NOT sure where to start as a lot has happened in 15 years.

The concept of the night has always been to invite artists I really liked at DJs; it didn’t really matter if they were residents of their local clubs or already big names know internationally, the point was that they had to be VERY good DJs

The night is 7 hours long and I always had 1 DJ guest per night so we could both play long sets, so we had the freedom of expression that not all the clubs or raves at that time were offering to artists.

My first guests were the good resident DJs I heard in my first visits abroad.

So beside a few Parisian DJ mates, I mostly had DJs who were from Belgium and The Netherlands. Sometimes I would also play all night long, which was the only place were I could do that. Which made progress a lot as a DJ.

Circa ‘98 I was one of the first ones in Paris to bring a lot of UK artists such as Terry Francis, Nathan Coles, Chris Duckenfield, Ralph Lawson, Kenny Hawkes (who became a regular guest), but also DJ friends from the US such as Josh Wink (another regular) and Doc Martin.

At that time my programming was very different from all the other clubs in Paris which were very much stuck in the French touch sound that had become very formulaic and commercial.

I really wanted to educate the crowd on the different kind of House and show the Parisian audience there was a lot more to it than just filtered disco.

My style was more deep and dubby and it was important to be able to mix genres in one night so it could sometimes go more housey or more techy depending on the mood or the time .

The guest I brought always had the ability to mix different genres in one set. That is something that’s always been important for me as a DJ and as a listener – making a point to be as open minded musically as possible.

I stayed true to that philosophy trying to find the right balance between bringing regular guest DJs, but always searching for new interesting artists to book.

The Rex gave me the total freedom to choose my guests and to take risks to invite unknown artist for the first time to Paris.

Some of them became huge names a couple of years later. For instance Steve Bug, Luciano, Loco Dice (I booked him to play his first gig in France) Raresh, Tobi Neumann and Cassy (a regular).

Three years ago Bass Culture gave birth to a label that has the same name and philosophy.

I sometimes do label nights with the artists I sign, but it’s also important for me not to change the night too much and still bring the new comers and the bigger DJs I respect or whoever I want to share the decks with.

Recent and forthcoming guests are Daniel Bell, Margaret Dygas, Delano Smith, Jus Ed, Onur Ozer, Mike Huckaby…15 years later I still have as much fun playing and running this party since the first year and I can’t think of any other club where it could have lasted this long.

Cette Bass Culture annonce la couleur de la saison estivale. Groove et fraicheur sont les mots d’ordre. D’julz, que vous retrouverez régulièrement cet été aux platines du célèbre club le DC10 à Ibiza, convie l’un de ses compères, WILLIE GRAFF. C’est à Ibiza que Willie Graff est né et à grandi. Il s’est fait ses premières armes dans les bars et clubs de l’ile. Résident au Pacha, il a pu se forger une expérience et jouer avec les plus grands dj’s, ce qui l’a conduit naturellement à devenir résident au DC10 et au CIELO,(New York). Ce jeune artiste est aussi producteur avec son ami Tuccillo ou en solo : Circus Company, Ibadan, Isgud, Drumpoet Community…C’est seul qu’il viendra affronter le public du REX, un public exigeant qui lui réserve un accueil de taille !

Joel Alter is now officially a Bass Culture Records MVP. Already a firm favourite with label boss D’Julz, the Swedish producer bookended 2011 with a brace of releases that are still proving to be some of the labels most popular to date. TheDJ Qu remixed ‘Rules Of Love‘ was described by Resident Advisor as a “snug slice of deep house shrouded in a warming, edge softening mistiness.”.
