New Admin - New Era!

Dear Basketsim community,

With great happiness I welcomed the great news that Basketsim is yet again alive. One of the pretty important points now is to make Basketfox fully working again as well.

Since a few years ago I do not have the time to work on the Basketsim projects, I would however, be interested to spend some time with someone in order to keep the project alive :) and create a version that would be easier to be used.

I will first try to clean up a bit the code and add some comments, and also deal with the interruption of the game in order to calculate correctly which season/week we are in. Once this is done we will have a timeline about publishing the tool as a google play add-on.

If people are interested to set-up a repository and work collaboratively on fixing the code and maintaining the add-on please contact me.

New Tool: New Coach Contract Tool

Dear basketsim managers,

There is a new tool on bsgoodies: New Coach Contract Tool.

This tool helps you to find, when you renew the contract of your coach, what is the salary for which he will ask zero sign-on money. It is proved that in this case the coach for the following year (sign-on + salary*19) is minimum.

Moreover, if you press the "Plot total value" you will see a google plot showing the overall cast (sign-on value + salary*19) when varying the proposed salary on the x-axis.

Stats Categories

Hi all,

In this post I would like to say a few words about the different stats categories that are presented by the "enhanced player stats" feature available by Basketfox by BSGoodies.

The first picture shows the stats they way they are presented by the game. The next picture shows the stats enhanced by Basketfox. There is a clear one-to-one corresponding for most of the lines and in parenthesis the averages per 40 minutes are shown. Moreover there are some additional summarizing statistics.

2P: for two pointers we show first the percentage and then the average shots made over shots attempted, and then the total number of 2p shots made and attempted. Please note the difference between basketsim: we show shots made (and attempted), not points made.
FT: similarly for free throws.
3P: similarly for three pointers.
RPG = rebounds per game
DRPG = defensive rebounds per game
ORPG = offensive rebounds per game
BPG = blocks per game
APG = assists per game
SPG = steals per game
FPG = fouls per game
TPG = turnovers per game
Rating PG is self explanatory and in parenthesis we show the average per 40 minutes.
A/T is the Assists over Turnovers ratio (i.e., how many assists dished per turnover committed)
S/T is the Steals over Turnovers ratio (i.e., how many stolen balls per turnover committed)
(B+A+S)/T is the Blocks plus Assists plus Steals over Turnovers ratio (i.e., how many useful actions - steals, blocks, assists - per turnover committed)
TENDEX is a popular basketball metric which calculates the efficiency of a player by dividing TENDEX points by minutes played, where TENDEX points are equal to Points-Missed Shots(both 2P and 3P)-Missed Free Throws+Assists+Blocks+Steals-Turnovers. So the formula is (Points-Missed Shots-Missed Free Throws+Assists+Blocks+Steals-Turnovers)/Minutes Played. It is considered that a value of 1 is for a "perfect" player but higher values are actually possible. In general a value 0.5 is for a very good guard and 0.7 for a very good forward/center. You can find more details in GalanisSportsData website (link deactivated temporarily).
EconP40M = Economy per 40 minutes, where economy is the useful actions calculated as Assists+Steals+Blocks-Turnovers and then calculate the average per 40 minutes.

Basketfox for other borwsers

Hi all,

I want to share a quick word about porting Basketfox to other browsers. While this seems like an exciting new project, it seems that there is less interest in the community. In fact only 8% of the people would use Basketfox for Safari or Opera should it be available. While people are mostly happy with having Basketfox for Chrome (55% of the users use the Chrome version) and Firefox (51% of the users use the Firefox version).

*Note that the percentages do not add up to 100% but more because in the poll one could vote any number of browser that he intends to use with Basketfox and apparently there are some people who use Basketfox both in Firefox and Chrome (maybe a work/home situation or a second computer like girlfriends's computer and so on!)

So, porting Basketfox to other browsers is not a top priority. Instead we focus on providing all the possible features that BSGoodies and the community can think of and support the existing versions.

Moreover, we have started contemplating about a mobile version of the game or of Basketfox. This needs much discussion with the game admin so it is - for now - just a thought!

Latest Basketfox in more than 1500 browsers!

Hi all,

I am just excited to see that the latest version of Basketfox is installed in more than 1500 browsers!!

Moreover, let me share some statistics about the blog and the project code page.

The Basketfox project page (http://code.google.com/p/basketfox/) receives 25-50 unique visits every day, 15% of them come from Greece, 8% from USA, 6.9% from Slovenia, 6.2% from Italy, 5.1% from Serbia, 4.9% from Poland, 4.3% from Romania, 4% from Indonesia, 3.7% from Spain, 3.2% from France and the list continues. Regarding cities, Athens has the most visits, with Bucharest being second, Ljubljana third and Belgrade, Riga, Dumai, Zagreb, Milan and Maribor filling the first 9 positions. Out of these visits 59% come from Firefox, 37.5% from Chrome and only 1.7% from IE, 1.4% from Safari and 0.3% from Opera and Opera Mini. Finally, regarding operating system 91.4% of the visitors use Windows, 4.9% Mac, 1.5% Android, 1.4% Linux and 0.6% iOS.

The BSGoodies blog (http://bsgoodies.blogspot.com) receives 50-100 unique visits every day, 12.9% of them come from Greece, 8.6% from Slovenia, 7.3% from USA, 6.4% from Italy, 5.5% from Poland, 4.4% from Serbia 4.1% from Spain, 3.6% from Portugal, 3.5% from Bosnia, 3.4% from Romania and the list continues. Regarding cities, Athens has the most visits, with Ljubljana being second, Belgrade third and Riga, Zagreb, Thessaloniki, Brno, Vilnius and Bucharest filling the first 9 positions. Installing Basketfox

The recent updates of Basketfox have increased its popularity and it seems that there is a considerable number of basketsim managers who are trying to use it for the first time.

In this short how-to I will explain how to install it. Before explaining how to install Basketfox for the two browsers it is available (Firefox and Chrome) let me clarify that the Operating System makes no difference. Until now Baksetfox works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Option 1: Installing Basketfox on Firefox

Installing Basketfox on Firefox is actually straight-forward.
Step 1: Navigate to the download repository: http://code.google.com/p/basketfox/downloads/list.
Step 2: Click on the green arrow next to BSGoodies Basketfox for Firefox x.xx.xx with the latest version number (please make sure you download a *.xpi file).
Step 3: Choose open with Firefox and press OK.
Comment: If you choose to download the *.xpi on your computer then after running Firefox you have to press Ctrl-O and locate the downloaded file.

Step 4: In the next dialogue select "Install now".

Step 5: Once the installation is completed restart Firefox as prompted.

Option 2: Installing Basketfox for Chrome

Installing Basketfox for Chrome is somewhat more complicated.
Step 1: Navigate to the download repository: http://code.google.com/p/basketfox/downloads/list.

Step 2: Click on the green arrow next to BSGoodies Basketfox for Chrome x.xx.xx with the latest version number (please make sure you download a *.crx file). After the file finishes downloading because Chrome does not allow you to install directly you will see the message "Apps, extensions, and user scripts cannot be added from this website". Press "OK".
Step 2b: If Step 2 did not work, please right click and the green arrow and select "Save link as...". Then proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Open the "Extensions" page on Chrome as shown below.

Step 4: Drag and drop the *.crx file in the extension page.

Step 5: Press "Add" and you are done!

Call for youth coach training data

Dear BS managers,

When we are buying a coach to train youth we want to know how many weeks he is able to train our youths! The knowledge up to now is not entirely clear as according to this wiki entry what we know is the following:

Is it possible to clear this blur and know whether it is 5 or 6, 6 or 7 and so on. Is the number of max weeks a function of experience or of experience and WWY. Let's find out by submitting our REAL youth training coach data. Navigate to your training page and click on the link. Do not forget to submit the max number of training weeks (as you can see them when you set the training to your youths).

Dear managers,

Basketsim.com has been off-line since Wednesday. The information up to know is that adiego is trying his best to solve the problem but the host (nexpoint web hosting) is down and their support is not very responsive. There is discussion going on in the basketsim facebook page as well: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Basketsim/308116441660.

Hopefully the problem will be resolved and everything will get back to normal. If there are any important news I will report them in the blog as well.

25/8/2012 14:40 CET Update: There is no significant progress. According to adiego he was promised by the web hosting company that the problem will be resolved in 24 hours (starting from Saturday 01:48) which means that we have to way until Sunday 26/8 morning. But I don't want to get your hopes up because the particular web hosting company had a lot of problems and all of its customers suffer a similar problem so solving everything in 24 hours is optimistic. (But of course we definitely hope to happen..!)

The latest news from Adiego:
- backups of the http and small db tables were completed
- the big tables are waiting, but that cannot be done without superuser priviledges, so waiting for nexpoint response and hoping for that one last help
- also, i'm ordering a new server right now, all potential providers were examined into extreme details (reviews, uptime, performance, quality etc) and finally i was able to make a pick and i'm sure it's a great one!
- as soon as I get my SU priviledges back, I will complete the backups, move the site and then get it online on new server
- new sever should be extra fast, so there will be at least something positive coming from this situation :)
- all data should remain intact, only the match reports (texts only) will be missing for all past matches

I'm hoping for some development today already, when I receive new server, I'll start uploading data there (everything that is already backuped)

Installing basketfox in Chrome v21

Dear friends,

One recent change in how Chrome extensions work makes us change how we install the add-on.

Starting from Chrom v21, in order to install the add-on (in fact any add-on) from the *.crx file you have to drag and drop the file in the extensions page (see an example).

Updated Financial Tool

Financial Tool is now updated to be integrated with financial pages from the game.

If you are in your team finances you can find a link back to the Financial Tool which copies the team's information.

Once the data is copied you need to verify the values.

You should pay attention to the following boxes:

New weekly fans (how many new fans come or leave every week)
50.000 and 25.000 youth (which ranges of weeks you pull a youth)
College (whether you do a college investment and how big)
Cup matches (how many cup matches and how far your team may go)
League level (what is the league level of your team)
Estimated position (what is the estimated position in the league)

Clarification for the cup matches:

If you play in a country with 5 levels then you participate in 10 weeks cup.
If you play in a country with 4 levels then you participate in 9 weeks cup.
If you play in a country with 3 levels then you participate in 8 weeks cup.

A few words about Basketfox 1.20.9

Recently, I updated Basketfox to version 1.20.9 with some interesting changes.The update log can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/basketfox/wiki/UpdateLog and the download (for those who don't update automatically) can be done from here http://code.google.com/p/basketfox/downloads/list.

One thing that was bothering me lately was to know how many weeks each youth team member has without having to sit down and calculate with my head. Once I built the season calendar (notice the S16, W7 by your team's name on the top left corner?) it was easy to calculate the maximum remaining weeks so if you go to the page of a player from your youth team you will see in orange his remaining training weeks.

Another important feature is the prompt to submit your training data! I know that it looks a bit funny but your data are more than needed to have a clear image about how fast our players train. The plan is to gather enough data so the inaccuracy of WR does not affect us any more (remember? we used to have exact WR with the previous forumla!). Up to now, only in a few days of operation I have gathered more than 300 players data but we need more data! That's why the submit button is located in a way that with two clicks you can submit your data and help BSGoodies. With future updates I will keep you posted about these results. Let me remind you that this is a continuation of this effort a while back: http://bsgoodies.blogspot.ch/2011/09/call-for-training-data.html. Back then it was really difficult to gather data and in fact only a handful of managers copied-pasted all their team's data, which lead me to think how I can help this process. So, that's why I came up with an easier way to submit your data through the "Submit" button! Let me finish this paragraph with a big Thanks! to all managers who support my effort!

I would like to finish this post by mentioning the last cool new feature of BF 1.20.9 which is the maximum differences in a match report. If you see the entire report of any match you will notice a new box on the right hand-side entitled "Max differences". There you can see the maximum difference each team managed during the game (and if there several times that a team had the max difference, you see the most recent).

New call for training data

With the last versions of Basketfox (from 1.20.6 and on) we enable the managers to easily submit their data to our database regarding our effort to finalize the corresponding between age, WR and training speed.

With the new version of Basketfox (soon to be available: 1.20.7) the users will be prompted to submit their coach training contribution. This step is crucial since the coaches give a maximum +0.5 in training and we have to subtract the exact number before we do any more calculations.

The plan is to have enough data for all ages and WR ranges and come up with a clear mapping between the pair of WR, age and the training speed. Having that calculated we will be able to predict future training speed for a player, thus allowing for an elaborate estimation of his skill in the future assuming training intensities and weekly appearances.

I would like to ask for your understanding as with the new version of BasketFox you will be prompted again to submit your players and your coaches (in order to match them).

Dear managers,

The previous call for data resulted in several interesting data points which will be summarized soon in a separate post. As you can see from the older we are in the position to have a relatively clear idea about the training speed for a given age and WR but we do not have yet a closed formula.

We need more data (and believe me I am doing my best with my team since each year we have new data - ages are increased by 1) to have better results, so I prepared an easier way to give me your data.

In the excelsheet that you can find here (in xlsx format) (press here for the xls format and here for the ods format) you see a table with 10 rows and several columns. I am asking - whoever is interested and willing - to provide his training data as follows:

Make sure you are a supporter
Make sure you trained 40h
Edit the green cells:

TEAM: please fill in your manager name (in order to be able to ask you if there is an error for example).
Player: if you want write the player's name (optional)
40h: please fill in your training speed as you see in the players page. (if it is positive omit the "+" and use dot as the decimal symbol).
EV: please fill in the EV of the player (omitting the dots).
PW: please fill in the predicted wage (omitting the dots).
Csenior: please fill in the coach's ability to train senior players.

When you are done please submit your excel.

Edit: There were several bugfixes incorporated these days. Moreover, the auto-update feature is now possible for both versions. This means that for any future version if you go in your browser (Firefox or Chrome) and give "Extensions -> Check for Updates" or "Extensions -> Update Extensions Now" you will download the new version automatically.

Bugfixes for both versions.
Important when using imperial units.
New feature: Options for Basketfox for Chrome
Accuracy for training report has increased (thanks to several managers for pointing it out).
Fixed a bug left in the code for Google Chrome version with multiview leading to no scoreboards.
Fixed the spacing problems in player page.
Fixed the small error in training report page (only when a player had just popped up a skill). Now it should be 100% accurate.
I removed the WR and XP from player page when the player is youth.
I finalized the players summary in the right side of the players page.
Only for Google Chrome: I added the BSGoodies logo with a link on top in order to be able to go directly to BSgoodies.
Finally, I - at last - merged the core of the code for the two addons, so every change applies to both browsers. Well that's good news... for me! :) It doesn't affect user experience.

New updates: Basketfox for Chrome 1.11.2 and Basketfox for Firefox 1.1.1

Dear Basketsim managers and Basketfox users,

A new version of Basketfox (~~only for Chrome~~ for both Firefox and Chrome) is out. It includes the highly ranked proposed features and more:
1) In the training report page we present the current sublevel and the last training impact (your 1st choice in the gallop)
2) In the players page the "skills per season" number is calculated based on the Training data (your 2nd choice in the gallop)
3) The grey EV does not affect anymore Basketfox and now it can read it.
4) The annoying popup in some cases in the player page (of another team) is changed with different text in the page and no pop-up.
5) The work-rate as a number is added in the market page.
6) A first version of the summarization table exists in the players page (part of the third choice of the gallop).

Possible features for new Basketfox

Dear BS managers,

I have been thinking of a new version of Basketfox and I came up with many different features that seem to be very interesting. Unfortunately, I have to prioritize and implement only some of them in order to have it some time soon.

So, I created a poll that you can find in the top of the page that you can select the feature you find the most important. I will try to implement as many features as possible but I will implement first the features that seem to be the most relevant.

The options up to now are:

When in the match report page I can try to calculate some statistics like how many extra free throws were made and how many missed (it was discussed in some forums and its actually fun to have this number). It may be possible to calculate other stats as well so if you have an idea (and an idea how to do it!!) please submit your proposal in this form.
When in the training report page I can present the exact sublevel for each player.
When in the players page I can use the "Training" information to calculate how many weeks are needed to pop a skill (this cannot take into account the sublevel so it will assume that sublevel is 0).
When in the training page or the coach market page I can present the coach's info (workrate, xp, wr with youths) with a numerical number in parenthesis which is currently missing.
In the players page I can enhance on the right hand-side the table with the team averages. I was thinking of presenting the averages of the (i) first 5 players, (ii) second 5 players, (iii) all players for several attributes like: (a) total skill, (b) wage, (c) exp, (d) age
In the arena page I can add the BSGoodies proposal for cheerleaders investment.

Options 2 and 3 can be used only by supporters. If you have another idea please submit it in this form.

Please vote in the poll in the top. Which extensions do you find more relevant. If you have other ideas as well please use the forms and submit them!

Call for training data

Dear basketsim managers,

Here at BSGoodies we have been trying to verify and re-engineer the training formula based on age and real WR. We have already collected some data but now we really need the help of basketsim community. Every supporter has every week the detailed information about the training of his players. We would like to collect as much data as possible including:

Training speed (e.g. +1.14)
Training intensity (e.g. 40h)
Player's EV
Player's age
Player's predicted wage
Coach ability to train senior players (1-100)
Coach WR (1-15)
Coach motivation (1-100)

This information per player will help us understand how the training speed varies according to age and WR. We have some preliminary results (see image below) and we wait for you help to have a more conclusive analysis. Please provide your data!

Using your data we can complete the image and be able to calculate the training speed for a variety of ages and WR. This will help us to build a tool which will calculate with absolute accuracy the future skill of your player if you train him for 2,3 or 4 years. As you can see it is really useful!

I have been thinking of a more complete basketfox for a long time now.
We present Basketfox enhanced by BSGoodies with the following amazing new features:

1) Presentation of player in the (single) player page:
-- Skill per position
-- BMI (next to weight)
-- Numerical values of each skill
-- Numerical values of XP and WR
-- Exact decimal value of WR when predicted wage is shown
-- If it is a youth player the available values are used and in parenthesis the number of skills used are shown ("?" is used when skill is not known)
2) Presentation of youth teams
3) Basketfox will work until Firefox 10.9
