as the 2012 W had 24 points and 12 rebounds. Andrew Rexroat added 15 for the Cowboys.

2011 G Deon Mitchell (Northern Iowa) was the MVP. He collects his hardware from former Texas Longhorn Drew Gressett who was a tournament sponsor through his Hat Creek Burger Company

Central Catholic Continues To Build For District

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Wed, 29 Dec 2010 17:27:00 +0000

San Antonio Central Catholic competed in the Boerne Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. The event was pool play only, with no clear cut winner declared as the various pools didn't play bracket play vs the others. The CCHS folks were good enough to update me on how they did.

San Antonio Central Catholic 59 New Braunfels Canyon 57

Seniors Cole Martinez (22) & Alec Senioris (16) led the Buttons.

San Marcos 77 San Antonio Central Catholic 62

revenge is sweet, as San marcos returned the favor from the pre Christmas Harlandale Tournament where CCHS beat them going away. 2012 W Allex Austin had 22 for the Rattlers and 2012 G Collin Hart added 17, while Cole Martinez led all scorers with 38.

2011 Cole Martinez (left) is the best pure shooter left unsigned in the San Antonio area, while 2012 Allex Austin (right) continues to put together impressive performances for San Marcos.

CCHS 71 Spring 57

Central went on a 20-0 run after falling behind early & once again Martinez rang up big points in the win (25).

CCHS 62 Seguin 59
Martinez scored 18 in the win and Seguin's 2011 P Brig Gehrlich, the coach's son led all scorers with 20.

Austin Westlake Holiday Tournament-Tuesday

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Wed, 29 Dec 2010 01:04:00 +0000

Coppell 54 A&M Consolidated 39

Coppell goes 12 men deep and they all know their roles. Scoring was balanced with nobody in double figures. 2012 G Alex Caruso had 14 in the loss.

Duncanville 53 El Paso Montwood 46

This is a great matchup between a larger, more athletic team in Duncanville and a fundamentally sound Montwood team whose sum is greater than the individual parts. To this point in the tournament Duncanville's three point shooting has been limited to Jeremy Atkins. On the other side of the fence, not only does Montwood constantly cut and run their offense with precision but it's their readiness to RECEIVE the ball when making those cuts that makes them dangerous.

A 4 point half time lead for D'ville has evaporated as Luke Mergerson picked up a tech late in the 3rd. With him out of the game Montwood upped their lead to 7 points. This one was nip and tuck down the stretch as the lead changed hands several times, the last when Senior guard Jeremy Atkins hit his most important three pointer of the game. He finished with 14 points. Big Man, Luke Mergerson had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Nobody could hold him.

Seniors Robert Lopez and Gabriel licon had 12 each for the Montwood Rams. Missed free throws down the stretch killed them and allowed Duncanville to get out and run to end the game.

A&M Consolidated 49 El Paso Socorro 32

After a lackluster effort earlier this morning against a good quality Coppell team, A&M cam out stronger in the afternoon tilt (albeit vs a weak Socorro squad) Not too many times you see a donut in a quarter of a high school game but after one, it's Consolidated up 12-0. A&M subbed regularly, going deep into their bench as the coasted to the W. 2012 G Alex Caruso continues to impress as he dropped 22 points, 5 rebounds & 5 steals.

2012 G Alex Caruso

Coppell 77 Austin Westlake 38

This is my second time watching Coppell and other than looking at the roster names/numbers the kids are interchangeable. Nobody puts up big stats but at the end of the day there's been a butt whuppin'..and Coppell's the one giving it. After 1 quarter, Coppell leads 13-4.

Coppell wins this one going away as the Cowboys brought their six shooters & Westlake was firing blanks in a terrible shooting game. Coppell is dangerous. They can make shots, they fly around the ball, they rebound well & because they have no real "go to guy" they will be tough to scheme against in district and playoff contests.

Senior Tom Fisher worked hard for the Chaps as he had 9 points, & 2012 G R.J. Rowan had 13 .

Pflugerville 72 Duncanville 50

Both are Panthers, "The Battle of The Villes"..and to top it off a couple of key P'ville guys were late for the bus (Mitchell & Dempsey) so they won't start today's game. With youngster 2013 T.J. Williams distributing the ball for the first 6 minutes, P'ville jumped to a 16-7 lead, upping it to 20-11 after one. The half time score is Pflugerville 36 Duncanville 24. Senior Jordan Major had his best half of the year as he deflected, stole, rebounded and scored the ball for P'ville.

2011 W Cameron Blue

For the most part, both teams exchanged buckets in the quarter and P'ville leads after 3, 55-41. D'ville has no answer for the superior quickness and multiple perimeter shooting threat the P'ville guards and wings pose. Deon Mitchell has really asserted himself after sitting the 1st quarter. Who'd a thunk it, that the State's #10 ranked team in 5A would take a solid trouncing from #12 ranked Pflugerville to the point where P'ville was emptying their bech with 3 minutes to play. Impressive wins P'ville has notched include quality wins over "tempo control" programs Austin Bowie, Converse Judson & El Paso Montwood and now over athletic DFW powerhouse, Duncanville.

Deon Mitchell had 15 points & 5 assists while 2011 W Cameron Blue also added 15 in the win. Cameron Lenzy had 9 for D'ville and Mergerson had 7 & 6 boards.

El Paso Montwood 45 ston Westbury 28
Seniors Robert Lopez (left) & Gabriel Licon (right) are two integral parts of this year's version of Montwood. Licon is one of the better perimeter shooters in the tournament while Lopez always knows where the soft spot is in the high post defense.

At the half, it's Montwood leading 19-10. Gabriel Licon has 13 of their points and grabbed 5 boards. Not too shabby for a 5'10" guard. Montwood won this one going away in methodical fashion. Licon finished with 25 to lead all scorers while Robert Lopez had 13. Props go to Senior Ricardo Nova who does a lot of the dirty work. He's not going to fill the stat sheet but he does a little bit of everything it takes for the team to win.

I was speaking with the Montwood staff prior to the game this evening. What a nice group of guys. It didn't take but a minute to see how much pride they took in the defensive intensity and precision which their Montwood teams operate at, year in and year out. Coach Tony Harper has 800 plus wins, which is pretty impressive.

One of the most interesting tidbits I acquired in the conversation is that Coach Harper played for The Bear, the legendary Don Haskins. He was there at UTEP (known as Texas Western at the time) during that 1966 season which was immoratlized in the movie Glory Road. Apparently, Coach Harper was also a pitcher on the baseball team so after playing 20 basketball games that season he left the basketball team before their historic run head to his field of dreams.

Kerrville Tivy Tournament

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Tue, 28 Dec 2010 21:06:00 +0000

Kerrville Tivy 81 Bandera 36
The Tivy Antlers came out of the holiday break with fresh legs as they demoralized the Bandera Bulldogs in early action play 81-36. Freshman Matt Perry came down the floor on the first possession after Tivy won the opening tip and hit a trey. The Bulldogs would not score until 56 sec were left in the first quarter. It was 24-1 Tivy after one and 40-8 at half. 12 players for the Antlers scored and Perry led the Antlers with 14.

Kerrville Tivy 61 San Angelo Central 53
At noon the Antlers took the court again against San Angelo Central. Freshman "Mattie Ice" Perry started the game out again with two 3s early. The Antlers led 26-20 at the half. After an ugly 3rd quarter in a physical game, senior Deron Belford(Texas State)took over to rally the Tivy troops in the 4th. Perry was high scorer with 24 (6 threes) and Deron Belford had 19.
2011 G Jake Kocher (left) is up to his old scoring antics as he dropped 35, 12, 31 & 27 in four games at the Tivy Invitational. Meanwhile super frosh Matt Perry (right) has posted another season best as he had 24 points v San Angelo Central.

Del valle is in the Houston area representing Central Texas. Del Valle Coach Brad Alexander reports back that the Cardinals are living dangerously. Every game is a nail biter.

Del Valle 48, Langham Creek 47
The Cardinals were down by 12 and hit the winning shot with 3 seconds left to play. Karim York (Santa Clara) led with 16 points.

Austin Westlake Holiday Classic-Monday

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Tue, 28 Dec 2010 03:58:00 +0000

First blood at the Westlake Holiday Classic has been spilled. A&M Consolidated came into Westlake and beat the home team, 64-58. Westlake trailed for most of the game, taking their first lead 39-38 near the end of the 3rd quarter. The Chaps clawed back in in after being down by 10. They took advantage of 2012 PG Alex Caruso's foul trouble. Consolidated is a different team with him out of the game. It was nip and tuck the remainder of the game until a questionable tech swung the final momentum the Tigers way.

2012 PG 6'5" Alex Caruso of A&M Consolidated, shown below with the Texas D1 Ambassadors

Caruso is indeed establishing himself as the real deal. At 6'5" he has superior court vision. His improvement since the summer has been dramatic and you can really see that the game has slowed down for him. He led the way with 20 points, 5 assists, 4 steals & 5 rebounds. He's climbing up the charts from mid major to a serious candidate for high major looks this coming summer season. 2013 P 6'5" Jimmie Gilbert had 5 points & snagged 12 rebounds in the win. Senior KeeKee Williams hit some timely shots and finished with 14.

Austin Westlake was led by 2013 PG Will Morse with 19 points. He also did nice job of taking care of the ball. 2012 P 6'6" Drew Wikelius had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Missed free throws down the stretch really hurt Westlake's chances. 2012 G R.J. Rowan added 15 for the Chaps.

Coppell 65 El Paso Socorro 38
This one was a runaway as Senior D.J. Feitl led a balanced Socorro attack with 12 points. Senior Enrique Jimenez had 13 for a game, but overmatched El Paso Socorr squad.

Pflugerville El Paso Montwood

It's easy to see why Montwood rules El Paso basketball on a regular basis and is always a threat to go deep into the State playoffs. They're well coached by Tony Harper and the players understand their roles. However, there is no 6'7" Roman Martinez (New Mexico) this time around so they are undersized. It all came down to not being able to handle Pflugerville's guards (but then again not many teams can).

Deon Mitchell (Northern Iowa) had a smooth 20 while also grabbing 5 boards & 5 steals. 2011 Jamaal Shabazz had 15 points & 5 boards, while 2011 Darrian Dempsey also added 11 for The Ville. Montwood consistently scored from the free throw line as Senior Robert Lopez dropped 25 to lead all scorers. The majority of them came from the same spot on the floor, off the same cuts. Senior Gabriel Lincon had the hot hand early for Montwood from the perimeter as he scored 16 before Pflugerville started to deny him the ball.
Deon Mitchell, seen below signing with Northern Iowa, was cashing the checks for Pflugerville as he went to work today as he dropped 20 on El Paso Montwood.

Duncanville 75 Westbury 40

Duncanville began to dominate halfway through the first quarter and as it progressed the game became a track meet. With 2011 P Luke Mergerson controlling the boards (6 points & 12 rebounds) and 2011 W 6'7" Devane Carter finishing on the break (3 dunks in a 40 second span) on his way to 15 points, they were too much for Westbury.

Duncanville's 2011 Luke Mergerson (left) and 2011 Davene Carter (right) were too much for Houston Westbury to handle.

Austin Westlake 60 El Paso Socorro 38

Westlake played an uninspired first half with their best play being a half court 3 pointer by Will Morse to end the 1st quarter. After trailing 18-13 at the half, Coach Eliis must have gotten in their ears pretty well as Westlake came out with guns blazing and scored 30 in the 3rd period to take command 43-25. The entire Chaps roster contributed something to the effort.

2012 G R.J. Rowan had an inspired 2nd half as he scored 17 points, 2013 G Vince Deblasio added 8 points and fellow soph Will morse had 8 points and 6 assists. For Socorro, Seniors Kyle Brito had 11 and Enrique Jimenez added 10.

Pflugerville 71 Houston Westbury 51

This one was never in doubt from the opening whistle. At the half, with Pflugerville subbing liberally they go to the locker room with a 36-17 lead. Pflugerville rested the majority of it's starters from the midpoint of the 3rd. Deon Mitchell led with 16 points, getting to the goal whenever he wanted. Cameron Blue & Jamal Shabazz both had 6 boards.

2012 G Chris Hynes dropped 16 for Westbury. Their best player was 2013 F Donivan Jones who had 16 points & 7 boards.

NBA Fantasy 2010 – 11 Player Review: Carmelo Anthony

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Mon, 27 Dec 2010 04:11:00 +0000

Rumors have been going on all over the NBA that Carmelo Anthony will be traded because he didn’t sign his contract extension. Will this affect his NBA fantasy contribution, you will find out in this player review. His performance in the fantasy league will be affected depending on the NBA team he will be traded to. If he will be traded in a team that has another superstar, his performance in the fantasy league might be affected a bit. But there is a positive effect and that would be an increase in his assists. But in general, the trade will not affect that much.

In the past few games he did not play because of the death of her sister. But this will make a good effect since he is well rested physically hopefully he will be 100% emotionally. In this NBA fantasy player review, you will see how explosive Carmelo Anthony can be. In the 2010 – 11 season, he increased his average in rebounds. He is also not a bad defensive player so he is also a complete package just like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. He is one of the elite players that can contribute to a fantasy team every game.

If you are looking for a fantasy player that can score, rebound, dish assists and plays a good defensive role he is the right player for your roster. Carmelo Anthony is more on a role playing type of player so he can contribute in your fantasy statistics in any field. Some NBA fantasy player review might say that he is a superstar. That is true, but if you look on how he plays in the court he is more than a superstar. He may not have those high average points but when look at his other statistics you can say that he is what you need.

There's a New Kid In Town (Same Old Family)

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Mon, 27 Dec 2010 04:02:00 +0000

The name Perry is synonymous with Kerrville Tivy basketball. Papa Rick Perry moved his clan to the Hill Country 28 years ago. Who'd a thunk it that his eldest son, Keith who started his sophomore his sophomore year would begin a string of 11 straight years with a Perry starting on the hardwood. This opens up a joke that Rick, a tennis player at Oklahoma State (aka Cowboy High) may well have taken 11 years HIMSELF to get through school, but luckily he married above his pay grade and the kids got Mrs. Perry's smarts...lol

Keith started three years for the Antlers & went on to play college basketball at Schreiner and Howard Payne University. As soon as Keith graduated. middle son Jonathan became a 4 year starter and a two time All Region Player who also captured All State recognition this past year. Tim Floyd had just taken the Head Coaching job at University of Texas-El Paso and after watching Jonathan in Las Vegas & Phoenix with the Texas D1 Ambassadors offered him a scholarship this past July.

With an off day between Vegas & Phoenix, Rick, Jonathan (r) & Coach Max (left) hit the golf course. There is no official record who won that day, only vicious rumors...lol

The Perry's are unique folks in this day and age of "me me me" and "now now now". A few weeks before Jonathan had committed to do a prep school year at Fork Union Prep in Virginia. Believing God has a plan for his son, the Perry's stuck with that original plan and Jonathan (no surprise) is prospering in that environment which is causing his recruitment to heat up.

After a heck of a run to last year's regional semifinal, and graduating most of his impact players Kerrville Coach Brian Young could understandably expect a let down with this year's team. He did have 2011 G Deron Belford (Texas State) coming back to run the point, but he had almost no other experienced players in the mix.

2014 WG 6'1" Matt Perry, shown below at Max Ivany's All American Prodigy Camp: March 2010

BUT, hold up a minute. For the 8th straight year there's a Perry in the Tivy starting lineup. This time it's freshman Matt Perry, a 6'1" wing guard.

Speaking with Pops Rick tonight, he told me that Matt got his opportunity early in the season when several Tivy players were benched for disciplinary reasons prior to the Marble Falls Tournament. The younger Perry saw the floor and after initially feeling like a deer in the headlights, Matt seized the opportunity and let his basketball instincts take over. He scored 16 points vs. powerhouse Killeen High, Perry followed that up with 20 vs Austin Travis, 13 vs Cedar Park Vandergriff, 12 vs Converse Wagner & 9 vs Liberty Hill. He's currently second on the team in scoring averaging 12ppg on the year.

His dad credited Matt's time with the Texas D1 Ambassadors in preparing him for the basketball opportunity. I appreciate his support. However the Perrys are fortunate to be coached by a fundamental, hardnosed guy in Coach Brian Young. He's an intense teacher who I respect very much. Matt Perry will have an opportunity to build on that legacy tomorrow as he laces them up in the Kerrville Tivy Classic.

1st Annual Westlake Holiday Classic Preview

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Sat, 25 Dec 2010 21:11:00 +0000

Good Afternoon & Merry Christmas to all. I hope everyone's enjoying their day, good health and good food. I just sat down and loosened my belt after a nice turkey and lobster dinner. On Monday, I'll be heading up Interstate 35 from San Antonio to Austin. I'll be spending December 27-29th in the State Capital evaluating some great high school hoops talent in action. The Inaugural Westlake Holiday Hoops Classic Tournament promises to deliver the basketball goods. It's Santa's gift to Austin, TX. The brainchild of Austin Westlake Head Coach Tres Ellis, Craig Carlton & John Rowan it's their intent to build this into one of the most outstanding holiday tournaments in the country. I've pledged my assistance.

I was delighted to accommodate them when they asked Texas Basketball Inc. & The D1 Nation to provide media coverage. It's a great beginning although there's a slight disappointment when both Fort Bend Bush ( #7 in Texas 5A & Houston Yates (#4 in Texas 4A) dropped out to take all expense paid trips out of state. However, there's more than enough talent & tradition to make this inaugural event an exciting one. And with the teams and high level players in attendance, how could I refuse? Let's handicap the field and introduce you to some of the key players/prospects in the event.

Austin Westlake

2012 P 6'6" Drew Wikelius has nice footwork with his back to the goal. One of the few traditional back to the basket players in the area. Always good for 10 plus rebounds per game.

2012 G R.J. Rowan has a smooth stroke and the confidence to pull it at any time. Rowan is neck and neck with sophomore Will Morse as the team's leading scorer. Rowna's's also beginning to go to the basket more often as he gains confidence in his new role this season.

2013 PG Will Morse is quickly becoming a seasoned veteran. Likes to get his team mates involved but if you leave him alone he'll bury the shot on you. Has two games of 30 plus points in the past few contests.

2013 PG Will Morse

2011 P 6'5" Tom Fisher is a burr in your saddle. Never spectacular, but always solid Fisher comes to get his nose bloody and brings the young Chaps squad a degree of toughness.

A&M Consolidated
Like Westlake, this team is a year away from being REALLY good as most of their leadership consists of underclassmen.

2013 P 6'5" Jimmie Gilbert goes to the boards with abandon and always plays with lots of energy. His Pops, Big Jimmie was All Southwest Conference for the Texas A&M Aggies back in the day. If Gilbert grows a little more he'll be a mid major plus guy.

2013 P Jimmie Gilbert

2012 G Alex Caruso is the straw that stirs the Consolidated drink. Capable of playing the one, two or three. He can shoot it, get to the hole, has great court vision and is a crafty passer. Did I mention that Caruso has major hops too? Definitely on the radar of mid majors and high majors in the Big XII. Pops Mike (now Associate AD at Texas A&M) was a PG himself back in the day as he ran the Creighton Bluejays squads under the great Eddie Sutton.

2012 G Alex Caruso

Coppell

2012 F 6'6" Jett Raines is athletic, rebounds well and is capable of hitting the midrange jumper if he's not guarded closely.

2014 Simi Socks. I don't know a darn thing yet about this kid, but as a frosh on varsity if this isn't the best name in the tournament ("Simi Socks") then I can't wait to see the other contenders.

Duncanville (10-3) # 10 Ranked in Texas 5A
The Dallas area powerhouse is not as strong as in years past but they come to play every time out and they'll have guys hungry to carry on that winning tradition.

2011 P 6'7" Luke Mergerson has an offer from Southern Methodist University and is being courted by a host of others including Notre Dame, Georgia Tech & Colorado. A well built, hard nosed competitor who hits the boards hard, finishes around the goal and can hit the face up shot.

El Paso Montwood (11-2) #23 Ranked in Texas 5A

Coach Tony Harper's teams are as well coached as anybody's in the State of Texas. They like to control tempo, keep the possessions to a minimum, get the best look available and go home with a 40-39 win.

2012 P 6'9" Joey Martinez is a long presence as he patrols the interior defense for Montwood.

Pflugerville (10-4) #12 Ranked in Texas 5A

Former district foes to the host Westlake squad, Coach Mike Murphy's Panthers bring another high octane offensive crew to the gym.

2011 G Deon Mitchell (Northern Iowa) is tough. He can do it all on the offensive end and scores at will.

2011 PG Deon Mitchell

2011 W Cameron Blue can hit from the perimieter, but he's most valuable to The Ville when he's grabbing rebounds and altering/blocking shots inside.

2013 G T.J. Williams, the heir apparent to Mitchell gives great depth and leadership off the bench.

El Paso Socorro

I have not seen Socorro play so I'll reserve judgment until then. They do have a hefty Senior in 6'7" Alonso Langarrica.

Houston Westbury
Watch out for Junior G Chris Hynes

The tournament begins at NOON on Monday, December 27th at Austin Westlake High School. This is a must see event for all high school hoops fans.-Coach Max Ivany

D1 Nation Alumni Report

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Fri, 24 Dec 2010 07:17:00 +0000

With high school basketball taking a short Holiday reprieve for the Christmas Break, it's a perfect time to visit with some of the Texas D1 Ambassadors who are currently playing at the D1 level. Four alumni of the D1 Nation had very nice nights tonight on the college front.

In only 10 minutes of action, sophomore D.J. Stephens of Harker Heights/Memphis Tigers had 6 points and 2 rebounds. In a National game vs Georgetown , Memphis suffered their first home loss of the season. However, if you've watched ESPN SportsCenter tonight they've show D.J.'s dunk over and over. In fact, it was the play of the night. Be sure to catch it early tomorrow, as he threw down a nasty baseline effort on the noggin' of an unsupsecting Georgetown player. After recording his first double-double a couple of weeks back Stephens was diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his pelvis which required him to miss several games.

Junior A.J. Hardeman (below left) of Del Valle/New Mexico led the Lobos with 16 points and 7 rebounds in a tough loss to Northern Iowa. True freshman, Cody Doolin of Austin Westlake/San Francisco is averaging 34 minutes a game running the point for the Dons. Tonight they lost on a last second shot. Doolin poured in 12 points and 4 assists.

True freshman, Andre Roberson of Converse Wagner/Colorado has got to be one of the most efficient freshmen in the NCAA. As the 6th/7th man off the bench for the Buffaloes, In 14 minutes, Roberson had 8 points. He also leads Colorado in rebounding, averaging 7.6 rebounds per game while only playing 19 minute pg.

Congratulations to all these kids and their families. This is the legacy of the Texas D1 Ambassadors program.

Akins 63 Kerrville Tivy 27

Akins is really clicking on all cylinders right now. With the leadership of Winston & Lofton, Akins looks to be a solid force in District 15A.

(L) 2011 F Danielle Lofton of Akins notched 23. Danielle has really stepped up her game. Lofton is averaging 18.9 per game with a huge game last week at Seguin where she went for 29.

(R) 2011 G Vanessa Winston of Akins does an excellent job at running the point. Winston dropped 14 while contributing a number of key assist. Vanessa averages right at 15 per game on the season.

Connally 62 Elgin 25

Pflugerville Connally should do good things in District 16 4A. They are 12-8 on the season and Babola is giving them good consistent play.

(L) 2013 G Kara of Connally added 13 in the win against Manor. Kara is a nice Pg with a smooth game. The true sophomore has good size with great shooting ability.

(R) 2012 F Autum Shead of Connally notched 12. Wells has a nice frame and stands at 5'10. Wells is a nice force in the middle for Connally. She can clog it up and make you alter shots when attacking the basket.

Hutto 58 Hendrickson 50
Hutto is small but very scrappy. They pulled off a big win this week against district rival Hendrickson.

(L) 2011 G Haylea Jackson of Hutto is having a great season. Haylea dropped 14 in the big district match up against Hendrickson. This had to be a great time for Jackson as she went up against her longtime friend, and summer teammate Kathryn Tolbert. Haylea is small in size but packs a heavy punch. Haylea has excellent defense and loves to attack the basket.

(R) 2011 W Kathryn Tolbert of Hendrickson gave you 20. Tolbert can burn you in so many ways. With her size and ability to handle the ball she can make it a long night for anyone defending her.

(C) 2014 F 6'1 Ti' Aira Pitts of Hendrickson is quickly coming on the radar. Pitts has adequate size with a nice skill set. The young freshman has been a contributing factor for the lady hawks this season and will continue to do great things. Coaches you should definitely keep your eyes on this one. As she continues to develop and grow she will be a great prospect in the class of 2014.

NBA Basketball Fantasy Strategy: Key Players

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Thu, 23 Dec 2010 03:31:00 +0000

If you cannot win in the different categories in a fantasy game you cannot win at all. Here is an NBA basketball fantasy strategy that you should try. This type of strategy is called the rotation of key players. It is not everyday that your key players will contribute in your weekly statistics so it is important that you can formulate a good rotation for your key players. You are allowed to have 13 players in your fantasy roster so you should obtain at least 7 to 8 key players so that you can have enough key players to contribute every game day.

You don’t need to obtain such players as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Dwyane Wade. But just in case you have one of these players, it is up to you if you will keep them or trade them with 2 key players. But if you want to keep you superstar, it is also possible as long as you make sure to find other key players in the free agent. In an NBA basketball fantasy strategy you should make sure that your strategy would be gaining under rated players that can really contribute a lot in any statistics. Here are some NBA players that would be really effective in a fantasy league and could become a key player.

BASED ON THEIR STATISTICS IN THE 2010 – 2011 SEASON (Oct. 27 – Dec. 23)

Point Guard:

Daniel Gibson (CLE) ----- 13.8 PPG | 3.5 RPG | 3.0 APG | 2.0 3PM

George Hill (SA) ------ 11.3 PPG | 2.5 RPG | 2.3 APG | 1.0 3PM

Jose Calderon (TOR) ----- 10.0 PPG | 2.4 RPG | 7.0 APG | 0.9 3PM

Shooting Guard:

Shanon Brown (LAL) ----- 10.3 PPG | 2.3 RPG | 1.2 APG | 1.5 3PM

Lou Williams (PHI) ----- 11.8 PPG | 1.6 RPG | 3.4 APG | 1.1 3PM

Mike Dunleavy (IND) ----- 12.2 PPG | 5.3 RPG | 2.1 APG | 1.7 3PM

Small Forward:

Mike Dunleavy (IND) ----- 12.2 PPG | 5.3 RPG | 2.1 APG | 1.7 3PM

C.J. Miles (UTA) ----- 12.3 PPG | 3.2 RPG | 1.8 APG | 1.4 3PM

James Jones (MIA) ----- 07.3 PPG | 2.5 RPG | 0.7 APG | 2.0 3PM

Power Forward:

DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) --- 11.8 PPG | 7.5 RPG | 1.3 APG

Matt Bonner (SA) ----- 07.0 PPG | 3.5 RPG | 0.9 APG | 1.9 3PM

In the Center position, just pick a player that would at least contribute 7 PPG, 6 RPG, 1 to 2 APG and at least 1 BPG. There are other players you can choose from in all the positions. Just make sure that they will have the same statistics as the players listed above.

This is one of the best strategies you can use in a fantasy league. There will be a lot of NBA basketball fantasy strategy but this will one of the most effective ones you can use. Another thing you should also remember is not to pick a player that is a substitute for a superstar. This will lessen his minutes especially during crunch time. The lesser the minutes, the less contribution a player can make. When it comes to consistency, the players listed above are consistent as superstars they only have a limited playing time that is why they are not as productive as superstars.

Reinier Strobos Commits To M.I.T.

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Thu, 23 Dec 2010 02:48:00 +0000

Time to take our hats off to another wonderful young man who will get to live out his dream of playing college basketball. Reinier Strobos of New Braunfels Canyon has committed to play for one of our nation's most prestigious universities, M.I.T. Located in Cambridge, MA. The school is renowned world wide for it's Science & Engineering programs. The Engineers play in the New England League, one of the most competitive D3 programs in the country.

Strobos, at 6'8" is athletic and skilled. Suiting up for the Texas D1 Ambassadors this past spring and summer he showed great early potential but then was saddled all late spring/summer long with nagging hamstring problems. He tried everything, from rest to rehab and even a visit to the "witch doctor" but nothing seemed to help. I got a chance to catch him in a high school game about a week ago and he looks healthy and played great. Looks like he's put on about 15 pounds of muscle, was going to the basket with a new confidence and is able to hit face up shots out to the three point arc.

Congratulations to the Strobos Family. Both of Reinier's parents hold doctorate degrees, so education is a family pursuit. M.I.T. is getting a great student, a very good basketball player and an even better person. It was a pleausre to coach him the few opportunities we had.-Coach Max Ivany

With Christmas just around the corner, some districts are now entering their in house games. This is where the rubber meets the road and playoof spots (and seeding) will be on the line. Benches get shortened from non-district affairs and coaches have for the most part figured out their rotations and who their go to guys are. 27-5A, which is the Northside ISD is now in that mode.

San Antonio Brandeis 64 San Antonio O'Connor 55
2013 G Justtin Graham had 22 to lead Brandeis

San Antonio Taft 59 San Antonio Marshall 52
Taft had balanced scoring, including 12 from Deondre Logan to butt the Rams

San Antonio Clark 67 San Antonio Warren 59
20 points, 11 rebounds & 4 blocked shots by 2013 W Taurean Prince-Walller weren't enough to handle Clark's depth. Jacob Palacios led the way with 16 for the Cougars.

Non-District
San Antonio MacArthur 59 San Antonio Stevens 51
Mac's 2012 scoring duo of Pratt (19) and Gramling (16) had better support from their team mates than Strevens' dynamic 2012 duo of Marcus Roper (20) and Uche Ofoegbu (13) in the win.

San Antonio Central Catholic 67 San Antonio Brennan 60
2011 G Cole Martinez had 26 and 2011 backcourt mate Tommy Berry added 25 to lead CC. 2013 G Johnny Azzinaro led Brennan with 22.

Austin Lake Travis 86 Galveston Ball 72
I'm a little grumpy at myself for missing this one as it slipped past me that State ranked Galveston Ball was in town. Lake Travis, still riding high after an incredible 4 straight Texas 4A State Football Championships also got treated to some great basketball. Ball features 6'5" Terran Petteway (Texas Tech) and 6'7" Mike Evans who is also a mid major D1 prospect. Lake Travis held the two Ball stars to 9 & 8 points respectively. No easy feat as I've watched these two guys all summer long.

Lake Travis' 2011 W Billy Sherekas comes to play HARD every time out.

However, Lake Travis has an X Factor in 2011 W Billy Sherekas. After coming back to the United States a couple of years ago from Belgium, the 6'4" Sherekas plays with as much energy as anyone I've had the pleasure to watch/coach with the Texas D1 Ambassadors. He is a ferocious rebounder, and a streaky shooter. His shot must have been falling last night though as he dropped 36 on the visitors. G Matt Tyson also added 24 for the Cavs in the big win.
2013 stars Will Morse of Austin Westlake (left) & Leonard Allen of Round Rock are really beginning to assert themselves in their sop seasons on varsity.

Austin Westlake 73 Round Rock 71

In a nip and tuck game, Westlake found themselves down late until two three pointers from 2013 Will Morse in the last two minutes turned the tide. 2012 G R.J. Rowan led Westlake with 22 points and Morse had 17. 2013 P Leonard Allen led Round Rock with 18 points.

Pflugerville Hendrickson 75 Hutto 71

2011 W Jalen Washington dropped 24 in the win for Hendrickson

Bastrop 76 Manor 67

Now that football is behind us, Bastrop trots out one of the State's top senior backcourts in Jordan Roach (South Alabama) 26 & Josiah Monroe (Texas-San Antonio-football) 25. 2011 G LaDarrien Williams had 25 in the loss for Manor.
Josiah Monroe (lef) of Bastrop & L.D. Willaims of Manor (right) can score with the best of them.

San Antonio Madison 54 Austin Akins 53

Getting slight revenge for last year's playoff defeat, Madison held off an Akins surge for the W despite Yolonzo Moore's (Hartford) 23 points.

Austin St. Michael's 91 Hallettsville 70

Jake Kocher (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) had 44 in the win.

Pflugerville 76 Austin Bowie 61

noreply@blogger.com (ua bageur) — Tue, 21 Dec 2010 06:32:00 +0000

Tonight's matchup between Pflugerville (10-4) v Austin Bowie (12-1) should be a great high school game. It's really a mirror image of last week's Pflugerville-Judson matchup which I had the pleasure to watch as well. Coach Collier's Bowie Bulldogs are methodical and like to work the ball inside to Senior Connor Robinson while Pflugerville likes a faster pace.

Bowie controlled all aspects of play in the 1st quarter, taking a 12-5 lead. They got easy looks which originated in the high post, and were either dropped down low for layups or kicked to the wing/short corner for great looks. Pflugerville leader Deon Mitchell (Northern Iowa) was fighting a stomach virus and was no factor in the 1st half . In fact, up until just before game time he was considering not playing at all.
2013 G T.J. Williams (left) is giving Pflugerville great minutes off the bench. 2011 G Deon Mitchell (right) shows that Northern Iowa has signed a good one.

Bowie's control of the game slipped in a two minute period in the 2nd quarter when Cameron Blue's interior defense was the difference. Blue blocked 6 shots during the game and altered at least that many more to go with his 14 points and 8 rebounds. It was 21-20 Bowie at the half, and 36-34 in favor of Pflugerville after the 3rd. Then all heck broke loose.

Pflugerville turned up their defense a couple of notches and forced many turnovers inside. 40 points in a quarter of a high school game is especially rare against a quality, well coached team like Bowie. Mitchell came alive in the 2nd half and he ended up leading the Panthers with 21. In the end, P'ville had a few more weapons than Bowie. It was a big team win. Senior G Darrian Dempsey had 9 assists, W Jamal Shabazz had 13, and super soph T.J. Williams added 15 off the bench.

2012 G Paul Baxter of Bowie is the most explosive member of Austin's Junior Class.

Connor Robinson led Bowie with 20 points & 12 boards. 2012 G Marik Isom had 14 & 2012 G Paul Baxter had 8 points & 9assists, inclusing a thunderous break away dunk off a steal. These two teams could well meet again.

Harlandale Tournament (Championship Game)
San Antonio Central Catholic controlled this game from the tip and cruised to a 71-58 win over the San Marcos Rattlers. Perimeter shoting was the difference as the Buttons were their usual high percentage selves with Senior Tommy Berry hitting four from deep (17 points) & Senior Cole Martinez scoring 30. Martinez did it from deep, the midrange and the charity stripe. Both Texas D1 Ambassadors alums were also named to the All Tournament team.
2012 W Allex Austin (left) had an outstanding game in the loss, while 2011 G Cole Martinez (right) was "The Man" for Central Catholic leading them in scoring on a consistent basis.

San Marcos perimeter shooting was atrocious but the game was constantly within about ten points because they controlled the boards. Senior DJ Gardner had 10 points & 10 rebounds, but it was 2012 W Allex Austin who kept battling the entire game. He had 28 points and 14 rebounds, many of them on the offensive end. The lanky, bouncy son of Olympic High Jump Champion, Charles Austin really has a chance to make his own mark on the game of basketball if he improves his handles and mid range game. Leading scorer on the season, Collin Hart was held to 12 points in this contest.

San Antonio Clark 69 San Antonio Jay 39
The Cougars emptied their bench in this one with Seniors Jacob Palacios (16) & Kyle Rutledge 14 leading the way to the lopsided win.

This segment is dedicated to the D-1 Ambassadors Varsity girls who suited up with their school teams last night.

Marble Falls 56 Lake Travis 52

I had a chance to be in attendance for this match up between Marble Falls and Lake Travis. Marble Falls jumped out to an early double digit lead on the Cavs behind the play of Sophomore Kiara Etheridge. The lady Mustangs looked good as they executed very well over the course of the game.

2014 G 5'8 Sarah Stripling of Marble Falls played very well. The true freshman has excellent ball handling skills with nice range on her shot. She is ranked #15 in the State in scoring for the class of 2014. Sarah contributed 5 points in the win, but fouled out with lots of time left in the game. Stripling is truly developing her self into a nice prospect in the class of 2014. Sarah suited up with the D-1 Ambassadors Marble Falls group last summer and we look forward to having her return.

2013 F 6'0 Kiara Etheridge is a woman playing among girls. Etheridge notched 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win. She is also ranked #6 in the State by Max Preps in rebounds per game (12.6) for her class (2013). Kiara suits up with our D-1 Ambassadors Flagship team over the spring and summer months.

(L) Sarah Stripling (R) Kiara Etheridge

2011 G 5'5 Haylea Jackson of Hutto continues to do damage. Haylea is averaging right at 16 per game and gave Manor 22 last night. Jackson is a very quick combo guard with no fear at attacking the rim.She has a excellent skill set and definitely would do great things at the next level. Coaches here we have an unsigned senior who's ready to play. Haylea suits up with the D-1 Ambassadors Flagship Team. Hutto lost 72-67

2011 W 5'11 Kathryn Tolbert of Hendrickson was a nightmare for Elgin last night. Kathryn dropped 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in the win. Kathryn is getting several looks at this time, but still is an unsigned senior. If you are looking for a player to come in and work hard Kathryn is your player. With her size and ability to handle & shoot the ball she will definitely be an asset at the next level. Kathryn suits up with D-1 Ambassadors Flagship

(L) Haylea Jackson (R) Kathryn Tolbert

2011 G 5'5 Vanessa Winston of Akins High dished out 11 assist in the win against Seguin. Vanessa is a true Pg with a well rounded game. Winston can drop the dimes or put the ball in the hoop. She has excellent ball handles with a nice mid range shot. Vanessa defends very well and really understands the game. Vanessa will be an asset player at the next level. Vanessa suits up with our D-1 Ambassadors Flagship Team.

2011 F 5'10 Danielle Lofton of Akins High gave you 29 last night. Danielle has really improved her perimeter game and will burn you from deep. She has nice size with great footwork around the basket. Danielle is also a beast on the boards. Danielle suits up with the D-1 Ambassadors Austin Elite Group. Great asset player for the next level

(L) Vanessa Winston (R) Danielle Lofton pictured with D-1 Ambassadors Austin Elite

2011 G 5'8 Rebeekah Knudson of New Braunsfel had 20 points in the win against Sam Houston. Knudson is super quick with excellent defensive footwork. Knudson has great ball handling, passing, and shooting skills. Look for Rebeekah to do great things at the next level as her recruiting has really heated up in the past week. Rebeekah suits up with the D-1 Ambassadors Flagship Team

2011 W 5'10 Julie Direnzo of new Braunsfel notched 16 last night. Julie has tremendous leadership skills and it shows on the floor. Julie can get it done in all areas especially on the boards. Julie suits up with the D-1 Ambassadors Flagship Team.

2011 G 5'2 Heather Hewitt of New Braunsfel can get it done. Heather is a true Pg with excellent skills. Heather truly understands how to get a team into their sets. She continues to show great leadership and will burn you from the perimeter. Heather will definitely do good things at the next level.

(L-R) Heather Hewitt Julie Direnzo Rebeekah Knudson

2012 G 5'10 Tabatha Richardson-Smith of Seguin has truly elevated her game. tabby is averaging 15 points & 10 rebounds per game. Tabby has excellent ball handling with the ability to attack the rack. Tabby is ranked in the states top 40 in scoring & rebounds. She is quickly emerging as a top prospect in the area. Tabby suits up with the D-1 Ambassadors Flagship Team.

2012 W 5'9 10 Rachel Purl of Vista Ridge has adequate size with a nice frame. Rachel has excellent range on her shot and moves very well without the ball. Rachel suits up with the D-1 Ambassadors Austin Elite Group. Purl will also be a next level player with the potential to be a D-1 prospect in the class of 2012.

(L) Tabatha Richardson-Smith (R) Rachel Purl

(L) 2011 G 5'0 KaylinMonroe of Manor High is a Cat quick guard with automatic pull up. Small, but plays big with great intensity. Kaylin added 21 in the books last night.

(R) 2011 G 5'0 Kayrin Monroe of Manor High is a quick point guard with nice range from the perimeter. Kayrin added 8 in the loss to Hutto

Georgetown 48 Leander 43
A decisive 3rd quarter broke open this nail biter. 2012 G Michael Hardge had 16 for Georgetown while 2011 P Mark Nwakamma of Leander was tough inside as he had 12.
Pflugerville Hendrickson 86 Austin Westlake 81
After deciding at the last minute not to sign with D1 Mount St. Mary's, Jalen Washington (left) is on a mission in his senior season. He has scored over 40 several times already. Meanwhile, the PG parade continues at Austin Westlake as 2013 G Will Morse (right) has topped 30 points twice in the last week. He's got big shoes to fill in following Cody Doolin (averaging 35 minutes per game at San Francisco) but the fuzzy faced soph seems undeterred by it. he just plays his quiet, efficient game night in & night out.

The Senior backcourt at Hendrickson were led by Jalen Washington's 27 & Jalen Harris' 25, many of them from the free throw line. The young Westlake squad continues to mature as 2013 G Will Morse led the way with 30 points. This was Morse's second 30 point performance of the week.
Round Rock McNeil 63 Round Rock 60
Balanced scoring all around by both squads in this white knuckle contest. Senior Blair Williams had 12 in the win, while 2013 P 6'10" Leonard Allen had 10 in the loss.
Austin High 77 Bastrop 57
The Maroons are quietly positioning themselves as one of the area's top teams. Their Senior backcourt of Alex Reinking (20) & Eric McClellan (16) controlled the game.
Austin Waldorf 63 Brentwood Christian 57
Veteran Coach Rob Clifford has his best Waldorf team in memoory. They were led by 2011 G Santiago Paredes (19) & 2012 G Victor Garate (17).
2012 Victor Garate (left) is shooting the ball well for Austin Waldorf, while Del Valle's Karim York (Santa Clara) is back in the lineup after suffering a hairline fracture in his thumb.

Del Valle 56 Manor 49
Karim York (Santa Clara) came back from injury to post 12 in the win, while 2011 G LaDarrien Williams had 13 for Manor.
Austin Akins 77 San Antonio East Central 67
Akins blew opena 2 point game in the 4th quarter and coasted to the win. Malcolm Canada (22) and Yolonzo Moore (21) led Akins. East Central's 2012 P John Baker had 27 for the Hornets.
Burnet 67 San Saba 40

Pflugerville 66 Converse Judson 58

The Pflugerville Panthers came into the Lions Den tonight, making the 90 minute drive sown I-35 to take on Converse Judson. It's always a great game to watch as they are truly contrasting in their styles.

Let's start with the coaches who were old college team mates with the Texas Longhorns back in the day. In 10 years I've really only seen Pflugerville's Mike Murphy be anything but mild mannered more than a handful of times. The Gentle Giant let's his kids play a fast paced, uptempo style. Of course it doesn't hurt that year after year he has the athletes to go to the well with. On the other hand, Judson's Mike Wacker (who prior to tearing up his knee was a sure fire NBA lotto pick) is the picture of intensity. A super polite guy away from the gym, as soon as the whistle blows he hits the switch and he's as intense as they come. His kids will go through a wall for him and are some of the State's most disciplined, year in and year out.
Deon Mitchell, sporting his new Mohawk & tats, but an arrow through Judson's heart with 29 pts

Judson's talent may not be quite as high as in recent years, but that doesn't mean they can't get it done. Judson's tough anywhere but on their home court they're 5 points better. I watched them beat a talented San Antonio Churchill team by 20 points here recently, like they stole something. Their three catylysts are Senior's Cameron Griffin, Trent Matthews & the coach's son Karl Wacker. Pflugerville has it's usual collection of quality guards led by Senior's Deon Mitchell (Northern Iowa) &Darrian Dempsey. Soph sensation T.J. Williams also has an impact off the bench as the heir apparent to Mitchell. I also like P'ville's wing play with Seniors Cameron Blue & Jamal Shabazz.

The game started slowly and with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter, the score was tied at 3-3! Their was a lid on the basket at both ends of the court as both teasm were conservative and felt each other out. The quarter ended at 11-7 in favor of Judson. Judson's strategy was to double Mitchell most everytime he touche3d the ball and to make someone else beat them. The big difference between Pflugerville and Clark though was the quickness of their defensive rotations. When Judson reversed the ball, Pflugerville players used their athleticism to cause turnovers. I counted 12 steals by the Panthers, many of them leading to layups at the other end. Pflugerville grabbed the lead 30-23 at the half.
Judson's Cameron Griffin gave his regular top shelf performance with 14 points & 7 rebounds.

It never got closer than 6 points in the 2nd half. Even without Jamal Shabazz who only played a couple of minutes because of a fractured finger, the Panthers dominated the boards. Cameron Blue was The Truth as he had 16 points, 14 rebounds & 4 blocked shots. The strategy of doubling Deon Mitchell faded in it's effectiveness as the game wore on. The Northern Iowa signee ended up with 29 points & 5 rebounds. Mitchell went 11-13 from the free throw line in closing out the game as Judson kept valiantly fighting back.

Karl Wacker led Judosn with 16 points, most of them coming late in the game. Cameron Griffin 14 points & 7 boards for the Rockets while Trent Matthews had 11 points & 5 boards. These two teams can very likely meet again, probably in the 3rd round of the playoffs. It has been that way for years now.

NOTES: It was a pretty good day for Pflugerville's Mike Murphy as in addition his son, Lance Murphy ( a Texas D1 Ambassadors alum) was named the Player of the Week in the American Southwest Conference. Murph averaged 20 points & 7 rebounds in two conference wins. He went off for a career high 25 vs. Howard Payne.
